Polynomial functors and categorifications of Fock space

Fix an infinite field $k$ of characteristic $p$, and let $\g$ be the Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{\infty}$ if $p=0$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_p$ otherwise. Let $\PP$ denote the category of strict polynomial functors defined over $k$. We describe a $\g$-action on $\PP$ (in the sense of Chuang and Rouquier) categorifying the Fock space representation of $\g$.

Troesch complexes and extensions of strict polynomial functors

We develop a new approach of extension calculus in the category of strict polynomial functors, based on Troesch complexes. We obtain new short elementary proofs of numerous classical Ext-computations as well as new results. In particular, we get a cohomological version of the `fundamental theorems' from classical invariant invariant theory for GL_n for n big enough (and we give a conjecture for smaller values of n). We also study the `twisting spectral sequence' E^{s,t}(F,G,r) converging to the extension groups Ext^*(F^{(r)}, G^{(r)}) between the twisted functors F^{(r)} and G^{(r)}. Many classical Ext-computations simply amount to the collapsing of this spectral sequence at the second page (for lacunary reasons), and it is also a convenient tool to study the effect of the Frobenius twist on Ext-groups. We prove many cases of collapsing, and we conjecture collapsing is a general fact.

Cohomology of classical algebraic groups from the functorial viewpoint

We prove that extension groups in strict polynomial functor categories compute the rational cohomology of classical algebraic groups. This result was previously known only for general linear groups. We give several applications to the study of classical algebraic groups, such as a cohomological stabilization property, the injectivity of external cup products, and the existence of Hopf algebra structures on the (stable) cohomology of a classical algebraic group with coefficients in a Hopf algebra. Our result also opens the way to new explicit cohomology computations. We give an example inspired by recent computations of Djament and Vespa.

Bifunctor cohomology and Cohomological finite generation for reductive groups

Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over a field k. Let A be a finitely generated commutative k-algebra on which G acts rationally by k-algebra automorphisms. Invariant theory tells that the ring of invariants A^G=H^0(G,A) is finitely generated. We show that in fact the full cohomology ring H^*(G,A) is finitely generated. The proof is based on the strict polynomial bifunctor cohomology classes constructed by the junior author. We also continue the study of bifunctor cohomology of the divided powers of a Frobenius twist of the adjoint representation.

Universal classes for algebraic groups

We exhibit cocycles representing certain classes in the rational cohomology of of the general linear group with coefficients in the divided powers of a Frobenius twist of the adjoint representation. These classes' existence was anticipated by van der Kallen, and they intervene in the proof that reductive linear algebraic groups have finitely generated cohomology algebras.
