Reinvestigation of the intrinsic magnetic properties of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$B alloys and crystallization behavior of ribbons

New determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with $x=0.3-0.35$ are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, and Ti additions. Previous attempts at developing a significant hysteresis have been unsuccessful in this system. Our melt-spinning experiment indicates that this system shows rapid crystallization.

Spin-reversal energy barriers of 305 K for Fe$^{2+}$ $d^{6}$ ions with linear ligand coordination

A remarkably large magnetic anisotropy energy of 305 K is computed by quantum chemistry methods for divalent Fe$^{2+}$ $d^6$ substitutes at Li-ion sites with $D_{6h}$ point-group symmetry within the solid-state matrix of Li$_3$N. This is similar to values calculated by the same approach and confirmed experimentally for linearly coordinated monovalent Fe$^{1+}$ $d^7$ species, among the largest so far in the research area of single-molecule magnets. Our ab initio results therefore mark a new exciting exploration path in the search for superior single-molecule magnets, rooted in the $d_{xy}^{1.5} d_{x^2-y^2}^{1.5} d_{z^2}^1 d_{yz}^1 d_{zx}^1$ configuration of $d^6$ transition-metal ions with linear or quasilinear nearest-neighbor coordination. This $d^6$ axial anisotropy may be kept robust even for symmetries lower than $D_{6h}$, provided the ligand and farther-neighbor environment is engineered such that the $d_{xy}^{1.5} d_{x^2-y^2}^{1.5} d_{z^2}^1 d_{yz}^1 d_{zx}^1$ - $d_{xy}^{1} d_{x^2-y^2}^{1} d_{z^2}^2 d_{yz}^1 d_{zx}^1$ splitting remains large enough.

In-situ detection of nucleation in high temperature solutions

The state of a sample during crystal growth from high temperature solutions is not accessible in conventional furnace systems. An optimization of the growth parameters often requires arduous trial and error procedures in particular in case of novel multicomponent systems with unknown phase diagrams. Here we present a measurement technique based on lock-in amplification that allows for in-situ detection of the liquidus and solidus temperatures as well as structural phase transitions. A thin, metallic measurement wire is mounted in close vicinity to the melt. Characteristic anomalies in the time-dependent electrical resistivity of this wire allow for the detection of latent heat release without using a reference crucible. The method is implemented in a 'feedback furnace' and enables an adjustment of the temperature profile based on the occurrence or absence of phase transitions. The absolute temperature serves as an additional source of information. Obtained phase transition temperatures are in good agreement with differential thermal analysis (DTA).

On the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C carbon isotope effect in the quasi one-dimensional superconductor Sc$_3$CoC$_4$

Sc$_3$CoC$_4$ is the only superconductor in the group of the isotypic carbides Sc$_3M$C$_4$ ($M$ = Mn, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni), rendering it into an ideal benchmark system to systematically study the prerequisites and mechanism of superconductivity in such quasi one-dimensional structures. To investigate the isotope effect, the substitution series Sc$_3$Co($^{12}$C$_{1-x}$$^{13}$C$_x$)$_4$ with $x$ = 0, 0.5 and 1 was synthesized by arc melting. The sample homogeneity was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The resulting isotope coefficient based on magnetization studies on polycrystalline samples and electrical resistivity measurements on single crystals of $α$ = 0.58 lies close to the value of 0.5 predicted by BCS theory.

Suppression of the magnetic order in CeFeAsO: non-equivalence of hydrostatic and chemical pressure

We present a detailed investigation of the electronic properties of CeFeAsO under chemical (As by P substitution) and hydrostatic pressure by means of in-house and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Fe magnetism is suppressed due to both pressures and no magnetic order was observed above a P-substitution level of 40% or 5.2 GPa hydrostatic pressure. We compared both pressures and found that the isovalent As by P substitution change the crystallographic and electronic properties differently than hydrostatic pressure.

