Median porosity is quasiconformally invariant

A set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is median porous if the logarithm of its distance function has bounded mean oscillation. We show that this property is preserved under quasiconformal mappings. In particular, median porosity is quasiconformally invariant. We also show that the stronger notion of weak porosity, by contrast, is not quasiconformally invariant.

Parabolic weak porosity and parabolic Muckenhoupt distance functions

We develop the parabolic weak porosity to characterize the parabolic Muckenhoupt $A_1$ weights with time-lag. Our main result shows that a nonempty closed set is parabolic weakly porous if and only if the parabolic distance function of the set to a negative power is in the parabolic Muckenhoupt $A_1$ class. We apply a novel stopping time argument in combination with the translation and doubling results for the parabolic weakly porous sets.

Limits at infinity for Hajłasz-Sobolev functions in metric spaces

We study limits at infinity for homogeneous Hajlasz-Sobolev functions defined on uniformly perfect metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. We prove that a quasicontinuous representative of such a function has a pointwise limit at infinity outside an exceptional set, defined in terms of a variational relative capacity. Our framework refines earlier approaches that relied on Hausdorff content rather than relative capacity, and it extends previous results for homogeneous Newtonian and fractional Sobolev functions.

Self-improving properties of weighted norm inequalities on metric measure spaces

This work discusses self-improving properties of the Muckenhoupt condition and weighted norm inequalities for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function on metric measure spaces with a doubling measure. Our main result provides direct proofs of these properties by applying a Whitney covering argument and a technique inspired by the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition. In particular, this approach does not rely on reverse Hölder inequalities.

Weakly porous sets and Muckenhoupt $A_p$ distance functions

We examine the class of weakly porous sets in Euclidean spaces. As our first main result we show that the distance weight $w(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,E)^{-α}$ belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_1$, for some $α>0$, if and only if $E\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is weakly porous. We also give a precise quantitative version of this characterization in terms of the so-called Muckenhoupt exponent of $E$. When $E$ is weakly porous, we obtain a similar quantitative characterization of $w\in A_p$, for $1<p<\infty$, as well. At the end of the paper, we give an example of a set $E\subset\mathbb{R}$ which is not weakly porous but for which $w\in A_p\setminus A_1$ for every $0<α<1$ and $1<p<\infty$.

Fractional Hardy inequalities and capacity density

We prove that a pointwise fractional Hardy inequality implies a fractional Hardy inequality, defined via a Gagliardo-type seminorm. The proof consists of two main parts. The first one is to characterize the pointwise fractional Hardy inequality in terms of a fractional capacity density condition. The second part is to show the deep open-endedness or self-improvement property of the fractional capacity density, which we accomplish in the setting of a complete geodesic space equipped with a doubling measure. These results are new already in the standard Euclidean setting.

Classifying Triebel-Lizorkin capacities in metric spaces

We study non-local or fractional capacities in metric measure spaces. Our main goal is to clarify the relations between relative Hajlasz-Triebel-Lizorkin capacities, potentional Triebel-Lizorkin capacities, and metric space variants of Riesz capacities. As an application of our results, we obtain a characterization of a Hajlasz-Triebel-Lizorkin capacity density condition, which is based on an earlier characterization of a Riesz capacity density condition in terms of Hausdorff contents.

Characterization of the upper Assouad codimension

We present a new notion, the upper Aikawa codimension, and establish its equivalence with the upper Assouad codimension in a metric space with a doubling measure. To achieve this result, we first prove variant of a local fractional Hardy inequality.

Capacities and density conditions in metric spaces

We examine the relations between different capacities in the setting of a metric measure space. First, we prove a comparability result for the Riesz $(β,p)$-capacity and the relative Hajlasz $(β,p)$-capacity, for $1<p<\infty$ and $0<β\le 1$, under a suitable kernel estimate related to the Riesz potential. Then we show that in geodesic spaces the corresponding capacity density conditions are equivalent even without assuming the kernel estimate. In the last part of the paper, we compare the relative Hajlasz $(1,p)$-capacity to the relative variational $p$-capacity.

On the BBM-phenomenon in fractional Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities with weights

In this paper we unify and improve some of the results of Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu and the weighted Poincaré-Sobolev estimate by Fabes, Kenig and Serapioni. More precisely, we get weighted counterparts of the Poincaré-Sobolev type inequality and also of the Hardy type inequality in the fractional case under some mild natural restrictions. A main feature of the results we obtain is the fact that we keep track of the behaviour of the constants involved when the fractional parameter approaches to $1$. Our main method is based on techniques coming from harmonic analysis related to the self-improving property of generalized Poincaré inequalities.

The Hajłasz capacity density condition is self-improving

We prove a self-improvement property of a capacity density condition for a nonlocal Hajlasz gradient in complete geodesic spaces. The proof relates the capacity density condition with boundary Poincaré inequalities, adapts Keith-Zhong techniques for establishing local Hardy inequalities and applies Koskela-Zhong arguments for proving self-improvement properties of local Hardy inequalities. This leads to a characterization of the Hajlasz capacity density condition in terms of a strict upper bound on the upper Assouad codimension of the underlying set, which shows the self-improvement property of the Hajlasz capacity density condition.

A framework for fractional Hardy inequalities

We provide a general framework for fractional Hardy inequalities. Our framework covers, for instance, fractional inequalities related to the Dirichlet forms of some Lévy processes, and weighted fractional inequalities on irregular open sets.

Fractional Poincaré and localized Hardy inequalities on metric spaces

We prove fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities, capacitary versions of fractional Poincaré inequalities, and pointwise and localized fractional Hardy inequalities in a metric space equipped with a doubling measure. Our results generalize and extend earlier work where such inequalities have been considered in the Euclidean spaces or in the non-fractional setting in metric spaces. The results concerning pointwise and localized variants of fractional Hardy inequalities are new even in the Euclidean case.

Hardy-Sobolev inequalities and weighted capacities in metric spaces

Let $Ω$ be an open set in a metric measure space $X$. Our main result gives an equivalence between the validity of a weighted Hardy-Sobolev inequality in $Ω$ and quasiadditivity of a weighted capacity with respect to Whitney covers of $Ω$. Important ingredients in the proof include the use of a discrete convolution as a capacity test function and a Maz'ya type characterization of weighted Hardy-Sobolev inequalities.

Weighted norm inequalities in a bounded domain by the sparse domination method

We prove a local two-weight Poincaré inequality for cubes using the sparse domination method that has been influential in harmonic analysis. The proof involves a localized version of the Fefferman--Stein inequality for the sharp maximal function. By establishing a local-to-global result in a bounded domain satisfying a Boman chain condition, we show a two-weight $p$-Poincaré inequality in such domains. As an application we show that certain nonnegative supersolutions of the $p$-Laplace equation and distance weights are $p$-admissible in a bounded domain, in the sense that they support versions of the $p$-Poincaré inequality.

Self-improvement of weighted pointwise inequalities on open sets

We prove a general self-improvement property for a family of weighted pointwise inequalities on open sets, including pointwise Hardy inequalities with distance weights. For this purpose we introduce and study the classes of $p$-Poincaré and $p$-Hardy weights for an open set $Ω\subset X$, where $X$ is a metric measure space. We also apply the self-improvement of weighted pointwise Hardy inequalities in connection with usual integral versions of Hardy inequalities.
