Particle production as a function of the underlying event in pp collisions simulated with PYTHIA 8

In this work we present the production of charged particles associated with high-$p_{\rm T}$ trigger particles ($8<p_{\rm T}^{\rm trig.}<15$ GeV /$c$) at mid-pseudorapidity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$\,TeV simulated with the \textsc{PYTHIA 8} Monte Carlo model. The study is performed as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier, $R_{\rm T}$, which is the relative charged-particle multiplicity in the transverse region ($π/3 <|Δϕ| <2π/3$) of the di-hadron correlations, and it is sensitive to the Multi-Parton Interactions. The evolution of the yield of associated particles on both the toward and the away regions with $3\leq p_{\rm T}^{\rm assoc.}<8$ GeV/$c$ as a function of $R_{\rm T}$ is investigated. We propose a strategy which allows for the modelling and subtraction of the Underlying Event (UE) contribution from the toward and the away regions in challenging environments like those characterised by large $R_{\rm T}$. We found that the signal in the away region becomes broader with increasing $R_{\rm T}$. Contrarily, the yield increases with $R_{\rm T}$ in the toward region. This effect is reminiscent of that seen in heavy-ion collisions, where an enhancement of the yield in the toward region for $0-5\%$ central Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{\rm NN}=2.76$\,TeV was reported. To further understand the role of the UE and additional jet activity, the transverse region is divided into two one-sided sectors, "trans-max" and "trans-min" selected in each event according to which region has larger or smaller charged particle multiplicity. Based on this selection criterion, the observables are studied as a function of $R_{\rm T}^{\rm max}$ and $R_{\rm T}^{\rm min}$, respectively. The presented results have been published in J. Phys. G 48, no.1, 015007 (2020) and Phys. Rev. D 104, no.1, 016017 (2021).

Probing the interaction of semi-hard quarks and gluons with the underlying event in light- and heavy-flavor triggered proton-proton collisions

We study underlying-event observables in inelastic proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with identified light and heavy-flavor triggers using the PYTHIA 8 event generator. The study is performed as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading particle ($p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}$). While at high $p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}$ ($>10$ GeV/$c$) the underlying-event activity is independent of the leading particle species, at intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}$ ($2<p_\mathrm{T}^{\rm trigger}<8$ GeV/$c$) it is larger in pion-triggered events than in events triggered with B mesons. Moreover, the underlying event in pion-triggered events, the majority of which are initiated by gluons, shows a stronger effect of color reconnection than events triggered with B-hadrons, that are mostly initiated by quark jets. The effect is observed at both hadronic and partonic level. Given that color reconnection affects the interaction among final partons before the hadronization, and that in the string model quarks (gluons) are connected to one (two) string piece(s), we conclude that the observed effect can be attributed to differences in the interactions of gluon and quark jets with the underlying event.

Disentangling the hard gluon Bremsstrahlung effects from the relative transverse activity classifier in pp collisions

Recently, the so-called relative transverse activity classifier, $R_{\rm T}$, has been proposed as a tool to disentangle the particle production originated from the soft and hard QCD processes in proton-proton (pp) collisions. $R_{\rm T}$ is a useful quantity to study particle production in events with exceptionally large or small activity in the transverse region with respect to the event-averaged mean. Contrary to the expectations, the preliminary results of the ALICE Collaboration indicate that, e.g., the proton-to-pion ratio does not exhibit the characteristic enhancement at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$ in events with large $R_{\rm T}$ with respect to minimum-bias pp collisions. In this work, we investigate the origin of this effect using the PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7 Monte Carlo event generators. The effect is a consequence of a selection bias attributed to wide-angle gluon emissions which creates jets that populate the transverse region. Therefore, we propose a modified version of $R_{\rm T}$ in order to suppress its sensitivity to hard gluon Bremsstrahlung, and enhance the sensitivity to soft Multiparton Interactions (MPI). This approach could be useful in order to study the particle production in the jet-like region as a function of MPI. The implementation of these ideas in data will provide more insight into the production mechanisms of hadrons in high-multiplicity pp collisions, and its connection with heavy-ion phenomena.

Study of Transverse Spherocity and Azimuthal Anisotropy in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV using A Multi-Phase Transport Model

Transverse spherocity is an event shape observable having a very unique capability to separate the events based on their geometrical shapes. Recent results from experiments at the LHC suggest that transverse spherocity is an important event classifier in small collision systems. In this work, we use transverse spherocity for the first time in heavy-ion collisions and perform an extensive study on azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV using A Multi-Phase Transport Model (AMPT). The azimuthal anisotropy is estimated using the 2-particle correlation method, which suppresses the non-flow effects significantly with an appropriate pseudorapidity gap of particle pairs. The results from AMPT are compared with estimations from PYTHIA8 (Angantyr) model and it is found that with the chosen pseudorapidity gap the residual non-flow effects become negligible. We found that the high spherocity events have nearly zero elliptic flow while low spherocity events contribute significantly to elliptic flow of spherocity-integrated events. Our studies indicate that using transverse spherocity in heavy-ion collisions, one can enhance and/or suppress the collective effects.

