Cosmological perturbations of TDiff fields

We study scalar field theories that break diffeomorphism invariance down to the subgroup of transverse diffeomorphisms through the matter sector in cosmological backgrounds. We focus on single- and multi-field models and develop the corresponding cosmological perturbation theory. We analyze the different contributions to the pressure perturbation, discussing the adiabaticity and the effects in the perturbation coefficients of the interactions that arise in the multi-field case as a consequence of the symmetry breaking. We also consider the stability of the perturbations in terms of the effective speed of sound and present particular models that could be of phenomenological interest.

The silent dark sector: a field-theory approach to unified dark fluids with vanishing speed of sound

We introduce a novel class of field-theory models that provide a unified description of the dark sector as a single perfect fluid with vanishing sound speed. These models also admit the interpretation of cold dark matter interacting with vacuum energy while avoiding any phantom behavior and including standard $Λ$CDM as a particular case. Built upon a single scalar field invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms, the framework naturally implements the constraints imposed in the so called mimetic models. We analyze a particular simple example exhibiting an effectively evolving dark energy and find that it can reproduce the DESI best-fit CPL evolution with the same number of free parameters.

Inflation in theories with broken diffeomorphisms

We analyze the impact of breaking diffeomorphism invariance in the inflaton sector. In particular, we consider inflaton models which are invariant under the subgroup of transverse diffeomorphisms and address the possibility of implementing a slow-roll phase. We obtain the corresponding expressions for relevant quantities such as the slow-roll parameters and the number of $e$-folds, and derive the primordial power-spectrum of curvature perturbations. The scalar spectral index features modifications which are confronted with CMB data from Planck and ACT. We study in detail the quadratic potential model, combining asymptotic and numerical analysis. We show that the post-inflationary behavior can be drastically different from the diffeomorphism-invariant case, exhibiting novel dynamical regimes.

J-PAS: forecast on the primordial power spectrum reconstruction

We investigate the capability of the J-PAS survey to constrain the primordial power spectrum using a non-parametric Bayesian method. Specifically, we analyze simulated power spectra generated by a local oscillatory primordial feature template motivated by non-standard inflation. The feature is placed within the range of scales where the signal-to-noise ratio is maximized, and we restrict the analysis to $k \in [0.02,0.2] \text{ h} \text{ Mpc}^{-1}$, set by the expected J-PAS coverage and the onset of non-linear effects. Each primordial power spectrum is reconstructed by linearly interpolating $N$ knots in the $\{\log k, \log P_{\mathcal{R}}(k)\}$ plane, which are sampled jointly with the cosmological parameters $\{H_0,Ω_b h^2, Ω_c h^2\}$ using PolyChord. To test the primordial features, we apply two statistical tools: the Bayes factor and a hypothesis test that localizes the scales where features are detected. We assess the recovery under different J-PAS specifications, including redshift binning, tracer type, survey area, and filter strategy. Our results show that combining redshift bins and tracers allows the detection of oscillatory features as small as 2\%.

Multifield theories invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms: The mixed regime case

We study theories breaking diffeomorphism (Diff) invariance down to the subgroup of transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff), consisting of multiple scalar fields in a cosmological background. In particular, we focus on models involving a field dominated by its kinetic term and a field dominated by its potential, coupled to gravity through power-law functions of the metric determinant. The Diff symmetry breaking results in the individual energy-momentum tensors not being conserved, although the total conservation-law is satisfied. Consequently, an energy exchange takes place between the fields, acting as an effective interaction between them. With this in mind, we consider the covariantized approach to describe the theory in a Diff invariant way but with an additional field, and discuss the phenomenological consequences of these models when it comes to the study of the dark sector.

K-nonizing

We unveil the dynamical equivalence of field theories with non-canonical kinetic terms and canonical theories with a volume element invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms. The proof of the equivalence also reveals a subtle connection between the standard Legendre transformation and the so-called Clairaut equation. Explicit examples of canonizable theories include classes of $k$-essence, non-linear electrodynamics, or $f(R)$ theories. The equivalence can also be extended to the class of mimetic theories.

