Quasi-contact metric structures from Sasaki-Einstein metrics

We construct the first examples of quasi-contact metric structures that are not contact metric in every odd dimension greater than or equal to $5$. In dimension $5$, we construct a one-parameter family of such examples with a Killing characteristic vector field by deforming Sasaki-Einstein $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structures. This yields compact, homogeneous examples on $S^5$. In arbitrary dimensions, we investigate quasi-contact metric structures with a Killing characteristic vector field and derive a Ricci curvature criterion for the structure to be K-contact.

On Homogeneous Kähler Manifolds

The cone $M \times \mathbb{R}_+$ over a Sasakian manifold $M$ is equipped with a canonical Kähler structure with specific homogeneity properties with respect to the $\mathbb{R}_+$ coordinate. This Kähler structure completely encodes the underlying Sasakian structure. Recently, Grabowski, Grabowska and Mohseni provided a broader conceptual framework for this phenomenon via homogeneous Kähler structures, i.e. Kähler structures on a principal $\mathbb{R}^\times$-bundle $P$ satisfying similar homogeneity properties. This approach successfully extends Sasakian geometry from cooriented contact manifolds (where $P$ is a trivial principal bundle) to non-necessarily coorientable contact structures (where $P$ is non-necessarily trivial). Homogeneous Kähler structures are genuinely more general than Sasakian structures and this note precisely characterizes the extent of this generalization. This is achieved through a detailed analysis of all the involved compatibilities in terms of the line bundle tautologically associated to $P$. We also show that modifying the homogeneity condition on the Kähler structure allows this framework to encompass co-Kähler structures and a natural generalization of those as well.

A Parametric Similarity Method: Comparative Experiments based on Semantically Annotated Large Datasets

We present the parametric method SemSimp aimed at measuring semantic similarity of digital resources. SemSimp is based on the notion of information content, and it leverages a reference ontology and taxonomic reasoning, encompassing different approaches for weighting the concepts of the ontology. In particular, weights can be computed by considering either the available digital resources or the structure of the reference ontology of a given domain. SemSimp is assessed against six representative semantic similarity methods for comparing sets of concepts proposed in the literature, by carrying out an experimentation that includes both a statistical analysis and an expert judgement evaluation. To the purpose of achieving a reliable assessment, we used a real-world large dataset based on the Digital Library of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and a reference ontology derived from the ACM Computing Classification System (ACM-CCS). For each method, we considered two indicators. The first concerns the degree of confidence to identify the similarity among the papers belonging to some special issues selected from the ACM Transactions on Information Systems journal, the second the Pearson correlation with human judgement. The results reveal that one of the configurations of SemSimp outperforms the other assessed methods. An additional experiment performed in the domain of physics shows that, in general, SemSimp provides better results than the other similarity methods.

Integrable LCK manifolds

We study a natural class of LCK manifolds that we call integrable LCK manifolds: those where the anti-Lee form $η$ corresponds to an integrable distribution. As an application we obtain a characterization of unimodular integrable LCK Lie algebras as Kähler Lie algebras equipped with suitable derivations.

Hybrid Particle-Field Molecular Dynamics Under Constant Pressure

Hybrid particle-field methods are computationally efficient approaches for modelling soft matter systems. So far applications of these methodologies have been limited to constant volume conditions. Here, we reformulate particle-field interactions to represent systems coupled to constant external pressure. First, we show that the commonly used particle-field energy functional can be modified to model and parameterize the isotropic contributions to the pressure tensor without interfering with the microscopic forces on the particles. Second, we employ a square gradient particle-field interaction term to model non-isotropic contributions to the pressure tensor, such as in surface tension phenomena. This formulation is implemented within the hybrid particle-field molecular dynamics approach and is tested on a series of model systems. Simulations of a homogeneous water box demonstrate that it is possible to parameterize the equation of state to reproduce any target density for a given external pressure. Moreover, the same parameterization is transferable to systems of similar coarse-grained mapping resolution. Finally, we evaluate the feasibility of the proposed approach on coarse-grained models of phospholipids, finding that the term between water and the lipid hydrocarbon tails is alone sufficient to reproduce the experimental area per lipid in constant-pressure simulations, and to produce a qualitatively correct lateral pressure profile.

Influence of polymer bidispersity on the effective particle-particle interactions in polymer nanocomposites

We investigate the role played by the bidispersity of polymer chains on the local structure and the potential of mean force (PMF) between silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a polystyrene melt. We use the hybrid particle-field molecular dynamics technique which allows to efficiently relax polymer nanocomposites even with high molecular weights. The NPs we investigate are either bare or grafted with polystyrene chains immersed in a melt of free polystyrene chains, whereas the grafted and the free polystyrene chains are either monodisperse or bidisperse. The two-body PMF shows that a bidisperse distribution of free polymer chains increases the strength of attraction between a pair of ungrafted NPs. If the NPs are grafted by polymer chains, the effective interaction crucially depends on bidispersity and grafting density of the polymer chains: for low grafting densities, the bidispersity of both free and grafted chains increases the repulsion between the NPs, whereas for high grafting densities we observe two different effects. An increase of bidispersity in free chains causes the rise of the repulsion between the NPs, while an increase of bidispersity in grafted chains promotes the rise of attraction. Additionally, a proper treatment of multi-body interactions improves the simpler two-body PMF calculations, in both unimodal and bimodal cases. We found that, by properly tuning the bidispersity of both free and grafted chains, we can control the structure of the composite materials, which can be confirmed by experimental observations. As a result, the hybrid particle-field approach is confirmed to be a valid tool for reproducing and predicting microscopic interactions, which determine the stability of the microscopic structure of the composite in a wide range of conditions.

