Anisotropic Extra Dimensions

We consider the scenario where in a five-dimensional theory, the extra spatial dimension has different scaling than the other four dimensions. We find background maximally symmetric solutions, when the bulk is filled with a cosmological constant and at the same time it has a three-brane embedded in it. These background solutions are reminiscent of Randall-Sundrum warped metrics, with bulk curvature depending on the parameters of the breaking of diffeomorphism invariance. Subsequently, we consider the scalar perturbation sector of the theory and show that it has certain pathologies and the striking feature that in the limit where the diffeomorphism invariance is restored, there remain ghost scalar mode(s) in the spectrum.

Black holes and stars in Horava-Lifshitz theory with projectability condition

We systematically study spherically symmetric static spacetimes filled with a fluid in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with the projectability condition, but without the detailed balance. We establish that when the spacetime is spatially Ricci flat the unique vacuum solution is the de Sitter Schwarzshcild solution, while when the spacetime has a nonzero constant curvature, there exist two different vacuum solutions; one is an (Einstein) static universe, and the other is a new spacetime. This latter spacetime is maximally symmetric and not flat. We find all the perfect fluid solutions for such spacetimes, in addition to a class of anisotropic fluid solutions of the spatially Ricci flat spacetimes. To construct spacetimes that represent stars, we investigate junction conditions across the surfaces of stars and obtain the general matching conditions with or without the presence of infinitely thin shells. It is remarkable that, in contrast to general relativity, the radial pressure of a star does not necessarily vanish on its surface even without the presence of a thin shell, due to the presence of high order derivative terms. Applying the junction conditions to our explicit solutions, we show that it is possible to match smoothly these solutions (all with nonzero radial pressures) to vacuum spacetimes without the presence of thin matter shells on the surfaces of stars.

Strong coupling in extended Horava-Lifshitz gravity

An extension of Horava-Lifshitz gravity was recently proposed in order to address the pathological behavior of the scalar mode all previous versions of the theory exhibit. We show that even in this new extension the strong coupling persists, casting doubts on whether such a model can constitute an interesting alternative to general relativity (GR).

The consistency of codimension-2 braneworlds and their cosmology

We study axially symmetric codimension-2 cosmology for a distributional braneworld fueled by a localised 4D perfect fluid, in a 6D Lovelock theory. We argue that only the matching conditions (dubbed topological) where the extrinsic curvature on the brane has no jump describe a pure codimension-2 brane. If there is discontinuity in the extrinsic curvature on the brane, this induces inevitably codimension-1 distributional terms. We study these topological matching conditions, together with constraints from the bulk equations evaluated at the brane position, for two cases of regularisation of the codimension-2 defect. First, for an arbitrary smooth regularisation of the defect and second for a ring regularisation which has a cusp in the angular part of the metric. For a cosmological ansatz, we see that in the first case the coupled system is not closed and requires input from the bulk equations away from the brane. The relevant bulk function, which is a time-dependent angular deficit, describes the energy exchange between the brane and the 6D bulk. On the other hand, for the ring regularisation case, the system is closed and there is no leakage of energy in the bulk. We demonstrate that the full set of matching conditions and field equations evaluated at the brane position are consistent, correcting some previous claim in the literature which used rather restrictive assumptions for the form of geometrical quantities close to the codimension-2 brane. We analyse the modified Friedmann equation and we see that there are certain corrections coming from the non-zero extrinsic curvature on the brane. We establish the presence of geometric self-acceleration and a possible curvature domination wedged in between the period of matter and self-acceleration eras as signatures of codimension-2 cosmology.

Properties of codimension-2 braneworlds in six-dimensional Lovelock theory

We consider maximally symmetric 3-branes embedded in a six-dimensional bulk spacetime with Lovelock dynamics. We study the properties of the solutions with respect to their induced curvature, their vacuum energy and their effective compactness in the extra dimensions. Some simple solutions are shown to give rise to self-accelerating braneworlds, whereas several others solutions have self-tuning properties. For the case of geometric self-acceleration we argue that the cross-over scale in between four-dimensional and higher-dimensional gravity and the scale of late-time geometric acceleration, fixed by the present horizon size, are related via the conical deficit angle of the six-dimensional bulk solution, which is a free parameter.

Codimension-2 brane inflation

We consider a probe codimension-2 brane inflation scenario in a warped six-dimensional flux compactification. Our background model is Salam-Sezgin gauged supergravity with codimension-2 brane sources, which preserve N=1 supersymmetry. The model has a modulus, which is stabilised by means of a cap regularisation of the codimension-2 singularities, with appropriate dilaton potentials on the ring interface of the caps with the bulk. We discuss the cosmological evolution of the world-volume of a probe codimension-2 brane when it moves along the radial direction of the internal space. In order to have slow-roll inflation, one needs the warping of the internal space to be weak, in contrast to the recent string inflation constructions with strong warping. We discuss the parameter range that the inflation is in agreement with the observationally inferred parameters and which furthermore is consistent with the probe brane approximation. We provide arguments pointing that the probe brane approximation is a good assumption if the probe brane is not exactly conical and show with a multibrane solution that the mild warping needed for a slow-roll inflation is not spoiled by the probe brane.