J-PAS: Forecasting constraints on Neutrino Masses

The large-scale structure survey J-PAS is taking data since October 2023. In this work, we present a forecast based on the Fisher matrix method to establish its sensitivity to the sum of the neutrino masses. We adapt the Fisher Galaxy Survey Code (FARO) to account for the neutrino mass under various configurations applied to galaxy clustering measurements. This approach allows us to test the sensitivity of J-PAS to the neutrino mass across different tracers, with and without non-linear corrections, and under varying sky coverage. We perform our forecast for two cosmological models: $ΛCDM + \sum m_ν$ and $w_0w_a CDM + \sum m_ν$. We combine our J-PAS forecast with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from the Planck Collaboration and Type Ia supernova (SN) data from Pantheon Plus. Our analysis shows that, for a sky coverage of 8,500 square degrees, J-PAS galaxy clustering data alone will constrain the sum of the neutrino masses to an upper limit at 95% C.L of $\sum m_ν< 0.32$ eV for the $ΛCDM + \sum m_ν$ model, and $\sum m_ν< 0.36$ eV for the $w_0w_a CDM + \sum m_ν$ model. When combined with Planck data, the upper limit improves significantly. For J-PAS+Planck at 95% C.L, we find $\sum m_ν< 0.061$ eV for the $ΛCDM + \sum m_ν$ model, and for J-PAS+Planck+Pantheon Plus, we obtain $\sum m_ν< 0.12$ eV for the $w_0w_a CDM + \sum m_ν$ model. These results demonstrate that J-PAS clustering measurements can play a crucial role in addressing challenges in the neutrino sector, including potential tensions between cosmological and terrestrial measurements of the neutrino mass, as well as in determining the mass ordering.

$Λ$CDM from broken diffeomorphisms

We present a simple field theory model with reduced invariance under diffeomorphisms whose energy-momentum tensor is identical to the sum of pressureless irrotational matter and a cosmological constant. The model action is built from a single scalar field with a canonical kinetic term without any potential or Lagrange multiplier terms. The coupling to gravity is realized through a particular transverse diffeomorphism invariant volume element. The corresponding sound speed is exactly zero in any background geometry and the model is dynamically identical to $Λ$CDM. By restoring the full diffeomorphism invariance through the introduction of Stueckelberg-like fields, we obtain an equivalent local scalar-vector theory.

Multi-field TDiff theories for cosmology

We consider theories which break the invariance under diffeomorphisms (Diff) down to transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff) in the matter sector, consisting of multiple scalar fields. In particular, we regard shift-symmetric models with two free TDiff scalar fields in a flat Robertson-Walker spacetime (FLRW) and use the perfect fluid approach to study their dynamics. As a consequence of the symmetry breaking, an effective interaction between the fields is induced from the conservation of the total energy-momentum tensor, without the necessity to introduce any explicit interacting term in the Lagrangian. We study the different single-field domination regimes and analyze the energy exchange between the fields. Thereupon, we introduce an application of these models for the description of interactions in the dark sector, and compare the theoretical predictions of our model to observational data from Type Ia supernovae.

A class of ghost-free theories in symmetric teleparallel geometry

Theories formulated in the arena of teleparallel geometries are generically plagued by ghost-like instabilities or other pathologies that are ultimately caused by the breaking of some symmetries. In this work, we construct a class of ghost-free theories based on a symmetry under Transverse Diffeomorphisms that is naturally realised in symmetric teleparallelism. We explicitly show their equivalence to a family of theories with an extra scalar field plus a global degree of freedom and how Horndeski theories and healthy couplings to matter fields can be readily accommodated.

TDiff-fuelled cosmic magnetic fields

We explore the consequences of the breaking of diffeomorphism (Diff) invariance in the electromagnetic sector. We consider the breaking of Diff symmetry down to the subgroup of transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff) and analyse its impact on the generation and evolution of cosmic magnetic fields. We show that Diff breaking induces a breaking of conformal invariance that modifies the way in which magnetic fields evolve on super-Hubble scales. The effects of the highly conductive plasma in the evolution are also analysed. We obtain the magnetic power spectrum today and discuss the parameter regions that yield intergalactic magnetic fields compatible with current observations.

Symmetry restoration for TDiff scalar fields

We explore the idea of restoring the full diffeomorphism (Diff) invariance in theories with only transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff) by the introduction of additional fields. In particular, we consider in detail the case of a TDiff invariant scalar field and how Diff symmetry can be restored preserving locality by introducing an additional vector field. We reobtain the corresponding dynamics and energy-momentum tensor from the covariantized action and analyze the potential and kinetic domination regimes. For the former, the theory describes a cosmological constant-type behaviour, while for the latter we show that the theory can describe an adiabatic perfect fluid whose equation of state and speed of sound is obtained in a straightforward way. Furthermore, the reformulation with the full symmetry allows us to analyze the gravitational properties of the theory beyond those particular regimes. In particular, we find the general expression for the effective speed of sound of the non-adiabatic perfect fluid, which provides us with physically reasonable conditions that should be satisfied by the coupling functions. Finally, we investigate the particular models leading to an adiabatic fluid.

