Beyond gauge-parameter dependence: Further evidence for asymptotic safety in Scalar-Tensor theories

Asymptotic Safety provides a promising framework for the quantization of Scalar-Tensor theories as non-perturbatively renormalizable quantum field theories. Over the past years, growing evidence has accumulated for the existence of non-trivial renormalization group fixed points in a variety of Scalar-Tensor models. In this work, we investigate the robustness of these fixed points under significant modifications of the computational setup. In particular, we employ a gauge condition that explicitly depends on the dynamical scalar field, going beyond a mere gauge-parameter deformation of the standard linear covariant gauges commonly used in the literature. Exploring different field parameterizations, we identify fixed points belonging to the Gaussian Matter class in four spacetime dimensions that are consistent with previous studies. The real part of the critical exponents associated with the scalar-field mass and the non-minimal scalar-curvature coupling turn out to have very small absolute value. We provide a comprehensive exploration of how the anomalous dimension of the scalar field and field parameterization impact those critical exponents showing that fixed-point candidates with two or four relevant directions emerge.

Towards Perturbative Unimodular Poincaré Gauge Theories with Propagating Torsion

We study the one-loop relation between an effective-field-theory extension of Poincaré gauge theories of gravity with propagating torsion and its unimodular counterpart. In the Einstein representation, we consider two representative quadratic torsion subsectors, namely totally antisymmetric (axial) torsion and the vector component of hook-antisymmetric torsion. On maximally symmetric metric backgrounds with vanishing background torsion, the diffeomorphism-invariant and genuine unimodular theories yield identical one-loop determinants in both sectors, reproducing the same local logarithmic divergences. We further examine flat backgrounds with homogeneous axial or vector torsion, where metric-torsion mixing is present. In each case, the torsion-dependent one-loop effective action in unimodular gauge and in the genuine unimodular formulation is controlled by the same physical determinant. Thus, for the actions and backgrounds considered, the unimodular constraint does not modify local one-loop torsion dynamics. We also delineate the limitations of this equivalence and the extensions needed for generic torsionful curved backgrounds.

Charting the different phases of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons-Higgs theories

We explore Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a Higgs-like field in the fundamental representation of $SU(2)$ quantized in linear covariant gauges in three Euclidean dimensions. We analyze the modifications in the analytic structure of the gluon propagator due to the elimination of infinitesimal Gribov copies. The interplay between the Higgs, the Chern-Simons and Gribov mass parameters is investigated. Two different phases are identified: a confining one, where all poles are complex, and a deconfined one, where would-be physical gluon excitation can appear. Unlike previous works, the Gribov parameter is consistently fixed by its gap equation as a function of the other mass parameters and the gauge coupling. This imposes a constraint in the parameter space and makes transparent how the competition of the mass parameters affects the relevance of the Gribov parameter for the characterization of the spectrum of the theory.

Quark Propagator at one-loop in the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework

The Refined Gribov-Zwanziger scenario is a local and renormalizable setup in which infinitesimal Gribov copies are eliminated and further non-perturbative effects are accounted for. The gluon propagator that arises from this framework fits lattice data very well in the Landau gauge. We investigate the coupling of quarks to this setting at one-loop order by computing the quark propagator. The fermionic sector is introduced by a minimal coupling and the non-perturbative effects are transmitted to the matter sector through gluonic loops which, in this case, carry information from the elimination of infinitesimal Gribov copies and the formation of condensates. We compare our findings with available lattice data both for the unquenched gluon propagator as well as for the quark propagator in the Landau gauge. Our results are comparable with those obtained in the Curci-Ferrari model at one-loop order. In particular, we are able to fit the unquenched gluon propagator and use the fixed parameters to predict the quark mass function and find good agreement with lattice data. However, the quark dressing function does not agree, even at a qualitative level, with lattice data in the infrared. This is agreement with the analogue computation in Curci-Ferrari model. Inspired by the developments in the Curci-Ferrari results, such a disagreement is likely to be cured by the inclusion of two-loops corrections. Finally, we compare the present minimal coupling with a non-perturbative matter coupling proposed in the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger literature.

