Energy fluctuations of finite free-electron Fermi gas

We discuss the energy distribution of free-electron Fermi-gas, a problem with a textbook solution of Gaussian energy fluctuations in the limit of a large system. We find that for a small system, characterized solely by its heat capacity $C$, the distribution can be solved analytically, and it is both skewed and it vanishes at low energies, exhibiting a sharp drop to zero at the energy corresponding to the filled Fermi sea. The results are relevant from the experimental point of view, since the predicted non-Gaussian effects become pronounced when $C/k_B \lesssim 10^3$ ($k_B$ is the Boltzmann constant), a regime that can be easily achieved for instance in mesoscopic metallic conductors at sub-kelvin temperatures.

Renormalization of Generalized KPZ equation

We use Renormalization Group to prove local well posedness for a generalized KPZ equation introduced by H. Spohn in the context of stochastic hydrodynamics. The equation requires the addition of counter terms diverging with a cutoff $ε$ as $ε^{-1}$ and $\logε^{-1}$.

Basic properties of critical lognormal multiplicative chaos

We study one-dimensional exact scaling lognormal multiplicative chaos measures at criticality. Our main results are the determination of the exact asymptotics of the right tail of the distribution of the total mass of the measure, and an almost sure upper bound for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution function of the measure. We also find an almost sure lower bound for the increments of the measure almost everywhere with respect to the measure itself, strong enough to show that the measure is supported on a set of Hausdorff dimension $0$.

Liouville Quantum Gravity on the Riemann sphere

In this paper, we rigorously construct $2d$ Liouville Quantum Field Theory on the Riemann sphere introduced in the 1981 seminal work by Polyakov "Quantum Geometry of bosonic strings". We also establish some of its fundamental properties like conformal covariance under PSL$_2(\mathbb{C})$-action, Seiberg bounds, KPZ scaling laws, KPZ formula and the Weyl anomaly (Polyakov-Ray-Singer) formula for Liouville Quantum Gravity.

Renormalizability of Liouville Quantum Gravity at the Seiberg bound

Liouville Quantum Field Theory can be seen as a probabilistic theory of 2d Riemannian metrics $e^{ϕ(z)}dz^2$, conjecturally describing scaling limits of discrete $2d$-random surfaces. The law of the random field $ϕ$ in LQFT depends on weights $α\in \mathbb{R}$ that in classical Riemannian geometry parametrize power law singularities in the metric. A rigorous construction of LQFT has been carried out in \cite{DKRV} in the case when the weights are below the so called Seiberg bound: $α<Q$ where $Q$ parametrizes the random surface model in question. These correspond to conical singularities in the classical setup. In this paper, we construct LQFT in the case when the Seiberg bound is saturated which can be seen as the probabilistic version of Riemann surfaces with cusp singularities. Their construction involves methods from Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos theory at criticality.

Renormalization Group and Stochastic PDE's

We develop a Renormalization Group (RG) approach to the study of existence and uniqueness of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations driven by space-time white noise. As an example we prove well-posedness and independence of regularization for the $ϕ^4$ model in three dimensions recently studied by Hairer. Our method is "Wilsonian": the RG allows to construct effective equations on successive space time scales. Renormalization is needed to control the parameters in these equations. In particular no theory of multiplication of distributions enters our approach.

Critical Mandelbrot Cascades

We study Mandelbrot's multiplicative cascade measures at the critical temperature. As has been recently shown by Barral, Rhodes and Vargas (arXiv:1203.5445), an appropriately normalized sequence of cascade measures converges weakly in probability to a nontrivial limit measure. We prove that these limit measures have no atoms and give bounds for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution of the measure. Using the earlier work of Barral and Seuret (2007), we compute the multifractal spectrum of the measures. We also extend the result of Benjamini and Schramm (2009), in which the KPZ formula from quantum gravity is validated for the high temperature cascade measures, to the critical and low temperature cases.

Diffusion in Energy Conserving Coupled Maps

We consider a dynamical system consisting of subsystems indexed by a lattice. Each subsystem has one conserved degree of freedom ("energy") the rest being uniformly hyperbolic. The subsystems are weakly coupled together so that the sum of the subsystem energies remains conserved. We prove that the subsystem energies satisfy the diffusion equation in a suitable scaling limit.

Ergodicity of Two Dimensional Turbulence

We review the work of Hairer and Mattingly on ergodicity of two dimensional Navier-Stokes dynamics and discuss some open mathematical problems in the theory of 2d turbulence.

