Zak Phase Dislocations in Trimer Lattices

Wave propagation in periodic media is governed by energy-momentum relation and geometric phases characterizing band topology, such as Zak phase in one-dimensional lattices. We demonstrate that in the off-diagonal trimer lattices Zak phase carries quantized screw-type dislocations winding around degeneracies in parameter space. If the lattice evolves in time periodically, as in adiabatic Thouless pump, corresponding closed trajectory in parameter space is characterized by a Chern number equal the negative total winding number of Zak phase dislocations enclosed by the trajectory. We discuss correspondence between bulk Chern numbers and the edge-states in a finite system evolving along various pumping cycles.

Localization of weakly disordered flat band states

Certain tight binding lattices host macroscopically degenerate flat spectral bands. Their origin is rooted in local symmetries of the lattice, with destructive interference leading to the existence of compact localized eigenstates. We study the robustness of this localization to disorder in different classes of flat band lattices in one and two dimensions. Depending on the flat band class, the flat band states can either be robust, preserving their strong localization for weak disorder W, or they are destroyed and acquire large localization lengths $ξ$ that diverge with a variety of unconventional exponents $ν$, $ξ\sim 1/W^ν$.

Conical intersections for light and matter waves

We review the design, theory, and applications of two dimensional periodic lattices hosting conical intersections in their energy-momentum spectrum. The best known example is the Dirac cone, where propagation is governed by an effective Dirac equation, with electron spin replaced by a "fermionic" half-integer pseudospin. However, in many systems such as metamaterials, modal symmetries result in the formation of higher order conical intersections with integer or "bosonic" pseudospin. The ability to engineer lattices with these qualitatively different singular dispersion relations opens up many applications, including superior slab lasers, generation of orbital angular momentum, zero-index metamaterials, and quantum simulation of exotic phases of relativistic matter.

Slow phonon vortices and defect modes in periodic nano-waveguides

We identify a broad class of phonon modes with persistent vortex fluxes at arbitrarily slow propagating velocities in periodic nano-waveguides. Such phonon vortices are associated with the split band-edges in dispersion dependencies, which can be engineered by waveguide design. Modulations introduced in such waveguides can support a pair of defect cavity phonon modes with an arbitrarily small frequency splitting. These features can find applications for sensing and nano-manipulation.

Lattice topology and spontaneous parametric down-conversion in quadratic nonlinear waveguide arrays

We analyze spontaneous parametric down-conversion in various experimentally feasible 1D quadratic nonlinear waveguide arrays, with emphasis on the relationship between the lattice's topological invariants and the biphoton correlations. Nontrivial topology results in a nontrivial "winding" of the array's Bloch waves, which introduces additional selection rules for the generation of biphotons. These selection rules are in addition to, and independent of existing control using the pump beam's spatial profile and phase matching conditions. In finite lattices, nontrivial topology produces single photon edge modes, resulting in "hybrid" biphoton edge modes, with one photon localized at the edge and the other propagating into the bulk. When the single photon band gap is sufficiently large, these hybrid biphoton modes reside in a band gap of the bulk biphoton Bloch wave spectrum. Numerical simulations support our analytical results.

Creation of orbital angular momentum states with chiral polaritonic lenses

Controlled transfer of orbital angular momentum to exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate spontaneously created under incoherent, off-resonant excitation conditions is a long-standing challenge in the field of microcavity polaritonics. We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, a simple and efficient approach to generation of nontrivial orbital angular momentum states by using optically-induced potentials -- chiral polaritonic lenses.

Detangling Flat Bands into Fano Lattices

Macroscopically degenerate flat bands (FB) in periodic lattices host compact localized states which appear due to destructive interference and local symmetry. Interference provides a deep connection between the existence of flat band states (FBS) and the appearance of Fano resonances for wave propagation. We introduce generic transformations detangling FBS and dispersive states into lattices of Fano defects. Inverting the transformation, we generate a continuum of FB models. Our procedure allows us to systematically treat perturbations such as disorder and explain the emergence of energy-dependent localization length scaling in terms of Fano resonances.

Flat band states: disorder and nonlinearity

We study the critical behaviour of Anderson localized modes near intersecting flat and dispersive bands in the quasi-one-dimensional diamond ladder with weak diagonal disorder $W$. The localization length $ξ$ of the flat band states scales with disorder as $ξ\sim W^{-γ}$, with $γ\approx 1.3$, in contrast to the dispersive bands with $γ=2$. A small fraction of dispersive modes mixed with the flat band states is responsible for the unusual scaling. Anderson localization is therefore controlled by two different length scales. Nonlinearity can produce qualitatively different wave spreading regimes, from enhanced expansion to resonant tunneling and self-trapping.