Neutrino mass generation in asymptotically safe gravity

There exist several distinct phenomenological models to generate neutrino masses. We explore, which of these models can consistently be embedded in a quantum theory of gravity and matter. We proceed by invoking a minimal number of degrees of freedom beyond the Standard Model. Thus, we first investigate whether the Weinberg operator, a dimension-five-operator that generates neutrino masses without requiring degrees of freedom beyond the Standard Model, can arise in asymptotically safe quantum gravity. We find a negative answer with far-reaching consequences: new degrees of freedom beyond gravity and the Standard Model are necessary to give neutrinos a mass in the asymptotic-safety paradigm. Second, we explore whether the type-I Seesaw mechanism is viable and discover an upper bound on the Seesaw scale. The bound depends on the mass of the visible neutrino. We find a numerical value of $10^{14}\, \rm GeV$ for this bound when neglecting neutrino mixing for a visible mass of $10^{-10}\, \rm GeV$. Conversely, for the most ``natural" value of the Seesaw scale in a quantum-gravity setting, which is the Planck scale, we predict an upper bound for the neutrino mass of the visible neutrino of approximately $10^{-15}\, \rm GeV$. Third, we explore whether neutrinos could also be Pseudo-Dirac-neutrinos in asymptotic safety and find that this possibility can be accommodated.

Finiteness of the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons action in linear covariant gauges by taking into account gauge copies

In recent years, the effects of removing infinitesimal Gribov copies from the path integral of gauge-fixed Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories formulated in three-dimensional Euclidean space have been investigated. Part of the interest resides on the fact that such an elimination of gauge copies introduces a mass parameter, the Gribov parameter, which is relevant when the assumptions of the Faddeev-Popov procedure are not well-grounded. Such a parameter enters the propagator of the gauge field which is topologically massive due to the Chern-Simons term. The resulting action, which eliminates infinitesimal Gribov copies in this context, has been constructed in linear covariant gauges and the interplay between the aforementioned mass-parameters allows for a rich phase diagram in which confining and deconfining signatures are observed in the gauge-field propagator. In the present work, we establish the renormalization properties of such a theory at all orders in perturbation theory by means of the algebraic renormalization framework and show that the removal of infinitesimal Gribov copies does not affect the standard non-renormalization properties of standard gauge-fixed Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories, i.e., the theory is finite.

On the consistency of Lorentz-Violating Yang-Mills theories: Gauge invariance and non-perturbative effects

Previous investigations on the renormalizability properties of Lorentz-violating Yang-Mills (LVYM) theories in the Landau gauge have pointed out the necessity of the inclusion of a mass-like term for the gauge fields. If one aims at generalizing the theory to a more complicated gauge, such a mass-like term can bring severe issues regarding gauge-dependence of correlation functions of observables. We propose a Lorentz-violating Yang-Mills theory supplemented by a gauge-invariant mass term which generalizes the model in the Landau gauge. We discuss the foundational aspects of the model and highlight how it simplifies in the Landau gauge. Following the recent literature in pure Yang-Mills theories, we remark how the proposed massive extension of LVYM theories can be used as an effective model to access infrared properties within perturbation theory. Finally, we present a BRST-invariant formulation of the so-called Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action in the presence of Lorentz-violating terms in linear covariant gauges and the underlying tree-level gauge-field propagator which is enriched by the non-perturbative information carried by the elimination of Gribov copies.

