Determination of the QCD Coupling from ALEPH $τ$ Decay Data

We present a comprehensive study of the determination of the strong coupling from $τ$ decay, using the most recent release of the experimental ALEPH data. We critically review all theoretical strategies used in previous works and put forward various novel approaches which allow to study complementary aspects of the problem. We investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods, trying to uncover their potential hidden weaknesses and test the stability of the obtained results under slight variations of the assumed inputs. We perform several determinations, using different methodologies, and find a very consistent set of results. All determinations are in excellent agreement, and allow us to extract a very reliable value for $α_s(m_τ^2)$. The main uncertainty originates in the pure perturbative error from unknown higher orders. Taking into account the systematic differences between the results obtained with the CIPT and FOPT prescriptions, we find $α_{s}^{(n_f=3)}(m_τ^2) = 0.328 \pm 0.013$ which implies $α_{s}^{(n_f=5)}(M_Z^{2}) = 0.1197\pm 0.0015$.

Updated determination of $α_s(m_τ^2)$ from tau decays

Using the most recent release of the ALEPH $τ$ decay data, we present a very detailed phenomenological update of the $α_s(m_τ^2)$ determination. We have exploited the sensitivity to the strong coupling in many different ways, exploring several complementary methodologies. All determinations turn out to be in excellent agreement, allowing us to extract a very reliable value of the strong coupling. We find $α_{s}^{(n_f=3)}(m_τ^2) = 0.328 \pm 0.012$ which implies $α_{s}^{(n_f=5)}(M_Z^{2}) = 0.1197\pm 0.0014$. We critically revise previous work, and point out the problems flawing some recent analyses which claim slightly smaller values.

Low-energy signals of strongly-coupled electroweak symmetry-breaking scenarios

The non-observation of new particles at the LHC suggests the existence of a mass gap above the electroweak scale. This situation is adequately described through a general electroweak effective theory with the established fields and Standard Model symmetries. Its couplings contain all information about the unknown short-distance dynamics which is accessible at low energies. We consider a generic strongly-coupled scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking, with heavy states above the gap, and analyze the imprints that its lightest bosonic excitations leave on the effective Lagrangian couplings. Different quantum numbers of the heavy states imply different patterns of low-energy couplings, with characteristic correlations which could be identified in future data samples. The predictions can be sharpened with mild assumptions about the ultraviolet behaviour of the underlying fundamental theory.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and the Higgs Boson

The first LHC run has confirmed the Standard Model as the correct theory at the electroweak scale, and the existence of a Higgs-like particle associated with the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak gauge symmetry. These lectures overview the present knowledge on the Higgs boson and discuss alternative scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking which are already being constrained by the experimental data.

Status after the first LHC run: Looking for new directions in the physics landscape

The LHC data have confirmed the Standard Model as the correct theory at the electroweak scale. It successfully explains the experimental results with high precision and all its ingredients, including the Higgs boson, have been finally verified. At the same time, the negative searches for signals of new phenomena challenge our previous theoretical wisdom on new-physics scenarios.

ICHEP 2014 Summary: Theory Status after the First LHC Run

A brief overview of the main highlights discussed at ICHEP 2014 is presented. The experimental data confirm that the scalar boson discovered at the LHC couples to other particles as predicted in the Standard Model. This constitutes a great success of the present theoretical paradigm, which has been confirmed as the correct description at the electroweak scale. At the same time, the negative searches for signals of new phenomena tightly constrain many new-physics scenarios, challenging previous theoretical wisdom and opening new perspectives in fundamental physics. Fresh ideas are needed to face the many pending questions unanswered within the Standard Model framework.