Discrete vortex solitons and PT symmetry

We study the effect of lifting the degeneracy of vortex modes with a PT symmetric defect, using discrete vortices in a circular array of nonlinear waveguides as an example. When the defect is introduced, the degenerate linear vortex modes spontaneously break PT symmetry and acquire complex eigenvalues, but nonlinear propagating modes with real propagation constants can still exist. The stability of nonlinear modes depends on both the magnitude and the sign of the vortex charge, thus PT symmetric systems offer new mechanisms to control discrete vortices.

Composite vortices in nonlinear circular waveguide arrays

It is known that, in continuous media, composite solitons with hidden vorticity, which are built of two mutually symmetric vortical components whose total angular momentum is zero, may be stable while their counterparts with explicit vorticity and nonzero total angular momentum are unstable. In this work, we demonstrate that the opposite occurs in discrete media: hidden vortex states in relatively small ring chains become unstable with the increase of the total power, while explicit vortices are stable, provided that the corresponding scalar vortex state is also stable. There are also stable mixed states, in which the components are vortices with different topological charges. Additionally, degeneracies in families of composite vortex modes lead to the existence of long-lived breather states which can exhibit vortex charge fipping in one or both components.

Dissipative solitons and vortices in polariton superfluids

We examine spatial localisation and dynamical stability of Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons in microcavities under the condition of off-resonant spatially inhomogeneous optical pumping both with and without a harmonic trapping potential. We employ the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii model for describing an incoherently pumped polariton condensate coupled to an exciton reservoir, and reveal that spatial localisation of the steady-state condensate occurs due to the effective self-trapping created by the polariton flows supported by the spatially inhomogeneous pump, regardless of the presence of the external potential. A ground state of the polariton condensate with repulsive interactions between the quasiparticles represents a dynamically stable bright dissipative soliton. We also investigate the conditions for sustaining spatially localised structures with non-zero angular momentum in the form of single-charge vortices.

Discrete multivortex solitons

We introduce discrete multivortex solitons in a ring of nonlinear oscillators coupled to a central site. Regular clusters of discrete vortices appear as a result of mode collisions and we show that their stability is determined by global symmetries rather than the stability of constituent vortices. Stable multivortex solitons support complex vortex dynamics including charge flipping and spiraling.

Multimode nematicon waveguides

We report on the first experimental observation of higher-order modes guided by soliton-induced waveguides in unbiased nematic liquid crystals. We find that the nematicon waveguides operate in a bounded power region specific to each guided mode. Below this region the guided beams diffract, above it the mode mixing and coupling give rise to an unstable output.

Interaction of nematicons in a bias-free liquid crystal cell

We study experimentally the propagation dynamics and interaction of spatial optical solitons in a bias-free cell filled with nematic liquid crystals. We reveal and measure long-range effects due to the cell boundaries for a single nematicon as well as for the interacting in-phase and out-of-phase nematicons. We discuss the effect of initial beam focusing and relative input angle on the interaction of in-phase nematicons.

Optical guiding of absorbing nanoclusters in air

We introduce a novel approach for all-optical trapping and manipulation of absorbing aerosol particles based on a photophoretic force. We demonstrate experimentally, in open air, the robust three-dimensional guiding of agglomerates of carbon nanoparticles with the size spanned for two orders of magnitude, from 100 nanometers to 10 microns, over the distances of a few millimeters, as well as their acceleration up to velocities of 1 cm/s and simultaneous trapping of a large number of particles.

Stable rotating dipole solitons in nonlocal optical media

We reveal that nonlocality can provide a simple physical mechanism for stabilization of multi-hump optical solitons, and present the first example of stable rotating dipole solitons and soliton spiraling, known to be unstable in all types of realistic nonlinear media with local response.

Photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional optical lattices

We report on the first experimental observation of photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional periodic systems. We study the propagation of an optical beam in a square photonic lattice superimposed on a refractive index ramp, and demonstrate the tunneling of light from the first to the higher-order transmission bands of the lattice bandgap spectrum, associated with the spectral dynamics inside the first Brillouin zone and corresponding oscillations of the primary beam.

Focusing and correlation properties of white-light optical vortices

We generate double-charge white-light optical vortices by sending a circularly polarized partially incoherent light through an uniaxial crystal. We show that the generated polichromatic vortices are structurally stable, and their correlation properties can be altered by the beam focusing, resulting in changes of the vortex core visibility.
