Pemantle's min-plus binary tree

We consider a stochastic process that describes several particles interacting by either merging or annihilation. When two particles merge, they combine their masses; when annihilation occurs, only the particle of smallest mass survives. Particles start at the bottom of a binary tree of depth N and move towards the root. Assuming that merging or annihilation happens independently at random, we determine the limit law of the final mass of the system in the large N limit.

On concentration properties of disordered Hamiltonians

We present an elementary approach to concentration of disordered Hamiltonians. Assuming differentiability of the limiting free energy $F$ with respect to the inverse temperature $β$, we show that the Hamiltonian concentrates around the energy level $F'(β)$ under the free energy and Gibbs average.

A duality principle in spin glasses

We prove a duality principle that connects the thermodynamic limits of the free energies of the Hamiltonians and their squared interactions. Under the main assumption that the limiting free energy is concave in the squared temperature parameter, we show that this relation is valid in a large class of disordered systems. In particular, when applied to mean field spin glasses, this duality provides an interpretation of the Parisi formula as an inverted variational principle, establishing a prediction of Guerra.

On the energy landscape of spherical spin glasses

We investigate the energy landscape of the spherical mixed even p-spin model near its maximum energy. We relate the distance between pairs of near maxima to the support of the Parisi measure at zero temperature. We then provide an algebraic relation that characterizes one-step replica symmetric breaking Parisi measures. For these measures, we show that any two nonparallel spin configurations around the maximum energy are asymptotically orthogonal to each other. In sharp contrast, we study models with full replica symmetry breaking and show that all possible values of the asymptotic distance are attained near the maximum energy.

50 years of first passage percolation

We celebrate the 50th anniversary of one the most classical models in probability theory. In this survey, we describe the main results of first passage percolation, paying special attention to the recent burst of advances of the past 5 years. The purpose of these notes is twofold. In the first chapters, we give self-contained proofs of seminal results obtained in the '80s and '90s on limit shapes and geodesics, while covering the state of the art of these questions. Second, aside from these classical results, we discuss recent perspectives and directions including (1) the connection between Busemann functions and geodesics, (2) the proof of sublinear variance under 2+log moments of passage times and (3) the role of growth and competition models. We also provide a collection of (old and new) open questions, hoping to solve them before the 100th birthday.

On the time constant of high dimensional first passage percolation

We study the time constant $μ(e_{1})$ in first passage percolation on $\mathbb Z^{d}$ as a function of the dimension. We prove that if the passage times have finite mean, $$\lim_{d \to \infty} \frac{μ(e_{1}) d}{\log d} = \frac{1}{2a},$$ where $a \in [0,\infty]$ is a constant that depends only on the behavior of the distribution of the passage times at $0$. For the same class of distributions, we also prove that the limit shape is not an Euclidean ball, nor a $d$-dimensional cube or diamond, provided that $d$ is large enough.

The Legendre structure of the Parisi formula

We show that the Parisi formula of the mixed $p$-spin model is a concave function of the squared inverse temperature. This allows us to derive a new expression for the Parisi formula that involves the inverse temperature and the Parisi measure as Legendre conjugate variables.

Extreme eigenvalues of sparse, heavy tailed random matrices

We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of $p \times p$ sample covariance matrices $Σ_{p,n} = M_{p,n}M_{p,n}^{*}$ when the entries of the $p \times n$ matrix $M_{p,n}$ are sparse and have a distribution with tail $t^{-α}$, $α>0$. On average the number of nonzero entries of $M_{p,n}$ is of order $n^{μ+1}$, $0 \leq μ\leq 1$. We prove that in the large $n$ limit, the largest eigenvalues are Poissonian if $α<2(1+μ^{-1})$ and converge to a constant in the case $α>2(1+μ^{-1})$. We also extend the results of Benaych-Georges and Peche [7] in the Hermitian case, removing restrictions on the number of nonzero entries of the matrix.

Limiting geodesics for first-passage percolation on subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^2$

It is an open problem to show that in two-dimensional first-passage percolation, the sequence of finite geodesics from any point to $(n,0)$ has a limit in $n$. In this paper, we consider this question for first-passage percolation on a wide class of subgraphs of $\mathbb {Z}^2$: those whose vertex set is infinite and connected with an infinite connected complement. This includes, for instance, slit planes, half-planes and sectors. Writing $x_n$ for the sequence of boundary vertices, we show that the sequence of geodesics from any point to $x_n$ has an almost sure limit assuming only existence of finite geodesics. For all passage-time configurations, we show existence of a limiting Busemann function. Specializing to the case of the half-plane, we prove that the limiting geodesic graph has one topological end; that is, all its infinite geodesics coalesce, and there are no backward infinite paths. To do this, we prove in the Appendix existence of geodesics for all product measures in our domains and remove the moment assumption of the Wehr-Woo theorem on absence of bigeodesics in the half-plane.