Flavour-changing top decays in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model

We perform a complete one-loop computation of the two-body flavour-changing top decays $t \rightarrow c h$ and $t \rightarrow c V$ ($V= γ, Z$), within the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. We evaluate the impact of the model parameters on the associated branching ratios, taking into account constraints from flavour data and measurements of the Higgs properties. Assuming that the $125$~GeV Higgs corresponds to the lightest CP-even scalar of the CP-conserving aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, we find that the rates for such flavour-changing top decays lie below the expected sensitivity of the future high-luminosity phase of the LHC. Measurements of the Higgs signal strength in the di-photon channel are found to play an important role in limiting the size of the $t \rightarrow c h$ decay rate when the charged scalar of the model is light.

Low-mass fermiophobic charged Higgs phenomenology in two-Higgs-doublet models

After the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson, the possibility of an enlarged scalar sector arises as a natural question. Experimental searches for charged scalars have been already performed with negative results. We analyze the phenomenology associated with a fermiophobic charged Higgs (it does not couple to fermions at tree level), in two-Higgs-doublet models. All present experimental bounds are evaded trivially in this case, and one needs to consider other decay and production channels. We study the associated production of a charged Higgs with either a $W$ or a neutral scalar boson, and the relevant decays for a light fermiophobic charged Higgs. The interesting features of this scenario should result encouraging for the LHC collaborations to perform searches for such a particle.

A few words about Resonances in the Electroweak Effective Lagrangian

Contrary to a widely spread believe, we have demonstrated that strongly coupled electroweak models including both a light Higgs-like boson and massive spin-1 resonances are not in conflict with experimental constraints on the oblique S and T parameters. We use an effective Lagrangian implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} that contains the Standard Model gauge bosons coupled to the electroweak Goldstones, one Higgs-like scalar state h with mass m_h=126 GeV and the lightest vector and axial-vector resonance multiplets V and A. We have considered the one-loop calculation of S and T in order to study the viability of these strongly-coupled scenarios, being short-distance constraints and dispersive relations the main ingredients of the calculation. Once we have constrained the resonance parameters, we do a first approach to the determination of the low energy constants of the electroweak effective theory at low energies (without resonances). We show this determination in the case of the purely Higgsless bosonic Lagrangian.

Leptons and QCD

Three important QCD-related aspects of the $τ$ and $μ$ dynamics are reviewed: the determination of the strong coupling from the hadronic tau decay width, leading to the updated value $α_s(m_τ^2) = 0.331 \pm 0.013$; the measurement of $|V_{us}|$ through the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the $τ$, and the Standard Model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

$B_{s,d}^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ Decays in Two-Higgs Doublet Models

We study the rare leptonic decays $B_{s,d}^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ within the general framework of the aligned two-Higgs doublet model. A complete one-loop calculation of the relevant short-distance Wilson coefficients is presented, with a detailed technical summary of the results. The phenomenological constraints imposed by present data on the model parameters are also investigated.

Theoretical overview of kaon decays

Kaon decays are an important testing ground of the electroweak flavour theory. They can provide new signals of CP violation and, perhaps, a window into physics beyond the Standard Model. At the same time, they exhibit an interesting interplay of long-distance QCD effects in flavour-changing transitions. A brief overview is presented, focusing on a few selected topics of particular interest. A more detailed and comprehensive review can be found in arXiv:1107.6001.

We present a complete one-loop calculation of the relevant short-distance Wilson coefficients, giving a detailed technical summary of our results and comparing them with previous calculations performed in particular limits or approximations. We investigate the impact of various model parameters on the branching ratios and study the phenomenological constraints imposed by present data.

Electric Dipole Moments in Two-Higgs-Doublet Models

Electric dipole moments are extremely sensitive probes for additional sources of CP violation in new physics models. Specifically, they have been argued in the past to exclude new CP-violating phases in two-Higgs-doublet models. Since recently models including such phases have been discussed widely, we revisit the available constraints in the presence of mechanisms which are typically invoked to evade flavour-changing neutral currents. To that aim, we start by assessing the necessary calculations on the hadronic, nuclear and atomic/molecular level, deriving expressions with conservative error estimates. Their phenomenological analysis in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models yields strong constraints, in some cases weakened by a cancellation mechanism among contributions from neutral scalars. While the corresponding parameter combinations do not yet have to be unnaturally small, the constraints are likely to preclude large effects in other CP-violating observables. Nevertheless, the generically expected contributions to electric dipole moments in this class of models lie within the projected sensitivity of the next-generation experiments.

