Thermal superpotential and thermodynamics of neutral hairy black holes in extended SUGRA

We present a family of exact neutral hairy black-hole solutions with spherical horizon topology in extended supergravity with Fayet--Iliopoulos terms. We consider a consistent dilaton truncation and analyze in detail a sector where the magnetic part of the FI terms vanishes. Using appropriate dilaton counterterms, we compute the thermodynamic quantities and show the existence of Hawking--Page phase transitions. As a holographic application, we derive the thermal superpotential in closed form and use it as a counterterm, explicitly demonstrating that no additional finite counterterms are required to regularize the Euclidean action and the quasi-local stress tensor. The dual stress tensor matches that of a thermal gas of massless particles and is consistent with mixed dilaton boundary conditions that preserve conformal symmetry.

A new method for structural diagnostics with muon tomography and deep learning

This work investigates the production of high-resolution images of typical support elements in concrete structures by means of muon tomography (muography). By exploiting detailed Monte Carlo radiation-matter simulations, we demonstrate the feasibility of reconstructing 1 cm-thick iron bars inside 30 cm-deep concrete blocks, regarded as an important testbed within the structural diagnostics community. In addition, we present a new method for integrating simulated data with advanced deep learning techniques in order to improve the muon imaging of concrete structures. Through deep learning enhancement techniques, this results in a dramatic improvement in image quality and a significant reduction in data acquisition time, which are two critical limitations within the usual practice of muography for civil engineering diagnostics.

Gravitational effects in a superconducting film struck by a laser pulse

We study the local interaction of the gravitational field with a superfluid condensate. To this end, we exploit the Ginzburg-Landau formalism with generalized Maxwell fields. The analysis shows that a slight local alteration of the gravitational field in a thin superconducting film can be achieved by laser pulses with particular characteristics.

A Positive Energy Theorem for AdS Solitons

The uncharged AdS$_4$ soliton has been recently shown to be continuously connected to a magnetic, supersymmetric AdS$_4$ soliton within $\mathcal{N}=8$ gauged supergravity. By constructing the asymptotic superalgebra, we establish a positive energy theorem for the magnetic AdS$_4$ solitons admitting well-defined asymptotic Killing spinors, antiperiodic on a contractible $S^1$. We show that there exists only one discrete solution endowed with these boundary conditions satisfying the bound, the latter being saturated by the null energy supersymmetric configuration. Despite having negative energy, the uncharged AdS$_4$ soliton does not contradict the positive energy theorem, as it does not admit well-defined asymptotic Killing spinors.

Supersymmetric solitons in gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity

We consider soliton solutions in AdS$_{4}$ with a flat slicing and Wilson loops around one cycle. We study the phase structure and find the ground state and identify supersymmetric solutions as a function of the Wilson loops. We work in the context of a scalar field truncation of gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity, where all the dilatons are equal and all the axions vanish in the STU model. In this theory, we construct new soliton solutions parameterized by two Wilson lines. We find that there is a degeneracy of supersymmetric solutions. We also show that, for alternate boundary conditions, there exists a non-supersymmetric soliton solution with energy lower than the supersymmetric one.

Interaction between macroscopic quantum systems and gravity

We review experiments and theoretical models about the possible mutual interplay between the gravitational field and materials in the superconducting state or other macroscopic quantum states. More generally, we focus on the possibility for quantum macrosystems in a coherent state to produce local alterations of the gravitational field in which they are immersed. This fully interdisciplinary research field has witnessed a conspicuous progress in the last decades, with hundreds of published papers, and yet several questions are still completely open.

Impact of Lorentz violation models on exoplanets dynamics

Many exoplanets were detected thanks to the radial velocity method, according to which the motion of a binary system around its center of mass can produce a periodical variation of the Doppler effect of the light emitted by the host star. These variations are influenced by both Newtonian and non-Newtonian perturbations to the dominant inverse-square acceleration; accordingly, exoplanetary systems lend themselves to test theories of gravity alternative to General Relativity. In this paper, we consider the impact of Standard Model Extension (a model that can be used to test all possible Lorentz violations) on the perturbation of radial velocity, and suggest that suitable exoplanets configurations and improvements in detection techniques may contribute to obtain new constraints on the model parameters.

Graphene, Dirac equation and analogue gravity

We provide an updated study of some electronic properties of graphene nanoscrolls, exploiting a related curved space Dirac equation for the charge carriers. To this end, we consider an explicit parametrization in cylindrical coordinates, together with analytical solutions for the pseudoparticle modes living on the two--dimensional background. These results are then used to obtain a compact expression for the sample optical conductivity, deriving from a Kubo formula adapted to the 1+2 dimensional curved space. The latter formulation is then adopted to perform some simulations for a cylindrical nanoscroll geometry.

Superconductors and gravity

We review and discuss some recent developments on the unconventional interaction between superconducting systems and the local gravitational field. While it is known that gravitational perturbations (such as gravitational waves) can affect supercondensates and supercurrents dynamics, here we want to focus on the more subtle superfluid back-reaction acting on the surrounding gravitational field, analysing some specific favourable situations. To this end, we will consider suitable quantum macrosystems in a coherent state, immersed in the static weak Earth's gravitational field, investigating possible slight local alterations of the latter not explained in terms of classical physics.

