Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: The Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit Relations for SX Phoenicis Variables in the gri-Band

SX Phoenicis (SXP) variables are short period pulsating stars that exhibit a period-luminosity (PL) relation. We derived the gri-band PL and extinction-free period-Wesenheit (PW) relations, as well as the period-color (PC) and reddening-free period-Q-index (PQ) relations for 47 SXP stars in located in 21 globular clusters using the optical light curves taken from Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). These empirically relations were derived for the first time in the gri filters except for the g-band PL relation. We used our gi band PL and PW relations to derive a distance modulus to Crater II dwarf spheroidal which hosts one SXP variable. Assuming that the fundamental and first-overtone pulsation mode for the SXP variable in Crater II, we found distance moduli of $20.03 \pm 0.23$ mag and $20.37 \pm 0.24$ mag, respectively, using the PW relation, where the latter is in excellent agreement with independent RR Lyrae based distance to Crater II dwarf galaxy.

Precise Empirical Determination of Metallicity Dependence of Near-infrared Period-Luminosity Relations for RR Lyrae Variables

RR Lyrae variables are excellent population II distance indicators thanks to their well-defined period-luminosity relations (PLRs) at infrared wavelengths. We present results of near-infrared (NIR) monitoring of Galactic globular clusters to empirically quantify the metallicity dependence of NIR PLRs for RR Lyrae variables. Our sample includes homogeneous, accurate, and precise photometric data for 964 RR Lyrae variables in 11 globular clusters covering a large metallicity range ($Δ\textrm{[Fe/H]}\sim2$~dex). We derive $JHK_s$ band period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ) and period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations anchored using 346 Milky Way field RR Lyrae stars with {\it Gaia} parallaxes, and simultaneously solved for independent distances to globular clusters. We find a significant metallicity dependence of $\sim0.2$~mag/dex in $JHK_s$ band PLZ and PWZ relations for RR Lyrae stars independent of the adopted metallicity scale. The metallicity coefficients and the zero-points of the empirical PLZ and PWZ relations are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the horizontal branch evolution and pulsation models. Furthermore, RR Lyrae based distances to our sample of globular clusters are also statistically consistent with other independent measurements in the literature. Our recommended empirical $JHK_s$ band PLZ relations are also provided for RR Lyrae based distance measurements.

A Distance Measurement to M33 Using Optical Photometry of Mira Variables

We present a systematic analysis to determine and improve the pulsation periods of 1637 known long-period Mira variables in M33 using $gri$-band light curves spanning $\sim18$~years from several surveys, including M33 variability survey, Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), intermediate PTF, and Zwicky Transient Facility. Based on these collections of light curves, we found that optical band light curves that are as complete as possible are crucial to determine the periods of distant Miras. We demonstrated that the machine learning techniques can be used to classify Miras into O-rich and C-rich based on the $(J-K_s)$ period--color plane. Finally, We derived the distance modulus to M33 using O-rich Miras at maximum light together with our improved periods as $24.67 \pm 0.06$~mag, which is in good agreement with the recommended value given in the literature.

Period-Colour and Amplitude-Colour relations for OGLE-$δ$ Scuti stars in the Galactic Bulge and LMC

We present an analysis on the behaviour of the Galactic bulge and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) $δ$ Scuti stars in terms of period-colour and amplitude-colour (PCAC) relations at maximum, mean and minimum light. The publicly available Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment-IV (OGLE-IV) light curves for Galactic bulge and OGLE-III light curves for LMC $δ$ Scuti stars are exploited for the analysis. It has been found that the Galactic bulge $δ$ Scuti stars obey flat PC relations at maximum/mean/minimum light while the LMC $δ$ Scutis have sloped/sloped/flat PC relations at maximum/mean/minimum light. Both the Galactic bulge and the LMC $δ$ Scutis have sloped/flat/sloped AC relations at maximum/mean/minimum. These relations also show that Galactic $δ$ Scutis are hotter as compared to their LMC counterparts. The period-amplitude (PA) relations for $δ$ Scutis exhibit different behaviour in the Galactic bulge and the LMC. The LMC variables are found to have higher amplitudes at a given period. The amplitude of the Galactic bulge $δ$ Scuti shows a bimodal distribution which can be modelled using a two-component Gaussian Mixture Model: one component with a lower amplitude and another with a higher amplitude. The observed behaviour of the $δ$ Scuti PCAC relations can be explained using the theory of the interaction of hydrogen ionization front (HIF) and stellar photosphere as well as the PA diagram. We use MESA-RSP to calculate theoretical non-linear hydrodynamical pulsation models for $δ$ Scuti stars with input metallicities of $Z=0.02$ and $Z=0.008$ appropriate for the Galactic bulge and LMC, respectively. The observed PCAC relations and theoretical calculations support the HIF-photosphere interaction theory.

Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: The Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit Relations for Anomalous Cepheids Supplemented with Large Magellanic Cloud Sample

We present the first gri-band period-luminosity (PL) and period-Wesenheit (PW) relations for the fundamental mode anomalous Cepheids. These PL and PW relations were derived from a combined sample of five anomalous Cepheids in globular cluster M92 and the Large Magellanic Cloud, both of which have distance accurate to ~1% available from literature. Our g-band PL relation is similar to the B-band PL relation as reported in previous study. We applied our PL and PW relations to anomalous Cepheids discovered in dwarf galaxy Crater II, and found a larger but consistent distance modulus than the recent measurements based on RR Lyrae. Our calibrations of gri-band PL and PW relations, even though less precise due to small number of anomalous Cepheids, will be useful for distance measurements to dwarf galaxies.

Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: Calibration of the gr-Band Absolute Magnitudes for the Yellow Post-Asymptotic-Giant-Branch Stars

We present the first absolute calibration for the yellow post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars in the g- and r-band based on time-series observations from the Zwicky Transient Facility. These absolute magnitudes were calibrated using four yellow PAGB stars (one non-varying star and three Type II Cepheids) located in the globular clusters. We provide two calibrations of the gr-band absolute magnitudes for the yellow PAGB stars, by using an arithmetic mean and a linear regression. We demonstrate that the linear regression provides a better fit to the g-band absolute magnitudes for the yellow PAGB stars. These calibrated gr-band absolute magnitudes have a potential to be used as population II distance indicators in the era of time-domain synoptic sky surveys.

Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: The Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit Relations for Type II Cepheids

We present the first gri-band period-luminosity (PL) and period-Wesenheit (PW) relations for 37 Type II Cepheids (hereafter TIIC) located in 18 globular clusters based on photometric data from the Zwicky Transient Facility. We also updated BV IJHK-band absolute magnitudes for 58 TIIC in 24 globular clusters using the latest homogeneous distances to the globular clusters. The slopes of g/r/i and B/V/I band PL relations are found to be statistically consistent when using the same sample of distance and reddening. We employed the calibration of ri-band PL/PW relations in globular clusters to estimate a distance to M31 based on a sample of ~270 TIIC from the PAndromeda project. The distance modulus to M31, obtained using calibrated ri-band PW relation, agrees well with the recent determination based on classical Cepheids. However, distance moduli derived using the calibrated r- and i-band PL relations are systematically smaller by ~0.2 mag, suggesting there are possible additional systematic error on the PL relations. Finally, we also derive the period-color (PC) relations and for the first time the period-Q-index (PQ) relations, where the Q-index is reddening-free, for our sample of TIIC. The PC relations based on (r-i) and near-infrared colors and the PQ relations are found to be relatively independent of the pulsation periods.

Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: The RR Lyrae gri-Band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity and Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity Relations

Based on time-series observations collected from Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we derived period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ) and period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations for RR Lyrae located in globular clusters. We have applied various selection criteria to exclude RR Lyrae with problematic or spurious light curves. These selection criteria utilized information on the number of data points per light curve, amplitudes, colors, and residuals on the period-luminosity and/or period-Wesenheit relations. Due to blending, a number of RR Lyrae in globular clusters were found to be anomalously bright and have small amplitudes of their ZTF light curves. We used our final sample of ~750 RR Lyrae in 46 globular clusters covering a wide metallicity range (-2.36 < [Fe/H] < -0.54 dex) to derive PLZ and PWZ relations in gri bands. In addition, we have also derived the period-color-metallicity (PCZ) and for the first time, the PQZ relations where the Q-index is extinction-free by construction. We have compared our various relations to empirical and theoretical relations available in literature, and found a good agreement with most studies. Finally, we applied our derived PLZ relation to a dwarf galaxy, Crater II, and found its true distance modulus should be larger than the most recent determination.

RR Lyrae and Type II Cepheid Variables in Globular Clusters: Optical and Infrared Properties

Globular clusters are both primary fossils of galactic evolution and formation and are ideal laboratories for constraining the evolution of low-mass and metal-poor stars. RR Lyrae and type II Cepheid variables are low-mass, radially pulsating stars that trace old-age stellar populations. These stellar standard candles in globular clusters are crucial for measuring their precise distances and, in turn, absolute ages, and for the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. Herein, the evolutionary stages of RR Lyrae and type II Cepheids are discussed, and their pulsation properties, including the light curves, color-magnitude and period-amplitude diagrams, and period-luminosity relations in globular clusters at optical and infrared wavelengths are presented. The RR Lyrae visual magnitude-metallicity relation and the multiband period-luminosity-metallicity relations in globular clusters covering a wide metallicity range are also discussed in detail for their application to the RR Lyrae-based distance~scale.

