Extensive and Sub-Extensive Chaos in Globally-Coupled Dynamical Systems

Using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques, we show that chaos in globally-coupled identical dynamical systems, be they dissipative or Hamiltonian, is both extensive and sub-extensive: their spectrum of Lyapunov exponents is asymptotically flat (thus extensive) at the value $λ_0$ given by a single unit forced by the mean-field, but sandwiched between sub-extensive bands containing typically $\mathcal{O}(\log N)$ exponents whose values vary as $λ\simeq λ_\infty + c/\log N$ with $λ_\infty \neq λ_0$.

Collective chaos in pulse-coupled neural networks

We study the dynamics of two symmetrically coupled populations of identical leaky integrate-and-fire neurons characterized by an excitatory coupling. Upon varying the coupling strength, we find symmetry-breaking transitions that lead to the onset of various chimera states as well as to a new regime, where the two populations are characterized by a different degree of synchronization. Symmetric collective states of increasing dynamical complexity are also observed. The computation of the the finite-amplitude Lyapunov exponent allows us to establish the chaoticity of the (collective) dynamics in a finite region of the phase plane. The further numerical study of the standard Lyapunov spectrum reveals the presence of several positive exponents, indicating that the microscopic dynamics is high-dimensional.

Density Profiles in Open Superdiffusive Systems

We numerically solve a discretized model of Levy random walks on a finite one-dimensional domain in the presence of sources and with a reflection coefficient $r$. At the domain boundaries, the steady-state density profile is non-analytic. The meniscus exponent $μ$, introduced to characterize this singular behavior, uniquely identifies the whole profile. Numerical data suggest that $μ=α/2 + r(α/2-1)$, where $α$ is the Levy exponent of the step-length distribution. As an application, we show that this model reproduces the temperature profiles obtained for a chain of oscillators displaying anomalous heat conduction. Remarkably, the case of free-boundary conditions in the chain correspond to a Levy walk with negative reflection coefficient.

Collective behavior of heterogeneous neural networks

We investigate a network of integrate-and-fire neurons characterized by a distribution of spiking frequencies. Upon increasing the coupling strength, the model exhibits a transition from an asynchronous regime to a nontrivial collective behavior. At variance with the Kuramoto model, (i) the macroscopic dynamics is irregular even in the thermodynamic limit, and (ii) the microscopic (single-neuron) evolution is linearly stable.

Collective oscillations in disordered neural networks

We investigate the onset of collective oscillations in a network of pulse-coupled leaky-integrate-and-fire neurons in the presence of quenched and annealed disorder. We find that the disorder induces a weak form of chaos that is analogous to that arising in the Kuramoto model for a finite number N of oscillators [O.V. Popovych at al., Phys. Rev. E 71} 065201(R) (2005)]. In fact, the maximum Lyapunov exponent turns out to scale to zero for N going to infinite, with an exponent that is different for the two types of disorder. In the thermodynamic limit, the random-network dynamics reduces to that of a fully homogenous system with a suitably scaled coupling strength. Moreover, we show that the Lyapunov spectrum of the periodically collective state scales to zero as 1/N^2, analogously to the scaling found for the `splay state'.

Stability of splay states in globally coupled rotators

The stability of dynamical states characterized by a uniform firing rate ({\it splay states}) is analyzed in a network of $N$ globally pulse-coupled rotators (neurons) subject to a generic velocity field. In particular, we analyse short-wavelength modes that were known to be marginally stable in the infinite $N$ limit and show that the corresponding Floquet exponent scale as $1/N^2$. Moreover, we find that the sign, and thereby the stability, of this spectral component is determined by the sign of the average derivative of the velocity field. For leaky-integrate-and-fire neurons, an analytic expression for the whole spectrum is obtained. In the intermediate case of continuous velocity fields, the Floquet exponents scale faster than $1/N^2$ (namely, as $1/N^4$) and we even find strictly neutral directions in a wider class than the sinusoidal velocity fields considered by Watanabe and Strogatz in {\it Physica D 74 (1994) 197-253}.

