Minimum $b_2$ of symplectic fillings of lens spaces

We classify lens spaces for which the canonical negative-definite plumbing has minimal $b_2$ among all symplectic fillings of the standard contact structure. The classification is given by 4 infinite families of "forbidden subgraphs" in a manner similar to Aceto-McCoy-Park's work on smooth negative-definite fillings of lens spaces. In particular, no classification of this form can be given using a finite list of forbidden configurations, highlighting a difference between symplectic fillings and smooth negative-definite fillings of lens spaces.

Integer surgeries rational homology cobordant to lens spaces

The Cyclic Surgery Theorem and Moser's work on surgeries on torus knots imply that for any non-trivial knot in $S^3$, there are at most two integer surgeries that produce a lens space. This paper investigates how many positive integer surgeries on a given knot in $S^3$ can produce a manifold rational homology cobordant to a lens space. Tools include Greene and McCoy's work on changemaker lattices which come from Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants, and Aceto-Celoria-Park's work on rational cobordisms and integral homology which is based on Lisca's work on lens spaces.

Forbidden configurations and definite fillings of lens spaces

We study definite fillings of lens spaces. We classify the lens spaces $L(p,q)$ for which every smooth negative-definite filling $X$ satisfies \[ b_2(X)\ge b_2(X(p,q))-1, \] where $X(p,q)$ denotes the canonical negative-definite plumbing. The classification is given by 17 "forbidden configurations" that cannot appear as induced subgraphs of the canonical plumbing graph. More generally, we introduce a combinatorial framework that encodes the lattice embedding information coming from the dual plumbing of $X(p,q)$, and we prove that it is governed by a finite set of minimal forbidden configurations. We also discuss consequences for symplectic fillings of lens spaces and for smoothings of cyclic quotient singularities.
