On the violation of the holographic viscosity versus entropy KSS bound in non relativistic systems

A computation of the quotient of shear viscosity to entropy density, or KSS number $η/s$ is performed, in the non-relativistic and classical regime, first in Chiral Perturbation Theory, and then in the $SO(g+1)/SO(g)$ Non-Linear Sigma Model in the large $g$ limit. Both are field theories stemming from a renormalizable Sigma Model but in spite of that, we explicitly calculate how one undercomes the KSS bound by increasing the number of degenerate pions sufficiently. However we argue that particle production could still keep the validity of the KSS bound in the weak sense. We also show how a large number of molecular isomers (that we estimate in terms of simple molecular properties) could undercome the bound in the strong sense. This might be possible with carbon-based molecules. We finally argue that a measurement of $η/s$ in Heavy Ion Collisions might be turned into an upper bound on the number of hadron resonances.

The ratio of viscosity to entropy density in a pion gas satisfies the KSS holographic bound

We evaluate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in a pion gas employing the Uehling-Uehlenbeck equation and experimental phase-shifts parameterized by means of the SU(2) Inverse Amplitude Method. We find that the ratio for this monocomponent gas stays well above the KSS 1/(4 pi) bound. We find similar results with other sets of phase shifts and conclude the bound is nowhere violated.

New Developments in Extra-dimensional Dark Matter

We summarize the main features of several dark matter candidates in extra-dimensional theories. In particular, we review Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons in universal extra dimensions and branons in brane-world models. KK gravitons are superWIMP (superweakly-interacting massive particle) dark matter, and branons are WIMP (weakly-interacting massive particle) dark matter. Both dark matter candidates are naturally produced in the correct amount to form much or all of dark matter.

Shear Viscosity in a CFL Quark Star

We compute the mean free path and shear viscosity in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of dense quark matter at low temperature T, when the contributions of mesons, quarks and gluons to the transport coefficients are Boltzmann suppressed. CFL quark matter displays superfluid properties, and transport phenomena in such cold regime are dominated by phonon-phonon scattering. We study superfluid phonons within thermal field theory and compute the mean free path associated to their most relevant collision processes. Small-angle processes turn out to be more efficient in slowing transport phenomena in the CFL matter, while the mean free path relevant for the shear viscosity is less sensitive to collinear scattering due to the presence of zero modes in the Boltzmann equation. In analogy with superfluid He4, we find the same T power law for the superfluid phonon damping rate and mean free path. Our results are relevant for the study of rotational properties of compact stars, and correct wrong estimates existing in the literature.

An elementary introduction to the Holographic Principle

In this work we review at an elementary level the origin, main ideas and present status of the so called holographic principle. This principle, even in the absence of a precise formulation, is seen by many people as a major clue for the understanding of the relationship betweeen quantum mechanics and general relativity. The topics considered here include black hole thermodynamics, the information paradox, entropy bounds, the covariant formulation, and a short discussion on the compatibility of the holographic principle with quantum field theory and modern string theory.

The Viscosity of Meson Matter

We report a calculation of the shear viscosity in a relativistic multicomponent meson gas as a function of temperature and chemical potentials. We approximately solve the Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport equation of kinetic theory, appropriate for a boson gas, with relativistic kinematics. Since at low temperatures the gas can be taken as mostly composed of pions, with a fraction of kaons and etas, we explore the region where binary elastic collisions with at least one pion are the dominant scattering processes. Our input meson scattering phase shifts are fits to the experimental data obtained from chiral perturbation theory and the Inverse Amplitude Method. Our results take the correct non-relativistic limit (viscosity proportional to the square root of the temperature), show a viscosity of order the cubed of the pion mass up to temperatures somewhat below that mass, and then a large increase due to kaons and etas. Our approximation may break down at even higher temperatures, where the viscosity follows a temperature power law with an exponent near 3.

Pion Gas Viscosity

We briefly report a calculation of the viscosity of a pion gas at finite temperature and chemical potential using three different models for the pion-pion interaction. The results for the Inverse Amplitude Method interpolation yield a viscosity of order (m_pi^3) up to temperatures of order m_pi. The calculation is performed within the kinetic theory of gases, by approximately solving the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation with relativistic kinematics.

Quantum effects to the Higgs boson self-couplings in the SM and in the MSSM

We show that the effects of heavy Higgs particles and heavy top-squarks in the one-loop self-couplings of the lightest CP-even MSSM Higgs boson decouple from the low energy theory when the self-couplings are expressed in terms of the Higgs boson mass M_h0. Our conclusion is that the h^0 self-interactions become very close to those of the SM Higgs boson and, therefore, MSSM quantum effects could only be revealed by very high precision experiments.

Self-interactions of the lightest MSSM Higgs boson in the large pseudoscalar-mass limit

We investigate the decoupling properties of the Higgs-sector-induced one-loop corrections in the lightest Higgs-boson self-couplings, in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The renormalized n-point vertex functions with external Higgs particles in the MSSM and in the SM are derived to the one-loop level and compared in the MA >> MZ limit. The computation has been done in a general R_{xi} gauge and the on-shell renormalization scheme is chosen. By a comparison of the renormalized lightest Higgs-boson h^0 vertex functions with respect to the corresponding SM ones, we find that the differences between the predictions of both models are summarized in the lightest Higgs-boson mass correction Delta Mh. Consequently, the radiative corrections are absorbed in the Higgs-boson mass, and the trilinear and quartic h^0 self-couplings acquire the same structure as the couplings of the SM Higgs-boson. Therefore, decoupling of the heavy MSSM Higgs bosons occurs and the MSSM h^0 self-interactions converge to the SM ones in the MA >> MZ limit.

