Second-harmonic generation in plasmonic waveguides with nonlocal response and electron spill-out

Plasmonic waveguides provide an integrated platform to develop efficient nanoscale ultrafast photonic devices. Theoretical models that describe nonlinear optical phenomena in plasmonic waveguides, usually, only incorporate bulk nonlinearities, while nonlinearities that arise from metallic constituents remained unexplored. In this work, we present a method that enables a generalized treatment of the nonlinearities present in plasmonic waveguides and use it to calculate second-harmonic generation from free electrons through a hydrodynamic nonlocal description. As a general application of our method we also consider nonlinearities arising from the quantum hydrodynamic theory with electron spill-out. Our results may find applicability in design and analysis of integrated photonic platforms for nonlinear optics incorporating wide variety of nonlinear materials such as heavily doped semiconductors for mid-infrared applications.

Plasmonic sensing with FIB-milled 2D micro-arrays of truncated gold nano-pyramids

Plasmonic platforms are a promising solution for the next generation of low-cost, integrated biomedical sensors. However, fabricating these nanostructures often requires lengthy and challenging fabrication processes. Here we exploit the peculiar features of Focused Ion Beam milling to obtain single-step patterning of a plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) array of truncated gold nano-pyramids (TNP), with gaps as small as 17 nm. We describe the formation of plasmonic bandgaps in the arrangement of crossed tapered grooves that separate the nano-pyramids, and we demonstrate refractive index sensing via dark field imaging in patterned areas of 30 $μ$m $\times$ 30 $μ$m.

Experimental demonstration of a novel bio-sensing platform via plasmonic band gap formation in gold nano-patch arrays

We discuss the possibility of implementing a novel bio-sensing platform based on the observation of the shift of the leaky surface plasmon mode that occurs at the edge of the plasmonic band gap of metal gratings when an analyte is deposited on top of the metallic structure. We provide experimental proof of the sensing capabilities of a two-dimensional array of gold nano-patches by observing color variations in the diffracted field when the air overlayer is replaced with a small quantity of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). Effects of rounded corners and surface imperfections are also discussed. Finally, we also report proof of changes in color intensities as a function of the air/filling ratio of the structure and discuss their relation with the diffracted spectra.

Enhancement and Inhibition of Stimulated Processes in a Negative Index Cavity

We study second harmonic generation in a negative index material cavity. The transmission spectrum shows a gap between the electric and magnetic plasma frequencies, so that localized and anti-localized states are allowed at the band edges. The process is made efficient by local phase matching conditions between a forward-propagating pump and a backward-propagating second harmonic signal. By simultaneously exciting the cavity with counter-propagating pulses one is able to enhance or inhibit absorption and stimulated processes. The control parameter is the relative phase difference between the two incident pulses which determines the interference properties of the fields inside the cavity.

Analysis of second harmonic generation in photonic-crystal-assisted waveguides

We study second harmonic generation in a planar dielectric waveguide having a low-index, polymer core layer, bounded by two multilayer stacks. This geometry allows exceptionally strong confinement of the light at the fundamental wavelength inside the core region with virtually zero net propagation losses for distances that exceed several centimeters, provided material and scattering losses are neglected. A phase-matched configuration of the waveguide is reported in which the pump signal is the lowest-order mode of the waveguide, and the generated second harmonic signal corresponds to the third propagation mode of the waveguide. Using a polymer waveguide core, having chi(2)=100 pm/V, we predict a conversion efficiency of approximately 90% after a propagation distance of 2 mm, using peak pump intensities inside the core of the waveguide of 1.35 GW/cm^2. If the waveguide core contains polymer layers with different glass transition temperatures, the layers can be poled independently to maximize the overlap integral, and similar pump depletions may be achieved over a distance of approximately 500 microns.