Stable chaos

Stable chaos is a generalization of the chaotic behaviour exhibited by cellular automata to continuous-variable systems and it owes its name to an underlying irregular and yet linearly stable dynamics. In this review we discuss analogies and differences with the usual deterministic chaos and introduce several tools for its characterization. Some examples of transitions from ordered behavior to stable chaos are also analyzed to further clarify the underlying dynamical properties. Finally, two models are specifically discussed: the diatomic hard-point gas chain and a network of globally coupled neurons.

A stochastic model of anomalous heat transport: analytical solution of the steady state

We consider a one-dimensional harmonic crystal with conservative noise, in contact with two stochastic Langevin heat baths at different temperatures. The noise term consists of collisions between neighbouring oscillators that exchange their momenta, with a rate $γ$. The stationary equations for the covariance matrix are exactly solved in the thermodynamic limit ($N\to\infty$). In particular, we derive an analytical expression for the temperature profile, which turns out to be independent of $γ$. Moreover, we obtain an exact expression for the leading term of the energy current, which scales as $1/\sqrt{γN}$. Our theoretical results are finally found to be consistent with the numerical solutions of the covariance matrix for finite $N$.

Measuring spike train synchrony

Estimating the degree of synchrony or reliability between two or more spike trains is a frequent task in both experimental and computational neuroscience. In recent years, many different methods have been proposed that typically compare the timing of spikes on a certain time scale to be fixed beforehand. Here, we propose the ISI-distance, a simple complementary approach that extracts information from the interspike intervals by evaluating the ratio of the instantaneous frequencies. The method is parameter free, time scale independent and easy to visualize as illustrated by an application to real neuronal spike trains obtained in vitro from rat slices. In a comparison with existing approaches on spike trains extracted from a simulated Hindemarsh-Rose network, the ISI-distance performs as well as the best time-scale-optimized measure based on spike timing.

Stability of the splay state in pulse--coupled networks

The stability of the dynamical states characterized by a uniform firing rate ({\it splay states}) is analyzed in a network of globally coupled leaky integrate-and-fire neurons. This is done by reducing the set of differential equations to a map that is investigated in the limit of large network size. We show that the stability of the splay state depends crucially on the ratio between the pulse--width and the inter-spike interval. More precisely, the spectrum of Floquet exponents turns out to consist of three components: (i) one that coincides with the predictions of the mean-field analysis [Abbott-van Vreesvijk, 1993]; (ii) a component measuring the instability of "finite-frequency" modes; (iii) a number of "isolated" eigenvalues that are connected to the characteristics of the single pulse and may give rise to strong instabilities (the Floquet exponent being proportional to the network size). Finally, as a side result, we find that the splay state can be stable even for inhibitory coupling.

Anomalous kinetics and transport from 1D self--consistent mode--coupling theory

We study the dynamics of long-wavelength fluctuations in one-dimensional (1D) many-particle systems as described by self-consistent mode-coupling theory. The corresponding nonlinear integro-differential equations for the relevant correlators are solved analytically and checked numerically. In particular, we find that the memory functions exhibit a power-law decay accompanied by relatively fast oscillations. Furthermore, the scaling behaviour and, correspondingly, the universality class depends on the order of the leading nonlinear term. In the cubic case, both viscosity and thermal conductivity diverge in the thermodynamic limit. In the quartic case, a faster decay of the memory functions leads to a finite viscosity, while thermal conductivity exhibits an even faster divergence. Finally, our analysis puts on a more firm basis the previously conjectured connection between anomalous heat conductivity and anomalous diffusion.

A new approach to partial synchronization in globally coupled rotators

We develop a formalism to analyze the behaviour of pulse--coupled identical phase oscillators with a specific attention devoted to the onset of partial synchronization. The method, which allows describing the dynamics both at the microscopic and macroscopic level, is introduced in a general context, but then the application to the dynamics of leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons is analysed. As a result, we derive a set of delayed equations describing exactly the LIF behaviour in the thermodynamic limit. We also investigate the weak coupling regime by means of a perturbative analysis, which reveals that the evolution rule reduces to a set of ordinary differential equations. Robustness and generality of the partial synchronization regime is finally tested both by adding noise and considering different force fields.