Origins of Diffusion

We consider a dynamical system consisting of subsystems indexed by a lattice. Each subsystem has one conserved degree of freedom ("energy") the rest being uniformly hyperbolic. The subsystems are weakly coupled together so that the sum of the subsystem energies remains conserved. We prove that the long time dynamics of the subsystem energies is diffusive.

Random walks in space time mixing environments

We prove that random walks in random environments, that are exponentially mixing in space and time, are almost surely diffusive, in the sense that their scaling limit is given by the Wiener measure.

Approach to equilibrium for the phonon Boltzmann equation

We study the asymptotics of solutions of the Boltzmann equation describing the kinetic limit of a lattice of classical interacting anharmonic oscillators. We prove that, if the initial condition is a small perturbation of an equilibrium state, and vanishes at infinity, the dynamics tends diffusively to equilibrium. The solution is the sum of a local equilibrium state, associated to conserved quantities that diffuse to zero, and fast variables that are slaved to the slow ones. This slaving implies the Fourier law, which relates the induced currents to the gradients of the conserved quantities.

Fourier's Law from Closure Equations

We give a rigorous derivation of Fourier's law from a system of closure equations for a nonequilibrium stationary state of a Hamiltonian system of coupled oscillators subjected to heat baths on the boundary. The local heat flux is proportional to the temperature gradient with a temperature dependent heat conductivity and the stationary temperature exhibits a nonlinear profile.

On the derivation of Fourier's law for coupled anharmonic oscillators

We study the Hamiltonian system made of weakly coupled anharmonic oscillators arranged on a three dimensional lattice and subjected to a stochastic forcing mimicking heat baths of temperatures T_1 and T_2 on the hyperplanes at x_1=0 and N. We introduce a truncation of the Hopf equations describing the stationary state of the system which leads to a nonlinear equation for the two-point stationary correlation functions. We prove that these equations have a unique solution which, for N large, is approximately a local equlibrium state satisfying Fourier law that relates the heat current to a local temperature gradient. The temperature exhibits a nonlinear profile.

Scaling, renormalization and statistical conservation laws in the Kraichnan model of turbulent advection

We present a systematic way to compute the scaling exponents of the structure functions of the Kraichnan model of turbulent advection in a series of powers of $ξ$, adimensional coupling constant measuring the degree of roughness of the advecting velocity field. We also investigate the relation between standard and renormalization group improved perturbation theory. The aim is to shed light on the relation between renormalization group methods and the statistical conservation laws of the Kraichnan model, also known as zero modes.

Anomalous scaling for 3d Cahn-Hilliard fronts

We prove the stability of the one dimensional kink solution of the Cahn-Hilliard equation under d-dimensional perturbations for d > 2. We also establish a novel scaling behavior of the large time asymptotics of the solution. The leading asymptotics of the solution is characterized by a length scale proportional to the cubic root of t instead of the usual square root of t scaling typical to parabolic problems.

Lagrangian dispersion in Gaussian self-similar ensembles

We analyze the Lagrangian flow in a family of simple Gaussian scale-invariant velocity ensembles that exhibit both spatial roughness and temporal correlations. We show that the behavior of the Lagrangian dispersion of pairs of fluid particles in such models is determined by the scale dependence of the ratio between the correlation time of velocity differences and the eddy turnover time. For a non-trivial scale dependence, the asymptotic regimes of the dispersion at small and large scales are described by the models with either rapidly decorrelating or frozen velocities. In contrast to the decorrelated case, known as the Kraichnan model and exhibiting Lagrangian flows with deterministic or stochastic trajectories, fast separating or trapped together, the frozen model is poorly understood. We examine the pair dispersion behavior in its simplest, one-dimensional version, reinforcing analytic arguments by numerical analysis. The collected information about the pair dispersion statistics in the limiting models allows to partially predict the extent of different phases and the scaling properties of the Lagrangian flow in the model with time-correlated velocities.

Renormalization Group and the Melnikov Problem for PDE's

We give a new proof of persistence of quasi-periodic, low dimensional elliptic tori in infinite dimensional systems. The proof is based on a renormalization group iteration that was developed recently in [BGK] to address the standard KAM problem, namely, persistence of invariant tori of maximal dimension in finite dimensional, near integrable systems. Our result covers situations in which the so called normal frequencies are multiple. In particular, it provides a new proof of the existence of small-amplitude, quasi-periodic solutions of nonlinear wave equations with periodic boundary conditions.