Extraction of the multiplicity dependence of Multiparton Interactions from LHC pp data using Machine Learning techniques

Over the last years, Machine Learning (ML) methods have been successfully applied to a wealth of problems in high-energy physics. For instance, in a previous work we have reported that using ML techniques one can extract the Multiparton Interactions (MPI) activity from minimum-bias pp data. Using the available LHC data on transverse momentum spectra as a function of multiplicity, we reported the average number of MPI ($\langle N_{\rm mpi} \rangle$) for minimum-bias pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13\,TeV. In this work, we apply the same analysis to a new set of data. We report that $\langle N_{\rm mpi} \rangle$ amounts to $3.98 \pm 1.01$ for minimum-bias pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$\,TeV. These complementary results suggest a modest center-of-mass energy dependence of $\langle N_{\rm mpi} \rangle$. The study is further extended aimed at extracting the multiplicity dependence of $\langle N_{\rm mpi} \rangle$ for the three center-of-mass energies. We show that our results qualitatively agree with existing ALICE measurements sensitive to MPI. Namely, $\langle N_{\rm mpi} \rangle$ increases approximately linearly with the charged-particle multiplicity. But, it deviates from the linear dependence at large charged-particle multiplicities. The deviation from the linear trend can be explained in terms of a bias towards harder processes given the multiplicity selection at mid-pseudorapidity. The results reported in this paper provide additional evidence of the presence of MPI in pp collisions, and they can be useful for a better understanding of the heavy-ion-like behaviour observed in pp data.

Apparent modification of the jet-like yield in proton-proton collisions with large underlying event

This paper presents the production of charged particles associated with high-$p_{\rm T}$ trigger particles ($8<p_{\rm T}^{\rm trig.}<15$ GeV/$c$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV simulated with PYTHIA 8.244. The study is performed as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier, $R_{\rm T}$, which is the relative charged-particle multiplicity in the transverse region ($π/3<|ϕ^{\rm trig.}-ϕ^{\rm assoc.}|<2π/3$) of the di-hadron correlations, and it is sensitive to the Multi-Parton Interactions. The evolution of both the near and the away-side yield of associated particles ($3\leq p_{\rm T}^{\rm assoc.}< 8$ GeV/$c$) as a function of $R_{\rm T}$ is investigated. We propose a strategy which allows for the modelling and subtraction of the underlying event contribution from the near and the away side in challenging environments like those characterised by large $R_{\rm T}$. We found that the away-side signal becomes broader with increasing $R_{\rm T}$, while its corresponding yield is independent of $R_{\rm T}$. Contrarily, the near-side yield increases with $R_{\rm T}$. This effect is reminiscent of that seen in heavy-ion collisions, where an enhancement in the near-side yield for 0-5% central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV was reported. A discussion on the origin of these effects in PYTHIA, as well as their implications for the interpretation of recent LHC results for pp collisions, is presented.

Multi-Parton Interactions in pp collisions from Machine Learning-based regression

Multi-Parton Interactions (MPI) in pp collisions have attracted the attention of the heavy-ion community since they can help to elucidate the origin of collective-like effects discovered in small collision systems at the LHC. In this work, we report that in PYTHIA 8.244, the charged-particle production in events with a large number of MPI (${\rm N}_{\rm mpi}$) normalized to that obtained in minimum-bias pp collisions shows interesting features. After the normalization to the corresponding $\langle {\rm N}_{\rm mpi} \rangle$, the ratios as a function of $p_{\rm T}$ exhibit a bump at $p_{\rm T}\approx3$ GeV/$c$; and for higher $p_{\rm T}$ ($>8$ GeV/$c$), the ratios are independent of ${\rm N}_{\rm mpi}$. While the size of the bump increases with increasing ${\rm N}_{\rm mpi}$, the behavior at high $p_{\rm T}$ is expected from the "binary scaling" (parton-parton interactions), which holds given the absence of any parton-energy loss mechanism in PYTHIA. The bump at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$ is reminiscent of the Cronin effect observed for the nuclear modification factor in p--Pb collisions. In order to unveil these effects in data, we propose a strategy to construct an event classifier sensitive to MPI using Machine Learning-based regression. The study is conducted using TMVA, and the regression is performed with Boosted Decision Trees (BDT). Event properties like forward charged-particle multiplicity, transverse spherocity and the average transverse momentum ($\langle p_{\rm T} \rangle$) are used for training. The kinematic cuts are defined in accordance with the ALICE detector capabilities. In addition, we also report that if we apply the trained BDT on existing (${\rm INEL}>0$) pp data, i.e. events with at least one primary charged-particle within $|η|<1$, the average number of MPI in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13 TeV are 3.76$\pm1.01$ and 4.65$\pm1.01$, respectively.

