Slow-roll inflation in Palatini $F(R)$ gravity

We study single field slow-roll inflation in the presence of $F(R)$ gravity in the Palatini formulation. In contrast to metric $F(R)$, when rewritten in terms of an auxiliary field and moved to the Einstein frame, Palatini $F(R)$ does not develop a new dynamical degree of freedom. However, it is not possible to solve analytically the constraint equation of the auxiliary field for a general $F(R)$. We propose a method that allows us to circumvent this issue and compute the inflationary observables. We apply this method to test scenarios of the form $F(R) = R + αR^n$ and find that, as in the previously known $n=2$ case, a large $α$ suppresses the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We also find that models with $F(R)$ increasing faster than $R^2$ for large $R$ suffer from numerous problems.

Multiple point criticality principle and Coleman-Weinberg inflation

We apply the multiple point criticality principle to inflationary model building and study Coleman-Weinberg inflation when the scalar potential is quadratic in the logarithmic correction. We analyze also the impact of a non-minimal coupling to gravity under two possible gravity formulation: metric or Palatini. We compare the eventual compatibility of the results with the final data release of the Planck mission.

On the number of $e$-folds in the Jordan and Einstein frames

We investigate how inflationary predictions are affected by the difference in the number of $e$-folds between the Jordan and Einstein frames. We study several test models in relation to a Jordan frame defined by the common Higgs-inflation-like non-minimal coupling to gravity and consider two different formulations of gravity: metric and Palatini. We find that the difference is quite contained in case of a metric Jordan frame while can be quite remarkable in case of a Palatini Jordan frame. We also discuss a way to overcome the discrepancy by introducing a frame invariant physical distance and a consequently frame invariant number of $e$-folds.

Non-minimal (self-)running inflation: metric vs. Palatini formulation

We consider a model of quartic inflation where the inflaton is coupled non-minimally to gravity and the self-induced radiative corrections to its effective potential are dominant. We perform a comparative analysis considering two different formulations of gravity, metric or Palatini, and two different choices for the renormalization scale, widely known as prescription I and II. Moreover we comment on the eventual compatibility of the results with the final data release of the Planck mission.

Dynamically induced Planck scale and inflation in the Palatini formulation

We study non-minimal Coleman-Weinberg inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity in the presence of an $R^2$ term. The Planck scale is dynamically generated by the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton via its non-minimal coupling to the curvature scalar $R$. We show that the addition of the $R^2$ term in Palatini gravity makes non-minimal Coleman-Weinberg inflation again compatible with observational data.

Equivalence of inflationary models between the metric and Palatini formulation of scalar-tensor theories

With a scalar field non-minimally coupled to curvature, the underlying geometry and variational principle of gravity - metric or Palatini - becomes important and makes a difference, as the field dynamics and observational predictions generally depend on this choice. In the present paper we describe a classification principle which encompasses both metric and Palatini models of inflation, employing the fact that inflationary observables can be neatly expressed in terms of certain quantities which remain invariant under conformal transformations and scalar field redefinitions. This allows us to elucidate the specific conditions when a model yields equivalent phenomenology in the metric and Palatini formalisms, and also to outline a method how to systematically construct different models in both formulations that produce the same observables.

Primordial Black Holes from Thermal Inflation

We present a novel mechanism for the production of primordial black holes (PBHs). The mechanism is based on a period of thermal inflation followed by fast-roll inflation due to tachyonic mass of order the Hubble scale. Large perturbations are generated at the end of the thermal inflation as the thermal inflaton potential turns from convex to concave. These perturbations can lead to copious production of PBHs when the relevant scales re-enter horizon. We show that such PBHs can naturally account for the observed dark matter in the Universe when the mass of the thermal inflaton is about $10^6\,$GeV and its coupling to the thermal bath preexisting the late inflation is of order unity. We consider also the possibility of forming the seeds of the supermassive black holes. In this case we find that the mass of the thermal inflaton is about $1\,$GeV, but its couplings have to be very small, $\sim 10^{-7}$. Finally we study a concrete realisation of our mechanism through a running mass model.

A minimal model of inflation and dark radiation

We show that a minimal extension of the Standard Model including a new complex scalar field can explain inflation and the observed effective number of neutrinos. The real part of the singlet plays the role of the inflaton field, while the Goldstone boson emerging from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a global $U(1)$ symmetry contributes to dark radiation and increases the effective number of neutrino species by $0.3$ over the Standard Model value. After detailing the phenomenology of the model, we find that the predicted inflationary observables are in agreement with the current bounds, once the dark radiation component is allowed, both within the metric and Palatini formulation of non-minimally coupled gravity.

New universal attractor in nonmininally coupled gravity: Linear inflation

Once quantum corrections are taken into account, the strong coupling limit of the $ξ$-attractor models (in metric gravity) might depart from the usual Starobinsky solution and move into linear inflation. Furthermore, it is well known that the metric and Palatini formulations of gravity lead to different inflationary predictions in presence of non-minimally couplings between gravity and the inflaton. In this letter we show that for a certain class of non-minimally coupled models, loop corrections will lead to a linear inflation attractor regardless of the adopted gravity formulation.

Loop inflection-point inflation

A novel inflection-point inflation model is analysed. The model considers a massless scalar field, whose self-coupling's running is stabilised by a non-renormalisable operator. The running is controlled by a fermion loop. We find that successful inflation is possible for a natural value of the Yukawa coupling $y\simeq 4\times 10^{-4}$. The necessary fine-tuning is only $\sim 10^{-6}$, which improves on the typical tuning of inflection-point inflation models, such as MSSM inflation. The model predicts a spectral index within the 1-$σ$ bound of the latest CMB observations, with negligible tensors ($r\sim 10^{-(9-10)}$). These results are largely independent of the order of the stabilising non-renormalisable operator.

