Blown-up toric surfaces with non-polyhedral effective cone

We construct examples of projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone, both in characteristic $0$ and in every prime characteristic $p$. As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space $\overline M_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for $n\geq 10$ in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for all primes $p$. Many of these toric surfaces are related to a very interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. Their analysis in characteristic $p$ relies on tools of arithmetic geometry and Galois representations in the spirit of the Lang-Trotter conjecture, producing toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for an infinite set of primes $p$ of positive density.

Decomposition algorithms for tensors and polynomials

We give algorithms to compute decompositions of a given polynomial, or more generally mixed tensor, as sum of rank one tensors, and to establish whether such a decomposition is unique. In particular, we present methods to compute the decomposition of a general plane quintic in seven powers, and of a general space cubic in five powers; the two decompositions of a general plane sextic of rank nine, and the five decompositions of a general plane septic. Furthermore, we give Magma implementations of all our algorithms.

Lines on cubic hypersurfaces over finite fields

We show that smooth cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ defined over a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ contain a line defined over ${\bf F}_q$ in each of the following cases: - $n=3$ and $q\ge 11$; - $n=4$ and $q\ne 3$; - $n\ge 5$. For a smooth cubic threefold $X$, the variety of lines contained in $X$ is a smooth projective surface $F(X)$ for which the Tate conjecture holds, and we obtain information about the Picard number of $F(X)$ and its 5-dimensional principally polarized Albanese variety $A(F(X))$.

Chilean configuration of conics, lines and points

Using the theory of rational elliptic fibrations, we construct and discuss a one parameter family of configurations of $12$ conics and $9$ points in the projective plane that realizes an abstract configuration $(12_6,9_8)$. This is analogous to the famous Hesse configuration of $12$ lines and $9$ points forming an abstract configuration $(12_3,9_4)$. We also show that any Halphen elliptic fibration of index $2$ with four triangular singular fibers arises from such configuration of conics.

On base loci of higher fundamental forms of toric varieties

We study the base locus of the higher fundamental forms of a projective toric variety $X$ at a general point. More precisely we consider the closure $X$ of the image of a map $({\mathbb C}^*)^k\to {\mathbb P}^n$, sending $t$ to the vector of Laurent monomials with exponents $p_0,\dots,p_n\in {\mathbb Z}^k$. We prove that the $m$-th fundamental form of such an $X$ at a general point has non empty base locus if and only if the points $p_i$ lie on a suitable degree-$m$ affine hypersurface. We then restrict to the case in which the points $p_i$ are all the lattice points of a lattice polytope and we give some applications of the above result. In particular we provide a classification for the second fundamental forms on toric surfaces, and we also give some new examples of weighted $3$-dimensional projective spaces whose blowing up at a general point is not Mori dream.

On Mori chamber and stable base locus decompositions

The effective cone of a Mori dream space admits two wall-and-chamber decompositions called Mori chamber and stable base locus decompositions. In general the former is a non trivial refinement of the latter. We investigate, from both the geometrical and the combinatorial viewpoints, the differences between these decompositions. Furthermore, we provide a criterion to establish whether the two decompositions coincide for a Mori dream space of Picard rank two, and we construct an explicit example of a Mori dream space of Picard rank two for which the decompositions are different, showing that our criterion is sharp. Finally, we classify the smooth toric 3-folds of Picard rank three for which the two decompositions are different.

Cox rings of K3 surfaces of Picard number three

Let $X$ be a projective K3 surface over $\mathbb C$. We prove that its Cox ring $R(X)$ has a generating set whose degrees are either classes of smooth rational curves, sums of at most three elements of the Hilbert basis of the nef cone, or of the form $2(f+f')$, where $f,f'$ are classes of elliptic fibrations with $f\cdot f'=2$. This result and techniques using Koszul's type exact sequences allow to determine a generating set for the Cox ring of all Mori dream K3 surfaces of Picard number three which is minimal in most cases. A presentation for the Cox ring is given in some special cases with few generators.

Cox ring of the generic fiber

Given a surjective morphism $π\colon X\to Y$ of normal varieties satisfying some regularity hypotheses we prove how to recover a Cox ring of the generic fiber of $π$ from the Cox ring of $X$. As a corollary we show that in some cases it is also possible to recover the Cox ring of a very general fiber, and finally we give an application in the case of the blowing-up of a toric fiber space.

Fundamental group of log terminal T-varieties

In this article, we introduce an approach to study the fundamental group of a log terminal T-variety. As applications, we prove the simply connectedness of the spectrum of the Cox ring of a complex Fano variety, we compute the fundamental group of a rational log terminal T-varieties of complexity one, and we study the local fundamental group of log terminal T-singularities with a good torus action and trivial GIT decomposition.

On the topology of rational T-varieties of complexity one

We generalize classical results about the topology of toric varieties to the case of projective Q-factorial T-varieties of complexity one using the language of divisorial fans. We describe the Hodge-Deligne polynomial in the smooth case, the cohomology ring and the Chow ring in the contraction-free case.

On deformations of toric varieties

Let X be a smooth complete toric variety. We describe the Altmann-Ilten-Vollmert equivariant deformations of toric varieties in the language of Cox rings. More precisely we construct one parameters families of deformations of X, such that the total space of the deformation is a T-variety of complexity one defined by a trinomial equation, and the deformation map is equivariant with respect to the torus action. Moreover we show that the images of all these families via the Kodaira-Spencer map form a basis of the vector space H1(X,T_X).

On blowing up the weighted projective plane

We investigate the blow-up of a weighted projective plane at a general point. We provide criteria and algorithms for testing if the result is a Mori dream surface and we compute the Cox ring in several cases. Moreover applications to the study of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ are discussed.

Linear systems on the blow-up of (P^1)^n

In this note we study linear systems on the blow-up of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ at $r$ points in very general position. We prove that the fibers of the projections $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n \rightarrow (\mathbb{P}^1)^s, 1\leq s \leq n-1$ can give contribution to the speciality of the linear system. This allows us to give a new definition of expected dimension of a linear system in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ which we call fiber dimension. Finally, we state a conjecture about linear systems on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$.

On del Pezzo elliptic varieties of degree $\leq 4$

\special{html: } Let $Y$ be a del Pezzo variety of degree $d\leq 4$ and dimension $n\geq 3$, let $H$ be an ample class such that $-K_Y=(n-1)H$ and let $Z\subset Y$ be a $0$-dimensional subscheme of length $d$ such that the subsystem of elements of $|H|$ with base locus $Z$ gives a rational morphism $π_Z\colon Y\dashrightarrow{\mathbb P}^{n-1}$. Denote by $π\colon X\to {\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ the elliptic fibration obtained by resolving the indeterminacy locus of $π_Z$. Extending the results of [arXiv:1305.3340] we study the geometry of the variety $X$ and we prove that the Mordell-Weil group of $π$ is finite if and only if the Cox ring of $X$ is finitely generated.

On minimal rational elliptic surfaces

We construct $13$ projective $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Fano toric varieties and show that for any minimal rational elliptic surface $X$ there is one such toric variety $Z_X$ and a divisor class $δ_X\in {\rm Cl}(Z_X)$ such that the number of $(-1)$-curves of $X$ equals the dimension of the Riemann-Roch space of $δ_X$. As an application we give the number of $(-1)$-curves of any such elliptic fibration of Halphen index $2$.

Cox rings of cubic surfaces and Fano threefolds

We determine the Cox rings of the minimal resolutions of cubic surfaces with at most rational double points, of blow ups of the projective plane at non-general configurations of six points and of three dimensional smooth Fano varieties of Picard numbers one and two.
