On Weighted Residual and Past Entropies

We consider a "length-biased" shift-dependent information measure, related to the differential entropy in which higher weight is assigned to large values of observed random variables. This allows us to introduce the notions of "weighted residual entropy" and "weighted past entropy", that are suitable to describe dynamic information of random lifetimes, in analogy with the entropies of residual and past lifetimes introduced in [9] and [6], respectively. The obtained results include their behaviors under monotonic transformations.

A double-ended queue with catastrophes and repairs, and a jump-diffusion approximation

Consider a system performing a continuous-time random walk on the integers, subject to catastrophes occurring at constant rate, and followed by exponentially-distributed repair times. After any repair the system starts anew from state zero. We study both the transient and steady-state probability laws of the stochastic process that describes the state of the system. We then derive a heavy-traffic approximation to the model that yields a jump-diffusion process. The latter is equivalent to a Wiener process subject to randomly occurring jumps, whose probability law is obtained. The goodness of the approximation is finally discussed.

Competing risks within shock models

We consider a competing risks model, in which system failures are due to one out of two mutually exclusive causes, formulated within the framework of shock models driven by bivariate Poisson process. We obtain the failure densities and the survival functions as well as other related quantities under three different schemes. Namely, system failures are assumed to occur at the first instant in which a random constant threshold is reached by (a) the sum of received shocks, (b) the minimum of shocks, (c) the maximum of shocks.

On some transformations of bilateral birth-and-death processes with applications

A method yielding simple relationships among bilateral birth-and-death processes is outlined. This allows one to relate birth and death rates of two processes in such a way that their transition probabilities, first-passage-time densities and ultimate crossing probabilities are mutually related by some product-form expressions.

Random motion with gamma-distributed alternating velocities in biological modeling

Motivated by applications in mathematical biology concerning randomly alternating motion of micro-organisms, we analyze a generalized integrated telegraph process. The random times between consecutive velocity reversals are gamma-distributed, and perform an alternating renewal process. We obtain the probability law and the mean of the process.

On certain bounds for first-crossing-time probabilities of a jump-diffusion process

We consider the first-crossing-time problem through a constant boundary for a Wiener process perturbed by random jumps driven by a counting process. On the base of a sample-path analysis of the jump-diffusion process we obtain explicit lower bounds for the first-crossing-time density and for the first-crossing-time distribution function. In the case of the distribution function, the bound is improved by use of processes comparison based on the usual stochastic order. The special case of constant jumps driven by a Poisson process is thoroughly discussed.

A Parrondo Paradox in Reliability Theory

Parrondo's paradox arises in sequences of games in which a winning expectation may be obtained by playing the games in a random order, even though each game in the sequence may be lost when played individually. We present a suitable version of Parrondo's paradox in reliability theory involving two systems in series, the units of the first system being less reliable than those of the second. If the first system is modified so that the distributions of its new units are mixtures of the previous distributions with equal probabilities, then under suitable conditions the new system is shown to be more reliable than the second in the "usual stochastic order" sense.

On the Effect of Random Alternating Perturbations on Hazard Rates

We consider a model for systems perturbed by dichotomous noise, in which the hazard rate function of a random lifetime is subject to additive time-alternating perturbations described by the telegraph process. This leads us to define a real-valued continuous-time stochastic process of alternating type expressed in terms of the integrated telegraph process for which we obtain the probability distribution, mean and variance. An application to survival analysis and reliability data sets based on confidence bands for estimated hazard rate functions is also provided.

On First-Passage-Time Densities for Certain Symmetric Markov Chains

The spatial symmetry property of truncated birth-death processes studied in Di Crescenzo [6] is extended to a wider family of continuous-time Markov chains. We show that it yields simple expressions for first-passage-time densities and avoiding transition probabilities, and apply it to a bilateral birth-death process with jumps. It is finally proved that this symmetry property is preserved within the family of strongly similar Markov chains.
