Integral representation for fractional Laplace-Beltrami operators

In this paper we provide an integral representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator for general riemannian manifolds which has several interesting applications. We give two different proofs, in two different scenarios, of essentially the same result. One of them deals with compact manifolds with or without boundary, while the other approach treats the case of riemannian manifolds without boundary whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below.

Continuity of weak solutions of the critical quasigeostrophic equation on the sphere

In this paper we provide regularity results for active scalars that are weak solutions of almost critical drift-diffusion equations in general surfaces. This includes models of anisotropic non-homogeneous media and the physically motivated case of the two-dimensional sphere. Our finest result deals with the critical surface quasigeostrophic equation on the round sphere.

Global well-posedness of critical surface quasigeostrophic equation on the sphere

In this paper we prove global well-posedness of the critical surface quasigeostrophic equation on the two dimensional sphere building on some earlier work of the authors. The proof relies on an improving of the previously known pointwise inequality for fractional laplacians as in the work of Constantin and Vicol for the euclidean setting.

A pointwise inequality for fractional laplacians

The fractional laplacian is an operator appearing in several evolution models where diffusion coming from a Lévy process is present but also in the analysis of fluid interphases. We provide an extension of a pointwise inequality that plays a rôle in their study. We begin recalling two scenarios where it has been used. After stating the results, for fractional Laplace-Beltrami and Dirichlet-Neumann operators, we provide an sketch of their proofs, unravelling the underlying principle to such inequalities.

Porous media: the Muskat problem in 3D

The Muskat problem involves filtration of two incompressible fluids throughout a porous medium. In this paper we shall discuss in 3-D the relevance of the Rayleigh-Taylor condition, and the topology of the initial interface, in order to prove its local existence in Sobolev spaces.

Interface evolution: water waves in 2-D

We study the free boundary evolution between two irrotational, incompressible and inviscid fluids in 2-D without surface tension. We prove local-existence in Sobolev spaces when, initially, the difference of the gradients of the pressure in the normal direction has the proper sign, an assumption which is also known as the Rayleigh-Taylor condition. The well-posedness of the full water wave problem was first obtained by Wu \cite{Wu}. The methods introduced in this paper allows us to consider multiple cases: with or without gravity, but also a closed boundary or a periodic boundary with the fluids placed above and below it. It is assumed that the initial interface does not touch itself, being a part of the evolution problem to check that such property prevails for a short time, as well as it does the Rayleigh-Taylor condition, depending conveniently upon the initial data. The addition of the pressure equality to the contour dynamic equations is obtained as a mathematical consequence, and not as a physical assumption, from the mere fact that we are dealing with weak solutions of Euler's equation in the whole space.

Interface evolution: the Hele-Shaw and Muskat problems

We study the dynamics of the interface between two incompressible 2-D flows where the evolution equation is obtained from Darcy's law. The free boundary is given by the discontinuity among the densities and viscosities of the fluids. This physical scenario is known as the two dimensional Muskat problem or the two-phase Hele-Shaw flow. We prove local-existence in Sobolev spaces when, initially, the difference of the gradients of the pressure in the normal direction has the proper sign, an assumption which is also known as the Rayleigh-Taylor condition.
