Quadratic curvature corrections to stringy effective actions and the absence of de Sitter vacua

We investigate the combined effect of fluxes and higher-order curvature corrections, in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet term, on the existence of de Sitter vacua in a heterotic string inspired framework, compactified on spheres and tori. We first gain some intuition on the effects of these corrections by studying a perturbative expansion in the small Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Then, for choices of potential closer to the string theory predictions, we show that the inclusion of quadratic curvature corrections actually reduces the parametric likelihood of de Sitter solutions.

Generalised scalar-tensor theories and self-tuning

We explore a family of generalised scalar-tensor theories that exhibit self-tuning to low scale anti de Sitter vacua, even in the presence of a large cosmological constant. We are able to examine the linearised fluctuations about these vacua and compute the corresponding amplitude. Thanks to a subtle interplay between a weak scalar coupling and a low scalar mass, it is possible to exhibit self-tuning and compatibility with solar system tests of gravity without resorting to non-linearities and unreliable screening mechanisms. The weakness of the scalar coupling and the correspondingly slow response to vacuum energy phase transitions may present some interesting possibilities for connecting early universe inflation to the cancellation of vacuum energy.

A stringy perspective on the coincidence problem

We argue that, for generic string compactifications, dark energy is likely to signal the beginning of the end of our universe, perhaps even through decompactification, with possible implications for the cosmological coincidence problem. Thanks to the scarcity (absence?) of stable de Sitter vacua, dark energy in string theory is assumed to take the form of a quintessence field in slow roll. As it rolls, a tower of heavy states will generically descend, triggering an apocalyptic phase transition in the low energy cosmological dynamics after at most a few hundred Hubble times. As a result, dark energy domination cannot continue indefinitely and there is at least a percentage chance that we find ourselves in the first Hubble epoch. We use a toy model of quintessence coupled to a tower of heavy states to explicitly demonstrate the breakdown in the cosmological dynamics as the tower becomes light. This occurs through a large number of corresponding particles being produced after a certain time, overwhelming quintessence. We also discuss some implications for early universe inflation.

Massive Galileons and Vainshtein Screening

The Vainshtein screening mechanism relies on nonlinear interaction terms becoming dominant close to a compact source. However, theories displaying this mechanism are generally understood to be low-energy theories: it is unclear that operators emerging from UV completion do not interfere with terms inducing Vainshtein screening. In this work, we find a set of interacting massive Galileon theories that exhibit Vainshtein screening; examining potential UV completions of these theories, we determine that the screening does not survive the extension. We find that neglecting operators when integrating out a heavy field is non-trivial, and either care must be taken to ensure that omitted terms are small for the whole domain, or one is forced to work solely with the UV theory. We also comment on massive deformations of the familiar Wess-Zumino Galileons.

Unimodular vs Nilpotent Superfield Approach to Pure dS Supergravity

Recent progress in understanding de Sitter spacetime in supergravity and string theory has led to the development of a four dimensional supergravity with spontaneously broken supersymmetry allowing for de Sitter vacua, also called de Sitter supergravity. One approach makes use of constrained (nilpotent) superfields, while an alternative one couples supergravity to a locally supersymmetric generalization of the Volkov-Akulov goldstino action. These two approaches have been shown to give rise to the same 4D action. A novel approach to de Sitter vacua in supergravity involves the generalisation of unimodular gravity to supergravity using a super-Stückelberg mechanism. In this paper, we make a connection between this new approach and the previous two which are in the context of nilpotent superfields and the goldstino brane. We show that upon appropriate field redefinitions, the 4D actions match up to the cubic order in the fields. This points at the possible existence of a more general framework to obtain de Sitter spacetimes from high-energy theories.

Deconstructing higher order clockwork gravity

We consider the higher order clockwork theory of gravitational interactions, whereby a number of gravitons are coupled together with TeV strength, but nevertheless generate a Planck scale coupling to matter without the need for a dilaton. It is shown that the framework naturally lends itself to a five-dimensional geometry, and we find the 5D continuum version of such deconstructed 4D gravitational clockwork models. Moreover, the clockwork picture has matter coupled to particular gravitons, which in the 5D framework looks like a braneworld model, with the Randall-Sundrum model being a special case. More generally, the gravitational clockwork leads to a family of scalar-tensor braneworld models, where the scalar is not a dilaton.

