Vertex algebras related to regular representations of $SL_2$

We construct a family of potentially quasi-lisse (non-rational) vertex algebras, denoted by $\mathcal{C}_p$, $p \geq 2$, which are closely related to the vertex algebra of chiral differential operators on $SL(2)$ at level $-2+\frac{1}{p}$. We prove that for $p = 3$, there is an isomorphism between $\mathcal{C}_3$ and the affine vertex algebra $L_{-5/3}(\mathfrak{g}_2)$ from Deligne's series. Moreover, we also establish isomorphisms between $\mathcal{C}_4$ and $\mathcal{C}_5$ and certain affine ${W}$-algebras of types $F_4$ and $E_8$, respectively. In this way, we resolve the problem of decomposing certain conformal embeddings of affine vertex algebras into affine ${W}$-algebras. An important feature is that $\mathcal{C}_p$ is $\frac{1}{2} \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$-graded with finite-dimensional graded subspaces and convergent characters. Therefore, for all $p \geq 2$, we show that the characters of $\mathcal{C}_p$ exhibit modularity, supporting the conjectural quasi-lisse property.

Modularity of Nahm Sums for the Tadpole Diagram

We prove Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for the Nahm sums associated with the tadpole Cartan matrix of rank $3$. These identities reveal the modularity of these sums, and thereby we confirm a conjecture of Penn, Calinescu and the first author in this case. We show that these Nahm sums together with some shifted sums can be combined into a vector-valued modular function on the full modular group. We also present some conjectures for a general rank.

$S_3$-Permutation Orbifolds of Virasoro Vertex Algebras

In this paper, a continuation of \cite{MPS}, we investigate the $S_3$-orbifold subalgebra of $(\mathcal{V}_c)^{\otimes 3}$, that is, we consider the $S_3$-fixed point vertex subalgebra of the tensor product of three copies of the universal Virasoro vertex operator algebras $\mathcal{V}_c$. Our main result is construction of a minimal, strong set of generators of this subalgebra for any generic values of $c$. More precisely, we show that this vertex algebra is of type $(2,4,6^2,8^2,9,10^2,11,12^3)$. We also investigate two prominent examples of simple $S_3$-orbifold algebras corresponding to central charges $c=\frac12$ (Ising model) and $c=-\frac{22}{5}$ (i.e. $(2,5)$-minimal model). We prove that the former is a new unitary $W$-algebra of type $(2,4,6,8)$ and the latter is isomorphic to the affine simple $W$-algebra of type $\frak{g}_2$ at non-admissible level $-\frac{19}{6}$. We also provide another version of this isomorphism using the affine $W$-algebra of type $\frak{g}_2$ coming from a subregular nilpotent element.

Higher Depth False Modular Forms

False theta functions are functions that are closely related to classical theta functions and mock theta functions. In this paper, we study their modular properties at all ranks by forming modular completions analogous to modular completions of indefinite theta functions of any signature and thereby develop a structure parallel to the recently developed theory of higher depth mock modular forms. We then demonstrate this theoretical base on a number of examples up to depth three coming from characters of modules for the vertex algebra $W^0(p)_{A_n}$, $1 \leq n \leq 3$, and from $\hat{Z}$-invariants of $3$-manifolds associated with gauge group $\mathrm{SU}(3)$.

Generalized $q$-MZVs and Characters of Vertex Algebras

We analyze three related families of $q$-series arising from characters of vertex (super)algebras. More precisely, we consider: (i) graph series and characters of principal subspaces associated with arc algebras; (ii) characters, or indices, of class-$\mathcal{S}$ vertex operator algebras in the context of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT; and (iii) supercharacters of the $\mathcal{U}$ family of vertex superalgebras and their quasi-modular properties. Along the way, we introduce a family of multiple $q$-zeta values associated with simple Lie algebras and present their conjecturalproperties.

On certain identities involving Nahm-type sums with double poles

We prove certain Nahm-type sum representations for the (odd modulus) Andrews-Gordon identities, the (even modulus) Andrews-Bressoud identities, and Rogers' false theta functions. These identities are motivated on one hand by a recent work of C. Jennings-Shaffer and one of us on double pole series, and, on the other hand, by Córdova, Gaiotto and Shao's work on defect Schur's indices.

Integral Representations of Rank Two False Theta Functions and Their Modularity Properties

False theta functions form a family of functions with intriguing modular properties and connections to mock modular forms. In this paper, we take the first step towards investigating modular transformations of higher rank false theta functions, following the example of higher depth mock modular forms. In particular, we prove that under quite general conditions, a rank two false theta function is determined in terms of iterated, holomorphic, Eichler-type integrals. This provides a new method for examining their modular properties and we apply it in a variety of situations where rank two false theta functions arise. We first consider generic parafermion characters of vertex algebras of type $A_2$ and $B_2$. This requires a fairly non-trivial analysis of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms of negative index, which is of independent interest. Then we discuss modularity of rank two false theta functions coming from superconformal Schur indices. Lastly, we analyze $\hat{Z}$-invariants of Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa for certain plumbing ${\tt H}$-graphs. Along the way, our method clarifies previous results on depth two quantum modularity.

