Generalized structure functions in semileptonic tau decays

In case there are tensor interactions beyond the SM in the low-energy effective Lagrangian, their interference with the SM V-A currents yields a contribution for tau decays into three or more mesons that cannot be included in the famous structure functions introduced by Kühn and Mirkes in their seminal 1992 paper. We present this generalization here, highlighting again the importance of measuring the (generalized) spectral functions, as being model-independent and exploiting maximally the data. This can be particularly relevant for CP and T violation studies with at least three mesons in the final state of the tau decay.

Indirect constraints on top quark operators from a global SMEFT analysis

We perform a model-independent analysis of top-philic New Physics scenarios, under the assumption that only effective operators involving top quarks are generated at tree level. Within the SMEFT framework, we derive indirect constraints on Wilson Coefficients by combining a large set of low-energy observables: B-meson and kaon decays, meson mixing observables, precision electroweak and Higgs measurements, anomalous magnetic moments, lepton flavour violating processes, lepton flavour universality tests, and measurements of the Cabibbo angle. We consider the renormalization group evolution of the operators and use the one-loop matching of the SMEFT onto the LEFT. The global analysis is then used to perform one-parameter, two-parameter, and global fits, as well as applications to explicit ultraviolet models. We find that the inclusion of measurements from different physics sectors reveals a strong interplay and complementarity among the observables. The resulting constraints are also compared to direct bounds provided by top quark productions at the LHC.

Short-distance constraints in hadronic-light-by-light for the muon $g-2$

In this talk recent progress in studying the short-distance properties of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $g-2$ is described. The intermediate and short-distance part is a major contributor to the error of the theoretical prediction as described in the recent white paper [1]. We have shown that the massless quark-loop is the first term in a systematic expansion at short-distances, a result already used in the white paper. Newer results conclude that both nonperturbative and perturbative corrections are under control. The talk describes these developments and how they fit in the total theoretical prediction for the muon $g-2$.

Evaluating CNNs on the Gestalt Principle of Closure

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely known for their outstanding performance in classification and regression tasks over high-dimensional data. This made them a popular and powerful tool for a large variety of applications in industry and academia. Recent publications show that seemingly easy classifaction tasks (for humans) can be very challenging for state of the art CNNs. An attempt to describe how humans perceive visual elements is given by the Gestalt principles. In this paper we evaluate AlexNet and GoogLeNet regarding their performance on classifying the correctness of the well known Kanizsa triangles, which heavily rely on the Gestalt principle of closure. Therefore we created various datasets containing valid as well as invalid variants of the Kanizsa triangle. Our findings suggest that perceiving objects by utilizing the principle of closure is very challenging for the applied network architectures but they appear to adapt to the effect of closure.

Confronting hadronic tau decays with non-leptonic kaon decays

In the chiral limit, the $D=6$ contribution to the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) of the $\mathrm{VV-AA}$ correlator of quark currents only depends on two vacuum condensates, which can be related to hadronic matrix elements associated to CP violation in non-leptonic kaon decays. We use those relations to determine $\langle(ππ)_{I=2}|\mathcal{Q}_{8}|K\rangle$, using the updated ALEPH spectral functions. Alternatively, we use those relations in the opposite direction. Taking the values of the matrix elements from the lattice to obtain the $D=6$ vacuum elements provides a new short-distance constraint which allows for an inclusive determination of $f_π$ and an updated value for the $D=8$ condensate.

Updated determination of $α_s(m_τ^2)$ from tau decays

Using the most recent release of the ALEPH $τ$ decay data, we present a very detailed phenomenological update of the $α_s(m_τ^2)$ determination. We have exploited the sensitivity to the strong coupling in many different ways, exploring several complementary methodologies. All determinations turn out to be in excellent agreement, allowing us to extract a very reliable value of the strong coupling. We find $α_{s}^{(n_f=3)}(m_τ^2) = 0.328 \pm 0.012$ which implies $α_{s}^{(n_f=5)}(M_Z^{2}) = 0.1197\pm 0.0014$. We critically revise previous work, and point out the problems flawing some recent analyses which claim slightly smaller values.
