Dynamics of critical vortices on the torus and on the plane

We use the Bradlow parameter expansion to construct the metric tensor in the space of solutions of the Bogomolny equations for the Abelian Higgs model on a two-dimensional torus. Using this metric we study the dynamics and scattering of vortices on the torus within the geodesic approximation. For small torus volumes the metric is determined in terms of a small number of parameters. For large volumes the results provide a very precise approximation to the metric and dynamics on the plane.

Gluino zero-modes for non-trivial holonomy calorons

We couple fermion fields in the adjoint representation (gluinos) to the SU(2) gauge field of unit charge calorons defined on R^3 x S_1. We compute corresponding zero-modes of the Dirac equation. These are relevant in semiclassical studies of N=1 Super-symmetric Yang-Mills theory. Our formulas, show that, up to a term proportional to the vector potential, the modes can be constructed by different linear combinations of two contributions adding up to the total caloron field strength.

Adjoint modes as probes of gauge field structure

We show how zero-modes and quasi-zero-modes of the Dirac operator in the adjoint representation can be used to construct an estimate of the action density distribution of a pure gauge field theory, which is less sensitive to the ultraviolet fluctuations of the field. This can be used to trace the topological structures present in the vacuum. The construction relies on the special properties satisfied by the supersymmetric zero-modes.

Expansion for the solutions of the Bogomolny equations on the torus

We show that the solutions of the Bogomolny equations for the Abelian Higgs model on a two-dimensional torus, can be expanded in powers of a quantity epsilon measuring the departure of the area from the critical area. This allows a precise determination of the shape of the solutions for all magnetic fluxes and arbitrary position of the Higgs field zeroes. The expansion is carried out to 51 orders for a couple of representative cases, including the unit flux case. We analyse the behaviour of the expansion in the limit of large areas, in which case the solutions approach those on the plane. Our results suggest convergence all the way up to infinite area.

Chern-Simons production during preheating in hybrid inflation models

We study the onset of symmetry breaking after hybrid inflation in a model having the field content of the SU(2) gauge-scalar sector of the standard model, coupled to a singlet inflaton. This process is studied in (3+1)-dimensions in a fully non-perturbative way with the help of lattice techniques within the classical approximation. We focus on the role played by gauge fields and, in particular, on the generation of Chern-Simons number. Our results are shown to be insensitive to the various cut-offs introduced in our numerical approach. The spectra preserves a large hierarchy between long and short-wavelength modes during the whole period of symmetry breaking and Chern-Simons generation, confirming that the dynamics is driven by the low momentum sector of the theory. We establish that the Chern-Simons production mechanism is associated with local sphaleron-like structures. The corresponding sphaleron rates are of order 10^{-5} m^4, which, within certain scenarios of electroweak baryogenesis and a (not unnaturally large) additional source of CP violation, could explain the present baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Symmetry Breaking and False Vacuum Decay after Hybrid Inflation

We discuss the onset of symmetry breaking from the false vacuum in generic scenarios in which the mass squared of the symmetry breaking (Higgs) field depends linearly with time, as it occurs, via the evolution of the inflaton, in models of hybrid inflation. We show that the Higgs fluctuations evolve from quantum to classical during the initial stages. This justifies the subsequent use of real-time lattice simulations to describe the fully non-perturbative and non-linear process of symmetry breaking. The early distribution of the Higgs field is that of a smooth classical gaussian random field, and consists of lumps whose shape and distribution is well understood analytically. The lumps grow with time and develop into ``bubbles'' which eventually collide among themselves, thus populating the high momentum modes, in their way towards thermalization at the true vacuum. With the help of some approximations we are able to provide a quasi-analytic understanding of this process.

From Perturbation Theory to Confinement: How the String Tension is built up

We study the spatial volume dependence of electric flux energies for SU(2) Yang-Mills fields on the torus with twisted boundary conditions. The results approach smoothly the rotational invariant Confinement regime. The would-be string tension is very close to the infinite volume result already for volumes of $(1.2 \ {\rm fm.})^3$. We speculate on the consequences of our result for the Confinement mechanism.

On the top of the energy barrier. Margarita Garcia Perez

We present results related to the search of SU(2) instantons on a geometry $[0,L]^3\times [0,T]$ obtained using over-improved cooling with fixed boundary conditions. We also introduce a criterion for finding a sphaleron at the top of the energy barrier of the instanton path.

Instantons from over-improved cooling

Lattice artefacts are used, through modified lattice actions, as a tool to find the largest instantons in a toroidal geometry [0,L]^3X[0,T] for T to infinity. It is conjectured that the largest instanton is associated with tunnelling through a sphaleron. Existence of instantons with at least 8 parameters can be proven with the help of twisted boundary conditions in the time direction. Numerical results for SU(2) gauge theory obtained by cooling are presented to demonstrate the viability of the method.