Single crystal growth and anisotropic magnetic properties of Li$_2$Sr[Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$N]$_2$

Up to now, investigation of physical properties of ternary and higher nitridometalates was severely hampered by challenges concerning phase purity and crystal size. Employing a modified lithium flux technique, we are now able to prepare sufficiently large single crystals of the highly air and moisture sensitive nitridoferrate $\rm Li_2Sr[Li_{1-x}Fe_xN]_2$ for anisotropic magnetization measurements. The magnetic properties are most remarkable: large anisotropy and coercivity fields of 7 Tesla at $T = 2$ K indicate a significant orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of iron. Altogether, the novel growth method opens a route towards interesting phases in the comparatively recent research field of nitridometalates and should be applicable to various other materials.

Antiferroelectric instability in kagome francisites Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$X (X = Cl, Br)

Density-functional calculations of lattice dynamics and high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction uncover antiferroelectric distortion in the kagome francisite Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl below 115K. Its Br-containing analogue is stable in the room-temperature crystal structure down to at least 10K, although the Br compound is on the verge of a similar antiferroelectric instability and reveals local displacements of Cu and Br atoms. The I-containing compound is stable in its room-temperature structure according to density-functional calculations. We show that the distortion involves cooperative displacements of Cu and Cl atoms, and originates from the optimization of interatomic distances for weakly bonded halogen atoms. The distortion introduces a tangible deformation of the kagome spin lattice and may be responsible for the reduced net magnetization of the Cl compound compared to the Br one. The polar structure of Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl is only slightly higher in energy than the non-polar antiferroelectric structure, but no convincing evidence of its formation could be obtained.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point: Antiferromagnetic ground state in substituted CeFePO

We have investigated single crystals of two substitution series Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)PO and CeFe(As$_{1-y}$P$_{y}$)O in the vicinity to the quantum critical material CeFePO by means of magnetic-susceptibility and specific-heat measurements. We observe an antiferromagnetic ground state in the vicinity of the quantum critical point, with pronounced metamagnetic transitions for $H\parallel c$, which is the magnetically hard direction. Our results verify that a ferromagnetic quantum critical point is avoided in substituted CeFePO, because we clearly demonstrate that the ferromagnetic ground state changes into an antiferromagnetic one, when approaching the quantum critical point.

Origin of the spin reorientation transitions in (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$B alloys

Low-temperature measurements of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy $K$ in (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$B alloys are reported, and the origin of this anisotropy is elucidated using a first-principles electronic structure analysis. The calculated concentration dependence $K(x)$ with a maximum near $x=0.3$ and a minimum near $x=0.8$ is in excellent agreement with experiment. This dependence is traced down to spin-orbital selection rules and the filling of electronic bands with increasing electronic concentration. At the optimal Co concentration, $K$ depends strongly on the tetragonality and doubles under a modest 3% increase of the $c/a$ ratio, suggesting that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be further enhanced using epitaxial or chemical strain.

Fermi surface reconstruction in (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (0.44 $\leq x \leq$ 1) probed by thermoelectric power measurements

We report in-plane thermoelectric power measurements on single crystals of (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (0.44 $\leq x \leq$ 1). We observe a minimum in the S$|_{T=const}$ versus x at x ~ 0.55 that can be associated with the change in the topology of the Fermi surface, a Lifshitz transition, related to the electron pockets at the center of M point crossing the Fermi level. This feature is clearly observable below ~ 75 K. Thermoelectric power also shows a change in the x ~ 0.8 - 0.9 range, where maximum in the thermoelectric power collapses into a plateau. This Lifshitz transition is most likely related to the reconstruction of the Fermi surface associated with the transformation of the hole pockets at the M point into four blades as observed by ARPES measurements.

