Finite groups whose proper subgroups of order divisible by $p$ are supersolvable

Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $G$ be a finite group whose order is divisible by $p$. Suppose that every proper subgroup of $G$ whose order is divisible by $p$ is supersolvable, while $G$ itself is not. In this paper, we investigate the arithmetic and structural properties of such groups, addressing both the solvable and nonsolvable cases.

Finite groups with simple or $p$-nilpotent maximal subgroups

Let $p$ be a prime number. When $p$ is odd, we study finite groups in which every maximal subgroup is either non-abelian simple or $p$-nilpotent, as well as those in which every maximal subgroup is either non-abelian simple or $p$-decomposable. We prove that every non-simple, non-solvable group satisfying the first condition is $p$-nilpotent, and every non-simple, non-solvable group satisfying the second condition is $p$-decomposable. In addition, we determine the possible occurrence of non-abelian simple maximal subgroups in these cases. These results provide a substantial partial answer to two questions posed by V.S. Monakhov and I.N. Tyutyanov in the Kourovka Notebook concerning the non-abelian composition factors of such groups. For non-abelian simple groups, we determine those satisfying the corresponding conditions within the alternating and sporadic families. The case of simple groups of Lie type is left open. Finally, for $p=2$, we obtain a complete classification of the non-solvable finite groups whose maximal subgroups are either non-abelian simple or $2$-nilpotent.

Cosets of normal subgroups and union of two conjugacy classes

Let $G$ be a finite group, $N$ a normal subgroup of $G$ and $x\in G-N$. We discuss when the coset $Nx$ is contained in the union of two conjugacy classes, $K$ and $D$, of $G$. We show that $N$ need not be solvable, and can even be non-abelian simple, but in these cases, $K$ and $D$ must have the same cardinality, and the non-solvable structure of $N$ is restricted. The non-abelian principal factors of $G$ contained in $N$ are then isomorphic to $S\times \cdots\times S$, where $S$ is a simple group of Lie type of odd characteristic.

Supersolvable subgroups of order divisible by 3

We determine the structure of the finite non-solvable groups of order divisible by $3$ all whose maximal subgroups of order divisible by $3$ are supersolvable. Precisely, we demonstrate that if $G$ is a finite non-solvable group satisfying the above condition on maximal subgroups, then either $G$ is a $3'$-group or $G/{\bf O}_{3'}(G)$ is isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2(2^p)$ for an odd prime $p$, where ${\bf O}_{3'}(G)$ denotes the largest normal $3'$-subgroup of $G$. Furthermore, in the latter case, ${\bf O}_{3'}(G)$ is nilpotent and ${\bf O}_2(G)\leq {\bf Z}(G)$.

Indices of non-supersolvable maximal subgroups in finite groups

Two classic results, due to K. Doerk and P. Hall respectively, establish the solvability of those finite groups all of whose maximal subgroups are supersolvable, and the solvability of finite groups in which all maximal subgroups have prime or squared prime index. In this note we describe the structure of the non-solvable finite groups whose maximal subgroups are either supersolvable or have prime or squared prime index.

Extensions of a theorem of P. Hall on indexes of maximal subgroups

We extend a classical theorem of P. Hall that claims that if the index of every maximal subgroup of a finite group $G$ is a prime or the square of a prime, then $G$ is solvable. Precisely, we prove that if one allows, in addition, the possibility that every maximal subgroup of $G$ is nilpotent instead of having prime or squared-prime index, then $G$ continues to be solvable. Likewise, we obtain the solvability of $G$ when we assume that every proper non-maximal subgroup of $G$ lies in some subgroup of index prime or squared prime.

An Arad and Fisman's theorem on products of conjugacy classes revisited

A theorem of Z. Arad and E. Fisman establishes that if $A$ and $B$ are two conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that either $AB=A\cup B$ or $AB=A^{-1} \cup B$, then $G$ cannot be non-abelian simple. We demonstrate that, in fact, $\langle A\rangle = \langle B\rangle$ is solvable, the elements of $A$ and $B$ are $p$-elements for some prime $p$, and $\langle A\rangle $ is $p$-nilpotent. Moreover, under the second assumption, it turns out that $A=B$ and this is the only possible case. This research is done by appealing to recently developed techniques and results that are based on the Classification of Finite Simple Groups.

p-Nilpotent maximal subgroups in finite groups

Let $p$ be a prime number and suppose that every maximal subgroup of a finite group is either $p$-nilpotent or has prime index. Such group need not be $p$-solvable, and we study its structure by proving that only one nonabelian simple group of order divisible by $p$, which belongs to the family ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$, can be involved in it. For $p=2$, we specify more, and in fact, such simple group must be isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2({r^a})$ for certain values of the prime $r$ and the parameter $a$.