Oblique S and T Constraints on Electroweak Strongly-Coupled Models with a Light Higgs

Using a general effective Lagrangian implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)L x SU(2)R -> SU(2){L+R}, we present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S and T parameters within electroweak strongly-coupled models with a light scalar. Imposing a proper ultraviolet behaviour, we determine S and T at next-to-leading order in terms of a few resonance parameters. The constraints from the global fit to electroweak precision data force the massive vector and axial-vector states to be heavy, with masses above the TeV scale, and suggest that the W+W- and ZZ couplings of the Higgs-like scalar should be close to the Standard Model value. Our findings are generic, since they only rely on soft requirements on the short-distance properties of the underlying strongly-coupled theory, which are widely satisfied in more specific scenarios.

Towards a general analysis of LHC data within two-Higgs-doublet models

The data accumulated so far confirm the Higgs-like nature of the new boson discovered at the LHC. The Standard Model Higgs hypothesis is compatible with the collider results and no significant deviations from the Standard Model have been observed neither in the flavour sector nor in electroweak precision observables. We update the LHC and Tevatron constraints on CP-conserving two-Higgs-doublet models without tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents. While the relative sign between the top Yukawa and the gauge coupling of the 126 GeV Higgs is found be the same as in the SM, at 90% CL, there is a sign degeneracy in the determination of its bottom and tau Yukawa couplings. This results in several disjoint allowed regions in the parameter space. We show how generic sum rules governing the scalar couplings determine the properties of the additional Higgs bosons in the different allowed regions. The role of electroweak precision observables, low-energy flavour constraints and LHC searches for additional scalars to further restrict the available parameter space is also discussed.

Precision Tau Physics

Precise measurements of the lepton properties provide stringent tests of the Standard Model and accurate determinations of its parameters. We overview the present status of tau physics, highlighting the most recent developments, and discuss the prospects for future improvements. The leptonic decays of the tau lepton probe the structure of the weak currents and the universality of their couplings to the W boson. The universality of the leptonic Z couplings has also been tested through leptonic Z decays. The hadronic tau decay modes constitute an ideal tool for studying low-energy effects of the strong interaction in very clean conditions. Accurate determinations of the QCD coupling and the Cabibbo mixing have been obtained with tau data. The large mass of the tau opens the possibility to study many kinematically-allowed exclusive decay modes and extract relevant dynamical information. Violations of flavour and CP conservation laws can also be searched for with tau decays. Related subjects such as muon decays, the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments, neutrino mixing and B-meson decays into tau leptons are briefly covered. Being one the fermions most strongly coupled to the scalar sector, the tau lepton is playing now a very important role at the LHC as a tool to test the Higgs properties and search for new physics at higher scales.

Viability of light-Higgs strongly-coupled scenarios

Contrary to what is sometimes stated, the current electroweak precision data easily allow for massive composite resonance states at the natural EW scale, i.e., well over the TeV. The oblique parameters S and T are analyzed by means of an effective Lagrangian that implements the $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\to SU(2)_{L+R}$ pattern of electroweak symmetry breaking. They are computed at the one-loop level and incorporating the newly discovered Higgs-like boson and possible spin-1 composite resonances. Imposing a proper ultraviolet behaviour is crucial and allows us to determine S and T at next-to-leading order in terms of a few resonance parameters. Electroweak precision data force the vector and axial-vector states to have masses above the TeV scale and suggest that the W+W- and ZZ couplings to the Higgs-like scalar should be close to the Standard Model value. Our findings are generic: they only rely on symmetry principles and soft requirements on the short-distance properties of the underlying strongly-coupled theory, which are widely satisfied in more specific scenarios.
