Exact non-Markovian master equations: a generalized derivation for Gaussian systems

We derive an exact master equation that captures the dynamics of a quadratic quantum system linearly coupled to a Gaussian environment of the same statistics: the Gaussian Master Equation (GME). Unlike previous approaches, our formulation applies universally to both bosonic and fermionic setups, and remains valid even in the presence of initial system-environment correlations, allowing for the exact computation of the system's reduced density matrix across all parameter regimes. Remarkably, the GME shares the same operatorial structure as the Redfield equation and depends on a single kernel - a dressed environment correlation function accounting for all virtual interactions between the system and the environment. This simple structure grants a clear physical interpretation and makes the GME easy to simulate numerically, as we show by applying it to an open system based on two fermions coupled via superconductive pairing.

Unifying quantum stochastic methods using Wick's theorem on the Keldysh contour

We present a method, based on the Keldysh formalism, for deriving stochastic master equations that describe the non-Markovian dynamics of a quantum system coupled to a Gaussian environment. This approach yields a compact expression for the system's propagator, which we show to be equivalent to existing formulations, such as the stochastic von Neumann equation (SVNE). A key advantage of our method is its generality: It can be extended to describe any open-system evolution defined on a suitable ordering contour. As a result, we adapt it to derive generalized versions of the SVNE that account for initial system-environment correlations, as well as stochastic equations that incorporate information about the statistics of energy flows in the environment. The insights offered by our technique further allow us to examine the nature of the noise processes appearing in the SVNE. We prove that its solution can be expressed in terms of a single physical noise, without any loss of information. Finally, we propose a semiclassical scenario in which this noise can be interpreted as arising from an initial measurement process on the environment.

Steady-state entanglement scaling in open quantum systems: A comparison between several master equations

We investigate the scaling of the fermionic logarithmic negativity (FLN) between complementary intervals in the steady state of a driven-dissipative tight-binding critical chain, coupled to two thermal reservoirs at its edges. We compare the predictions of three different master equations, namely a nonlocal Lindblad equation, the Redfield equation, and the recently proposed universal Lindblad equation (ULE). Within the nonlocal Lindblad equation approach, the FLN grows logarithmically with the subsystem size $\ell$, for any value of the system-bath coupling and of the bath parameters. This is consistent with the logarithmic scaling of the mutual information analytically demonstrated in [Phys. Rev. B 106, 235149 (2022)]. In the ultraweak-coupling regime, the Redfield equation and the ULE exhibit the same logarithmic increase; such behavior holds even when moving to moderately weak coupling and intermediate values of $\ell$. However, when venturing beyond this regime, the FLN crosses over to superlogarithmic scaling for both equations.

Recovering complete positivity of non-Markovian quantum dynamics with Choi-proximity regularization

A relevant problem in the theory of open quantum systems is the lack of complete positivity of dynamical maps obtained after weak-coupling approximations, a famous example being the Redfield master equation. A number of approaches exist to recover well-defined evolutions under additional Markovian assumptions, but much less is known beyond this regime. Here we propose a numerical method to cure the complete-positivity violation issue while preserving the non-Markovian features of an arbitrary original dynamical map. The idea is to replace its unphysical Choi operator with its closest physical one, mimicking recent work on quantum process tomography. We also show that the regularized dynamics is more accurate in terms of reproducing the exact dynamics: this allows to heuristically push the utilization of these master equations in moderate coupling regimes, where the loss of positivity can have relevant impact.

A time-dependent regularization of the Redfield equation

We introduce a new regularization of the Redfield equation based on a replacement of the Kossakowski matrix with its closest positive semidefinite neighbor. Unlike most of the existing approaches, this procedure is capable of retaining the time dependence of the Kossakowski matrix, leading to a completely positive divisible quantum process. Using the dynamics of an exactly-solvable three-level open system as a reference, we show that our approach performs better during the transient evolution, if compared to other approaches like the partial secular master equation or the universal Lindblad equation. To make the comparison between different regularization schemes independent from the initial states, we introduce a new quantitative approach based on the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism.

Logarithmic entanglement scaling in dissipative free-fermion systems

We study the quantum information spreading in one-dimensional free-fermion systems in the presence of localized thermal baths. We employ a nonlocal Lindblad master equation to describe the system-bath interaction, in the sense that the Lindblad operators are written in terms of the Bogoliubov operators of the closed system, and hence are nonlocal in space. The statistical ensemble describing the steady state is written in terms of a convex combination of the Fermi-Dirac distributions of the baths. Due to the singularity of the free-fermion dispersion, the steady-state mutual information exhibits singularities as a function of the system parameters. While the mutual information generically satisfies an area law, at the singular points it exhibits logarithmic scaling as a function of subsystem size. By employing the Fisher-Hartwig theorem, we derive the prefactor of the logarithmic scaling, which depends on the parameters of the baths and plays the role of an effective "central charge". This is upper bounded by the central charge governing ground-state entanglement scaling. We provide numerical checks of our results in the paradigmatic tight-binding chain and the Kitaev chain.

Topological signatures in a weakly dissipative Kitaev chain of finite length

We construct a global Lindblad master equation for a Kitaev quantum wire of finite length, weakly coupled to an arbitrary number of thermal baths, within the Born-Markov and secular approximations. We find that the coupling of an external bath to more than one lattice site generates quantum interference effects, arising from the possibility of fermions to tunnel through multiple paths. In the presence of two baths at different temperatures and/or chemical potentials, the steady-state particle current can be expressed through the Landauer-Büttiker formula, as in a ballistic transport setup, with the addition of an anomaly factor associated with the presence of the $p$-wave pairing in the Kitaev Hamiltonian. Such a factor is affected by the ground-state properties of the chain, being related to the finite-size equivalent of its Pfaffian topological invariant.

Self-consistent microscopic derivation of Markovian master equations for open quadratic quantum systems

We provide a rigorous construction of Markovian master equations for a wide class of quantum systems that encompass quadratic models of finite size, linearly coupled to an environment modeled by a set of independent thermal baths. Our theory can be applied for both fermionic and bosonic models in any number of physical dimensions, and does not require any particular spatial symmetry of the global system. We show that, for non-degenerate systems under a full secular approximation, the effective Lindblad operators are the normal modes of the system, with coupling constants that explicitly depend on the transformation matrices that diagonalize the Hamiltonian. Both the dynamics and the steady-state (guaranteed to be unique) properties can be obtained with a polynomial amount of resources in the system size. We also address the particle and energy current flowing through the system in a minimal two-bath scheme and find that they hold the structure of Landauer's formula, being thermodynamically consistent.
