Optimizations to the Parallel Breath First Search on Distributed Memory

Graphs and their traversal is becoming significant as it is applicable to various areas of mathematics, science and technology. Various problems in fields as varied as biochemistry (genomics), electrical engineering (communication networks), computer science (algorithms and computation) can be modeled as Graph problems. Real world scenarios including communities their interconnections and related properties can be studied using graphs. So fast, scalable, low-cost execution of parallel graph algorithms is very important. In this implementation of parallel breadth first search of graphs, we implemented Parallel BFS algorithm with 1-D partitioning of graph as described in [2] and have reduced execution time by optimizing communication for local buffers.

Stochastic Trust Region Inexact Newton Method for Large-scale Machine Learning

Nowadays stochastic approximation methods are one of the major research direction to deal with the large-scale machine learning problems. From stochastic first order methods, now the focus is shifting to stochastic second order methods due to their faster convergence and availability of computing resources. In this paper, we have proposed a novel Stochastic Trust RegiOn Inexact Newton method, called as STRON, to solve large-scale learning problems which uses conjugate gradient (CG) to inexactly solve trust region subproblem. The method uses progressive subsampling in the calculation of gradient and Hessian values to take the advantage of both, stochastic and full-batch regimes. We have extended STRON using existing variance reduction techniques to deal with the noisy gradients and using preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) as subproblem solver, and empirically proved that they do not work as expected, for the large-scale learning problems. Finally, our empirical results prove efficacy of the proposed method against existing methods with bench marked datasets.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Adaptive Traffic Signal Control

Many existing traffic signal controllers are either simple adaptive controllers based on sensors placed around traffic intersections, or optimized by traffic engineers on a fixed schedule. Optimizing traffic controllers is time consuming and usually require experienced traffic engineers. Recent research has demonstrated the potential of using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in this context. However, most of the studies do not consider realistic settings that could seamlessly transition into deployment. In this paper, we propose a DRL-based adaptive traffic signal control framework that explicitly considers realistic traffic scenarios, sensors, and physical constraints. In this framework, we also propose a novel reward function that shows significantly improved traffic performance compared to the typical baseline pre-timed and fully-actuated traffic signals controllers. The framework is implemented and validated on a simulation platform emulating real-life traffic scenarios and sensor data streams.

Driver Behavior Analysis Using Lane Departure Detection Under Challenging Conditions

In this paper, we present a novel model to detect lane regions and extract lane departure events (changes and incursions) from challenging, lower-resolution videos recorded with mobile cameras. Our algorithm used a Mask-RCNN based lane detection model as pre-processor. Recently, deep learning-based models provide state-of-the-art technology for object detection combined with segmentation. Among the several deep learning architectures, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) outperformed other machine learning models, especially for region proposal and object detection tasks. Recent development in object detection has been driven by the success of region proposal methods and region-based CNNs (R-CNNs). Our algorithm utilizes lane segmentation mask for detection and Fix-lag Kalman filter for tracking, rather than the usual approach of detecting lane lines from single video frames. The algorithm permits detection of driver lane departures into left or right lanes from continuous lane detections. Preliminary results show promise for robust detection of lane departure events. The overall sensitivity for lane departure events on our custom test dataset is 81.81%.

LIBS2ML: A Library for Scalable Second Order Machine Learning Algorithms

LIBS2ML is a library based on scalable second order learning algorithms for solving large-scale problems, i.e., big data problems in machine learning. LIBS2ML has been developed using MEX files, i.e., C++ with MATLAB/Octave interface to take the advantage of both the worlds, i.e., faster learning using C++ and easy I/O using MATLAB. Most of the available libraries are either in MATLAB/Python/R which are very slow and not suitable for large-scale learning, or are in C/C++ which does not have easy ways to take input and display results. So LIBS2ML is completely unique due to its focus on the scalable second order methods, the hot research topic, and being based on MEX files. Thus it provides researchers a comprehensive environment to evaluate their ideas and it also provides machine learning practitioners an effective tool to deal with the large-scale learning problems. LIBS2ML is an open-source, highly efficient, extensible, scalable, readable, portable and easy to use library. The library can be downloaded from the URL: \url{https://github.com/jmdvinodjmd/LIBS2ML}.