First implementation of transverse spherocity analysis for heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider energies

Transverse spherocity, an event shape observable, has a very unique capability to separate the events based on their geometrical shape, i.e. jetty and isotropic. In this work, we use transverse spherocity for the first time in heavy-ion collisions using A Multi-Phase Transport Model (AMPT). We obtain the transverse momentum spectra, integrated yield, mean transverse momentum and azimuthal anisotropy for identified particles in Xe-Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.44$ TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV. The indication of collectivity in heavy-ion collisions can be clearly seen while comparing the transverse momentum spectra from jetty and isotropic events. The elliptic flow as a function of transverse spherocity shows that the isotropic events have nearly zero elliptic flow and the elliptic flow is mostly dominated by the jetty events. This study will pave a way to focus on jetty events in heavy-ion collisions in order to investigate jet medium modification and jet hadro-chemistry in a sophisticated manner.

Particle production and flow-like effects in small systems

Particle production in small systems (pp and p-Pb collisions) has unveiled unexpected collective-like behavior. In this work an overview of the current investigation on the similarities between small systems and heavy-ion collisions is presented. Recent results from the experiments at the LHC are discussed. They include measurements of multi-particle correlations, as well as, identified particle production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density, and more recently, as a function of transverse spherocity.

Intriguing similarities between high-$p_{\rm T}$ particle production in pp and A-A collisions

In this paper we study the particle production at high transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}>8$ GeV/$c$) in both pp and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. The characterization of the spectra is done using a power-law function and the resulting power-law exponent ($n$) is studied as a function of $x_{\rm T}$ for minimum-bias pp collisions at different $\sqrt{s}$. The functional form of $n$ as a function of $x_{\rm T}$ exhibits an approximate universal behavior. PYTHIA~8.212 reproduces the scaling properties and therefore, it is used to study the multiplicity-dependent particle production. Going from low to high multiplicities, the power-law exponent decreases. A similar behavior is also observed in heavy-ion collisions when one studies the centrality-dependent particle production. The interpretation of heavy-ion results requires the quantification of the impact of this correlation (multiplicity and high $p_{\rm T}$) on jet-quenching observables.

Probing color reconnection with underlying event observables at the LHC energies

In this work we study the underlying event (UE) activity as a function of the highest jet transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}^{\rm jet}$) in terms of the number and summed $p_{\rm T}$ densities of charged particles in the azimuthal region transverse to the $p_{\rm T}^{\rm jet}$ direction. The UE observables normalised to the INEL multiplicity obey an approximate Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling. Based on PYTHIA~8.2 simulations of $pp$ collisions at LHC energies, we show that the remaining imperfection of the KNO scaling is due to the increasing importance of multiple partonic interactions (MPI) at higher $\sqrt{s}$. Motivated by this, we studied the UE activity considering charged particles within different $p_{\rm T}$ intervals in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$\,TeV. We demonstrate that the saturations of both number and summed $p_{\rm T}$ densities, which are commonly claimed, are only observed for low-\pt charged particles ($0.5 0.5$\,GeV/$c$) the summed $p_{\rm T}$ density is not sensitive to the variation of color reconnection (CR), however at low-p_{\rm T} it is reduced with increasing CR, whereas an opposite behaviour is found at intermediate-$p_{\rm T}$ ($2<p_{\rm T}<10$\,GeV/$c$). Finally, we show that CR produces flow-like behaviour only in the UE region and the effects are reduced with increasing $p_{\rm T}^{\rm jet}$ due to the hardering of UE. The outcomes encourage the measurement of inclusive and identified charged particle $p_{\rm T}$ spectra (over a wide range of $p_{\rm T}$) associated to UE aimed at better understanding the similarities between $pp$ and heavy-ion data discovered at the LHC.

