Cell decompositions of character varieties

We establish curious Lefschetz property for generic character varieties of Riemann surfaces conjectured by Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Our main tool applies directly in the case when there is at least one puncture where the local monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. We pass to a vector bundle over the character variety, which is then decomposed into cells, which look like vector bundles over varieties associated to braids by Shende-Treumann-Zaslow. These varieties are in turn decomposed into cells that look like $(\mathbb{C}^*)^{d-2k}\times \mathbb{C}^k$. The curious Lefschetz property is shown to hold on each cell, and therefore holds for the character variety. To deduce the general case, we introduce a fictitious puncture with trivial monodromy, and show that the cohomology of the character variety where one puncture has trivial monodromy is isomorphic to the sign component of the $S_n$ action on the cohomology for the character variety where trivial monodromy is replaced by regular semisimple monodromy. This involves an argument with the Grothendieck-Springer sheaf, and analysis of how the cohomology of the character variety varies when the eigenvalues are moved around.

A proof of the shuffle conjecture

We present a proof of the compositional shuffle conjecture, which generalizes the famous shuffle conjecture for the character of the diagonal coinvariant algebra. We first formulate the combinatorial side of the conjecture in terms of certain operators on a graded vector space $V_*$ whose degree zero part is the ring of symmetric functions $Sym[X]$ over $\mathbb{Q}(q,t)$. We then extend these operators to an action of an algebra $\tildeÅ$ acting on this space, and interpret the right generalization of the $\nabla$ using an involution of the algebra which is antilinear with respect to the conjugation $(q,t)\mapsto (q^{-1},t^{-1})$.

Five-term relation and Macdonald polynomials

The non-commutative five-term relation $T_{1,0} T_{0,1} = T_{0,1} T_{1,1} T_{1,0}$ is shown to hold for certain operators acting on symmetric functions. The "generalized recursion" conjecture of Bergeron and Haiman is a corollary of this result.

Rationality proofs by curve counting

We propose an approach for showing rationality of an algebraic variety $X$. We try to cover $X$ by rational curves of certain type and count how many curves pass through a generic point. If the answer is $1$, then we can sometimes reduce the question of rationality of $X$ to the question of rationality of a closed subvariety of $X$. This approach is applied to the case of the so-called Ueno-Campana manifolds. Our experiments indicate that the previously open cases $X_{4,6}$ and $X_{5,6}$ are both rational. However, this result is not rigorously justified and depends on a heuristic argument and a Monte Carlo type computer simulation. In an unexpected twist, existence of lattices $D_6$, $E_8$ and $Λ_{10}$ turns out to be crucial.

Integrality of HLV kernels

We prove that the coefficients of the generating function of Hausel, Letellier, Villegas, and its recent generalization by Carlsson and Villegas, which according to various conjectures should compute mixed Hodge numbers of character varieties and moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of curves of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integer coefficients for any $g,n\geq 0$.

$\mathbb{Z} R$ and rings of Witt vectors $W_S (R)$

Using $λ$ operations, we give some results on the kernel of the natural map from the monoid algebra $\mathbb{Z} R$ of a commutative ring $R$ to the ring of $S$-Witt vectors of $R$. As a byproduct we obtain a very natural interpretation of a power series used by Dwork in his proof of the rationality of zeta functions for varieties over finite fields.

Mirror symmetry with branes by equivariant Verlinde formulae

We find an agreement of equivariant indices of semi-classical homomorphisms between pairwise mirror branes in the GL(2) Higgs moduli space on a Riemann surface. On one side we have the components of the Lagrangian brane of U(1,1) Higgs bundles whose mirror was proposed by Nigel Hitchin to be certain even exterior powers of the hyperholomorphic Dirac bundle on the SL(2) Higgs moduli space. The agreement arises from a mysterious functional equation. This gives strong computational evidence for Hitchin's proposal.

Poincare polynomials of character varieties, Macdonald polynomials and affine Springer fibers

We prove an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomials of parabolic character varieties of Riemann surfaces with semisimple local monodromies, which was conjectured by Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Using an approach of Mozgovoy and Schiffmann the problem is reduced to counting pairs of a parabolic vector bundles and a nilpotent endomorphism of prescribed generic type. The generating function counting these pairs is shown to be a product of Macdonald polynomials and the function counting pairs without parabolic structure. The modified Macdonald polynomial $\tilde H_λ[X;q,t]$ is interpreted as a weighted count of points of the affine Springer fiber over the constant nilpotent matrix of type $λ$.