Nearly Sasakian manifolds revisited

We provide a new, self-contained and more conceptual proof of the result that an almost contact metric manifold of dimension greater than 5 is Sasakian if and only if it is nearly Sasakian.

Molecular Structure and Multi-Body Potential of Mean Force in Silica-Polystyrene Nanocomposites

We perform a systematic application of the hybrid particle-field molecular dynamics technique [Milano et al, J. Chem. Phys. 2009, 130, 214106] to study interfacial properties and potential of mean force (PMF) for separating nanoparticles (NPs) in a melt. Specifically, we consider Silica NPs bare or grafted with Polystyrene chains, aiming to shed light on the interactions among free and grafted chains affecting the dispersion of NPs in the nanocomposite. The proposed hybrid models show good performances in catching the local structure of the chains, and in particular their density profiles, documenting the existence of the "wet-brush-to-dry-brush" transition. By using these models, the PMF between pairs of ungrafted and grafted NPs in Polystyrene matrix are calculated. Moreover, we estimate the three-particle contribution to the total PMF and its role in regulating the phase separation on the nanometer scale. In particular, the multi-particle contribution to the PMF is able to give an explanation of the complex experimental morphologies observed at low grafting densities. More in general, we propose this approach and the models utilized here for a molecular understanding of specific systems and the impact of the chemical nature of the systems on the composite final properties.

On nearly Sasakian and nearly cosymplectic manifolds

We prove that every nearly Sasakian manifold of dimension greater than five is Sasakian. This provides a new criterion for an almost contact metric manifold to be Sasakian. Moreover, we classify nearly cosymplectic manifolds of dimension greater than five.

Hard Lefschetz Theorem for Vaisman manifolds

We establish a Hard Lefschetz Theorem for the de Rham cohomology of compact Vaisman manifolds. A similar result is proved for the basic cohomology with respect to the Lee vector field. Motivated by these results, we introduce the notions of a Lefschetz and of a basic Lefschetz locally conformal symplectic (l.c.s.) manifold of the first kind. We prove that the two notions are equivalent if there exists a Riemannian metric such that the Lee vector field is unitary and parallel and its metric dual $1$-form coincides with the Lee $1$-form. Finally, we discuss several examples of compact l.c.s. manifolds of the first kind which do not admit compatible Vaisman metrics.

Interests Diffusion on a Semantic Multiplex

Exploiting the information about members of a Social Network (SN) represents one of the most attractive and dwelling subjects for both academic and applied scientists. The community of Complexity Science and especially those researchers working on multiplex social systems are devoting increasing efforts to outline general laws, models, and theories, to the purpose of predicting emergent phenomena in SN's (e.g. success of a product). On the other side the semantic web community aims at engineering a new generation of advanced services tailored to specific people needs. This implies defining constructs, models and methods for handling the semantic layer of SNs. We combined models and techniques from both the former fields to provide a hybrid approach to understand a basic (yet complex) phenomenon: the propagation of individual interests along the social networks. Since information may move along different social networks, one should take into account a multiplex structure. Therefore we introduced the notion of "Semantic Multiplex". In this paper we analyse two different semantic social networks represented by authors publishing in the Computer Science and those in the American Physical Society Journals. The comparison allows to outline common and specific features

Reduction of pre-Hamiltonian actions

We prove a reduction theorem for the tangent bundle of a Poisson manifold $(M, π)$ endowed with a pre-Hamiltonian action of a Poisson Lie group $(G, π_G)$. In the special case of a Hamiltonian action of a Lie group, we are able to compare our reduction to the classical Marsden-Ratiu reduction of $M$. If the manifold $M$ is symplectic and simply connected, the reduced tangent bundle is integrable and its integral symplectic groupoid is the Marsden-Weinstein reduction of the pair groupoid $M \times \bar{M}$.

Generalized Goldberg Formula

In this paper we prove a useful formula for the graded commutator of the Hodge codifferential with the left wedge multiplication by a fixed $p$-form acting on the de Rham algebra of a Riemannian manifold. Our formula generalizes a formula stated by Samuel I. Goldberg for the case of 1-forms. As first examples of application we obtain new identities on locally conformally Kaehler manifolds and quasi-Sasakian manifolds. Moreover, we prove that under suitable conditions a certain subalgebra of differential forms in a compact manifold is quasi-isomorphic as a CDGA to the full de Rham algebra.

Examples of 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds

We provide a general method to construct examples of quasi-Sasakian 3-structures on a (4n+3)-dimensional manifold. Moreover, among this class, we give the first explicit example of a compact 3-quasi-Sasakian manifold which is not the global product of a 3-Sasakian manifold and a hyper-Kähler manifold.