Dark energy loopholes some time after GW170817

We revisit the constraints on scalar tensor theories of modified gravity following the purge of GW170817. We pay particular attention to dynamical loopholes where the anomalous speed of propagation of the gravitational wave can vanish on-shell, when we impose the dynamical field equations. By working in the effective field theory formalism we are able to improve on previous analyses, scanning a much wider class of theories, including Beyond Horndeski and DHOST. Furthermore, the formalism is well adapted to consider the effect of inhomogeneous perturbations, where we explicitly take into account the fact that the galactic overdensities are pressureless to leading order.

The Super-Stuckelberg procedure and dS in Pure Supergravity

Understanding de Sitter space in supergravity - and string theory - has lead to an intense amount of work for more than two decades, largely motivated by the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe in 1998. In this paper, we consider a non-trivial generalisation of unimodular gravity to minimal N = 1 supergravity, which allows for de Sitter solutions without the need of introducing any matter. We formulate a superspace version of the Stuckelberg procedure, which restores diffeomorphism and local supersymmetry invariance. This introduces the goldstino associated to spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry in a natural way. The cosmological constant and gravitino mass are related to the vacuum expectation value of the components of a Lagrange multiplier imposing a super-unimodularity condition.

A natural theory of dark energy

We propose a mechanism that generates a naturally light dark energy field (with Hubble scale mass), starting from a theory with exclusively high scale (Planckian) couplings. It is derived from the clockwork model, with ${\cal O}(100)$ scalar fields interacting among themselves as well as with a 4-form field strength. We explicitly embed our model in type IIA supergravity. We also give an alternative interpretation in a braneworld set-up.

Quantum corrections to vacuum energy sequestering (with monodromy)

Field theory models of axion monodromy have been shown to exhibit vacuum energy sequestering as an emergent phenomenon for cancelling radiative corrections to the cosmological constant. We study one loop corrections to this class of models coming from virtual axions using a heat kernel expansion. We find that the structure of the original sequestering proposals is no longer preserved at low energies. Nevertheless, the cancellation of radiative corrections to the cosmological constant remains robust, even with the new structures required by quantum corrections.

Cosmological consequences of Omnia Sequestra

Vacuum energy sequestering is a mechanism for cancelling off the radiative corrections to vacuum energy. The most comprehensive low energy model, proposed in 1606.04958 [hep-th], has the ability to cancel off radiative corrections to vacuum energy for loops of both matter and gravitons, in contrast to earlier proposals. Here we explore the framework and cosmological consequences of this model, which we call Omnia Sequestra, owing to its ability to sequester all. A computation of historic integrals on a cosmological background reveals some subtleties with UV sensitivity not seen in earlier models, but which are tamed in a Universe that grows sufficiently old. For these old Universes, we estimate the size of the radiatively stable residual cosmological constant and show that it does not exceed the critical density of our Universe today. We also study the effect of phase transitions, both homogeneous and inhomogeneous, and find that generically spacetime regions with a small cosmological constant do not need to be fine-tuned against the scale of the transition, a result which is now seen to hold across all models of sequestering. The model is developed in other ways, from its compatibility with inflation, to the correct inclusion of boundaries and the geometric consequences of certain choices of boundary data.

Monodromy inflation and an emergent mechanism for stabilising the cosmological constant

We show that a pair of field theory monodromies in which the shift symmetry is broken by small, well motivated deformations, naturally incorporates a mechanism for cancelling off radiative corrections to the cosmological constant. The lighter monodromy sector plays the role of inflation as well as providing a rigid degree of freedom that acts as a dynamical counterterm for the cosmological constant. The heavier monodromy sector includes a rigid dilaton that forces a global constraint on the system and the cancellation of vacuum energy loops occurs at low energies via the sequestering mechanism. This suggests that monodromy constructions in string theory could be adapted to incorporate mechanisms to stabilise the cosmological constant in their low energy descriptions.