Graph Schemes, Graph Series, and Modularity

To a simple graph we associate a so-called graph series, which can be viewed as the Hilbert--Poincaré series of a certain infinite jet scheme. We study new $q$-representations and examine modular properties of several examples including Dynkin diagrams of finite and affine type. Notably, we obtain new formulas for graph series of type $A_7$ and $A_8$ in terms of "sum of tails" series, and of type $D_4$ and $D_5$ in the form of indefinite theta functions of signature $(1,1)$. We also study examples related to sums of powers of divisors corresponding to $5$-cycles. For several examples of graphs, we prove that graph series are so-called mixed quantum modular forms.

Jet Schemes, Quantum Dilogarithm and Feigin-Stoyanovsky's Principal Subspaces

We analyze the structure of Feigin-Stoyanovsky's principal subspaces of affine Lie algebra from the jet algebra viewpoint. For type $A$ level one principal subspaces, we show that their shifted multi-graded Hilbert series can be expressed either using the quantum dilogarithm or as certain generating functions ``counting" finite-dimensional representations of $A$-type quivers. This notably results in novel fermionic character formulas for these principal subspaces. Moreover, our result implies that all level one principal subspaces of type $A$ are ``classically free" as vertex algebras. We also analyze infinite jet algebras associated to principal subspaces of affine vertex algebras $L_{1}(\mathfrak{so}_5)$, $L_{1}(\mathfrak{so}_8)$ and $L_1(\frak{g}_2)$. We derive a new character formula for the principal subspace of $L_1(\mathfrak{so}_5)$, proving that it is classically free, and present evidence that the principal subspaces of $L_1(\mathfrak{so}_8)$ and of $L_1(\frak{g}_2)$ are also classically free.

On $q$-series identities for false theta series

We prove several infinite families of $q$-series identities for false theta functions and related series. These identities are motivated by considerations of characters of modules of vertex operator superalgebras and of quantum dilogarithms. We also obtain closely related modular identities of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews type. As a byproduct of our identities, we establish several identities for the Rogers dilogarithm function coming from multi $q$-hypergeometric series with "double poles".

Permutation orbifolds of Virasoro vertex algebras and $W$-algebras

We study permutation orbifolds of the $2$-fold and $3$-fold tensor product for the Virasoro vertex algebra $\mathcal{V}_c$ of central charge $c$. In particular, we show that for all but finitely many central charges $\left(\mathcal{V}_c^{\otimes 3}\right)^{\mathbb{Z}_3}$ is a $W$-algebra of type $(2, 4, 5, 6^3 , 7, 8^3 , 9^3 , 10^2 )$. We also study orbifolds of their simple quotients and obtain new realizations of certain rational affine $W$-algebras associated to a principal nilpotent element. Further analysis of permutation orbifolds of the celebrated $(2,5)$-minimal vertex algebra $\mathcal{L}_{-\frac{22}{5}}$ is presented.

On parafermion vertex algebras of $\frak{sl}(2)_{-3/2}$ and $\frak{sl}(3)_{-3/2}$

We study parafermion vertex algebras $N_{-3/2}(\frak{sl}(2))$ and $N_{-3/2}(\frak{sl}(3))$. Using the isomorphism between $N_{-3/2}(\frak{sl}(3))$ and the logarithmic vertex algebra $\mathcal{W}^{0} (2)_{A_2} $ from [2], we show that these parafermion vertex algebras are infinite direct sums of irreducible modules for the Zamolodchikov algebra $\mathcal{W}(2,3)$ of central charge $c=-10$, and that $N_{-3/2}(\frak{sl}(3))$ is a direct sum of irreducible $N_{-3/2}(\frak{sl}(2))$-modules. As a byproduct, we prove certain conjectures about the vertex algebra $\mathcal{W}^0(p)_{A_2}$. We also obtain a vertex-algebraic proof of the irreducibility of a family of $\mathcal W(2,3)_{c}$ modules at $c=-10$.

Quantum modular forms and plumbing graphs of 3-manifolds

In this paper, we study quantum modular forms in connection to quantum invariants of plumbed 3-manifolds introduced recently by Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa. We explicitly compute these invariants for any $3$-leg star plumbing graphs whose associated matrix is unimodular and positive definite. For these graphs we confirm a quantum modularity conjecture of Gukov. We also analyze the invariants for general $n$-leg star graphs with unimodular plumbing matrices, and prove that they can be expressed as linear combinations of quantum modular forms.

Higher depth quantum modular forms and plumbed $3$-manifolds

In this paper we study new invariants $\widehat{Z}_{\boldsymbol{a}}(q)$ attached to plumbed $3$-manifolds that were introduced by Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa. These remarkable $q$-series at radial limits conjecturally compute WRT invariants of the corresponding plumbed $3$-manifold. Here we investigate the series $\widehat{Z}_{0}(q)$ for unimodular plumbing ${\tt H}$-graphs with six vertices. We prove that for every positive definite unimodular plumbing matrix, $\widehat{Z}_{0}(q)$ is a depth two quantum modular form on $\mathbb{Q}$.

Higher rank partial and false theta functions and representation theory

We study higher rank Jacobi partial and false theta functions (generalizations of the classical partial and false theta functions) associated to positive definite rational lattices. In particular, we focus our attention on certain Kostant's partial theta functions coming from ADE root lattices, which are then linked to representation theory of W-algebras. We derive modular transformation properties of regularized Kostant's partial and certain higher rank false theta functions. Modulo conjectures in representation theory, as an application, we compute regularized quantum dimensions of atypical and typical modules of "narrow" logarithmic W-algebras associated to rescaled root lattices. Results in this paper substantially generalize our previous work [19] pertaining to (1,p)-singlet W-algebras (the sl_2 case).
