Exceptional Hahn and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials

Using Casorati determinants of Hahn polynomials $(h_n^{α,β,N})_n$, we construct for each pair $\F=(F_1,F_2)$ of finite sets of positive integers polynomials $h_n^{α,β,N;\F}$, $n\in σ_\F$, which are eigenfunctions of a second order difference operator, where $σ_\F$ is certain set of nonnegative integers, $σ_\F \varsubsetneq \NN$. When $N\in \NN$ and $α$, $β$, $N$ and $\F$ satisfy a suitable admissibility condition, we prove that the polynomials $h_n^{α,β,N;\F}$ are also orthogonal and complete with respect to a positive measure (exceptional Hahn polynomials). By passing to the limit, we transform the Casorati determinant of Hahn polynomials into a Wronskian type determinant of Jacobi polynomials $(P_n^{α,β})_n$. Under suitable conditions for $α$, $β$ and $\F$, these Wronskian type determinants turn out to be exceptional Jacobi polynomials.

Admissibility condition for exceptional Laguerre polynomials

We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the integrability of the weight associated to the exceptional Laguerre polynomials. This condition is very much related to the fact that the associated second order differential operator has no singularities in $(0,+\infty)$.

Constructing Krall-Hahn orthogonal polynomials

Given a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$, an algebra of operators $\mathcal A$ acting in the linear space of polynomials and an operator $D_p\in \mathcal A$ with $D_p(p_n)=θ_np_n$, where $θ_n$ is any arbitrary eigenvalue, we construct a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of $m+1$ consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+\sum_{j=1}^mβ_{n,j}p_{n-j}$. Using the concept of $\mathcal{D}$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequences $β_{n,j}, j=1,\ldots,m,$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are eigenfunctions of an operator in the algebra $\mathcal A$. As an application, from the classical discrete family of Hahn polynomials we construct orthogonal polynomials $(q_n)_n$ which are also eigenfunctions of higher-order difference operators.

Misfortunes of a mathematicians' trio using Computer Algebra Systems: Can we trust?

Computer algebra systems are a great help for mathematical research but sometimes unexpected errors in the software can also badly affect it. As an example, we show how we have detected an error of Mathematica computing determinants of matrices of integer numbers: not only it computes the determinants wrongly, but also it produces different results if one evaluates the same determinant twice.

Differential equations for discrete Laguerre-Sobolev orthogonal polynomials

The aim of this paper is to study differential properties of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a discrete Laguerre-Sobolev bilinear form with mass point at zero. In particular we construct the orthogonal polynomials using certain Casorati determinants. Using this construction, we prove that they are eigenfunctions of a differential operator (which will be explicitly constructed). Moreover, the order of this differential operator is explicitly computed in terms of the matrix which defines the discrete Laguerre-Sobolev bilinear form.

Using D-operators to construct orthogonal polynomials satisfying higher order q-difference equations

Let $(p_n)_n$ be either the $q$-Meixner or the $q$-Laguerre polynomials. We form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of two consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+β_np_{n-1}$, $β_n\in \RR$. Using the concept of $\D$-operator, we generate sequences $(β_n)_n$ for which the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are orthogonal with respect to a measure and common eigenfunctions of a higher order $q$-difference operator.

Constructing bispectral orthogonal polynomials from the classical discrete families of Charlier, Meixner and Krawtchouk

Given a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$, an algebra of operators $\mathcal{A}$ acting in the linear space of polynomials and an operator $D_p\in \mathcal{A}$ with $D_p(p_n)=np_n$, we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of $m$ consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+\sum_{j=1}^mβ_{n,j}p_{n-j}$. Using the concept of $\mathcal{D}$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequences $β_{n,j}, j=1,\ldots,m,$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are common eigenfunctions of an operator in the algebra $\mathcal{A}$. As an application, from the classical discrete families of Charlier, Meixner and Krawtchouk we construct orthogonal polynomials $(q_n)_n$ which are also eigenfunctions of higher order difference operators.

Wronskian type determinants of orthogonal polynomials, Selberg type formulas and constant term identities

Let $(p_n)_n$ be a sequence of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the measure $μ$. Let $T$ be a linear operator acting in the linear space of polynomials $\PP$ and satisfying that $\dgr(T(p))=\dgr(p)-1$, for all polynomial $p$. We then construct a sequence of polynomials $(s_n)_n$, depending on $T$ but not on $μ$, such that the Wronskian type $n\times n$ determinant $\det \left(T^{i-1}(p_{m+j-1}(x))\right)_{i,j=1}^n$ is equal to the $m\times m$ determinant $\det \left(q^{j-1}_{n+i-1}(x)\right)_{i,j=1}^m$, up to multiplicative constants, where the polynomials $q_n^i$, $n,i\ge 0$, are defined by $q_n^i(x)=\sum_{j=0}^nμ_j^is_{n-j}(x)$, and $μ_j^i$ are certain generalized moments of the measure $μ$. For $T=d/dx$ we recover a Theorem by Leclerc which extends the well-known Karlin and Szeg\H o identities for Hankel determinants whose entries are ultraspherical, Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. For $T=Δ$, the first order difference operator, we get some very elegant symmetries for Casorati determinants of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. We also show that for certain operators $T$, the second determinant above can be rewritten in terms of Selberg type integrals, and that for certain operators $T$ and certain families of orthogonal polynomials $(p_n)_n$, one (or both) of these determinants can also be rewritten as the constant term of certain multivariate Laurent expansions.