Graphs associated to conjugacy classes of normal subgroups in finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$. We attach to $N$ two graphs $Γ_G(N)$ and $Γ^{\ast}_G(N)$ related to the conjugacy classes of $G$ contained in $N$ and to the set of primes dividing the sizes of these classes, respectively. These graphs are subgraphs of the ordinary ones associated to the conjugacy classes ofG, $Γ(G)$ and $Γ^{\ast}(G)$, which have been widely studied by several authors. We prove that the number of connected components of both graphs is at most 2, we determine the best upper bounds for the diameters and characterize the structure of $N$ when these graphs are disconnected.

Triangles in the graph of conjugacy classes of normal subgroups

Let $G$ be a finite group and $N$ a normal subgroup of $G$. We determine the structure of $N$ when the graph $Γ_G(N)$, which is the graph associated to the conjugacy classes of $G$ contained in $N$, has no triangles and when the graph consists in exactly one triangle.

Squares of real conjugacy classes in finite groups

We prove that if a finite group $G$ contains a conjugacy class $K$ whose square is of the form $1 \cup D$, where $D$ is a conjugacy class of $G$, then $\langle K \rangle$ is a solvable proper normal subgroup of $G$ and we completely determine its structure. We also obtain the structure of those groups in which the assumption above is true for all non-central conjugacy classes and when every conjugacy class satisfies that its square is the union of all central conjugacy classes except at most one.

Multiplying a conjugacy class by its inverse in a finite group

Suppose that $G$ is a finite group and $K$ a non-trivial conjugacy class of $G$ such that $KK^{-1}=1\cup D\cup D^{-1}$ with $D$ a conjugacy class of $G$. We prove that $G$ is not a non-abelian simple group. We also give arithmetical conditions on the class sizes determining the structure of $\langle K\rangle$ and $\langle D\rangle$. Furthermore, if $D=K$ is a non-real class, then $\langle K\rangle$ is $p$-elementary abelian for some odd prime $p$.

Powers of conjugacy classes in a finite group

Many results have been established that show how the number of conjugacy classes appearing in the product of classes affect the structure of a finite group. The aim of this paper is to show several results about solvability concerning the case in which the power of a conjugacy class is a union of one or two conjugacy classes. Moreover, we show that the above conditions can be determined through the character table of the group.

Landau's Theorem on conjugacy classes for normal subgroups

Landau's theorem on conjugacy classes asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups, up to isomorphism, with exactly $k$ conjugacy classes for any positive integer $k$. We show that, for any positive integers $n$ and $s$, there exists only a finite number of finite groups $G$, up to isomorphism, having a normal subgroup $N$ of index $n$ which contains exactly $s$ non-central $G$-conjugacy classes. We provide upper bounds for the orders of $G$ and $N$, which are used by using GAP to classify all finite groups with normal subgroups having a small index and few $G$-classes. We also study the corresponding problems when we only take into account the set of $G$-classes of prime-power order elements contained in a normal subgroup.

Some problems about products of conjugacy classes in finite groups

We summarize several results about non-simplicity, solvability and normal structure of finite groups related to the number of conjugacy classes appearing in the product or the power of conjugacy classes. We also collect some problems that have only been partially solved.

A criterion for a normal subgroup to be hypercentral based on class sizes

Let $G$ be a finite group and $N$ a normal subgroup of $G$. We prove that the knowledge of the sizes of the conjugacy classes of $G$ that are contained in $N$ and of their multiplicities provides information of $N$ in relation to the structure of $G$. Among other results, we obtain a criterion to determine whether a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $N$ lies in the hypercentre of $G$ for a fixed prime $p$, and therefore, whether the whole subgroup $N$ is hypercentral in $G$.
