Holonomy in pseudo-Hermitian geometry

We study the holonomy that is associated to a sub-Riemannian structure defined on the kernel of a global contact form. This includes the holonomy of Schouten's horizontal connection as well as of the adapted connection, both canonical invariants of the structure. Under a condition on the torsion of the structure, we show that they are either equal or that the former is a codimension one normal subgroup of the latter. Furthermore, we establish a close relation to Riemannian holonomy, which yields a complete holonomy classification in the torsion-free case. For the main result we focus on the special case of pseudo-Hermitian structures and give a classification of holonomy algebras for both the Schouten and the adapted connection. Based on this, we derive a classification of symmetric sub-Riemannian structures and of of those holonomy groups that admit parallel spinors. Finally we exhibit a relation between locally symmetric sub-Riemannian contact structures and locally homogeneous Riemannian structures.

Holonomy of K-contact sub-Riemannian manifolds

It is shown that the horizontal holonomy group of a K-contact sub-Riemannian manifold either coincides with the holonomy group of a Riemannian manifold, or it is a codimension-one normal subgroup of the later group. The question of existence of parallel horizontal spinors, examples, and consequences are discussed.

Conformally homogeneous Lorentzian spaces

We prove that if a 1-connected non-conformally flat conformal Lorentzian manifold $(M,c)$ admits a connected essential transitive group of conformal transformations, then there exists a metric $g\in c$ such that $(M,g)$ is a complete homogeneous plane wave. This finishes the classification of 1-connected Lorentzian manifolds, which admit transitive essential conformal group. We also prove that the group of conformal transformations of a non-conformally flat 1-connected homogeneous plane wave $(M,g)$ consists of homotheties, and it is a 1-dimensional extension of the group of isometries.

On Losik classes of diffeomorphism pseudogroups

Let $P$ be a pseudogroup of local diffeomorphisms of an $n$-dimensional smooth manifold $M$. Following Losik we consider characteristic classes of the quotient $M/P$ as elements of the de~Rham cohomology of the second order frame bundles over $M/P$ coming from the generators of the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology. We provide explicit expressions for the classes that we call Godbillon-Vey-Losik class and the first Chern-Losik class. Reducing the frame bundles we construct bundles over $M/P$ such that the Godbillon-Vey-Losik class is represented by a volume form on a space of dimension $2n+1$, and the first Chern-Losik class is represented by a symplectic form on a space of dimension $2n$. Examples in dimension 2 are considered.

Recurrent Lorentzian Weyl spaces

We find the local form of all non-closed Lorentzian Weyl manifolds $(M,c,\nabla)$ with recurrent curvature tensor. If the dimension of the manifold is greater than 3, then the conformal structure is flat, and the recurrent Weyl structure is locally determined by a single function. Two local structures are equivalent if and only if the corresponding functions are related by a transformation from $\mathrm{SAff}_1(\mathbb{R}) \times \mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R}) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$. We find generators for the field of rational scalar differential invariants of this Lie group action. The global structure of the manifold $M$ may be described in terms of a foliation with a transversal projective structure. It is shown that all locally homogeneous structures are locally equivalent, and there is only one simply connected homogeneous non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifold. Moreover, there are 5 classes of cohomogeneity-one spaces, and all other spaces are of cohomogeneity-two. If $\dim M=3$, the non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl structures are locally determined by one function of two variables or two functions of one variables, depending on whether its holonomy algebra is 1- or 2-dimensional. In this case, two structures with the same holonomy algebra are locally equivalent if and only if they are related, respectively, by a transformation from an infinite-dimensional Lie pseudogroup or a 4-dimensional subgroup of $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb R^3)$. Again we provide generators for the field of rational differential invariants. We find a local expression for the locally homogeneous non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifolds of dimension 3, and also of those of cohomogeneity one and two. In the end we give a local description of the non-closed recurrent Lorentzian Weyl manifolds that are also Einstein-Weyl. All of them are 3-dimensional and have a 2-dimensional holonomy algebra.

Lorentzian connections with parallel twistor-free torsion

We describe Lorentzian manifolds that admit metric connections with parallel torsion having zero twistorial component and non-zero vectorial component. We also describe Lorentzian manifolds admitting metric connections with closed parallel skew-symmetric torsion.

On Lorentzian connections with parallel skew torsion

The paper is devoted to metric connections with parallel skew-symmetric torsion in Lorentzian signature. This is motivated by recent progress in the Riemannian signature and by possible applications to supergravity theories. We provide a complete information about holonomy algebras, torsion and curvature of the considered connections up to the corresponding objects from the Riemannian signature. Various examples are constructed. It is shown how to construct all simply connected Lorentzian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces of arbitrary dimension from Riemannian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces. This leads to complete classification of Lorentzian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces in low dimensions.

Parallel spinors on Lorentzian Weyl spaces

Holonomy algebras of Lorentzian Weyl spin manifolds with weighted parallel spinors are found. For Lorentzian Weyl manifolds admitting recurrent null vector fields are introduced special local coordinates similar to Kundt and Walker ones. Using that, the local form of all Lorentzian Weyl spin manifolds with weighted parallel spinors is given. The Einstein-Weyl equation for the obtained Weyl structures is analyzed and examples of Einstein-Weyl spaces with weighted parallel spinors are given.

Non-diffeomorphic Reeb foliations and modified Godbillon-Vey class

The paper deals with a modified Godbillon-Vey class defined by Losik for codimension-one foliations. This characteristic class takes values in the cohomology of the second order frame bundle over the leaf space of the foliation. The definition of the Reeb foliation depends upon two real functions satisfying certain conditions. All these foliations are pairwise homeomorphic and have trivial Godbillon-Vey class. We show that the modified Godbillon-Vey is non-trivial for some Reeb foliations and it is trivial for some other Reeb foliations. In particular, the modified Godbillon-Vey class can distinguish non-diffeomorphic foliations and it provides more information than the classical Godbillon-Vey class. We also show that this class is non-trivial for some foliations on the two-dimensional surfaces.