Effective Higgs-quark-quark couplings from a heavy SUSY spectrum

In this paper we study the Yukawa Higgs-quark-quark interactions that are generated from radiative corrections of squarks and gluinos, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We compute the corrections to the effective action for Higgs and quark fields that are produced by explicit integration, in the path integral formalism, of all the squarks and gluinos, at the one-loop level and order $α_s$. In addition, we consider the limit of nearly degenerate heavy squarks and gluinos, with masses much larger than the electroweak scale, and derive the effective Lagrangian containing all the relevant new local Higgs-quark-quark interactions. We show that these new interactions do remain non-vanishing, even in the case of infinitely heavy supersymmetric particles and, therefore, we demonstrate explicitly the non-decoupling behavior of squarks and gluinos in Higgs bosons physics. We present the set of new Yukawa couplings and finally derive the corresponding one-loop, order $α_s$, corrections to the Higgs bosons partial decay widths into quarks.

Pion gas viscosity at low temperature and density

By using Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation we compute the viscosity of a pion gas, in the low temperature and low density regime, in terms of the temperature, and the pion fugacity. The viscosity turns out to be proportional to the squared root of the temperature over the pion mass. Next to leading corrections are proportional to the temperature over the pion mass to the 3/2.

The dynamics of the Goldstone bosons on the brane

We study, within the recently proposed brane-world scenario, the effective action for the low-energy brane excitations. These modes are understood as Goldstone bosons associated to the spontaneous isometry breaking, induced on the bulk space by the presence of the brane. Starting from the Nambu-Goto action for the brane, we obtain a non-linear sigma model describing the low-energy interactions of the Goldstone bosons and extend the calculation up to O(p^4). We also discuss the Higgs-like mechanism in which the Kaluza-Klein gauge fields absorb the Goldstone bosons and acquire mass. Finally, we present the explicit form of the effective action describing the low-energy interactions between the three-brane Goldstone bosons and the particles present in the Standard Model.

The Higgs sector of the MSSM in the decoupling limit

We study the heavy Higgs sector of the MSSM composed of the H^\pm, H^0 and A^0 particles in the so-called decoupling limit where m_{A^0} >> m_Z. By integrating out these heavy Higgs particles to one-loop, we compute the effective action for the electroweak gauge bosons and find out that, in the decoupling limit, all the heavy Higgs effects can be absorbed into redefinitions of the Standard Model electroweak parameters. This demonstrates explicitely that the decoupling theorem works for the heavy MSSM Higgs particles. This is also compared with the paradigmatic and different case of the Standard Model heavy Higgs particle. Finally, this work together with our two previous works, complete the demonstration that all the non-standard particles in the MSSM, namely, squarks, sleptons, charginos, neutralinos and the heavy Higgs particles, decouple to one-loop from the low energy electroweak gauge boson physics.

Nonlocal low-energy effective action for gravity with torsion

In this work we calculate the low-energy effective action for gravity with torsion, obtained after the integration of scalar and fermionic matter fields, using the local momentum representation based on the Riemann normal coordinates expansion. By considering this expansion around different space-time points, we also compute the nonlocal terms together with the more usual divergent ones. Finally we discuss the applicability of our results to the calculation of particle production probabilities.

Particle production from nonlocal gravitational effective action

In this paper we show how the nonlocal effective action for gravity, obtained after integrating out the matter fields, can be used to compute particle production and spectra for different space-time metrics. Applying this technique to several examples, we find that the perturbative calculation of the effective action up to second order in curvatures yields exactly the same results for the total number of particles as the Bogolyubov transformations method, in the case of masless scalar fields propagating in a Robertson-Walker space-time. Using an adiabatic approximation we also obtain the corresponding spectra and compare the results with the traditional WKB approximation.

Some aspects of the Standard Model in gravitational backgrounds with torsion

Torsion appears in a natural way in modern formulations of the gravitational theories. In this work we study several aspects of the interplay between the Standard Model and a classical gravitational background with torsion. In particular we consider the problem of the gauge and gravitational anomalies, $B$ and $L$ anomalies, the effective action for the torsion and the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in the presence of torsion.

The lepton anomaly in the presence of torsion

In the presence of a curved space-time with torsion, the divergence of the leptonic current gets new contributions from the curvature and the torsion in addition to those coming from the electroweak fields. However it is possible to define a new lepton current which is gauge and local Lorentz invariant whose divergence gets no contribution from the torsion. Therefore we argue that torsion does not contribute to anomalous lepton number production

Primordial torsion fields as an explanation of the anisotropy in cosmological electromagnetic propagation

In this note we provide a simple explanation of the recent finding of anisotropy in electromagnetic (EM) propagation claimed by Nodland and Ralston (astro-ph/9704196). We consider, as a possible origin of such effect, the effective coupling between EM fields and some tiny background torsion field. The coupling is obtained after integrating out charged fermions, it is gauge invariant and does not require the introduction of any new physics.