Self-properties of codimension-2 braneworlds

We consider four-dimensional de Sitter, flat and anti de Sitter branes embedded in a six-dimensional bulk spacetime whose dynamics is dictated by Lovelock theory. We find, applying a generalised version of Birkhoff's theorem, that all possible maximally symmetric braneworld solutions are embedded in Wick-rotated black hole spacetimes of Lovelock theory. These are warped solitonic spaces, where the horizons of the black hole geometries correspond to the possible positions of codimension-2 branes. The horizon temperature is related via conical singularities to the tension or vacuum energy of the branes. We classify the braneworld solutions for certain combinations of bulk parameters, according to their induced curvature, their vacuum energy and their effective compactness in the extra dimensions. The bulk Lovelock theory gives an induced gravity term on the brane, which, we argue, generates four-dimensional gravity up to some distance scale. As a result, some simple solutions, such as the Lovelock corrected Schwarzschild black hole in six dimensions, are shown to give rise to self-accelerating braneworlds. We also find that several other solutions have self-tuning properties. Finally, we present regular gravitational instantons of Lovelock gravity and comment on their significance.

Supersymmetric codimension-two branes in six-dimensional gauged supergravity

We consider the six-dimensional Salam-Sezgin supergravity in the presence of codimension-2 branes. In the case that the branes carry only tension, we provide a way to supersymmetrise them by adding appropriate localised Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and localised corrections to the Chern-Simons term and modifying accordingly the fermionic supersymmetry transformations. The resulting brane action has N=1 supersymmetry (SUSY). We find the axisymmetric vacua of the system and show that one has unwarped background solutions with "football"-shaped extra dimensions which always respect N=1 SUSY for any value of the equal brane tensions, in contrast with the non-supersymmetric brane action background. Finally, we generically find multiple zero modes of the gravitino in this background and discuss how one could obtain a single chiral zero mode present in the low energy spectrum.

Induced cosmology on a regularized brane in six-dimensional flux compactification

We consider a six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell system compactified in an axisymmetric two-dimensional space with one capped regularized conical brane of codimension one. We study the cosmological evolution which is induced on the regularized brane as it moves in between known static bulk and cap solutions. Looking at the resulting Friedmann equation, we see that the brane cosmology at high energies is dominated by a five-dimensional rho^2 energy density term. At low energies, we obtain a Friedmann equation with a term linear to the energy density with, however, negative coefficient in the small four-brane radius limit (i.e. with negative effective Newton's constant). We discuss ways out of this problem.

Gravitino in six-dimensional warped supergravity

We consider the gravitino spectrum for the general warped solution in a specific six-dimensional gauged supergravity. We find that although the brane tensions introduced at the conical singularities break the bulk supersymmetry explicitly, massless modes of gravitino can exist with a nontrivial wave function profile, due to a nonzero U(1)_R gauge flux. We also compute the wave function and the mass spectrum of Kaluza-Klein massive modes of the gravitino explicitly. We show that the introduction of a gravitino mass term on a regularized brane can give a suppressed effective gravitino mass compared to the compactification scale, due to the delocalization of the wave function of the zero-mode gravitino.

Regularization of conical singularities in warped six-dimensional compactifications

We study the regularization of the codimension-2 singularities in six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell axisymmetric models with warping. These singularities are replaced by codimension-1 branes of a ring form, situated around the axis of symmetry. We assume that there is a brane scalar field with Goldstone dynamics, which is known to generate a brane energy momentum tensor of a particular structure necessary for the above regularization to be successful. We study these compactifications in both a non-supersymmetric and a supersymmetric setting. We see that in the non-supersymmetric case, there is a restriction to the admissible warpings and furthermore to the quantum numbers of the bulk gauge field and the brane scalar field. On the contrary, in the supersymmetric case, the warping can be arbitrary.

Scalar mode analysis of the warped Salam-Sezgin model

We study the scalar perturbation sector of the general axisymmetric warped Salam-Sezgin model with codimension-2 branes. We focus on the perturbations which mix with the dilaton. We show that the scalar fluctuations analysis can be reduced to studying two scalar modes of constant wavefunction, plus modes of non-constant wavefunction which obey a single Schroedinger equation. From the obtained explicit solution of the scalar modes, we point out the importance of the non-constant modes in describing the four dimensional effective theory. This observation remains true for the unwarped case and was neglected in the relevant literature. Furthermore, we show that the warped solutions are free of instabilities.