Superconductor in static gravitational, electric and magnetic fields with vortex lattice

We estimate the conjectured interaction between the Earth gravitational field and a superconductor immersed in external, static electric and magnetic field. The latter is close to the sample upper critical field and generates the presence of a vortex lattice. The proposed interaction could lead to multiple, measurable effects. First of all, a local affection of the gravitational field inside the superconductor could take place. Second, a new component of a generalized electric field parallel to the superconductor surface is generated inside the sample. The analysis is performed by using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory combined with the gravito-Maxwell formalism. This approach leads us to analytic solutions of the problem, also providing the average values of the generated fields and corrections inside the sample. We will also study which are the physical parameters to optimize and, in turn, the most suitable materials to maximize the effect.

Instability of supersymmetric black holes via quantum phase transitions

In this paper we prove that the four-dimensional hyperbolic supersymmetric black holes can be unstable in the canonical ensemble. To this end, we work with an infinite class of $\,\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories interpolating between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\,\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. Within these models, we study electrically charged solutions of two different kinds: supersymmetric hairy and extremal non-supersymmetric Reissner-Nordström black holes. We consider these solutions within the same canonical ensemble and show that, for suitable choices of the parameters defining the $\,\mathcal{N}=2$ model, the supersymmetric solution features a higher free energy than the non-supersymmetric one. In the absence of additional selection rules, this would imply an instability of the supersymmetric configuration, hinting towards a possible supersymmetry breaking mechanism.

Interaction between superconductors and weak gravitational field

We consider the interaction between the Earth's gravitational field and a superconductor in the fluctuation regime. Exploiting the weak field expansion formalism and using time dependent Ginzburg-Landau formulation, we show a possible short-time alteration of the gravitational field in the vicinity of the superconductor.

Exploiting weak field gravity-Maxwell symmetry in superconductive fluctuations regime

We study the behaviour of a superconductor in a weak static gravitational field for temperatures slightly greater than its transition temperature (fluctuation regime). Making use of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, we find a possible short time alteration of the static gravitational field in the vicinity of the superconductor, providing also a qualitative behaviour in the weak field condition. Finally, we compare the behaviour of various superconducting materials, investigating which parameters could enhance the gravitational field alteration.

Supersymmetric theories and graphene

We discuss a 1+2 dimensional model with unconventional supersymmetry at the boundary of an AdS${}_4$, \,$\mathcal{N}$-extended supergravity. The resulting features of the supersymmetric boundary open the possibility of describing the electronic properties of graphene-like 2D materials at the Dirac points \textbf{K} and \textbf{K'}, exploiting a top-down approach. The Semenoff and Haldane-type masses entering the corresponding Dirac equations can be then extrapolated from the geometric parameters of the model describing the substrate.

New non-extremal and BPS hairy black holes in gauged $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity

In this article we study a family of four-dimensional, $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories that interpolates between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. In this infinitely many theories characterized by two real numbers -- the interpolation parameter and the dyonic "angle" of the gauging -- we construct non-extremal electrically or magnetically charged black hole solutions and their supersymmetric limits. All the supersymmetric black holes have non-singular horizons with spherical, hyperbolic or planar topology. Some of these supersymmetric and non-extremal black holes are new examples in the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory that do not belong to the STU model. We compute the asymptotic charges, thermodynamics and boundary conditions of these black holes and show that all of them, except one, introduce a triple trace deformation in the dual theory.

Exact holographic RG flows in extended SUGRA

We present a family of exact planar hairy neutral black hole solutions in extended supergravity with Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms. We consider a model where the magnetic part of FI sector vanishes and obtain the superpotential at finite temperature in analytic form. Then, we discuss the thermodynamics and some holographic properties of these solutions. We regularize the action by two different methods, one with gravitational and scalar counterterms and the other using the thermal superpotential as a counterterm, and compute the holographic stress tensor. We also construct the $c$-function of the corresponding RG flow and obtain an exact holographic $β$-function for this model.

Negative-curvature spacetime solutions for graphene

We provide a detailed analysis of the electronic properties of graphene-like materials with charge carriers living on a curved substrate, focusing in particular on constant negative-curvature spacetime. An explicit parametrization is also worked out in the remarkable case of Beltrami geometry, with an analytic solution for the pseudoparticles modes living on the curved bidimensional surface. We will then exploit the correspondent massless Dirac description, to determine how it affects the sample local density of states.

Superconductor in a weak static gravitational field

We provide the detailed calculation of a general form for Maxwell and London equations that takes into account gravitational corrections in linear approximation. We determine the possible alteration of a static gravitational field in a superconductor making use of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations, providing also an analytic solution in the weak field condition. Finally, we compare the behavior of a high-Tc superconductor with a classical low-Tc superconductor, analyzing the values of the parameters that can enhance the reduction of the gravitational field.