Nutrient removal from agricultural run-off in demonstrative full scale tubular photobioreactors for microalgae growth

The objective of this paper is to present the design, construction and operation of 3 full scale semi-closed, horizontal tubular photobioreactors (PBR) used to remove nutrients of a mixture of agricultural run-off (90%) and treated domestic wastewater (10%). The microalgal biomass produced in the PBRs was harvested in a static lamella settling tank. Each PBR treated in average 2.3 m3/d. PBRs were submitted to strong seasonal changes regarding solar radiation and temperature, which had a direct impact in the activity of microalgae and the efficiency of the system. Higher mixed liquor pH values were registered in summer (daily average> 10). Most of the influent and effluent nitrogen content was inorganic (average of 9.0 mg N/L and 3.17 mg N/L, respectively), and in the form of nitrate (62% and 50%, respectively). Average nitrogen removal efficiency was 65%, with values of around 90% in summer, 80% in autumn, 50 % in winter and 60% in spring. Most of the influent and effluent phosphorus content was in the form of ortophosphate. Influent average was 0.62 mg P/L, but with great variations and in a considerable number of samples not detected. Removal efficiency (when influent values were detected) was very high during all the study, usually greater than 95%, and there were not clear seasonal trends for efficiency as observed for TIN. Volumetric biomass production greatly changed between seasons with much lower values in winter (7 g VSS/m3d) than in summer (43 g VSS/m3d). Biomass separation efficiency of the settler was very good in either terms of turbidity and total suspended solids, being most of the time lower than 5 UNT and 15 mg/L, respectively. Overall this study demonstrated the reliable and good effectiveness of microalgae based technologies such as the PBR to remove nutrients at a full scale size.

Energy density and path-length dependence of the fractional momentum loss in heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ from 62.4 to 5020 GeV

In this work a study of the fractional momentum loss ($S_{\rm loss}$) as a function of the characteristic path-length ($L$) and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time ($ε_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$) for heavy-ion collisions at different $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ is presented. The study has been conducted using inclusive charged particles from intermediate to large transverse momentum ($5<p_{\rm T}<20$ GeV/$c$). Within uncertainties and for all the transverse momentum values which were explored, the fractional momentum loss linearly increases with $({ε_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}})^{3/8}$$L$. The functional form of $S_{\rm loss}$ vs. $({ε_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}})^{3/8}$$L$ seems to be universal. Moreover, for identified charged hadrons a linear relationship between $S_{\rm loss}$ and $L$ is also observed. The behaviour of data could provide important information aimed to understand the parton energy loss mechanism in heavy-ion collisions and some insight into the expected effect for small systems.

Universality of the underlying event in pp collisions

In this paper we study ATLAS results on underlying event in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=0.9, 7 and 13 TeV. We show that the center-of-mass energy dependences of the charged-particle production sensitive to the underlying event ("transverse" region) and to the hardest partonic interaction ("towards" and "away" regions) in pp collisions can be both understood in terms of the change of the inclusive average multiplicity. Within uncertainties, the corresponding particle production as a function of the leading charged particle shows no significant $\sqrt{s}$-dependence for the three regions once they are scaled according to the relative change in multiplicity. The scaling properties reported here are well reproduced by PYTHIA 8.212 tune Monash 2013 and suggest an universality of the underlying event in hadronic interactions at high $\sqrt{s}$. Based on the simulations, we observed that the same scaling properties are also present in the average number of multi-partonic interactions as a function of the leading charged particle. Moreover, the multiplicity distributions associated to the underlying event exhibit a KNO scaling.

Revealing the source of the radial flow patterns in proton--proton collisions using hard probes

In this work, we propose a tool to reveal the origin of the collective-like phenomena observed in proton--proton collisions. We exploit the fundamental difference between the underlying mechanisms, color reconnection (CR) and hydrodynamics, which produce radial flow patterns in \textsc{Pythia}~8 and \textsc{Epos}~3, respectively. Specifically, we proceed by examining the strength of the coupling between the soft and hard components which, by construction, is larger in \textsc{Pythia}~8 than in \textsc{Epos}~3. We study the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) distributions of charged pions, kaons and (anti)protons in inelastic pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7\,TeV produced at mid-rapidity. Specific selections are made on an event-by-event basis as a function of the charged particle multiplicity and the transverse momentum of the leading jet ($p_{\rm T}^{\rm jet}$) reconstructed using the \textsc{FastJet} algorithm at mid-pseudorapidity ($|η|<1$). From our studies, quantitative and qualitative differences between \textsc{Pythia}~8 and \textsc{Epos}~3 are found in the $p_{\rm T}$ spectra when (for a given multiplicity class) the leading jet $p_{\rm T}$ is increased. In addition, we show that for low-multiplicity events the presence of jets can produce radial flow-like behavior. Motivated by our findings, we propose to perform a similar analysis using experimental data from RHIC and LHC.
