A theory of type-II minimally modified gravity

We propose a modified gravity theory that propagates only two local gravitational degrees of freedom and that does not have an Einstein frame. According to the classification in JCAP 01 (2019) 017 [arXiv:1810.01047 [gr-qc]], this is a type-II minimally modified gravity theory. The theory is characterized by the gravitational constant $G_{\rm N}$ and a function $V(ϕ)$ of a non-dynamical auxiliary field $ϕ$ that plays the role of dark energy. Once one fixes a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background, the form of $V(ϕ)$ is determined and the theory no longer possesses a free parameter or a free function, besides $G_{\rm N}$. For $V'(ϕ) = 0$ the theory reduces to general relativity (GR) with $G_N$ being the Newton's constant and $V=const.$ being the cosmological constant. For $V'(ϕ) \ne 0$, it is shown that gravity behaves differently from GR but that GR with $G_{\rm N}$ being the Newton's constant is recovered for weak gravity at distance and time scales sufficiently shorter than the scale associated with $V(ϕ)$. Therefore this theory provides the simplest framework of cosmology in which deviations from GR can be tested by observational data.

Reducing the $H_{0}$ tension with generalized Proca theory

We investigate the cosmological viability of the generalized proca theory. We first implement the background and linear perturbation equations of motion in the Boltzmann code and then study the constraints on the parameters of the generalized proca theory after running MCMC against the cosmological data set. With Planck + HST data, we obtain the constraint $h=0.7334_{-0.0269}^{+0.0246}$, which indicates that the tension between early universe and late time universe within this theory is removed. By adding other late-time data sets (BAO, RSD, etc.) we show that the tension is reduced, as the 2$σ$ allowed region for $h$ in Proca, $h=0.7041_{-0.0087}^{+0.0094}$, overlaps with the 2$σ$ region of the HST data.

Minimally Modified Gravity fitting Planck data better than $Λ$CDM

We study the phenomenology of a class of minimally modified gravity theories called $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories, in which the usual general relativistic Hamiltonian constraint is replaced by a free function of it. After reviewing the construction of the theory and a consistent matter coupling, we analyze the dynamics of cosmology at the levels of both background and perturbations, and present a concrete example of the theory with a $3$-parameter family of the function $f$. Finally, we compare this example model to Planck data as well as some later-time probes, showing that such a realization of $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories fits the data significantly better than the standard $Λ$CDM model, in particular by modifying gravity at intermediate redshifts, $z\simeq743$.

Anisotropic instability in a higher order gravity theory

We study a metric cubic gravity theory considering odd-parity modes of linear inhomogeneous perturbations on a spatially homogeneous Bianchi type I manifold close to the isotropic de Sitter spacetime. We show that in the regime of small anisotropy, the theory possesses new degrees of freedom compared to General Relativity, whose kinetic energy vanishes in the limit of exact isotropy. From the mass dispersion relation we show that such theory always possesses at least one ghost mode as well as a very short-time-scale (compared to the Hubble time) classical tachyonic (or ghost-tachyonic) instability. In order to confirm our analytic analysis, we also solve the equations of motion numerically and we find that this instability is developed well before a single e-fold of the scale factor. This shows that this gravity theory, as it is, cannot be used to construct viable cosmological models.

Phenomenology of the generalized cubic covariant Galileon model and cosmological bounds

We investigate the generalized cubic covariant Galileon model, a kinetically driven dark energy model within the Horndeski class of theories. The model extends the cubic covariant Galileon by including power laws of the field derivatives in the K-essence and cubic terms which still allow for tracker solutions. We study the shape of the viable parameter space by enforcing stability conditions which include the absence of ghost, gradient and tachyon instabilities and the avoidance of strong coupling at early time. We study here the relevant effects of the modifications induced by the model on some cosmological observables such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the lensing potential auto-correlation and the matter power spectrum. For this goal, we perform parameter estimation using data of CMB temperature and polarization, baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO), redshift-space distortions (RSD), supernovae type Ia (SNIa) and Cepheids. Data analysis with CMB alone finds that the today's Hubble parameter $H_0$ is consistent with its determination from Cepheids at $1σ$, resolving the famous tension of the cosmological standard models. The joint analysis of CMB, BAO, RSD and SNIa sets a lower bound for the sum of neutrino masses which is $Σm_ν>0.11$ eV at 1$σ$, in addition to the usual upper limit. The model selection analysis based on the effective $χ_\text{eff}^2$ and Deviance Information Criterion is not able to clearly identify the statistically favored model between $Λ$CDM and the generalized cubic covariant Galileon, from which we conclude that the latter model deserves further studies.