The $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ algebra and parabolic flag Hilbert schemes

The earlier work of the first and the third named authors introduced the algebra $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ and its polynomial representation. In this paper we construct an action of this algebra on the equivariant K-theory of certain smooth strata in the flag Hilbert schemes of points on the plane. In this presentation, the fixed points of torus action correspond to generalized Macdonald polynomials and the the matrix elements of the operators have explicit combinatorial presentation.

Poincaré polynomials of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles and character varieties (no punctures)

Using our earlier results on polynomiality properties of plethystic logarithms of generating series of certain type we show that Schiffmann's formulas for various counts of Higgs bundles over finite fields can be reduced to much simpler formulas conjectured by Mozgovoy. In particular, our result implies the conjecture of Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas on the Poincaré polynomials of twisted character varieties and the conjecture of Hausel and Thaddeus on independence of $E$-polynomials on the degree.

On quantum cohomology of Grassmannians of isotropic lines, unfoldings of $A_n$-singularities, and Lefschetz exceptional collections

The subject of this paper is the big quantum cohomology rings of symplectic isotropic Grassmannians $\text{IG}(2, 2n)$. We show that these rings are regular. In particular, by "generic smoothness", we obtain a conceptual proof of generic semisimplicity of the big quantum cohomology for $\text{IG}(2, 2n)$. Further, by a general result of Claus Hertling, the regularity of these rings implies that they have a description in terms of isolated hypersurface singularities, which we show in this case to be of type $A_{n-1}$. By the homological mirror symmetry conjecture, these results suggest the existence of a very special full exceptional collection in the derived category of coherent sheaves on $\text{IG}(2, 2n)$. Such a collection is constructed in the appendix by Alexander Kuznetsov.

Homology of torus knots

Using the method of Elias-Hogancamp and combinatorics of toric braids we give an explicit formula for the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of an arbitrary torus knot, thereby proving some of the conjectures of Aganagic-Shakirov, Cherednik, Gorsky-Negut and Oblomkov-Rasmussen-Shende.

Finite hypergeometric functions

Finite hypergeometric functions are complex valued functions on finite fields which are the analogue of the classical analytic hypergeometric functions. From the work of N.M.Katz it follows that their values are traces of Frobenius on certain l-adic sheafs. More concretely, in many instances their values can be used to give formulas for pointcounts of F_q-rational points on certain varieties. In this paper we work out the case of one-variable functions whose monodromy in the analytic case can be defined over the rational integers.

Toric braids and $(m,n)$-parking functions

The Dyck path algebra construction of Carlsson and Mellit from arXiv:1508.06239 is interpreted as a representation of "the positive part" of the group of toric braids. Then certain sums over $(m,n)$-parking functions are related to evaluations of this representation on some special braids. The compositional $(km,kn)$-shuffle conjecture of Bergeron, Garsia, Leven and Xin from arXiv:1404.4616 is then shown to be a corollary of this relation.

Dubrovin's conjecture for $IG(2,6)$

We show that the big quantum cohomology of the symplectic isotropic Grassmanian $IG(2,6)$ is generically semisimple, whereas its small quantum cohomology is known to be non-semisimple. This gives yet another case where Dubrovin's conjecture holds and stresses the need to consider the big quantum cohomology in its formulation.

Minifolds and Phantoms

A minifold is a smooth projective $n$-dimensional variety such that its bounded derived category of coherent sheaves $\D^b(X)$ admits a semi-orthogonal decomposition into an exceptional collection of $n+1$ exceptional objects. In this paper we classify minifolds of dimension $n \leq 4$. We conjecture that the derived category of fake projective spaces have a similar semi-orthogonal decomposition into a collection of $n+1$ exceptional objects and a category with vanishing Hochschild homology. We prove this for fake projective planes with non-abelian automorphism group. We construct new examples of phantom categories with both Hochschild homology and Grothendieck group vanishing.