Magnetic and transport properties of i-$R$-Cd icosahedral quasicrystals ($R$ = Y, Gd-Tm)

We present a detailed characterization of the recently discovered i-$R$-Cd ($R$ = Y, Gd-Tm) binary quasicrystals by means of x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent dc and ac magnetization, temperature-dependent resistance and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. Structurally, the broadening of x-ray diffraction peaks found for i-$R$-Cd is dominated by frozen-in phason strain, which is essentially independent of $R$. i-Y-Cd is weakly diamagnetic and manifests a temperature-independent susceptibility. i-Gd-Cd can be characterized as a spin-glass below 4.6 K via dc magnetization cusp, a third order non-linear magnetic susceptibility peak, a frequency-dependent freezing temperature and a broad maximum in the specific heat. i-$R$-Cd ($R$ = Ho-Tm) is similar to i-Gd-Cd in terms of features observed in thermodynamic measurements. i-Tb-Cd and i-Dy-Cd do not show a clear cusp in their zero-field-cooled dc magnetization data, but instead show a more rounded, broad local maximum. The resistivity for i-$R$-Cd is of order 300 $μΩ$ cm and weakly temperature-dependent. The characteristic freezing temperatures for i-$R$-Cd ($R$ = Gd-Tm) deviate from the de Gennes scaling, in a manner consistent with crystal electric field splitting induced local moment anisotropy.

Single crystal growth from light, volatile, and reactive materials using lithium and calcium flux

We present a method for the solution growth of single crystals from reactive Li and Ca melts and its application to the synthesis of several, representative compounds. Among these, single crystalline Li3N, Li2(Li{1-x}Tx)N with T = {Mn, Fe, Co}, LiCaN, Li2C2, LiRh, and LiIr from Li-rich flux as well as Ca2N, CaNi2, CaNi3, YbNi2, Y2Ni7, and LaNi5 from Ca-rich flux could be obtained. Special emphasize is given on the growth of nitrides using commercially available Li3N and Ca3N2 powders as the nitrogen source instead of N2 gas.

i-R-Cd (R = Gd - Tm, Y): A new family of binary magnetic icosahedral quasicrystals

"Seek and ye shall find, the unsought shall go undetected." This adage, attributed to Aristophanes' can be considered one of the defining mantras of new materials research; if you don't look, you certainly will not discover. As a result of our recent discovery of the binary quasicrystalline phase i-Sc12Zn88 we proposed that there may well be other binary quasicrystalline phases lurking nearby known crystalline approximants, perhaps as peritectally forming compounds with very limited liquidus surfaces, offering greatly reduced ranges of composition/temperature for primary solidification. Here we report that, as the adage goes, we have found. Indeed, adjacent to the RCd6, cubic approximate structure, we have discovered the long sought after model system for magnetic quasicrystals: a new family of at least seven rare earth icosahedral quasicrystals: i-R-Cd for R = Gd - Tm, Y, six of which now form the known set of moment bearing, binary quasicrystals.

Interplay between Co-3d and Ce-4f magnetism in CeCoAsO

We have investigated the ground state properties of polycrystalline CeCoAsO by means of magnetization, specific heat and solid state NMR. Susceptibility and specific-heat measurements suggest a ferromagnetic order at about, $T_\mathrm{C}$=75 K. No further transitions are found down to 2 K. At 6.5 K a complex Schottky type of anomaly shows up in the specific heat results. The interplay between Ce-4f and Co-3d magnetism being responsible for that anomaly is discussed. Furthermore $^{75}$As NMR investigations have been performed to probe the magnetism on a microscopic scale. As-NMR spectra are analysed in terms of first and second order quadrupolar interaction. The anisotropic shift component $K_{\mathrm{ab}}$ and $K_{\mathrm{c}}$ could be derived from the $^{75}$As powder spectra. Towards lower temperature a strong shift anisotropy was found. Nonetheless $K_{\mathrm{iso}}$ tracks the bulk susceptibility down to $T=$50 K very well. Furthermore the presence of weak correlations among the Ce ions in the ferromagnetic state is discussed. The observed increase of $C/T$ towards lower temperatures supports this interpretation.
