On the rank of hypergeometric sheaves on higher dimensional tori

We prove an explicit formula for the generic rank of hypergeometric perverse sheaves on higher dimensional tori over a finite field, as defined by Gabber and Loeser. This allows to give an explicit estimate for the corresponding hypergeometric character sums for almost all primes $p$.

Finite monodromy of some two-parameter families of exponential sums

We determine the set of polynomials $f(x)\in k[x]$, where $k$ is a finite field, such that the local system on $\mathbb G_m^2$ which parametrizes the family of exponential sums $(s,t)\mapsto\sum_{x\in k}ψ(sf(x)+tx)$ has finite monodromy, in two cases: when $f(x)=x^d+λx^e$ is a binomial and when $f(x)=(x-α)^d(x-β)^e$ is of Belyi type.

Equidistribution and independence of Gauss sums

We prove a general independent equidistribution result for Gauss sums associated to $n$ monomials in $r$ variable multiplicative characters over a finite field, which generalizes several previous equidistribution results for Gauss and Jacobi sums. As an application, we show that any relation satisfied by these Gauss sums must be a combination of the conjugation relation $G(χ)G(\overlineχ)=\pm q$, Galois conjugation invariance and the Hasse-Davenport product formula.

On a generalization of Jacobi sums

We prove an estimate for multi-variable multiplicative character sums over affine subspaces of $\mathbb A^n_k$, which generalize the well known estimates for both classical Jacobi sums and one-variable polynomial multiplicative character sums.

An explicit evaluation of $\nth{10}$-power moment of quadratic Gauss sums and some applications

In this paper we have estimated one multi-variable character sum \begin{align*} \sum_{a=2}^{p-2}\sum_{b=1}^{p-1}\sum_{c=2}^{p-2}\sum_{d=1}^{p-1}\left(\frac{a^2-b^2}{p}\right)\left(\frac{b^2-1}{p}\right) \left(\frac{c^2-d^2}{p}\right)\left(\frac{d^2-1}{p}\right)\left(\frac{a^2c^2-1}{p}\right), \end{align*} for odd prime $p$. With the help of our estimate of the above character sum, we have studied the tenth power mean value of generalized quadratic Gauss sums using estimates for character sums and analytic methods.

Tensor and convolution direct image of $\ell$-adic sheaves

Given a Galois étale map of varieties $π:Y\to X$ and an $\ell$-adic sheaf or derived category object $P\in D^b_c(Y,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, we study two cohomological operations: the tensor direct image and (in the case of perverse sheaves) the convolution direct image, which give objects of $D^b_c(X,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, and can be used to improve the estimates on some partial exponential sums and the number of rational points on certain varieties.

A rigid local system with monodromy group the big Conway group 2.Co_1 and two others with monodromy group the Suzuki group 6.Suz

In the first three sections, we develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. In the fourth and fifth sections, we specialize to quite special classses of hypergeomtric sheaves. We give relatively "simple" formulas for their trace functions, and a criterion for them to have finite monodromy. In the next section, we prove that three of them have finite monodromy groups. We then give some results on finite complex linear groups. We next use these group theoretic results to show that one of our local systems, of rank $24$ in characteristic $p=2$, has the big Conway group $2.\mathrm{Co}_1$, in its irreducible orthogonal representation of degree $24$ as the automorphism group of the Leech lattice, as its arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups. Each of the other two, of rank $12$ in characteristic $p=3$, has the Suzuki group $6.\mathrm{Suz}$, in one of its irreducible representations of degree $12$ as the ${\mathbb Q}(ζ_3)$-automorphisms of the Leech lattice, as its arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups. In the final section, we pull back these local systems by $x \mapsto x^N$ maps to ${\mathbb A}^1$, and show that after pullback their arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups remain the same. Sadly the Leech lattice makes no appearance in our arguments.

Rigid local systems with monodromy group the Conway group Co_2

We first develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. Certain of their Kummer pullbacks extend to irreducible local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>0$. One of these, of rank $23$ in characteristic $p=3$, turns out to have the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_2$, in its irreducible orthogonal representation of degree $23$, as its arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups.

Rigid local systems with monodromy group the Conway group Co_3

We first develop some basic facts about certain sorts of rigid local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>0$. We then apply them to exhibit a number of rigid local systems of rank $23$ on the affine line in characteristic $p=3$ whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_3$ in its orthogonal irreducible representation of degree $23$.

A Rigid Local System with Monodromy Group 2.J_2

We exhibit a rigid local system of rank six on the affine line in characteristic $p=5$ whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite group $2.J_2$ ($J_2$ the Hall-Janko sporadic group) in one of its two (Galois-conjugate) irreducible representation of degree six.

Explicit local multiplicative convolution of l-adic sheaves

We give explicit formulas for the local multiplicative convolution functors which express the local monodromies of the convolution of two $\ell$-adic sheaves on the torus ${\mathbb G}_m$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field in terms of the local monodromies of the factors.

Decomposing Jacobians of Curves over Finite Fields in the Absence of Algebraic Structure

We consider the issue of when the L-polynomial of one curve over $\F_q$ divides the L-polynomial of another curve. We prove a theorem which shows that divisibility follows from a hypothesis that two curves have the same number of points over infinitely many extensions of a certain type, and one other assumption. We also present an application to a family of curves arising from a conjecture about exponential sums. We make our own conjecture about L-polynomials, and prove that this is equivalent to the exponential sums conjecture.

Katz-Radon transform of l-adic representations

We prove a simple explicit formula for the local Katz-Radon transform of an l-adic representation of the Galois group of the fraction field of a strictly henselian discrete valuation ring with positive residual characteristic, which can be defined as the local additive convolution with a fixed tame character. The formula is similar to one proved by D. Arinkin in the D-module setting, and answers a question posed by N. Katz.

Rationality of trace and norm L-functions

For a given l-adic sheaf F on a commutative algebraic group over a finite field k and an integer r we define the r-th local norm L-function of F at a point t in G(k) and prove its rationality. This function gives information on the sum of the local Frobenius traces of F over the points of G(k_r) (where k_r is the extension of degree r of k) with norm t. For G the one-dimensional affine line or the torus, these sums can in turn be used to estimate the number of rational points on curves or the absolute value of exponential sums which are invariant under a large group of translations or homotheties.

Local convolution of l-adic sheaves on the torus

For K and L two l-adic perverse sheaves on the one-dimensional torus over the algebraic closure of a finite field, we show that the local monodromies of their convolution K*L at its points of non-smoothness is completely determined by the local monodromies of K and L. This generalizes a previous result of N. Katz for the case where K and L are smooth, tame at 0 and totally wild at infinity.

Estimates for exponential sums with a large automorphism group

We prove some improvements of the classical Weil bound for one variable additive and multiplicative character sums associated to a polynomial over a finite field $k=\Fq$ for two classes of polynomials which are invariant under a large abelian group of automorphisms of the affine line $\AAA^1_k$: those invariant under translation by elements of $k$ and those invariant under homotheties with ratios in a large subgroup of the multiplicative group of $k$. In both cases, we are able to improve the bound by a factor of $\sqrt{q}$ over an extension of $k$ of cardinality sufficiently large compared to the degree of $f$.