Using $\D$-operators to construct orthogonal polynomials satisfying higher order difference or differential equations

We introduce the concept of $\D$-operators associated to a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$ and an algebra $\A$ of operators acting in the linear space of polynomials. In this paper, we show that this concept is a powerful tool to generate families of orthogonal polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a higher order difference or differential operator. Indeed, given a classical discrete family $(p_n)_n$ of orthogonal polynomials (Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk or Hahn), we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of two consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+β_np_{n-1}$, $β_n\in \RR$. Using the concept of $\D$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequence $(β_n)_n$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are common eigenfunctions of a higher order difference operator. In addition, we generate sequences $(β_n)_n$ for which the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are also orthogonal with respect to a measure. The same approach is applied to the classical families of Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.

Orthogonal matrix polynomials satisfying differential equations with recurrence coefficients having non-scalar limits

We introduce a family of weight matrices $W$ of the form $T(t)T^*(t)$, $T(t)=e^{\mathscr{A}t}e^{\mathscr{D}t^2}$, where $\mathscr{A}$ is certain nilpotent matrix and $\mathscr{D}$ is a diagonal matrix with negative real entries. The weight matrices $W$ have arbitrary size $N\times N$ and depend on $N$ parameters. The orthogonal polynomials with respect to this family of weight matrices satisfy a second order differential equation with differential coefficients that are matrix polynomials $F_2$, $F_1$ and $F_0$ (independent of $n$) of degrees not bigger than 2, 1 and 0 respectively. For size $2\times 2$, we find an explicit expression for a sequence of orthonormal polynomials with respect to $W$. In particular, we show that one of the recurrence coefficients for this sequence of orthonormal polynomials does not asymptotically behave as a scalar multiple of the identity, as it happens in the examples studied up to now in the literature.

Fibonacci numbers, Euler's 2-periodic continued fractions and moment sequences

We prove that certain sequences of finite continued fractions associated with a 2-periodic continued fraction with period a,b>0 are moment sequences of discrete signed measures supported in the interval [-1,1], and we give necessary and sufficient conditions in order that these measures are positive. For a=b=1 this proves that the sequence of ratios F_{n+1}/F_{n+2}, n\ge 0 of consecutive Fibonacci numbers is a moment sequence.

Iteration of the rational function z-1/z and a Hausdorff moment sequence

In a previous paper we considered a positive function f, uniquely determined for s>0 by the requirements f(1)=1, log(1/f) is convex and the functional equation f(s)=psi(f(s+1)) with psi(s)=s-1/s. We prove that the meromorphic extension of f to the whole complex plane is given by the formula f(z)=lim_{n\to\infty}psi^{\circ n}(lambda_n(lambda_{n+1}/lambda_n)^z), where the numbers lambda_n are defined by lambda_0=0 and the recursion lambda_{n+1}=(1/2)(lambda_n+sqrt{lambda_n^2+4}). The numbers m_n=1/lambda_{n+1} form a Hausdorff moment sequence of a probability measure μsuch that \int t^{z-1}dμ(t)=1/f(z)

The fixed point for a transformation of Hausdorff moment sequences and iteration of a rational function

We study the fixed point for a non-linear transformation in the set of Hausdorff moment sequences, defined by the formula: $T((a_n))_n=1/(a_0+... +a_n)$. We determine the corresponding measure $μ$, which has an increasing and convex density on $]0,1[$, and we study some analytic functions related to it. The Mellin transform $F$ of $μ$ extends to a meromorphic function in the whole complex plane. It can be characterized in analogy with the Gamma function as the unique log-convex function on $]-1,\infty[$ satisfying $F(0)=1$ and the functional equation $1/F(s)=1/F(s+1)-F(s+1), s>-1$.

Orthogonal matrix polynomials and higher order recurrence relations

It is well-known that orthogonal polynomials on the real line satisfy a three-term recurrence relation and conversely every system of polynomials satisfying a three-term recurrence relation is orthogonal with respect to some positive Borel measure on the real line. In this paper we extend this result and show that every system of polynomials satisfying some $(2N+1)$-term recurrence relation can be expressed in terms of orthonormal matrix polynomials for which the coefficients are $N\times N$ matrices. We apply this result to polynomials orthogonal with respect to a discrete Sobolev inner product and other inner products in the linear space of polynomials. As an application we give a short proof of Krein's characterization of orthogonal polynomials with a spectrum having a finite number of accumulation points.
