Spin effects in the particle current of Bose-Einstein condensates in synthetic gauge fields

Spin reveals the rotational features of a system independently of its state of motion. Hence, it is not a relativistic quantity, despite giving rise to effects that emerge naturally from relativistic equations only. Within a non-relativistic framework these effects are not inherently captured, and have to be added by resorting to symmetry principles or to the asymptotic limit of the corresponding relativistic framework. We report on one of these effects: the divergenceless spin term in the particle current density of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. It could be observed in the setup of a synthetic Hall system made with non-relativistic pseudospin-1/2 bosonic particles. By tuning the interaction strength, the system can show how the spin term in the particle current is needed for the local matching of classical drift velocity in the ground state of the non-interacting system, whereas for increasing interparticle interactions the spin-to-orbital current ratio decreases. In either case, since the overall particle velocity changes with the spin term contribution, so does its circulation in a loop, which in turn has physical consequences for its relationship with the Aharonov-Bohm phase shift.

Hysteresis loops in spinor BECs subject to synthetic gauge fields

We explore the hysteretic dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms loaded in static 2D ring geometries and subjected to varying synthetic magnetic fields. Electrically neutral, pseudo-spin-$1/2$ condensates are probed by one-component weak-link potentials that make available paths for the transit of vortices into and out of the ring in both components, and thus can control the number of flux quanta threading the ring hole. For perpendicular fields, domain walls that are dynamically generated in the relative phase of the spin components are shown to play a key role in driving the hysteretic behaviour of the whole system through changes in the net magnetic flux. In the presence of spin-orbit-coupling, hysteresis is exhibited around the phase transitions found by the metastable current states for varying fields.

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions

Recently achieved chiral condensates open intriguing avenues for the study of the chiral properties induced by current-density interactions. An attempt to include these features in a spinor system is presented, which gives rise to a nonlinear, effective spin-orbit coupling that emerges from the differential orbital currents, along with constraints in the conserved quantities due to the linear coupling between spin components. Chirality pervades the resulting spectrum of stationary states and their dynamical stability, which are explored in plane waves, dark and bright solitons, and Josephson vortices. Our analytical and numerical results reveal the destabilizing role of polarization and Josephson currents, and support the existence of stable nonlinear states built of linear superpositions of plane waves.

Superfluid rings as quantum pendulums

A feasible experimental proposal to realize a non-dispersive quantum pendulum is presented. The proposed setup consists of an ultracold atomic cloud, featuring attractive interatomic interactions, loaded into a tilted ring potential. The classical and quantum domains are switched on by tuned interactions, and the classical dynamical stabilization of unstable states, i.e. {\it a la} Kapitza, is shown to be driven by quantum phase imprinting. The potential use of this system as a gravimeter is discussed.

Gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch states in Bose-Einstein condensates with current-dependent interactions

We show how the chiral properties of Bose Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions and loaded in optical lattices can be observed in the realization of nonlinear Bloch states, whose spectrum lacks the usual periodic structure. Chirality is also manifested by spatially localized states, or gap solitons, which are found for positive rotation rates of the lattice at the energy gaps between the linear energy bands, whereas for negative rotations they appear in the semi-infinite gap of the linear spectrum. The stability of extended and localized states is checked through the spectrum of linear excitations and nonlinear time evolution of perturbed states, and the phenomenon of Bloch oscillations is explored. Our results are obtained in quasi 1D ring geometries with feasible experimental parameters.

Chiral currents in Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions

Persistent currents in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates become chiral in the presence of current-density interactions. This phenomenon is explored in ultracold atoms loaded in a rotating ring geometry, where diverse current-carrying stationary states are analytically found to generalize previously known solutions to the mean-field equations of motion. Their dynamical stability is tested by numerical simulations that show stable currents for states with both constant and modulated density profiles, while decaying currents appear only beyond a unidirectional velocity threshold. Recent experiments in the field make these states within experimental reach.

Soliton collisions in Bose-Einstein condensates with current-dependent interactions

We study general collisions between chiral solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates subject to combined attractive and current-dependent interatomic interactions. A simple analysis based on the linear superposition of the solitons allows us to determine the relevant time and space scales of the dynamics, which is illustrated by extensive numerical simulations. By varying the differential amplitude, the relative phase, the average velocity, and the relative velocity of the solitons, we characterize the different dynamical regimes that give rise to oscillatory and interference phenomena. Apart from the known inelastic character of the collisions, we show that the chiral dynamics involves an amplitude reduction with respect to the case of regular solitons. To compare with feasible ultracold gas experiments, the influence of harmonic confinement is analyzed in both the emergence and the interaction of chiral solitons.

Two types of dark solitons in a spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas

Dark solitons in quantum fluids are well known nonlinear excitations that are usually characterized by a single length scale associated with the underlying background fluid. We show that in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and a linear Zeeman field, superfluid Fermi gases support two different types of nonlinear excitations featured by corresponding length scales related to the existence of two Fermi surfaces. Only one of these types, which occurs for finite spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman field, survives to the topological phase transition, and is therefore capable to sustain Majorana zero modes. At the point of the emergence of this soliton for varying the Zeeman field, the associated Andreev bound states present a minigap that vanishes for practical purposes, in spite of lacking the reality condition of Majorana modes.