Baryon Physics and Tight Coupling Approximation in Boltzmann Codes

We provide two derivations of the baryonic equations that can be straightforwardly implemented in existing Einstein--Boltzmann solvers. One of the derivations begins with an action principle, while the other exploits the conservation of the stress-energy tensor. While our result is manifestly covariant and satisfies the Bianchi identities, we point out that this is not the case for the implementation of the seminal work by Ma and Bertschinger and in the existing Boltzmann codes. We also study the tight coupling approximation up to the second order without choosing any gauge using the covariant full baryon equations. We implement the improved baryon equations in a Boltzmann code and investigate the change in the estimate of cosmological parameters by performing an MCMC analysis. With the covariantly correct baryon equations of motion, we find 1% deviation for the best fit values of the cosmological parameters that should be taken into account. While in this paper, we study the Lambda-CDM model only, our baryon equations can be easily implemented in other models and various modified gravity theories.

On metric transformations with a $U(1)$ gauge field

We study metric transformations including not just the field strength tensor of a $U(1)$ gauge field, but also its dual tensor. We first consider an arbitrary symmetric matrix built up with these two tensors in the metric transformation. It turns out the form of transformation reduces to a quite simple form on imposing the parity evenness of the transformed metric and by utilising the Cayley-Hamilton theorem as well as other useful identities. Interestingly, the same form for the transformation was recently argued in the process of seeking for a generic metric transformation but without the inclusion of the dual tensor.

Baryogenesis in the paradigm of quintessential inflation

We explore the possibility of baryogenesis in the framework of quintessential inflation. We focus on the model independent features of the underlying paradigm and demonstrate that the required baryon asymmetry can successfully be generated in this scenario. To this effect, we use the effective field theory framework with desired terms in the Lagrangian necessary to mimic baryon number violation \textit{à la} spontaneous baryogenesis which can successfully evade Sakharov's requirement allowing us to generate the observed baryon asymmetry in the equilibrium process. Our estimates are independent of the underlying physical process responsible for baryon number violation. The underlying framework of quintessential inflation essentially includes the presence of kinetic regime after inflation which gives rise to blue spectrum of gravitational wave background at high frequencies. In addition to baryogenesis, we discuss the prospects of detection of relic gravitational wave background, in the future proposed missions, sticking to model independent treatment.

Constraints on massive vector dark energy models from integrated Sachs-Wolfe-galaxy cross-correlations

The gravitational-wave event GW170817, together with the electromagnetic counterpart, shows that the speed of tensor perturbations $c_T$ on the cosmological background is very close to that of light $c$ for the redshift $z<0.009$. In generalized Proca theories, the Lagrangians compatible with the condition $c_T=c$ are constrained to be derivative interactions up to cubic order, besides those corresponding to intrinsic vector modes. We place observational constraints on a dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories with intrinsic vector modes by running the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code. We use the cross-correlation data of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) signal and galaxy distributions in addition to the data sets of cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations, type Ia supernovae, local measurements of the Hubble expansion rate, and redshift-space distortions. We show that, unlike cubic-order scalar-tensor theories, the existence of intrinsic vector modes allows the possibility for evading the ISW-galaxy anticorrelation incompatible with the current observational data. As a result, we find that the dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories exhibits a better fit to the data than the cosmological constant, even by including the ISW-galaxy correlation data in the MCMC analysis.

