Global well-posedness of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with helical $L^1$ vorticity

We show that the Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb R^2\times\mathbb T$ are globally well posed for initial vorticities that are both helically symmetric and integrable. This class of data typically generates velocity fields of infinite kinetic energy, so this result is not covered by the classical finite-energy well-posedness theory. This result is supercritical from the perspective of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes scaling, and it is made possible by the special structure of helical flows using time-weighted Kato-type spaces.

On spiral steady flows for the Couette-Taylor problem

We investigate the Couette-Taylor problem for a steady incompressible viscous fluid in a 3D cylindrical annulus, where one of the two cylinders is still, under both Dirichlet and boundary conditions involving the vorticity that naturally appear in the weak formulation. The outcome of this study is twofold. First, we explicitly determine all the solutions with a specific geometric \emph{partial invariance}, which coincide with the so-called spiral Poiseuille or Poiseuille-Couette flows depending on the boundary conditions. Second, for small boundary data, we provide stability of such solutions, that is, no steady finite-energy perturbations are admissible. To achieve this result in presence of vorticity boundary conditions, we find a substantial analytical difference depending on which cylinder is still.

Pathological solutions of Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with gradients in Hardy spaces

For an arbitrary smooth initial datum, we construct multiple nonzero solutions to the $2$d Navier-Stokes equations, with their gradients in the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^p$ with any $p \in (0,1)$. Thus, in terms of the path space $C(\mathcal{H}^p)$ for vorticity, $p=1$ is the threshold value distinguishing between non-uniqueness and uniqueness regimes. In order to obtain our result, we develop the needed theory of Hardy spaces on periodic domains.

Dissipative Euler flows originating from circular vortex filaments

In this paper, we prove the first existence result of weak solutions to the 3D Euler equation with initial vorticity concentrated in a circle and velocity field in $C([0,T],L^{2^-})$. The energy becomes finite and decreasing for positive times, with vorticity concentrated in a ring that thickens and moves in the direction of the symmetry axis. With our approach, there is no need to mollify the initial data or to rescale the time variable. We overcome the singularity of the initial data by applying convex integration within the appropriate time-weighted space.

On the Cauchy problem for 3D Navier-Stokes helical vortex filament

This paper studies the Cauchy problem for a helical vortex filament evolving by the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We prove global-in-time well-posedness and smoothing of solutions with initial vorticity concentrated on a helix. We provide a local-in-time well-posedness result for vortex filaments periodic in one spatial direction, and show that solutions with helical initial data preserve this symmetry. We follow the approach of [4], where the analogue local-in-time result has been obtained for closed vortex filaments in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Next, we apply local energy weak solutions theory with a novel estimate for helical functions in non-helical domains to uniquely extend the solutions globally in time. This is the first global-in-time well-posedness result for a vortex filament without size restriction and without vanishing swirl assumptions.