Cosmological Evolution of a Purely Conical Codimension-2 Brane World

We study the cosmological evolution of isotropic matter on an infinitely thin conical codimension-two brane-world. Our analysis is based on the boundary dynamics of a six-dimensional model in the presence of an induced gravity term on the brane and a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. With the assumption that the bulk contains only a cosmological constant Lambda_B, we find that the isotropic evolution of the brane-universe imposes a tuned relation between the energy density and the brane equation of state. The evolution of the system has fixed points (attractors), which correspond to a final state of radiation for Lambda_B=0 and to de Sitter state for Lambda_B>0. Furthermore, considering anisotropic matter on the brane, the tuning of the parameters is lifted, and new regions of the parametric space are available for the cosmological evolution of the brane-universe. The analysis of the dynamics of the system shows that, the isotropic fixed points remain attractors of the system, and for values of Lambda_B which give acceptable cosmological evolution of the equation of state, the line of isotropic tuning is a very weak attractor. The initial conditions, in this case, need to be fine tuned to have an evolution with acceptably small anisotropy.

Brane-bulk matter relation for a purely conical codimension-2 brane world

We study gravity on an infinitely thin codimension-2 brane world, with purely conical singularities and in the presence of an induced gravity term on the brane. We show that in this approximation, the energy momentum tensor of the bulk is strongly related to the energy momentum tensor of the brane and thus the gravity dynamics on the brane are induced by the bulk content. This is in contrast with the gravity dynamics on a codimension-1 brane. We show how this strong result is relaxed after including a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk.

Brane solutions of a spherical sigma model in six dimensions

We explore solutions of six dimensional gravity coupled to a non-linear sigma model, in the presence of co-dimension two branes. We investigate the compactifications induced by a spherical scalar manifold and analyze the conditions under which they are of finite volume and singularity free. We discuss the issue of single-valuedness of the scalar fields and provide some special embedding of the scalar manifold to the internal space which solves this problem. These brane solutions furnish some self-tuning features, however they do not provide a satisfactory explanation of the vanishing of the effective four dimensional cosmological constant. We discuss the properties of this model in relation with the self-tuning example based on a hyperbolic sigma model.

Spherically symmetric spacetimes in massive gravity

We explore spherically symmetric stationary solutions, generated by ``stars'' with regular interiors, in purely massive gravity. We reexamine the claim that the resummation of non-linear effects can cure, in a domain near the source, the discontinuity exhibited by the linearized theory as the mass m of the graviton tends to zero. First, we find analytical difficulties with this claim, which appears not to be robust under slight changes in the form of the mass term. Second, by numerically exploring the inward continuation of the class of asymptotically flat solutions, we find that, when m is ``small'', they all end up in a singularity at a finite radius, well outside the source, instead of joining some conjectured ``continuous'' solution near the source. We reopen, however, the possibility of reconciling massive gravity with phenomenology by exhibiting a special class of solutions, with ``spontaneous symmetry breaking'' features, which are close, near the source, to general relativistic solutions and asymptote, for large radii, a de Sitter solution of curvature ~m^2.

Brane-World Multigravity

In this thesis, we discuss the idea of multigravity, namely the possibility that a significant component of gravity that we feel at intermediate distances (1 mm < r < 10^26 cm) is due to massive but ultralight gravitons. We demonstrate how this phenomenon can be realized in brane-world models in a spacetime with more than four dimensions and discuss how modifications of gravity at cosmological scales emerge as a consequence. Firstly, we consider five dimensional multigravity models with flat branes. We see how the existence of freely moving negative tension branes gives rise to ultralight graviton Kaluza-Klein states. Secondly, we study the moduli corresponding to the position of the branes and the size of the extra dimension, the radions and the dilaton respectively. We show that the radions corresponding to negative tension branes have wrong sign kinetic term. We also derive a stabilization condition for the dilaton in a brane model with general bulk scalar field dynamics. Thirdly, we show how we can reproduce the five dimensional multigravity models with Anti-de Sitter branes of positive tension only. Moreover, we demonstrate how the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity can be circumvented at tree level in Anti-de Sitter space. Finally, we discuss how the above multigravity models can be replicated in six dimensions with flat positive tension branes. This last possibility is the first theoretically and phenomenologically viable realization of the multigravity scenario.

Radion in Multibrane World

The radion dynamics related to the presence of moving branes with both positive or negative tensions is studied in the linearized approximation. The radion effective Lagrangian is computed for a compact system with three branes and in particular we examine the decompactification limit when one brane is sent to infinity. In the non-compact case we calculate the coupling of the gravitational modes (graviton, dilaton and radion) to matter on the branes. The character of gravity on the two branes for all possible combinations of brane tensions is also discussed. It turns out that one can have a normalizable dilaton mode even in the non-compact case. Finally, we speculate on the role of moving branes as a possible source of radion emission.
