Duality Symmetric Electrodynamics in Curved Spacetime

We derive Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields in curved spacetime from first principles, relaxing an unnecessary assumption on the structure of the four-potential inherent to the standard approach and thus restoring the full consistency with the equivalence principle in the following two important cases: first, if the electromagnetic field is considered as a physical entity separate from the charged particles used to measure it, and second, if hypothetical magnetically charged particles are allowed to exist. We find that in a generic curved spacetime, the electromagnetic field has to be described by two pairs of electric and magnetic fields, instead of the only one pair which is enough in the flat spacetime case.

Generic axion Maxwell equations: path integral approach

Using the path integral approach, we derive the low energy interactions between axions and electromagnetic field that arise in models with heavy dyons charged under a spontaneously broken global axial $U(1)$ symmetry. Hence, we obtain generic axion-Maxwell equations relevant for experimental searches. We find that the structure of the axion Maxwell equations could be significantly different compared to what is normally assumed in the literature, as the derived equations feature new axion-dependent terms including CP-violating ones. The new terms can reconcile the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem with astrophysical axion hints, as well as give unique signatures in light-shining-through-wall and haloscope experiments. Moreover, via the latter signatures, these experiments can indirectly probe the existence of heavy dyons.

Searching for GUT-scale QCD Axions and Monopoles with a High Voltage Capacitor

The QCD axion has been postulated to exist because it solves the strong CP problem. Furthermore, if it exists axions should be created in the early Universe and could account for all the observed dark matter. In particular, axion masses of order $10^{-10}$ to $10^{-7}$ eV correspond to axions in the vicinity of the GUT-scale. In this mass range many experiments have been proposed to search for the axion through the standard QED coupling parameter $g_{aγγ}$. Recently axion electrodynamics has been expanded to include two more coupling parameters, $g_{aEM}$ and $g_{aMM}$, which could arise if heavy magnetic monopoles exist. In this work we show that both $g_{aMM}$ and $g_{aEM}$ may be searched for using a high voltage capacitor. Since the experiment is not sensitive to $g_{aγγ}$, it gives a new way to search for effects of heavy monopoles if the GUT-scale axion is shown to exist, or to simultaneously search for both the axion and the monopole at the same time.

Electromagnetic Couplings of Axions

We show that, contrary to assertions in the literature, the main contribution to the axion-photon coupling need not be quantized in the units proportional to $e^2$. In particular, we discuss a loophole in the argument for this quantization and then provide explicit counterexamples. Hence, we construct a generic axion-photon effective Lagrangian and find that the axion-photon coupling may be dominated by previously unknown Wilson coefficients. We show that this result implies a significant modification of conventional axion electrodynamics and sets new targets for axion experiments. At the core of our theoretical analysis lies a critical reexamination of the interactions between axions and magnetic monopoles. We show that, contrary to claims in the literature, magnetic monopoles need not give mass to axions. Moreover, we find that a future detection of an axion or axion-like particle with certain parameters can serve as evidence for the existence of magnetically charged matter.

Magnetic anomaly coefficients for QCD axion couplings

We argue that there are both experimental and theoretical reasons to reconsider the construction of KSVZ-like axion models. From the experimental side, predictions for the axion-photon coupling are not consistent with the collection of astrophysical hints. From the theoretical side, we find that the construction can be conceptually simplified. In particular, it contains an unnecessary assumption on the type of the gauge theory involved which has far-reaching consequences for low energy axion phenomenology. In order to relax this assumption, we allow heavy fermions of the KSVZ-like models to carry magnetic charge. We then show that the axion-photon coupling is generically dominated by the axial anomaly of magnetic currents. Finally, we derive the expression for magnetic anomaly coefficients, which determine the range of numerical values for the axion-photon coupling.

Photophilic hadronic axion from heavy magnetic monopoles

We propose a model for the QCD axion which is realized through a coupling of the Peccei-Quinn scalar field to magnetically charged fermions at high energies. We show that the axion of this model solves the strong CP problem and then integrate out heavy magnetic monopoles using the Schwinger proper time method. We find that the model discussed yields axion couplings to the Standard Model which are drastically different from the ones calculated within the KSVZ/DFSZ-type models, so that large part of the corresponding parameter space can be probed by various projected experiments. Moreover, the axion we introduce is consistent with the astrophysical hints suggested both by anomalous TeV-transparency of the Universe and by excessive cooling of horizontal branch stars in globular clusters. We argue that the leading term for the cosmic axion abundance is not changed compared to the conventional pre-inflationary QCD axion case for axion decay constant $f_a > 10^{12}~\text{GeV}$.

Generic energy transport solutions to the solar abundance problem -- a hint of new physics

First, we briefly review the solar abundance problem and its current status. We start with the description of the existing theoretical model of the Sun and its main uncertainties and proceed with the discussion of the observational evidence for the anomaly. We conclude the review part by outlining the main approaches to solving the solar abundance problem investigated before. In the second part of the paper we consider the poorly studied before non-diffusive energy transport solutions to the problem. We calculate the additional energy flux inside the Sun evidenced by the combined data from helioseismology, spectroscopy and solar neutrino detection experiments. Our findings suggest that the solar abundance problem can be solved by a localized loss of energy near the radiative zone boundary and a gain of approximately the same amount of energy inside the solar core ($0.1R_{\odot} \lesssim r \lesssim 0.3R_{\odot}$). We show that if the localized loss of energy is associated with the resonant emission of transversely polarized hidden photons, the kinetic mixing parameter required does not contradict any of the existing constraints, the ones from the Sun being relaxed as long as the energy loss is compensated by energy deposition inside the core. We introduce then the light dark fermions coupled to hidden photons and discuss their interactions with the solar plasma. We find the distribution of these dark particles inside the inner part of the radiative zone which is required to provide the necessary heating of the core.

Possibility of hypothetical stable micro black hole production at future 100 TeV collider

We study the phenomenology of TeV-scale black holes predicted in theories with large extra dimensions, under the further assumption that they are absolutely stable. Our goal is to present an exhaustive analysis of safety of the proposed 100 TeV collider, as it was done in the case of the LHC. We consider the theories with different number of extra dimensions and identify those for which a possible accretion to macroscopic size would have timescales shorter than the lifetime of the Solar system. We calculate the cross sections of the black hole production at the proposed 100 TeV collider, the fraction of the black holes trapped inside the Earth and the resulting rate of capture inside the Earth via an improved method. We study the astrophysical consequences of stable micro black holes existence, in particular its influence on the stability of white dwarfs and neutron stars. We obtain constraints for the previously unexplored range of higher-dimensional Planck mass values. Several astrophysical scenarios of the micro black hole production, which were not considered before, are taken into account. Finally, using the astrophysical constraints we consider the implications for future 100 TeV terrestrial experiments. We exclude the possibility of the charged stable micro black holes production.