Bounds from ISW-galaxy cross-correlations on generalized covariant Galileon models

Several modified cosmological models exist, which also try to address the tensions between data and predictions of the $Λ$-CDM model. Galileon models are particular scalar tensor theories that represent one such possibilities. While it is commonly understood that there may be inconsistencies between predictions of some Galileon models and observations, in particular concerning ISW-galaxy cross-correlations, there is no proof yet that these models are completely ruled out. Indeed, by using a specific background in the generalized covariant Galileon theory known as the the tracker solution, here we show that, after imposing all standard theoretical stability constraints, it is still possible to identify a region in the parameter space of the model that allows for positive ISW-galaxy cross-correlations. By a physical interpretation in terms of a chi-square analysis, we confirm the expectation that in this viable region the predictions of generalized covariant Galileon theory on the tracker solution background have higher likelihood when they approach the physics of the $Λ$-CDM model.

Phenomenology in type-I minimally modified gravity

We study cosmology in a class of minimally modified gravity (MMG) with two local gravitational degrees of freedom. We classify modified gravity theories into type-I and type-II: theories of type-I have an Einstein frame and can be recast by change of variables as general relativity (GR) with a non-minimal matter coupling, while theories of type-II have no Einstein frame. Considering a canonical transformation of the lapse, the 3-dimensional induced metric and their conjugate momenta we generate type-I MMG. We then show that phenomenological deviations from GR, such as the speed of gravitational waves $c_T$ and the effective gravitational constant for scalar perturbations $G_{\rm eff}$, are characterized by two functions of an auxiliary variable. We study the phenomenology of several models all having $c_T=1$. We obtain a scenario with $c_T=1$ in which the effective equation-of-state parameter of dark energy is different from $-1$ even though the cosmic acceleration is caused by a bare cosmological constant, and we find that it is possible to reconstruct the theory on choosing a selected time-evolution for the effective dark energy component.

Black holes and stars in the minimal theory of massive gravity

In this letter, we show that any solution of general relativity (GR) that can be rendered spatially flat by a coordinate change is also a solution of the self-accelerating branch of the minimal theory of massive gravity (MTMG), with or without matter. We then for the first time obtain black hole and star solutions in a theory of massive gravity that agree with the corresponding solutions in GR and that are free from strong coupling issues. This in particular implies that the parametrized post-Newtonian parameters $β^{\rm PPN}$ and $γ^{\rm PPN}$ are unity, as in GR. We further show how these solutions can be embedded in a cosmological setting. While cosmological scales have already been considered in previous works, this is the first study of the phenomenology at shorter scales of the self-accelerating branch of MTMG.

Integrated Sachs-Wolfe-galaxy cross-correlation bounds on the two branches of the minimal theory of massive gravity

The minimal theory of massive gravity (MTMG) has two branches of stable cosmological solutions: a self-accelerating branch, which, except for the mass of tensor modes has exactly the same behavior of linear perturbations as $Λ$CDM in general relativity (GR), and a normal branch with nontrivial behavior. We explore the influence of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe-galaxy correlation constraints on the normal branch of MTMG, which, in its simplest implementation, has one free parameter more than $Λ$CDM in GR (or the self-accelerating branch of MTMG): $θ$. This parameter is related to the graviton mass and only affects the behavior of the cosmological linear perturbation dynamics. Using 2d-mass and SDSS data, we check which values of $θ$ lead to a positive or negative cross-correlation. We find that positive cross-correlation is achieved for a large parameter-space interval. Within this allowed region of parameter space, we perform a $χ^2$ analysis in terms of the parameter $θ$, while keeping the other background parameters fixed to the best-fit values of Planck. We then infer that the normal branch of MTMG fits the data well in a nontrivial portion of the parameter space, and future experiments should be able to distinguish such a model from $Λ$CDM in GR (or the self-accelerating branch of MTMG).

