Liquid Jet in Crossflow: Review of Breakup modes and Injector Geometry Effects

This review focuses on the liquid jet in crossflow (LJIC) configuration. LJIC is one of the most common strategies used for fuel injection in aerospace applications. It is popular due to its simplicity and efficient atomization characteristics. The aerodynamic force of the airflow is utilized to break liquid jet into small droplets. The objective of the present work is to give a basic overview of the physical processes involved in the breakup and penetration of LJIC. Breakup modes and underlying mechanisms are discussed in detail. Various modes are described and associated non-dimensional numbers are explained. Injector geometry which is often overlooked in literature is paid special attention. The mechanism of liquid jet instability getting triggered by velocity profile redistribution is explained using experimental and computational results. Surface waves on liquid jets are discussed. A theoretical model used to predict the wavelength of surface waves is described. DNS results are used to demonstrate the growth of surface instability on a liquid jet. Jet penetration and trajectory in the presence of crossflow are discussed. Various trajectory equations and the parameters used are discussed in detail. Progress in computational studies for LJIC is highlighted and challenges are discussed.

Experimental Investigation of Acoustically Forced Helium Jet in Crossflow Using Shadowgraphy and Modal Analysis

This study presents an experimental investigation of helium jet in crossflow of air, with an objective to understand the influence of acoustic forcing on jet behavior and mixing. Unforced and sinusoidally forced jets are studied. High speed shadowgraphy is used to capture instantaneous jet images. These images are further processed using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) algorithm to provide insights into the spatiotemporal behavior. Schlieren Imaging Velocimetry (SIV) is also used to understand the jet entrainment and identify regions of low and high velocities. Moreover, an interface tracking method is used to obtain interface location oscillations for near nozzle and far field locations. Energy spectrum is obtained from Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of these oscillations. The unforced jet is observed for different jet to crossflow velocity ratios (R), and it is observed that the jet penetration increases with R. Unforced cases show a broadband spectrum indicating the absence of any dominant frequency, except for the lowest velocity ratio case. The instability in unforced cases is limited to the shear layer oscillations. For the forced cases, a clear dominant frequency corresponding to the forcing frequency (and occasionally their harmonics) is recorded. It is observed that the impact of forcing function is not the same for all the frequencies, and the jet response is observed to be much more pronounced for a higher frequency as compared to a lower frequency forcing. Two typical cases, highlighting the effect of frequency response are compared in detail using image analysis, interface tracking, POD and SIV.

Primary breakup of liquid jet Effect of jet velocity profile

The present work examines the effect of the velocity profile on primary breakup of liquid jets emanating from fuel injectors. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) is used to simulate liquid jet breakup. Different velocity profiles are imposed on the liquid and their effect on breakup is examined. It is a common practice in the literature to use flat or uniform velocity profiles in such studies. The validity of this assumption is assessed and its implications are highlighted. Droplet sizes and degree of atomization are compared for all the cases. Further, a detailed comparison of jet breakup structure is made for two cases parabolic and power law velocity profiles. The liquid surface is observed to show two-dimensional waves initially, which subsequently transform into three-dimensional waves and give rise to ligament formation and surface breakup. Tip vortex rollup and its role in jet breakup is discussed. The distinction between different velocity profiles is examined in detail in terms of surface waves, degree of atomization, and jet structure.

Investigating Wake Structures in Flow Past Oscillating Cylinder Using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

The present study investigates unsteady wake dynamics in flow past oscillating cylinder. Two-dimensional computational study is carried out for flow past sinusoidally oscillating cylinder. Operating parameters like Reynolds number, forcing frequency, amplitude and wavelength are systematically varied and their effect on wake dynamics is investigated. Lift and drag coefficients are plotted with cylinder position to characterize the flow. Further, flow field is investigated using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Time-resolved vorticity contours are obtained. These results are then processed using POD algorithm. POD mode shapes and Power Spectral Density (PSD) plots are obtained for each case. Wake dynamics is analyzed using POD results. Flow response to cylinder oscillations is characterized by the POD mode shape and dominant frequency peaks in PSD plots. It is observed that flow is too dissipative at lower values of Reynolds number. Further, effect of frequency ratio is observed in achieving synchronized vortex shedding. High amplitude and large wavelength regime, which remained unexplored in previous research is also investigated.

Effect of Injector Geometry in Breakup of Liquid Jet in Crossflow Insights from POD

The present study aims to investigate the role of injector geometry, particularly injector tube length to diameter ratio (L/D) in liquid jet stability and breakup in presence of crossflow. Water is injected into a crossflow of air. Aerodynamic Weber number (We) and liquid Reynolds number (Rel) are systematically varied to observe various breakup modes. Bag breakup and surface stripping is observed for different operating conditions. Time-resolved jet trajectory images are processed using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) algorithm. POD mode shapes and corresponding Power Spectral Density (PSD) plots are analyzed to study breakup process and probe role of injector geometry effects. Further, high-resolution images are captured for the near-nozzle region. Detailed comparison is made for various cases. It is observed that with increase in (L/D), the jet surface becomes more turbulent and unstable. This results in early breakup and lower jet penetration