Higher Order Clockwork Gravity

We present a higher order generalisation of the clockwork mechanism starting from an underlying non-linear multigravity theory with a single scale and nearest neighbour ghost-free interactions. Without introducing any hierarchies in the underlying potential, this admits a family of Minkowski vacua around which massless graviton fluctuations couple to matter exponentially more weakly than the heavy modes. Although multi-diffeomorphisms are broken to the diagonal subgroup in our theory, an asymmetric distribution of conformal factors in the background vacua translates this diagonal symmetry into an asymmetric shift of the graviton gears. In particular we present a TeV scale multigravity model with ${\cal O}(10)$ sites that contains a massless mode whose coupling to matter is Planckian, and a tower of massive modes starting at a TeV mass range and with TeV strength couplings. This suggests a possible application to the hierarchy problem as well as a candidate for dark matter.

Dark energy after GW170817, revisited

We revisit the status of scalar-tensor theories with applications to dark energy in the aftermath of the gravitational wave signal GW170817 and its optical counterpart GRB170817A. At the level of the cosmological background, we identify a class of theories, previously declared unviable in this context, whose anomalous gravitational wave speed is proportional to the scalar equation of motion. As long as the scalar field is assumed not to couple directly to matter, this raises the possibility of compatibility with the gravitational wave data, for any cosmological sources, thanks to the scalar dynamics. This newly "rescued" class of theories includes examples of generalised quintic galileons from Horndeski theories. Despite the promise of this leading order result, we show that the loophole ultimately fails when we include the effect of large scale inhomogeneities.

Non-perturbative aspects of galileon duality

We study quantum aspects of the galileon duality, especially in the case of a particular interacting galileon theory that is said to be dual to a free theory through the action of a simultaneous field and coordinate transformation. This would appear to map a theory with multiple vacua to one with a unique vacuum state. However, by regulating the duality transformation using external sources, we are able to preserve the full vacuum structure in the dual frame. By explicitly calculating the one-particle irreducible effective action on a maximally symmetric background, we identify a semi-classical contribution to the Wightman functions that has not been taken into account in previous analyses due to the singular point in the duality map. This may affect its spectral properties at high energy scales. These observations cast doubt on the main evidence in support of a non-local UV structure for galileons.

Vainshtein in the UV and a Wilsonian analysis of derivatively coupled scalars

In the first part of this paper we critically examine the ultra-violet implications of theories that exhibit Vainshtein screening, taking into account both the standard Wilsonian perspective as well as more exotic possibilities. Aspects of this discussion draw on results from the second part of the paper in which we perform a general study of derivatively coupled scalar theories using non-perturbative exact renormalisation group techniques, which are of interest independently of their application to modified gravity. In this context, we demonstrate the suppression of quantum corrections within the Vainshtein radius and discuss the potential relation with the classicalisation conjecture. We question whether the latter can be considered a realistic candidate for UV completion of large-scale modifications of gravity on account of a dangerously low classicalisation/strong coupling scale.

Gravitational Mechanisms to Self-Tune the Cosmological Constant: Obstructions and Ways Forward

Gravitational models of self-tuning are those in which vacuum energy has no observable effect on spacetime curvature, even though it is a priori unsuppressed below the cut-off. We complement Weinberg's no go theorem by studying field theoretic completions of self-adjustment allowing for broken translations as well as other generalisations, and identify new obstructions. Our analysis uses a very general Kallen-Lehmann spectral representation of the exchange amplitude for conserved sources of energy-momentum and exploits unitarity and Lorentz invariance to show that a transition from self-tuning of long wavelength sources to near General Relativity on shorter scales is generically not possible. We search for novel ways around our obstructions and highlight two interesting possibilities. The first is an example of a unitary field configuration on anti-de Sitter space with the desired transition from self-tuning to GR. A second example is motivated by vacuum energy sequestering.

An Etude on Global Vacuum Energy Sequester

Recently two of the authors proposed a mechanism of vacuum energy sequester as a means of protecting the observable cosmological constant from quantum radiative corrections. The original proposal was based on using global Lagrange multipliers, but later a local formulation was provided. Subsequently other interesting claims of a different non-local approach to the cosmological constant problem were made, based again on global Lagrange multipliers. We examine some of these proposals and find their mutual relationship. We explain that the proposals which do not treat the cosmological constant counterterm as a dynamical variable require fine tunings to have acceptable solutions. Furthermore, the counterterm often needs to be retuned at every order in the loop expansion to cancel the radiative corrections to the cosmological constant, just like in standard GR. These observations are an important reminder of just how the proposal of vacuum energy sequester avoids such problems.
