New code for quasiequilibrium initial data of binary neutron stars: Corotating, irrotational and slowly spinning systems

We present the extension of our \cocal~- Compact Object CALculator - code to compute general-relativistic initial data for binary compact-star systems. In particular, we construct quasiequilibrium initial data for equal-mass binaries with spins that are either aligned or antialigned with the orbital angular momentum. The Isenberg-Wilson-Mathews formalism is adopted and the constraint equations are solved using the representation formula with a suitable choice of a Green's function. We validate the new code with solutions for equal-mass binaries and explore its capabilities for a wide range of compactnesses, from a white dwarf binary with compactness $\sim 10^{-4}$, up to a highly relativistic neutron-star binary with compactness $\sim 0.22$. We also present a comparison with corotating and irrotational quasiequilibrium sequences from the spectral code \lorene [Taniguchi and Gourgoulhon, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 66}, 104019 (2002)] and with different compactness, showing that the results from the two codes agree to a precision of the order of $0.05\%$. Finally, we present equilibria for spinning configurations with a nuclear-physics equation of state in a piecewise polytropic representation.

Equilibrium solutions of relativistic rotating stars with mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields

Stationary and axisymmetric solutions of relativistic rotating stars with strong mixed poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields are obtained numerically. Because of the mixed components of the magnetic field, the underlying stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes are no longer circular. These configurations are computed from the full set of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, Maxwell's equations and from first integrals and integrability conditions of the magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium equations. After a brief introduction of the formulation of the problem, we present the first results for highly deformed magnetized rotating compact stars.

The initial state of generalized radiation universes

We use asymptotic methods to study the early time stability of isotropic and homogeneous solutions filled with radiation which are close initially to the exact, flat, radiation solution in quadratic lagrangian theories of gravity. For such models, we analyze all possible modes of approach to the initial singularity and prove the essential uniqueness and stability of the resulting asymptotic scheme in all cases except perhaps that of the conformally invariant Bach-Weyl gravity. We also provide a formal series representation valid near the initial singularity of the general solution of these models and show that this is dominated at early times by a form in which both curvature and radiation play a subdominant role. We also discuss the implications of these results for the generic initial state of the theory.

Generic regular universes in higher order gravity theories

We review recent results on the Cauchy-Kowalevsky structure of theories with higher derivatives in vacuum. We prove genericity of regularity of solutions under the assumption of analyticity. Our approach is framed in the general context of formal series expansions of the metric around a regular point.

Asymptotic states of generalized universes with higher derivatives

We review ongoing research related to the asymptotic dynamics of isotropic universes in theories with higher derivatives, especially near the initial singularity. We treat two major cases, that is universes in vacuum, and also those filled with radiation using the method of asymptotic splittings of vector fields. Our solutions have the form of formal Fuchsian-type series for the basic unknowns and are valid near collapse or big rip regimes asymptotically.

New code for equilibriums and quasiequilibrium initial data of compact objects. II. Convergence tests and comparisons of binary black hole initial data

COCAL is a code for computing equilibriums or quasiequilibrium initial data of single or binary compact objects based on finite difference methods. We present the results of supplementary convergence tests of COCAL code using time symmetric binary black hole data (Brill-Lindquist solution). Then, we compare the initial data of binary black holes on the conformally flat spatial slice obtained from COCAL and KADATH, where KADATH is a library for solving a wide class of problems in theoretical physics including relativistic compact objects with spectral methods. Data calculated from the two codes converge nicely towards each other, for close as well as largely separated circular orbits of binary black holes. Finally, as an example, a sequence of equal mass binary black hole initial data with corotating spins is calculated and compared with data in the literature.

Binary black hole circular orbits computed with COCAL

In this work we present our first results of binary black hole circular orbits using {\sc cocal}, the Compact Object CALculator. Using the 3+1 decomposition five equations are being solved under the assumptions of conformal flatness and maximal slicing. Excision is used and the appropriate apparent horizon boundary conditions are applied. The orbital velocity is determined by imposing a Schwarzschild behaviour at infinity. A sequence of equal mass black holes is obtained and its main physical characteristics are calculated.

A new code for equilibriums and quasiequilibrium initial data of compact objects

We present a new code, named COCAL - Compact Object CALculator, for the computation of equilibriums and quasiequilibrium initial data sets of single or binary compact objects of all kinds. In the cocal code, those solutions are calculated on one or multiple spherical coordinate patches covering the initial hypersurface up to the asymptotic region. The numerical method used to solve field equations written in elliptic form is an adaptation of self-consistent field iterations in which Green's integral formula is computed using multipole expansions and standard finite difference schemes. We extended the method so that it can be used on a computational domain with excised regions for a black hole and a binary companion. Green's functions are constructed for various types of boundary conditions imposed at the surface of the excised regions for black holes. The numerical methods used in cocal are chosen to make the code simpler than any other recent initial data codes, accepting the second order accuracy for the finite difference schemes. We perform convergence tests for time symmetric single black hole data on a single coordinate patch, and binary black hole data on multiple patches. Then, we apply the code to obtain spatially conformally flat binary black hole initial data using boundary conditions including the one based on the existence of equilibrium apparent horizons.

Asymptotics of flat, radiation universes in quadratic gravity

We consider the asymptotics of flat, radiation-dominated isotropic universes in four-dimensional theories with quadratic curvature corrections which may arise when contributions related to the string parameter $α'$ are switched on. We show that all such universes are singular initially, and calculate all early time asymptotics using the method of asymptotic splittings. We also examine the late time asymptotic behaviour of these models and show that there are no solutions which diverge as $e^{t^2}$, the known radiation solution of general relativity is essentially the only late time asymptotic possibility in these models.

Flat, radiation universes with quadratic corrections and asymptotic analysis

It was shown long ago by T. V. Ruzmaikina and A. A. Ruzmaikin that within the framework of a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model quadratic corrections of the gravitational field cannot provide solutions that are both regular initially and go over to Friedmann type at later times. We find here, by applying a dynamical systems approach, the general form of the solution to this class of models in the neighborhood of the initial singularity under the above conditions.