Phenomenology of minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity

The minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity with or without a Horndeski-type kinetic term for the quasidilaton field propagates only three physical modes: the two massive tensor polarizations and one scalar mode. This reduced number of degrees of freedom is realized by a Lorentz symmetry violation at cosmological scales and the presence of appropriate constraints that remove unwanted modes. Vacuum cosmological solutions have been considered in a previous work, and it has been shown that the late-time de Sitter attractor is stable under inhomogeneous perturbations. In this work, we explore the stability of cosmological solutions in the presence of matter fields. Assuming for simplicity that the quasidilaton scalar is on an attractor at the level of the background, we derive stability conditions in the subhorizon limit, and find the scalar sound speeds, as well as the modification with respect to general relativity to the gravitational potential in the quasistatic approximation. We also find that the speed limit of gravitational waves coincides with the speed of light for any homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background, on or away from the attractor.

"Shadowy" modes in Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor theories

We consider Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor theories which appear degenerate when restricted to the unitary gauge but are not degenerate in an arbitrary gauge. We dub them U-degenerate theories. We provide a full classification of theories that are either DHOST or U-degenerate and that are quadratic in second derivatives of the scalar field, and discuss its extension to cubic and higher order theories. Working with a simple example of U-degenerate theory, we find that, for configurations in which the scalar field gradient is time-like, the apparent extra mode in such a theory can be understood as a generalized instantaneous, or "shadowy" mode, which does not propagate. Appropriate boundary conditions, required by the elliptic nature of part of the equations of motion, lead to the elimination of the apparent instability associated with this extra mode.

Stable cosmology in chameleon bigravity

The recently proposed chameleonic extension of bigravity theory, by including a scalar field dependence in the graviton potential, avoids several fine-tunings found to be necessary in usual massive bigravity. In particular it ensures that the Higuchi bound is satisfied at all scales, that no Vainshtein mechanism is needed to satisfy solar-system experiments, and that the strong coupling scale is always above the scale of cosmological interest all the way up to the early universe. This paper extends the previous work by presenting a stable example of cosmology in the chameleon bigravity model. We find a set of initial conditions and parameters such that the derived stability conditions on general flat Friedmann background are satisfied at all times. The evolution goes through radiation dominated, matter dominated, and de Sitter eras. We argue that the parameter space allowing for such a stable evolution may be large enough to encompass an observationally viable evolution. We also argue that our model satisfies all known constraints due to gravitational wave observations so far and thus can be considered as a unique testing ground of gravitational wave phenomenologies in bimetric theories of gravity.

Extending applicability of bimetric theory: chameleon bigravity

This article extends bimetric formulations of massive gravity to make the mass of the graviton to depend on its environment. This minimal extension offers a novel way to reconcile massive gravity with local tests of general relativity without invoking the Vainshtein mechanism. On cosmological scales, it is argued that the model is stable and that it circumvents the Higuchi bound, hence relaxing the constraints on the parameter space. Moreover, with this extension the strong coupling scale is also environmentally dependent in such a way that it is kept sufficiently higher than the expansion rate all the way up to the very early universe, while the present graviton mass is low enough to be phenomenologically interesting. In this sense the extended bigravity theory serves as a partial UV completion of the standard bigravity theory. This extension is very generic and robust and a simple specific example is described.

Horndeski extension of the minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity

The minimal theory of quasidilaton massive gravity allows for a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution in a wide range of parameters. On the other hand, in order for the theory to be compatible with local gravity tests, the fifth force due to the quasidilaton scalar needs to be screened at local scales. The present paper thus extends the theory by inclusion of a cubic Horndeski term in a way that (i) respects the quasidilaton global symmetry, that (ii) maintains the physical degrees of freedom in the theory being three, that (iii) can accommodate the Vainshtein screening mechanism and that still (iv) allows for a stable self-accelerating de Sitter solution. After adding the Horndeski term (and a k-essence type nonlinear kinetic term as well) to the precursor action, we switch to the Hamiltonian language and find a complete set of independent constraints. We then construct the minimal theory with three physical degrees of freedom by carefully adding a pair of constraints to the total Hamiltonian of the precursor theory. Switching back to the Lagrangian language, we study cosmological solutions and their stability in the minimal theory. In particular, we show that a self-accelerating de Sitter solution is stable for a wide range of parameters. Furthermore, as in the minimal theory of massive gravity, the propagation speed of the massive gravitational waves in the high momentum limit precisely agrees with the speed of light.
