Observation of transverse coherent backscattering in disordered photonic structures

We report on the experimental observation of weak localization in an optically induced disordered (2+1)-dimensional photonic structure. Our flexible method of optical induction is applied with a nondiffracting random intensity distribution. We focus on the analysis of a statistical output spectrum for many probe events with variance of the incoming beam's transverse spatial frequency. For particular spatial frequencies we find considerable signatures of transverse coherent backscattering.

Incoherent interaction of nematicons in bias-free liquid-crystal cells

We study experimentally the propagation dynamics and interaction of a pair of mutually incoherent nematicons: spatial optical solitons in nematic liquid crystals. In contrast to earlier studies, we consider a bias-free liquid-crystal cell and compare the soliton interaction in copropagating and counterpropagating geometries. We analyze the dependence of nematicon interaction on input power and observe a direct manifestation of a long-range nonlocal nonlinearity. Attraction of counterpropagating solitons requires higher powers and longer relaxation times than that of copropagating nematicons due to losses-induced power asymmetry of counterpropagating nematicons.

Nonlinear optical beams carrying phase dislocations

We describe different types of self-trapped optical beams carrying phase dislocations, including vortex solitons and ring-like soliton clusters. We demonstrate numerically how to create such nonlinear singular beams by the interaction of several fundamental optical solitons. Mutual trapping of several solitons can be regarded as a synthesis of `soliton molecules', and it corresponds to a transfer of an initial orbital angular momentum of a system of solitons to a spin momentum of an optical vortex.

A Potential of Incoherent Attraction Between Multidimensional Solitons

We obtain analytical expressions for an effective potential of interaction between two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) solitons (including the case of 2D vortex solitons) belonging to two different modes which are incoherently coupled by cross-phase modulation. The derivation is based on calculation of the interaction term in the full Hamiltonian of the system. An essential peculiarity is that, in the 3D case, as well as in the case of 2D solitons with unequal masses, the main contribution to the interaction potential originates from a vicinity of one or both solitons, similarly to what was recently found in the 2D and 3D single-mode systems, while in the case of identical 2D solitons, the dominating area covers all the space between the solitons. Unlike the single-mode systems,_stable_ bound states of mutually orbiting solitons are shown to be possible in the bimodal system.
