Square-tiled cyclic covers

A cyclic cover of the complex projective line branched at four appropriate points has a natural structure of a square-tiled surface. We describe the combinatorics of such a square-tiled surface, the geometry of the corresponding Teichmüller curve, and compute the Lyapunov exponents of the determinant bundle over the Teichmüller curve with respect to the geodesic flow. This paper includes a new example (announced by G. Forni and C. Matheus in \cite{Forni:Matheus}) of a Teichmüller curve of a square-tiled cyclic cover in a stratum of Abelian differentials in genus four with a maximally degenerate Kontsevich--Zorich spectrum (the only known example found previously by Forni in genus three also corresponds to a square-tiled cyclic cover \cite{ForniSurvey}). We present several new examples of Teichmüller curves in strata of holomorphic and meromorphic quadratic differentials with maximally degenerate Kontsevich--Zorich spectrum. Presumably, these examples cover all possible Teichmüller curves with maximally degenerate spectrum. We prove that this is indeed the case within the class of square-tiled cyclic covers.

Lyapunov spectrum of square-tiled cyclic covers

A cyclic cover over the Riemann sphere branched at four points inherits a natural flat structure from the "pillow" flat structure on the basic sphere. We give an explicit formula for all individual Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle over the corresponding arithmetic Teichmuller curve. The key technical element is evaluation of degrees of line subbundles of the Hodge bundle, corresponding to eigenspaces of the induced action of deck transformations.

Explicit Jenkins-Strebel representatives of all strata of Abelian and quadratic differentials

Moduli spaces of Abelian and quadratic differentials are stratified by multiplicities of zeroes; connected components of the strata correspond to ergodic components of the Teichmuller geodesic flow. It is known that the strata are not necessarily connected; the connected components were recently classified by M. Kontsevich and the author and by E. Lanneau. The strata can be also viewed as families of flat metrics with conical singularities and with Z/2Z-holonomy. For every connected component of each stratum of Abelian and quadratic differentials we construct an explicit representative which is a Jenkins-Strebel differential with a single cylinder. By an elementary variation of this construction we represent almost every Abelian (quadratic) differential in the corresponding connected component of the stratum as a polygon with identified pairs of edges, where combinatorics of identifications is explicitly described. Specifically, the combinatorics is expressed in terms of a generalized permutation. For any component of any stratum of Abelian and quadratic differentials we construct a generalized permutation (linear involution) in the corresponding extended Rauzy class.

Flat Surfaces

Various problems of geometry, topology and dynamical systems on surfaces as well as some questions concerning one-dimensional dynamical systems lead to the study of closed surfaces endowed with a flat metric with several cone-type singularities. Such flat surfaces are naturally organized into families which appear to be isomorphic to the moduli spaces of holomorphic one-forms. One can obtain much information about the geometry and dynamics of an individual flat surface by studying both its orbit under the Teichmuller geodesic flow and under the linear group action. In particular, the Teichmuller geodesic flow plays the role of a time acceleration machine (renormalization procedure) which allows to study the asymptotic behavior of interval exchange transformations and of surface foliations. This long survey is an attempt to present some selected ideas, concepts and facts in Teichmuller dynamics in a playful way.

Geodesics on Flat Surfaces

This short survey illustrates the ideas of Teichmuller dynamics. As a model application we consider the asymptotic topology of generic geodesics on a "flat" surface and count closed geodesics and saddle connections. This survey is based on the joint papers with A.Eskin and H.Masur and with M.Kontsevich.

Multiple Saddle Connections on Flat Surfaces and Principal Boundary of the Moduli Spaces of Quadratic Differentials

We describe typical degenerations of quadratic differentials thus describing ``generic cusps'' of the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles. The part of the boundary of the moduli space which does not arise from ``generic'' degenerations is often negligible in problems involving information on compactification of the moduli space. However, even for a typical degeneration one may have several short loops on the Riemann surface which shrink simultaneously. We explain this phenomenon, describe all rigid configurations of short loops, present a detailed description of analogs of desingularized stable curves arising here, and show how one can reconstruct a Riemann surface endowed with a quadratic differential which is close to a ``cusp'' by the corresponding point at the principal boundary.

Moduli Spaces of Abelian Differentials: The Principal Boundary, Counting Problems and the Siegel--Veech Constants

A holomorphic 1-form on a compact Riemann surface S naturally defines a flat metric on S with cone-type singularities. We present the following surprising phenomenon: having found a geodesic segment (saddle connection) joining a pair of conical points one can find with a nonzero probability another saddle connection on S having the same direction and the same length as the initial one. The similar phenomenon is valid for the families of parallel closed geodesics. We give a complete description of all possible configurations of parallel saddle connections (and of families of parallel closed geodesics) which might be found on a generic flat surface S. We count the number of saddle connections of length less than L on a generic flat surface S; we also count the number of admissible configurations of pairs (triples,...) of saddle connections; we count the analogous numbers of configurations of families of closed geodesics. By the previous result of A.Eskin and H.Masur these numbers have quadratic asymptotics with respect to L. Here we explicitly compute the constant in this quqadratic asymptotics for a configuration of every type. The constant is found from a Siegel--Veech formula. To perform this computation we elaborate the detailed description of the principal part of the boundary of the moduli space of holomorphic 1-forms and we find the numerical value of the normalized volume of the tubular neighborhood of the boundary. We use this for evaluation of integrals over the moduli space.