Infrared gluon propagator in the Refined Gribov-Zwanziger scenario at one-loop order in the Landau gauge

The Refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) action in the Landau gauge provides a local and renormalizable framework to account for the existence of infinitesimal Gribov copies in the path integral together with other relevant infrared effects such as the formation of condensates. The properties of the tree-level gluon propagator obtained in this setup has been thoroughly investigated over the past decade. It accommodates important properties seen in lattice simulations such as a finite value at vanishing momentum and positivity violation. Yet a comprehensive study about the stability of such properties against quantum corrections was lacking. In this work, we compute the gluon propagator in the RGZ scenario at one-loop order and implement an appropriate renormalization scheme in order to compare our findings with lattice data. Remarkably, the qualitative properties of the tree-level gluon propagator are preserved. In particular, the fits with lattice data show evidence for positivity violation and the existence of complex poles for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge groups. We comment on the results for the ghost propagator as well.

Dually weighted multi-matrix models as a path to causal gravity-matter systems

We introduce a dually-weighted multi-matrix model that for a suitable choice of weights reproduce two-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) coupled to the Ising model. When Ising degrees of freedom are removed, this model corresponds to the CDT-matrix model introduced by Benedetti and Henson [Phys. Lett. B 678, 222 (2009)]. We present exact as well as approximate results for the Gaussian averages of characters of a Hermitian matrix $A$ and $A^2$ for a given representation and establish the present limitations that prevent us to solve the model analytically. This sets the stage for the formulation of more sophisticated matter models coupled to two-dimensional CDT as dually weighted multi-matrix models providing a complementary view to the standard simplicial formulation of CDT-matter models.

Refined Gribov-Zwanziger theory coupled to scalar fields in the Landau gauge

The Refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) action in the Landau gauge accounts for the existence of infinitesimal Gribov copies as well as the dynamical formation of condensates in the infrared of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories. We couple scalar fields to the RGZ action and compute the one-loop scalar propagator in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. We compare our findings with existing lattice data. The fate of BRST symmetry in this model is discussed, and we provide a comparison to a previous proposal for a non-minimal coupling between matter and the RGZ action. We find good agreement with the lattice data of the scalar propagator for the values of the mass parameters that fit the RGZ gluon propagator to the lattice. This suggests that the non-perturbative information carried by the gluon propagator in the RGZ framework provides a suitable mechanism to reproduce the behavior of correlation functions of colored matter fields in the infrared.

Fate of chiral symmetry in Riemann-Cartan geometry

We study the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking for fermionic systems in a gravitational background with curvature and torsion. The analysis is based on a scale-dependent effective potential derived from a bosonized version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasino model in a Riemann-Cartan background. We have investigated the fate of chiral symmetry in two different regimes. First, to gain some intuition on the combined effect of curvature and torsion, we investigate the regime of weak curvature and torsion. However, this regime does not access the deep infrared limit, which is essential to answer questions related to the mechanism of gravitational catalysis in fermionic systems. Second, we look at the regime of vanishing curvature and homogeneous torsion. In this case, although we cannot probe the combined effects of curvature and torsion, we can access the deep infrared contributions of the background torsion to the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking. Our main finding is that, in the scenario where only torsion is present, there is no indication of a mechanism of gravitational catalysis.

Frontiers of Quantum Gravity: shared challenges, converging directions

Understanding the quantum nature of spacetime and gravity remains one of the most ambitious goals of theoretical physics. It promises to provide key new insights into fundamental particle theory, astrophysics, cosmology and the foundations of physics. Despite this common goal, the community of quantum gravity researchers is sometimes seen as divided into sub-communities working on different, mutually exclusive approaches. In practice however, recent years have shown the emergence of common techniques, results and physical ideas arising from different sub-communities, suggesting exciting new prospects for collaboration and interaction between traditionally distinct approaches. In this White Paper we discuss some of the common themes which have seen a growing interest from various directions, and argue that focusing on them will help the quantum gravity community as a whole towards shared objectives.