Constant-Roll (Quasi-)Linear Inflation

In constant-roll inflation, the scalar field that drives the accelerated expansion of the Universe is rolling down its potential at a constant rate. Within this framework, we highlight the relations between the Hubble slow-roll parameters and the potential ones, studying in detail the case of a single-field Coleman-Weinberg model characterised by a non-minimal coupling of the inflaton to gravity. With respect to the exact constant-roll predictions, we find that assuming an approximate slow-roll behaviour yields a difference of $Δr = 0.001$ in the tensor-to-scalar ratio prediction. Such a discrepancy is in principle testable by future satellite missions. As for the scalar spectral index $n_s$, we find that the existing 2-$σ$ bound constrains the value of the non-minimal coupling to $ξ_ϕ\sim 0.29-0.31$ in the model under consideration.

The Palatini side of inflationary attractors

We perform an analysis of models of chaotic inflation where the inflaton field $ϕ$ is coupled non-minimally to gravity via $ξϕ^n g^{μν}R_{μν}(Γ), n>0$. We focus on the Palatini theory of gravity, i.e. the case where the assumptions of the General Relativity are relaxed (that of the connection being the Levi-Civita one) and the gravitational degrees of freedom are encoded not only in the metric but also the connection $Γ$, which is treated as an independent variable. We show that in this case the famous attractor behaviour of simple non-minimally coupled models of inflation is lost. Therefore the attractors are not universal but their existence depends on the underlying theory of gravity in a subtle way. We discuss what this means for chaotic models and their observational consequences.

The EDGES 21 cm Anomaly and Properties of Dark Matter

The recently claimed anomaly in the measurement of the 21 cm hydrogen absorption signal by EDGES at $z\sim 17$, if cosmological, requires the existence of new physics. The possible attempts to resolve the anomaly rely on either (i) cooling the hydrogen gas via new dark matter-hydrogen interactions or (ii) modifying the soft photon background beyond the standard CMB one, as possibly suggested also by the ARCADE~2 excess. We argue that solutions belonging to the first class are generally in tension with cosmological dark matter probes once simple dark sector models are considered. Therefore, we propose soft photon emission by light dark matter as a natural solution to the 21 cm anomaly, studying a few realizations of this scenario. We find that the signal singles out a photophilic dark matter candidate characterised by an enhanced collective decay mechanism, such as axion mini-clusters.

Coleman-Weinberg linear inflation: metric vs. Palatini formulation

It has been previously shown that the linear inflation appears naturally as a solution of Coleman-Weinberg inflation, provided that the inflaton has a non-minimal coupling to gravity and the Planck scale is dynamically generated. We revisit the previous study by improving the discussion of reheating and by comparing the results of the metric and the Palatini formulations of non-minimal gravity. We find that both formulations predict linear inflation but a different number of $e$-folds. If the non-minimal coupling is larger than one, future experimental sensitivity can discriminate between the two realizations.

Phase transition and gravitational wave phenomenology of scalar conformal extensions of the Standard Model

Thermal corrections in classically conformal models typically induce a strong first-order electroweak phase transition, thereby resulting in a stochastic gravitational wave background that could be detectable at gravitational wave observatories. After reviewing the basics of classically conformal scenarios, in this paper we investigate the phase transition dynamics in a thermal environment and the related gravitational wave phenomenology within the framework of scalar conformal extensions of the Standard Model. We find that minimal extensions involving only one additional scalar field struggle to reproduce the correct phase transition dynamics once thermal corrections are accounted for. Next-to-minimal models, instead, yield the desired electroweak symmetry breaking and typically result in a very strong gravitational wave signal.

Scalar-tensor linear inflation

We investigate two approaches to non minimally coupled gravity theories which present linear inflation as attractor solution: a) the scalar-tensor theory approach, where we look for a scalar-tensor theory that would restore results of linear inflation in the strong coupling limit for any form of the non-minimal coupling to gravity of the form of $f(φ)R/2$; b) the particle physics approach, where we motivate the form of the Jordan frame potential by the loop corrections to the inflaton field. In both cases the Jordan frame potentials are modifications of the induced inflation, but instead of the Starobinsky attractor they lead to the linear inflation in the strong coupling limit.

Super-Heavy Dark Matter - Towards Predictive Scenarios from Inflation

A generic prediction of the Coleman-Weinberg inflation is the existence of a heavy particle sector whose interactions with the inflaton, the lightest state in this sector, generate the inflaton potential at loop level. For typical interactions the heavy sector may contain stable states whose relic abundance is generated at the end of inflation by the gravity alone. This general feature, and the absence of any particle physics signal of dark matter so far, motivates us to look for new directions in the dark sector physics, including scenarios in which dark matter is super-heavy. In this article we study the possibility that the dark matter is even heavier than the inflaton, its existence follows from the inflaton dynamics, and its abundance today is {\it naturally} determined by the weakness of gravitational interaction. This implies that the super-heavy dark matter scenarios can be tested via the measurements of inflationary parameters and/or the CMB isocurvature perturbations and non-Gaussianities. We explicitly work out details of three Coleman-Weinberg inflation scenarios, study the systematics of super-heavy dark matter production in those cases, and compute which parts of the parameter spaces can be probed by the future CMB measurements.