Desynchronization in diluted neural networks

The dynamical behaviour of a weakly diluted fully-inhibitory network of pulse-coupled spiking neurons is investigated. Upon increasing the coupling strength, a transition from regular to stochastic-like regime is observed. In the weak-coupling phase, a periodic dynamics is rapidly approached, with all neurons firing with the same rate and mutually phase-locked. The strong-coupling phase is characterized by an irregular pattern, even though the maximum Lyapunov exponent is negative. The paradox is solved by drawing an analogy with the phenomenon of ``stable chaos'', i.e. by observing that the stochastic-like behaviour is "limited" to a an exponentially long (with the system size) transient. Remarkably, the transient dynamics turns out to be stationary.

From synchronization to Lyapunov exponents and back

The goal of this paper is twofold. In the first part we discuss a general approach to determine Lyapunov exponents from ensemble- rather than time-averages. The approach passes through the identification of locally stable and unstable manifolds (the Lyapunov vectors), thereby revealing an analogy with generalized synchronization. The method is then applied to a periodically forced chaotic oscillator to show that the modulus of the Lyapunov exponent associated to the phase dynamics increases quadratically with the coupling strength and it is therefore different from zero already below the onset of phase-synchronization. The analytical calculations are carried out for a model, the generalized special flow, that we construct as a simplified version of the periodically forced Rossler oscillator.

The one-dimensional Lennard-Jones system: collective fluctuations and breakdown of hydrodynamics

The dynamical correlations of a model consisting of particles constrained on the line and interacting with a nearest--neighbour Lennard--Jones potential are computed by molecular--dynamics simulations. A drastic qualitative change of the spectral shape, from a phonon--like to a diffusive form, is observed upon reducing the particle density even ad moderate temperatures. The latter scenario is due to the spontaneus fragmentation of the crystal--like structure into an ensemble of "clusters" colliding among themselves. In both cases, the spectral linewidths do not follow the usual q^2 behaviour for small wavenumbers q, thus signalling a breakdown of linearized hydrodynamics. This anomaly is traced back by the presence of correlations due to the reduced dimensionality.

Exploring the energy landscape of model proteins: a metric criterion for the determination of dynamical connectivity

A method to reconstruct the energy landscape of small peptides is presented with reference to a 2d off--lattice model. The starting point is a statistical analysis of the configurational distances between generic minima and directly connected pairs (DCP). As the mutual distance of DCP is typically much smaller than that of generic pairs, a metric criterion can be established to identify the great majority of DCP. Advantages and limits of this approach are thoroughly analyzed for three different heteropolymeric chains. A funnel--like structure of the energy landscape is found in all of the three cases, but the escape rates clearly reveal that the native configuration is more easily accessible (and is significantly more stable) for the sequence that is expected to behave as a real protein.

Studies of thermal conductivity in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam like lattices

The pioneering computer simulations of the energy relaxation mechanisms performed by Fermi, Pasta and Ulam can be considered as the first attempt of understanding energy relaxation and thus heat conduction in lattices of nonlinear oscillators. In this paper we describe the most recent achievements about the divergence of heat conductivity with the system size in 1d and 2d FPU-like lattices. The anomalous behavior is particularly evident at low energies, where it is enhanced by the quasi-harmonic character of the lattice dynamics. Remakably, anomalies persist also in the strongly chaotic region where long--time tails develop in the current autocorrelation function. A modal analysis of the 1d case is also presented in order to gain further insight about the role played by boundary conditions.

On the universality of anomalous one-dimensional heat conductivity

In one and two dimensions, transport coefficients may diverge in the thermodynamic limit due to long--time correlation of the corresponding currents. The effective asymptotic behaviour is addressed with reference to the problem of heat transport in 1d crystals, modeled by chains of classical nonlinear oscillators. Extensive accurate equilibrium and nonequilibrium numerical simulations confirm that the finite-size thermal conductivity diverges with the system size $L$ as $κ\propto L^α$. However, the exponent $α$ deviates systematically from the theoretical prediction $α=1/3$ proposed in a recent paper [O. Narayan, S. Ramaswamy, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}, 200601 (2002)].
