Equivalence of weak solution concepts for mean curvature flow

We provide a connection between weak solution concepts of mean curvature flow. On the one side we have the viscosity solution which is based on the comparison principle. On the other, variational solutions, which are combined Brakke flows and distributional solutions. We prove that if one has a foliation by variational solutions, then the resulting function is the unique viscosity solution. This answers an open question suggested by the work of Evans and Spruck [J. Geom. Anal., 5(1), 1995] and the authors [J. Geom. Anal., 34(12), 2024]. These results show that almost every level set of the viscosity solution is a variational solution. Thus, we establish the equivalence of these solution concepts. Moreover, we show the generic uniqueness of variational solutions.

The heat flow on glued spaces with varying dimension

In this paper, we introduce a new concept of glued manifolds and investigate under which conditions the canonical heat flow on these glued manifolds is ergodic and irreducible. Glued manifolds are metric spaces consisting of manifolds of varying dimension connected by a weakly doubling measure. This can be seen as a condition on the jump in dimension. From another perspective, this construction also defines the Brownian motion on these glued spaces. Using the heat flow, we construct a nonlocal perimeter functional, the heat excess, to raise the question of its $Γ$-convergence to the standard perimeter functional. In this context, we connect our work to the previous work on the convergence of perimeter functionals, approximations, and existence of heat kernels, as well as short-time expansions of Brownian motion.

Generic level sets in mean curvature flow are BV solutions

We show that a generic levelset of the viscosity solution to mean curvature flow is a distributional solution in the framework of sets of finite perimeter by Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker, which in addition saturates the optimal energy dissipation rate. This extends the fundamental work of Evans and Spruck (J. Geom. Anal. 1995), which draws a similar connection between the viscosity solution and Brakke flows.

Median filter method for mean curvature flow using a random Jacobi algorithm

We present an efficient scheme for level set mean curvature flow using a domain discretization and median filters. For this scheme, we show convergence in $L^\infty$-norm under mild assumptions on the number of points in the discretization. In addition, we strengthen the weak convergence result for the MBO thresholding scheme applied to data clustering of Lelmi and one of the authors. This is done through a strong convergence of the discretized heat flow in the optimal regime. Different boundary conditions are also discussed.