Modified online Newton step based on element wise multiplication

The second order method as Newton Step is a suitable technique in Online Learning to guarantee regret bound. The large data is a challenge in Newton method to store second order matrices as hessian. In this paper, we have proposed an modified online Newton step that store first and second order matrices of dimension m (classes) by d (features). we have used element wise arithmetic operation to retain matrices size same. The modified second order matrix size results in faster computations. Also, the mistake rate is at par with respect to popular methods in literature. The experiments outcome indicate that proposed method could be helpful to handle large multi class datasets in common desktop machines using second order method as Newton step.

SAAGs: Biased Stochastic Variance Reduction Methods for Large-scale Learning

Stochastic approximation is one of the effective approach to deal with the large-scale machine learning problems and the recent research has focused on reduction of variance, caused by the noisy approximations of the gradients. In this paper, we have proposed novel variants of SAAG-I and II (Stochastic Average Adjusted Gradient) (Chauhan et al. 2017), called SAAG-III and IV, respectively. Unlike SAAG-I, starting point is set to average of previous epoch in SAAG-III, and unlike SAAG-II, the snap point and starting point are set to average and last iterate of previous epoch in SAAG-IV, respectively. To determine the step size, we have used Stochastic Backtracking-Armijo line Search (SBAS) which performs line search only on selected mini-batch of data points. Since backtracking line search is not suitable for large-scale problems and the constants used to find the step size, like Lipschitz constant, are not always available so SBAS could be very effective in such cases. We have extended SAAGs (I, II, III and IV) to solve non-smooth problems and designed two update rules for smooth and non-smooth problems. Moreover, our theoretical results have proved linear convergence of SAAG-IV for all the four combinations of smoothness and strong-convexity, in expectation. Finally, our experimental studies have proved the efficacy of proposed methods against the state-of-art techniques.

Online learning using multiple times weight updating

Online learning makes sequence of decisions with partial data arrival where next movement of data is unknown. In this paper, we have presented a new technique as multiple times weight updating that update the weight iteratively forsame instance. The proposed technique analyzed with popular state-of-art algorithms from literature and experimented using established tool. The results indicates that mistake rate reduces to zero or close to zero for various datasets and algorithms. The overhead running cost is not too expensive and achieving mistake rate close to zero further strengthen the proposed technique. The present work include bound nature of weight updating for single instance and achieve optimal weight value. This proposed work could be extended to big datasets problems to reduce mistake rate in online learning environment. Also, the proposed technique could be helpful to meet real life challenges.

Faster Learning by Reduction of Data Access Time

Nowadays, the major challenge in machine learning is the Big Data challenge. The big data problems due to large number of data points or large number of features in each data point, or both, the training of models have become very slow. The training time has two major components: Time to access the data and time to process (learn from) the data. So far, the research has focused only on the second part, i.e., learning from the data. In this paper, we have proposed one possible solution to handle the big data problems in machine learning. The idea is to reduce the training time through reducing data access time by proposing systematic sampling and cyclic/sequential sampling to select mini-batches from the dataset. To prove the effectiveness of proposed sampling techniques, we have used Empirical Risk Minimization, which is commonly used machine learning problem, for strongly convex and smooth case. The problem has been solved using SAG, SAGA, SVRG, SAAG-II and MBSGD (Mini-batched SGD), each using two step determination techniques, namely, constant step size and backtracking line search method. Theoretical results prove the same convergence for systematic sampling, cyclic sampling and the widely used random sampling technique, in expectation. Experimental results with bench marked datasets prove the efficacy of the proposed sampling techniques and show up to six times faster training.

A Cyberinfrastructure for BigData Transportation Engineering

Big Data-driven transportation engineering has the potential to improve utilization of road infrastructure, decrease traffic fatalities, improve fuel consumption, decrease construction worker injuries, among others. Despite these benefits, research on Big Data-driven transportation engineering is difficult today due to the computational expertise required to get started. This work proposes BoaT, a transportation-specific programming language, and it's Big Data infrastructure that is aimed at decreasing this barrier to entry. Our evaluation that uses over two dozen research questions from six categories show that research is easier to realize as a BoaT computer program, an order of magnitude faster when this program is run, and exhibits 12-14x decrease in storage requirements.