Stripe and junction-vortex phases in linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Soon after its theoretical prediction, striped-density states in the presence of synthetic spin-orbit coupling were realized in Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold neutral atoms [J.-R. Li et al., Nature \textbf{543}, 91 (2017)]. The achievement opens avenues to explore the interplay of superfluidity and crystalline order in the search for supersolid features and materials. The system considered is essentially made of two linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, that is a pseudo-spin-$1/2$ system, subject to a spin-dependent gauge field $σ_z \hbar k_\ell$. Under these conditions the stripe phase is achieved when the linear coupling $\hbarΩ/2$ is small against the gauge energy $mΩ/\hbar k_\ell^2<1$ . The resulting density stripes have been interpreted as a standing-wave, interference pattern with approximate wavenumber $2k_\ell$. Here, we show that the emergence of the stripe phase is induced by an array of Josephson vortices living in the junction defined by the linear coupling. As happens in superconducting junctions subject to external magnetic fields, a vortex array is the natural response of the superfluid system to the presence of a gauge field. Also similar to superconductors, the Josephson currents and their associated vortices can be present as a metastable state in the absence of gauge field. We provide closed-form solutions to the 1D mean field equations that account for such vortex arrays. The underlying Josephson currents coincide with the analytical solutions to the sine-Gordon equation for the relative phase of superconducting junctions [C. Owen and D. Scalapino, Phys. Rev. \textbf{164}, 538 (1967)].

Tunneling vortex dynamics in linearly coupled Bose-Hubbard rings

The quantum dynamics of population-balanced fractional vortices and population-imbalanced vortices in an effective two-state bosonic system, made of two coupled discrete circuits with few sites, is addressed within the Bose-Hubbard model. % We show that for low on-site interaction, the tunneling of quantized vortices between the rings performs a coherent, oscillating dynamics connecting current states with chiral symmetry. The vortex-flux transfer dually follows the usual sinusoidal particle current of the Josephson effect, in good agreement with a mean-field approximation. Within such regime, the switch of persistent currents in the rings resembles flux-qubit features, and is feasible to experimental realization. On the contrary, strong interatomic interactions suppress the chiral current and lead the system into fragmented condensation.

Unlocked-relative-phase states in arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates

Phase engineering techniques are used to control the dynamics of long-bosonic-Josephson-junction arrays built by linearly coupling Bose-Einstein condensates. Just at the middle point of the underlying discrete energy band of the system, unlocked-relative-phase states are shown to be stationary along with the locked-relative-phase Bloch waves. In finite, experimentally-feasible systems, such states find ranges of dynamical stability that depend on the ratio of coupling to interaction energy. The same ratio determines different decay regimes, which include the recurrence of staggered-soliton trains in the condensates around Josephson loop currents at the junctions. These transient solitons are also found in their stationary configurations, which provide striped-density states by means of either dark-soliton or bright-soliton trains. Additionally, the preparation of maximally out-of-phase (or splay) states is demonstrated to evolve into an oscillation of the uniform density of the condensates that keeps constant the total density of the system and robust against noise at low coupling.

Nonlinear standing waves in an array of coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Stationary solitary waves are studied in an array of $M$ linearly-coupled one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Solitary wave solutions with the character of overlapping dark solitons, Josephson vortex - antivortex arrays, and arrays of half-dark solitons are constructed for $M>2$ from known solutions for two coupled BECs. Additional solutions resembling vortex dipoles and rarefaction pulses are found numerically. Stability analysis of the solitary waves reveals that overlapping dark solitons can become unstable and susceptible to decay into arrays of Josephson vortices. The Josephson vortex arrays have mixed stability but for all parameters we find at least one stationary solitary wave configuration that is dynamically stable. The different families of nonlinear standing waves bifurcate from one another. In particular we demonstrate that Josephson-vortex arrays bifurcate from dark soliton solutions at instability thresholds. The stability thresholds for dark soliton and Josephson-vortex type solutions are provided, suggesting the feasibility of realization with optical lattice experiments.

Stability and dispersion relations of three-dimensional solitary waves in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyse the dynamical properties of three-dimensional solitary waves in cylindrically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Families of solitary waves bifurcate from the planar dark soliton and include the solitonic vortex, the vortex ring and more complex structures of intersecting vortex-line known collectively as Chladni solitons. The particle-like dynamics of these guided solitary waves provides potentially profitable features for their implementation in atomtronic circuits, and play a key role in the generation of metastable loop currents. Based on the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we calculate the dispersion relations of moving solitary waves and their modes of dynamical instability. The dispersion relations reveal a complex crossing and bifurcation scenario. For stationary structures we find that for $μ/\hbarω_\perp > 2.65$ the solitonic vortex is the only stable solitary wave. More complex Chladni solitons still have weaker instabilities than planar dark solitons and may be seen as transient structures in experiments. Fully time-dependent simulations illustrate typical decay scenarios, which may result in the generation of multiple separated solitonic vortices.
