The free compact closure of a symmetric monoidal category

We construct a compact closed category out of any symmetric monoidal category by freely adding adjoints to its objects. The morphisms of the completion are defined as string diagrams annotated by objects and morphisms from the original category. The symmetric monoidal category embeds via a faithful monoidal functor into its completion, but in contrast to the non-symmetric case, this embedding is not full. Our construction factors through the Int construction, which yields another free construction: the free traced monoidal category on a symmetric monoidal category.

Normalization for planar string diagrams and a quadratic equivalence algorithm

In the graphical calculus of planar string diagrams, equality is generated by exchange moves, which swap the heights of adjacent vertices. We show that left- and right-handed exchanges each give strongly normalizing rewrite strategies for connected string diagrams. We use this result to give a linear-time solution to the equivalence problem in the connected case, and a quadratic solution in the general case. We also give a stronger proof of the Joyal-Street coherence theorem, settling Selinger's conjecture on recumbent isotopy.

Sheet diagrams for bimonoidal categories

Bimonoidal categories (also known as rig categories) are categories with two monoidal structures, one of which distributes over the other. We formally define sheet diagrams, a graphical calculus for bimonoidal categories that was informally introduced by Staton. Sheet diagrams are string diagrams drawn on a branching surface, which is itself an extruded string diagram. Our main result is a soundness and completeness theorem of the usual form for graphical calculi: we show that sheet diagrams form the free bimonoidal category on a signature.

OpenTapioca: Lightweight Entity Linking for Wikidata

We propose a simple Named Entity Linking system that can be trained from Wikidata only. This demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of this data source for this task and provides an easily reproducible baseline to compare other systems against. Our model is lightweight to train, to run and to keep synchronous with Wikidata in real time.

A Complete Language for Faceted Dataflow Programs

We present a complete categorical axiomatization of a wide class of dataflow programs. This gives a three-dimensional diagrammatic language for workflows, more expressive than the directed acyclic graphs generally used for this purpose. This calls for an implementation of these representations in data transformation tools.

Autonomization of Monoidal Categories

We show that contrary to common belief in the DisCoCat community, a monoidal category is all that is needed to define a categorical compositional model of natural language. This relies on a construction which freely adds adjoints to a monoidal category. In the case of distributional semantics, this broadens the range of available models, to include non-linear maps and cartesian products for instance. We illustrate the applications of this principle to various distributional models of meaning.

The word problem for double categories

We solve the word problem for free double categories without equations between generators by translating it to the word problem for 2-categories. This yields a quadratic algorithm deciding the equality of diagrams in a free double category. The translation is of interest in its own right since and can for instance be used to reason about double categories with the language of 2-categories, sidestepping the pinwheel problem. It also shows that although double categories are formally more general than 2-categories, they are not actually more expressive, explaining the rarity of applications of this notion.

A survey of OpenRefine reconciliation services

We review the services implementing the OpenRefine reconciliation API, comparing their design to the state of the art in record linkage. Due to the design of the API, the matching scores returned by the services are of little help to guide matching decisions. This suggests possible improvements to the specifications of the API, which could improve user workflows by giving more control over the scoring mechanism to the client.

Complexity of Grammar Induction for Quantum Types

Most categorical models of meaning use a functor from the syntactic category to the semantic category. When semantic information is available, the problem of grammar induction can therefore be defined as finding preimages of the semantic types under this forgetful functor, lifting the information flow from the semantic level to a valid reduction at the syntactic level. We study the complexity of grammar induction, and show that for a variety of type systems, including pivotal and compact closed categories, the grammar induction problem is NP-complete. Our approach could be extended to linguistic type systems such as autonomous or bi-closed categories.