Bi-National Delay Pattern Analysis For Commercial and Passenger Vehicles at Niagara Frontier Border

Border crossing delays between New York State and Southern Ontario cause problems like enormous economic loss and massive environmental pollutions. In this area, there are three border-crossing ports: Peace Bridge (PB), Rainbow Bridge (RB) and Lewiston-Queenston Bridge (LQ) at Niagara Frontier border. The goals of this paper are to figure out whether the distributions of bi-national wait times for commercial and passenger vehicles are evenly distributed among the three ports and uncover the hidden significant influential factors that result in the possible insufficient utilization. The historical border wait time data from 7:00 to 21:00 between 08/22/2016 and 06/20/2017 are archived, as well as the corresponding temporal and weather data. For each vehicle type towards each direction, a Decision Tree is built to identify the various border delay patterns over the three bridges. We find that for the passenger vehicles to the USA, the convenient connections between the Canada freeways with USA I-190 by LQ and PB may cause these two bridges more congested than RB, especially when it is a holiday in Canada. For the passenger vehicles in the other bound, RB is much more congested than LQ and PB in some cases, and the visitors to Niagara Falls in the USA in summer may be a reason. For the commercial trucks to the USA, the various delay patterns show PB is always more congested than LQ. Hour interval and weekend are the most significant factors appearing in all the four Decision Trees. These Decision Trees can help the authorities to make specific routing suggestions when the corresponding conditions are satisfied.

Lossy Data Compression Using Logarithm

Lossy compression algorithms take advantage of the inherent limitations of the human eye and discard information that cannot be seen. In the present paper, a technique termed as Lossy Data Compression using Logarithm (LDCL) is proposed to compress incoming binary data in the form of a resultant matrix containing the logarithmic values of different chosen numeric sets. The proposed method is able to achieve compression ratio up to 60 in many major cases. Keywords: LDCL, Lossy Data Compression, Binary Reduction, Logarithmic Approach

A Collaborative Filtering Based Approach for Recommending Elective Courses

In management education programmes today, students face a difficult time in choosing electives as the number of electives available are many. As the range and diversity of different elective courses available for selection have increased, course recommendation systems that help students in making choices about courses have become more relevant. In this paper we extend the concept of collaborative filtering approach to develop a course recommendation system. The proposed approach provides student an accurate prediction of the grade they may get if they choose a particular course, which will be helpful when they decide on selecting elective courses, as grade is an important parameter for a student while deciding on an elective course. We experimentally evaluate the collaborative filtering approach on a real life data set and show that the proposed system is effective in terms of accuracy.

Using Self-Organizing Maps for Sentiment Analysis

Web 2.0 services have enabled people to express their opinions, experience and feelings in the form of user-generated content. Sentiment analysis or opinion mining involves identifying, classifying and aggregating opinions as per their positive or negative polarity. This paper investigates the efficacy of different implementations of Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) for sentiment based visualization and classification of online reviews. Specifically, this paper implements the SOM algorithm for both supervised and unsupervised learning from text documents. The unsupervised SOM algorithm is implemented for sentiment based visualization and classification tasks. For supervised sentiment analysis, a competitive learning algorithm known as Learning Vector Quantization is used. Both algorithms are also compared with their respective multi-pass implementations where a quick rough ordering pass is followed by a fine tuning pass. The experimental results on the online movie review data set show that SOMs are well suited for sentiment based classification and sentiment polarity visualization.

A Neural Network based Approach for Predicting Customer Churn in Cellular Network Services

Marketing literature states that it is more costly to engage a new customer than to retain an existing loyal customer. Churn prediction models are developed by academics and practitioners to effectively manage and control customer churn in order to retain existing customers. As churn management is an important activity for companies to retain loyal customers, the ability to correctly predict customer churn is necessary. As the cellular network services market becoming more competitive, customer churn management has become a crucial task for mobile communication operators. This paper proposes a neural network based approach to predict customer churn in subscription of cellular wireless services. The results of experiments indicate that neural network based approach can predict customer churn.