TDiff invariant gauge fields in cosmology

We study the dynamics of Abelian gauge fields invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff) in cosmological contexts. We show that in the geometric optics approximation, very much as for Diff invariant theories, the corresponding massless gauge bosons propagate along null geodesics and particle number is conserved. In addition, the polarization vectors are orthogonal to the propagation direction and the physical (transverse projection) polarization is parallel transported along the geodesics. We also consider TDiff invariant Dirac spinors, study the coupling to the gauge fields and analyze the conditions in order to avoid violations of Einstein's Equivalence Principle. The contributions to the energy-momentum tensor of the gauge field are also analyzed. We find that, in general, the breaking of Diff invariance makes the electric and magnetic parts of the vector field to gravitate in a different way. In the sub-Hubble regime we recover the standard radiation-like behaviour of the energy density, however in the super-Hubble regime the behaviour is totally different to the Diff case, thus opening up a wide range of possibilities for cosmological model building. In particular, possible effects on the evolution of large-scale primordial magnetic fields are discussed.

TDiff invariant field theories for cosmology

We study scalar field theories invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms in cosmological contexts. We show that in the geometric optics approximation, the corresponding particles move along geodesics and contribute with the same active mass (energy) to the gravitational field as in Diff invariant theories. However, for low-frequency (super-Hubble) modes, the contributions to the energy-momentum tensor differ from that of Diff invariant theories. This opens up a wide range of possibilities for cosmological model building. As an example, we show that the simplest TDiff invariant scalar field theory with only kinetic term could drive inflation and generate a nearly scale invariant (red-tilted) spectrum of density fluctuations. We also present a detailed analysis of cosmological perturbations and show that the breaking of full Diff invariance generically induces new non-adiabatic pressure perturbations. A simple scalar field dark matter model based on a purely kinetic term that exhibits the same clustering properties as standard cold dark matter is also presented.

TDiff in the Dark: Gravity with a scalar field invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms

We reflect on the possibility of having a matter action that is invariant only under transverse diffeomorphisms. This possibility is particularly interesting for the dark sector, where no restrictions arise based on the weak equivalence principle. In order to implement this idea we consider a scalar field which couples to gravity minimally but via arbitrary functions of the metric determinant. We show that the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field takes the perfect fluid form when its velocity vector is time-like. We analyze the conservation of this tensor in detail, obtaining a seminal novel result for the energy density of this field in the kinetic dominated regime. Indeed, in this regime the fluid is always adiabatic and we obtain an explicit expression for the speed of sound. Furthermore, to get insight in the gravitational properties of these theories, we consider the fulfillment of the energy conditions, concluding that nontrivial physically reasonable matter violates the strong energy condition in the potential domination regime. On the other hand, we present some shift-symmetric models of particular interest. These are: constant equation of state models (which may provide us with a successful description of dark matter or dark radiation) and models presenting different gravitational domains (characterized by the focusing or possible defocusing of time-like geodesics), as it happens in unified dark matter-energy models.

A unified TDiff invariant field theory for the dark sector

In this work we present a unified model for the cosmological dark sector. The theory is based on a simple minimally coupled scalar field whose action only contains a canonical kinetic term and is invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff). The model has the same number of free parameters as $Λ$CDM. We confront the predictions of the model at the background level with data from Planck 2018 CMB distance priors, Pantheon+ and SH0ES SNIa distance moduli, BAO data points from 6dFGS, BOSS, eBOSS and DES and measurements of the Hubble parameter from cosmic chronometers. The model provides excellent results in the joint fit analysis, showing very strong evidence compared to $Λ$CDM in the deviance information criterion (DIC). We also show that the Hubble tension between Planck 2018 and SH0ES measurements can be alleviated in the unified TDiff model although further analysis is still needed.

Cosmology in gravity models with broken diffeomorphisms

We study the cosmological implications of gravity models which break diffeomorphisms (Diff) invariance down to transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff). We start from the most general gravitational action involving up to quadratic terms in derivatives of the metric tensor and identify TDiff models as the only stable theories consistent with local gravity tests. These models propagate an additional scalar graviton and although they are indistinguishable from GR at the post-Newtonian level, their cosmological dynamics exhibits a rich phenomenology. Thus we show that the model includes standard $Λ$CDM as a solution when the extra scalar mode is not excited, but different cosmological evolutions driven by the new term are possible. In particular, we show that for a soft Diff breaking, the new contribution always behaves as a cosmological constant at late times. When the extra contribution is not negligible, generically its evolution either behaves as dark energy or tracks the dominant background component. Depending on the initial conditions, solutions in which the universe evolves from an expanding to a contracting phase, eventually recollapsing are also possible.

Gravitational leptogenesis from metric perturbations

In this work we make the observation that the gravitational leptogenesis mechanism can be implemented without invoking new axial couplings in the inflaton sector. We show that in the perturbed Robertson-Walker background emerging after inflation, the spacetime metric itself breaks parity symmetry and generates a non-vansihing Pontryagin density which can produce a matter-antimatter asymmetry. We analyze the produced asymmetry in different inflationary and reheating scenarios. We show that the generated asymmetry can be locally comparable to observations in certain cases, although the size of the matter-antimatter regions is typically much smaller than the present Hubble radius.