Losik classes for codimension-one foliations

Following Losik's approach to Gelfand's formal geometry, certain characteristic classes for codimension-one foliations coming from the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology are considered. Sufficient conditions for non-triviality in terms of dynamical properties of generators of the holonomy groups are found. The non-triviality for the Reeb foliations is shown; this is in contrast with some classical theorems on the Godbillon-Vey class, e.g, the Mizutani-Morita-Tsuboi Theorem about triviality of the Godbillon-Vey class of foliations almost without holonomy is not true for the classes under consideration. It is shown that the considered classes are trivial for a large class of foliations without holonomy. The question of triviality is related to ergodic theory of dynamical systems on the circle and to the problem of smooth conjugacy of local diffeomorphisms. Certain classes are obstructions for the existence of transverse affine and projective connections.

Comparison of approaches to characteristic classes of foliations

It is shown that the characteristic classes of foliations that were defined by Losik and that take values in the de~Rham cohomology of the space of infinite order frames over the leaf space may be mapped to the characteristic classes with values in the Čech-de~Rham cohomology of the leaf space studied in details by Crainic and Moerdijk. This map is in general non-injective. All constructions are done using Losik's approach to Gelfand formal geometry. A similar result is obtained for the exotic characteristic classes as well as for the group actions of the diffeomorphisms. As illustrating examples, foliations of codimension one are discussed.

Holonomy classification of Lorentz-Kähler manifolds

The classification problem for holonomy of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is actual and open. In the present paper, holonomy algebras of Lorentz-Kähler manifolds are classified. A simple construction of a metric for each holonomy algebra is given. Complex Walker coordinates are introduced and described using the potential. Complex pp-waves are characterized in terms of the curvature, holonomy and the potential. Classification of Lorentz-Kähler symmetric spaces is reviewed.

Holonomy algebras of Einstein pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

The holonomy algebras of Einstein not Ricci-flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary signature are classified. As illustrating examples, the cases of Lorentzian manifolds, pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(2,n)$ and the para-quaternionic-Kählerian manifolds with non-zero scalar curvature are considered. Einstein not Ricci-flat metrics of signature $(2,n)$ with all possible holonomy algebras are given.

Attractors of Cartan foliations

The paper is focused on the existence problem of attractors for foliations. Since the existence of an attractor is a transversal property of the foliation, it is natural to consider foliations admitting transversal geometric structures. As transversal structures are chosen Cartan geometries due to their universality. The existence problem of an attractor on a complete Cartan foliation is reduced to a similar problem for the action of its structure Lie group on a certain smooth manifold. In the case of a complete Cartan foliation with a structure subordinated to a transformation group, the problem is reduced to the level of the global holonomy group of this foliation. Each countable automorphism group preserving a Cartan geometry on a manifold and admitting an attractor is realized as the global holonomy group of some Cartan foliation with an attractor. Conditions on the linear holonomy group of a leaf of a reductive Cartan foliation sufficient for the existence of an attractor (and a global attractor) which is a minimal set are found. Various examples are considered.

Classification of connected holonomy groups of pseudo-Kählerian manifolds of index 2

The problem of classification of connected holonomy groups (equivalently of holonomy algebras) for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is open. The classification of Riemannian holonomy algebras is a classical result. The classification of Lorentzian holonomy algebras was obtained recently. In the present paper weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras of $\su(1,n+1)$ ($n\geq 0$) are classified. Weakly-irreducible not irreducible holonomy algebras of pseudo-Kählerian and special pseudo-Kählerian manifolds are classified. An example of metric for each possible holonomy algebra is given. This gives the classification of holonomy algebras for pseudo-Kählerian manifolds of index 2

How to find the holonomy algebra of a Lorentzian manifold

Manifolds with exceptional holonomy play an important role in string theory, supergravity and M-theory. It is explained how one can find the holonomy algebra of an arbitrary Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold. Using the de~Rham and Wu decompositions, this problem is reduced to the case of locally indecomposable manifolds. In the case of locally indecomposable Riemannian manifolds, it is known that the holonomy algebra can be found from the analysis of special geometric structures on the manifold. If the holonomy algebra $\mathfrak{g}\subset\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1)$ of a locally indecomposable Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n$ is different from $\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1)$, then it is contained in the similitude algebra $\mathfrak{sim}(n-2)$. There are 4 types of such holonomy algebras. Criterion how to find the type of $\mathfrak{g}$ are given, and special geometric structures corresponding to each type are described. To each $\mathfrak{g}$ there is a canonically associated subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{so}(n-2)$. An algorithm how to find $\mathfrak{h}$ is provided.

Holonomy groups of Lorentzian manifolds

In this paper, a survey of the recent results about the classification of the connected holonomy groups of the Lorentzian manifolds is given. A simplification of the construction of the Lorentzian metrics with all possible connected holonomy groups is obtained. As the applications, the Einstein equation, Lorentzian manifolds with parallel and recurrent spinor fields, conformally flat Walker metrics and the classification of 2-symmetric Lorentzian manifolds are considered.

On the de Rham-Wu decomposition for Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds

It is explained how to find the de~Rham decomposition of a Riemannian manifold and the Wu decomposition of a Lorentzian manifold. For that it is enough to find parallel symmetric bilinear forms on the manifold, and do some linear algebra. This result will allow to compute the connected holonomy group of an arbitrary Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold.