Universality of chaos and ultrametricity in mixed p-spin models

We prove disorder universality of chaos phenomena and ultrametricity in the mixed p-spin model under mild moment assumptions on the environment. This establishes the long-standing belief among physicists that the Parisi solution in mean-field models is universal. Our results extend to universal properties of other physical observables in the mixed p-spin model as well as in different spin glass models. These include universality of quenched disorder chaos in the Edwards-Anderson (EA) model and quenched concentration for the magnetization in both EA and mixed p-spin models under non-Gaussian environments. In addition, we show quenched self-averaging for the overlap in the random field Ising model under small perturbation of the external field.

Rate of convergence of the mean for sub-additive ergodic sequences

For sub-additive ergodic processes $\{X_{m,n}\}$ with weak dependence, we analyze the rate of convergence of $\mathbb{E}X_{0,n}/n$ to its limit $g$. We define an exponent $γ$ given roughly by $\mathbb{E}X_{0,n} \sim ng + n^γ$, and, assuming existence of a fluctuation exponent $χ$ that gives $\mathrm{Var}~X_{0,n} \sim n^{2χ}$, we provide a lower bound for $γ$ of the form $γ\geq χ$. The main requirement is that $χ\neq 1/2$. In the case $χ=1/2$ and under the assumption $\mathrm{Var}~X_{0,n} = O(n/(\log n)^β)$ for some $β>0$, we prove $γ\geq χ- c(β)$ for a $β$-dependent constant $c(β)$. These results show in particular that non-diffusive fluctuations are associated to non-trivial $γ$. Various models, including first-passage percolation, directed polymers, the minimum of a branching random walk and bin packing, fall into our general framework, and the results apply assuming $χ$ exists. In the case of first-passage percolation in $\mathbb Z^d$, we provide a version of $γ\geq -1/2$ without assuming existence of $χ$.

The Parisi formula has a unique minimizer

In 1979, G. Parisi predicted a variational formula for the thermodynamic limit of the free energy in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and described the role played by its minimizer. This formula was verified in the seminal work of Talagrand and later generalized to the mixed p-spin models by Panchenko. In this paper, we prove that the minimizer in Parisi's formula is unique at any temperature and external field by establishing the strict convexity of the Parisi functional.

Free energy and complexity of spherical bipartite models

We investigate both free energy and complexity of the spherical bipartite spin glass model. We first prove a variational formula in high temperature for the limiting free energy based on the well-known Crisanti-Sommers representation of the mixed p-spin spherical model. Next, we show that the mean number of local minima at low levels of energy is exponentially large in the size of the system and we derive a bound on the location of the ground state energy.

A simplified proof of the relation between scaling exponents in first-passage percolation

In a recent breakthrough work, Chatterjee [Ann. of Math. (2) 177 (2013) 663-697] proved a long standing conjecture that relates the transversal exponent $ξ$ and the fluctuation exponent $χ$ in first-passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The purpose of this paper is to replace the main argument of Chatterjee (2013) and give an alternative proof of this relation. Specifically, we show that under the assumption that exponents defined in Chatterjee (2013) exist, one has the relation $χ\leq2ξ-1$. One advantage of our argument is that it does not require the "nearly Gamma" assumption of Chatterjee (2013).

Complexity of random smooth functions on the high-dimensional sphere

We analyze the landscape of general smooth Gaussian functions on the sphere in dimension $N$, when $N$ is large. We give an explicit formula for the asymptotic complexity of the mean number of critical points of finite and diverging index at any level of energy and for the mean Euler characteristic of level sets. We then find two possible scenarios for the bottom landscape, one that has a layered structure of critical values and a strong correlation between indexes and critical values and another where even at levels below the limiting ground state energy the mean number of local minima is exponentially large. We end the paper by discussing how these results can be interpreted in the language of spin glasses models.

On properties of Parisi measures

We investigate the structure of Parisi measures, the functional order parameters of mixed p-spin models in mean field spin glasses. In the absence of external field, we prove that a Parisi measure satisfies the following properties. First, at all temperatures, the support of any Parisi measure contains the origin. If it contains an open interval, then the measure has a smooth density on this interval. Next, we give a criterion on temperature parameters for which a Parisi measure is neither Replica Symmetric nor One Replica Symmetry Breaking. Finally, we show that in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, slightly above the critical temperature, the largest number in the support of a Parisi measure is a jump discontinuity. An analogue of these results is discussed in the spherical mixed p-spin models. As a tool to establish these facts and of independent interest, we study functionals of the associated Parisi PDEs and derive regularity properties of their solutions.

The scaling relation chi = 2 xi - 1 for directed polymers in a random environment

We prove the scaling relation chi = 2 xi - 1 between the transversal exponent xi and the fluctuation exponent chi for directed polymers in a random environment in d dimensions. The definition of these exponents is similar to that proposed by S. Chatterjee in first-passage percolation. The proof presented here also establishes the relation in the zero temperature version of the model, known as last-passage percolation.
