On metric characterizations of tree and fragmentability indices of Banach spaces

We introduce two ordinal indices that are linear invariants for Banach spaces: the dyadic tree index and the sprawling tree index. We show that they are also bi-Lipschitz invariants. In fact, we characterize their values in terms of sub-Lipschitz embeddability of dyadic or countably branching diamond graphs of ordinal height. We derive applications for separable Banach spaces that are universal for complete countable metric spaces and bi-Lipschitz embeddings. We also discuss the links of these tree indices with classical fragmentability indices of Banach spaces such as the dentabilty, weak fragmentability and Szlenk indices.

Extremal structure and Duality of Lipschitz free spaces

We analyse the relationship between different extremal notions in Lipschitz free spaces (strongly exposed, exposed, preserved extreme and extreme points). We prove in particular that every preserved extreme point of the unit ball is also a denting point. We also show in some particular cases that every extreme point is a molecule, and that a molecule is extreme whenever the two points, say $x$ and $y$, which define it satisfy that the metric segment $[x, y]$ only contains $x$ and $y$. The most notable among them is the case when the free space admits an isometric predual with some additional properties. As an application, we get some new consequences about norm-attainment in spaces of vector valued Lipschitz functions.

Szlenk indices of convex hulls

We study the general measures of non-compactness defined on subsets of a dual Banach space, their associated derivations and their $ω$-iterates. We introduce the notions of convexifiable and sublinear measure of non-compactness and investigate the properties of its associated fragment and slice derivations. We apply our results to the Kuratowski measure of non-compactness and to the study of the Szlenk index of a Banach space. As a consequence, we obtain that the Szlenk index and the convex Szlenk index of a separable Banach space are always equal. We also give, for any countable ordinal $α$, a characterization of the Banach spaces with Szlenk index bounded by $ω^{α+1}$ in terms of the existence of an equivalent renorming. This extends a result by Knaust, Odell and Schlumprecht on Banach spaces with Szlenk index equal to $ω$.