Evidence for a novel shift-symmetric universality class from the functional renormalization group

Wetterich's equation provides a powerful tool for investigating the existence and universal properties of renormalization group fixed points exhibiting quantum scale invariance. Motivated by recent works on asymptotically safe scalar-tensor theories, we develop a novel approximation scheme which projects the functional renormalization group equation onto functions of the kinetic term. Applying this projection to scalars and gauge fields, our analysis identifies a new universality class with a very special spectrum of stability coefficients. The implications of our findings in the context of asymptotically safe gravity-matter systems are discussed.

Towards background field independence within the Gribov horizon

We introduce a background gauge akin to the Landau-DeWitt gauge but deformed by the presence of a gauge parameter for the quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories. In the limit where the background field vanishes, standard linear covariant gauges are recovered. This gauge allows for an explicit investigation of the effects of infinitesimal Gribov copies and their impact to background and gauge parameter dependence of physical correlators. Similarly to linear covariant gauges, the introduction of gauge-invariant dressed fields is essential to restore BRST symmetry. Hence, we construct a BRST symmetric action in linear covariant background gauges which eliminates regular infinitesimal Gribov copies in analogy to the recently introduced BRST invariant (refined) Gribov-Zwanziger action. The issue of background dependence and its relation to gauge parameter dependence is discussed in the light of non-perturbative effects driven by the elimination of Gribov copies.

Scalar-Tensor theories within Asymptotic Safety

Asymptotic Safety provides an elegant mechanism for obtaining a consistent high-energy completion of gravity and gravity-matter systems. Following the initial idea by Steven Weinberg, the construction builds on an interacting fixed point of the theories renormalization group (RG) flow. In this work we use the Wetterich equation for the effective average action to investigate the RG flow of gravity supplemented by a real scalar field. We give a non-perturbative proof that the subspace of interactions respecting the global shift-symmetry of the scalar kinetic term is closed under RG transformations. Subsequently, we compute the beta functions in an approximation comprising the EinsteinHilbert action supplemented by the shift-symmetric quartic scalar self-interaction and the two lowest order shift-symmetric interactions coupling scalar-bilinears to the spacetime curvature. The computation utilizes the background field method with an arbitrary background, demonstrating that the results are manifestly background independent. Our beta functions exhibit an interacting fixed point suitable for Asymptotic Safety, where all matter interactions are non-vanishing. The presence of this fixed point is rooted in the interplay of the matter couplings which our work tracks for the first time. The relation of our findings with previous results in the literature is discussed in detail and we conclude with a brief outlook on potential phenomenological applications.

Infrared propagators of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories in linear covariant gauges

Recent works have explored non-perturbative effects due to the existence of (infinitesimal) Gribov copies in Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories in three Euclidean dimensions. In particular, the removal of such copies modify the gauge field propagator by a self-consistent dynamically generated mass parameter, the Gribov parameter. Due to the interplay with the topological mass introduced by the Chern-Simons term, the propagator features a non-trivial set of phases with poles of different nature, leading to the possible interpretation of a confinfing to deconfining phase transition. Inhere, we restore the BRST symmetry which is softly broken by the elimination of gauge copies and provide a BRST-invariant discussion of such a transition. In order to make clear all physical statements, we deal with linear covariant gauges which contain a gauge parameter and therefore allow for an explicit check of gauge parameter independence of physical results. We also discuss the generation of condensates due to the infrared relevance of infinitesimal Gribov copies.

Can quantum fluctuations differentiate between standard and unimodular gravity?

We formally prove the existence of a quantization procedure that makes the path integral of a general diffeomorphism-invariant theory of gravity, with fixed total spacetime volume, equivalent to that of its unimodular version. This is achieved by means of a partial gauge fixing of diffeomorphisms together with a careful definition of the unimodular measure. The statement holds also in the presence of matter. As an explicit example, we consider scalar-tensor theories and compute the corresponding logarithmic divergences in both settings. In spite of significant differences in the coupling of the scalar field to gravity, the results are equivalent for all couplings, including non-minimal ones.
