On Direct Integral Expansion for Periodic Block-Operator Jacobi Matrices and Applications

We construct a functional model (direct integral expansion) and study the spectra of certain periodic block-operator Jacobi matrices, in particular, of general 2D partial difference operators of the second order. We obtain the upper bound, optimal in a sense, for the Lebesgue measure of their spectra. The examples of the operators for which there are several gaps in the spectrum are given.

Programming infinite machines

For infinite machines which are free from the classical Thompson's lamp paradox we show that they are not free from its inverted version. We provide a program for infinite machines and an infinite mechanism which simulate this paradox. While their finite analogs work predictably, the program and the infinite mechanism demonstrate an undefined behavior. As in the case of infinite Davies's machines, our examples are free from infinite masses, infinite velocities, infinite forces, etc. Only infinite divisibility of space and timeis assumed. Thus, the considered infinite devices are possible in a continuous Newtonian Universe and they do not conflict with continuous Newtonian mechanics. Some possible applications to the analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations are discussed.

Nanoribbons in external electric fields

We consider the Schrödinger operator on nanoribbons (tight-binding models) in an external electric potentials $V$. The corresponding electric field is perpendicular to the axis of the nanoribbon. If V=0, then the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator consists of two spectral bands and the flat band (i.e., the eigenvalue with infinite multiplicity) between them. If we switch on an weak electric potential $V\to 0$, then we determine the asymptotics of the spectral bands for small fields. In particular, we describe all potentials when the unperturbed eigenvalue remains the flat band and when one becomes the small band of the continuous spectrum.

Marchenko-Ostrovski mappings for periodic Jacobi matrices

We consider the 1D periodic Jacobi matrices. The spectrum of this operator is purely absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We solve the inverse problem (including characterization) in terms of vertical slits on the quasimomentum domain . Furthermore, we obtain a priori two-sided estimates for vertical slits in terms of Jacoby matrices.

Lyapunov functions for periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operators

We consider periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operators. The spectrum of this operator is absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We define the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on an associated Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the scalar case. We show that this function has (real or complex) branch points, which we call resonances. We prove that there exist two types of gaps: i) stable gaps, i.e., the endpoints are periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues, ii) unstable (resonance) gaps, i.e., the endpoints are resonances (real branch points). We show that some spectral data determine the spectrum (counting multiplicity) of the Jacobi operator.

Inverse problem for the discrete 1D Schr\"odinger operator with small periodic potentials

Consider the discrete 1D Schr\"odinger operator on $\Z$ with an odd $2k$ periodic potential $q$. For small potentials we show that the mapping: $q\to $ heights of vertical slits on the quasi-momentum domain (similar to the Marchenko-Ostrovski maping for the Hill operator) is a local isomorphism and the isospectral set consists of $2^k$ distinct potentials. Finally, the asymptotics of the spectrum are determined as $q\to 0$.
