Tensor network study of deconfined quantum criticality in a one-dimensional spin-phonon model

Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) describe continuous transitions between ordered phases beyond the Landau paradigm. A simple example is the N\'eel antiferromagnet (AFM) to valence bond solid (VBS) transition in a 1D antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ model. In analogy to the spin-Peierls instability of critical spin chains, DQCPs are predicted to be unstable towards lattice distortions below a critical phonon frequency. In this work, we use tensor network simulations to investigate this instability in the antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ model coupled to lattice vibrations. We confirm the stability of DQCP for large phonon frequencies and demonstrate that the transition turns strongly first-order below a critical frequency. The instability is caused by a reduction of the Luttinger parameter due to spin-phonon interactions and we identify the effective theory of the behavior as the double sine-Gordon model. The same effective theory is known to describe the classical Ashkin-Teller model, which enables us to show that the critical endpoint is in the four-state Potts universality class. Furthermore, we provide quantitative numerical scaling results for the phonon spectral function, offering an experimental signature to probe DQCP-phonon coupling in low-dimensional materials.

Fractionalized Prethermalization in the One-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Prethermalization phenomena in driven systems are generally understood via a local Floquet Hamiltonian obtained from a high-frequency expansion. Remarkably, recently it has been shown that a driven Kitaev spin liquid with fractionalized excitations can realize a quasi-stationary state that is not captured by this paradigm. Instead distinct types of fractionalized excitations are characterized by vastly different temperatures-a phenomenon dubbed "fractionalized prethermalization". In our work, we analyze fractionalized prethermalization in a driven one-dimensional Hubbard model at strong coupling which hosts spin-charge fractionalization. At intermediate frequencies quasi-steady states emerge which are characterized by a low spin and high charge temperature with lifetimes set by two competing processes: the lifetime of the quasiparticles determined by Fermi's Golden rule and the exponentially long lifetime of a Floquet prethermal plateau. We classify drives into three categories, each giving rise to distinct (fractional) prethermalization dynamics. Resorting to a time-dependent variant of the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we systematically analyze how these drive categories are linked to the underlying driven Hubbard model, thereby providing a general understanding of the emergent thermalization dynamics. We discuss routes towards an experimental realization of this phenomenon in quantum simulation platforms.

Tensor Network Python (TeNPy) version 1

TeNPy (short for 'Tensor Network Python') is a python library for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum systems with tensor networks. The philosophy of this library is to achieve a balance of readability and usability for new-comers, while at the same time providing powerful algorithms for experts. The focus is on MPS algorithms for 1D and 2D lattices, such as DMRG ground state search, as well as dynamics using TEBD, TDVP, or MPO evolution. This article is a companion to the recent version 1.0 release of TeNPy and gives a brief overview of the package.

Deconfined Quantum Criticality in the long-range, anisotropic Heisenberg Chain

Deconfined quantum criticality describes continuous phase transitions that are not captured by the Landau-Ginzburg paradigm. Here, we investigate deconfined quantum critical points in the long-range, anisotropic Heisenberg chain. With matrix product state simulations, we show that the model undergoes a continuous phase transition from a valence bond solid to an antiferromagnet. We extract the critical exponents of the transition and connect them to an effective field theory obtained from bosonization techniques. We show that beyond stabilizing the valance bond order, the long-range interactions are irrelevant and the transition is well described by a double frequency sine-Gordon model. We propose how to realize and probe deconfined quantum criticality in our model with trapped-ion quantum simulators.