First results on RR Lyrae stars with the TESS space telescope: untangling the connections between mode content, colors and distances

The TESS space telescope is collecting continuous, high-precision optical photometry of stars throughout the sky, including thousands of RR Lyrae stars. In this paper, we present results for an initial sample of 118 nearby RR Lyrae stars observed in TESS Sectors 1 and 2. We use differential-image photometry to generate light curves and analyse their mode content and modulation properties. We combine accurate light curve parameters from TESS with parallax and color information from the Gaia mission to create a comprehensive classification scheme. We build a clean sample, preserving RR Lyrae stars with unusual light curve shapes, while separating other types of pulsating stars. We find that a large fraction of RR Lyrae stars exhibit various low-amplitude modes, but the distribution of those modes is markedly different from those of the bulge stars. This suggests that differences in physical parameters have an observable effect on the excitation of extra modes, potentially offering a way to uncover the origins of these signals. However, mode identification is hindered by uncertainties when identifying the true pulsation frequencies of the extra modes. We compare mode amplitude ratios in classical double-mode stars to stars with extra modes at low amplitudes and find that they separate into two distinct groups. Finally, we find a high percentage of modulated stars among the fundamental-mode pulsators, but also find that at least 28% of them do not exhibit modulation, confirming that a significant fraction of stars lack the Blazhko effect.

Optical and near-infrared pulsation properties of RR Lyrae and Population II Cepheid variables in the Messier 15 globular cluster

Messier 15 (NGC 7078) is an old and metal-poor post core-collapse globular cluster which hosts a rich population of variable stars. We report new optical ($gi$) and near-infrared (NIR, $JK_s$) multi-epoch observations for 129 RR Lyrae, 4 Population II Cepheids (3 BL Herculis, 1 W Virginis), and 1 anomalous Cepheid variable candidate in M15 obtained using the MegaCam and the WIRCam instruments on the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Multi-band data are used to improve the periods and classification of variable stars, and determine accurate mean magnitudes and pulsational amplitudes from the light curves fitted with optical and NIR templates. We derive optical and NIR period-luminosity relations for RR Lyrae stars which are best constrained in the $K_s$-band, $m_{K_s} = -2.333~(0.054) \log P + 13.948~(0.015)$ with a scatter of only $0.037$ mag. Theoretical and empirical calibrations of RR Lyrae period-luminosity-metallicity relations are used to derive a true distance modulus to M15: $15.196~\pm~0.026$~(statistical)~$\pm~ 0.039$~(systematic) mag. Our precise distance moduli based on RR Lyrae stars and Population II Cepheid variables are mutually consistent and agree with recent distance measurements in the literature based on {\it Gaia} parallaxes and other independent methods.

Quantifying Variability of YSOs in the Mid-IR Over Six Years with NEOWISE

Variability in young stellar objects (YSOs) can be caused by various time-dependent phenomena associated with star formation, including accretion rates, geometric changes in the circumstellar disks, stochastic hydromagnetic interactions between stellar surfaces and inner disk edges, reconnections within the stellar magnetosphere, and hot/cold spots on stellar surfaces. We uncover and characterize $\sim$1700 variables from a sample of $\sim$5400 YSOs in nearby low-mass star-forming regions using mid-IR light curves obtained from the 6.5-years NEOWISE All Sky Survey. The mid-IR variability traces a wide range of dynamical, physical, and geometrical phenomenon. We classify six types of YSO mid-IR variability based on their light curves: secular variability ($Linear, Curved, Periodic$) and stochastic variability ($Burst, Drop, Irregular$). YSOs in earlier evolutionary stages have higher fractions of variables and higher amplitudes for the variability, with the recurrence timescale of FUor-type outbursts (defined here as $Δ$W1 or $Δ$W2 $>1$ mag followed by inspection of candidates) of $\sim$1000 years in the early embedded protostellar phase. Known eruptive young stars and subluminous objects show fractions of variables similar to the fraction ($\sim55\%$) found in typical protostars, suggesting that these two distinct types are not distinct in variability over the 6.5-year timescale. Along with brightness variability, we also find a diverse range of secular color variations, which can be attributed to a competitive interplay between the variable accretion luminosity of the central source and the variable extinction by material associated with the accretion process.

RR Lyrae variables in Messier 53: Near-infrared Period--Luminosity relations and the calibration using Gaia Early Data Release 3

We present new near-infrared, $JHK_s$, Period--Luminosity relations (PLRs) for RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 53 (M53 or NGC 5024) globular cluster. Multi-epoch $JHK_s$ observations, obtained with the WIRCam instrument on the 3.6-m Canada France Hawaii Telescope, are used for the first time to estimate precise mean-magnitudes for 63 RR Lyrae stars in M53 including 29 fundamental-mode (RRab) and 34 first-overtone modes (RRc) variables. The $JHK_s$-band PLRs for RR Lyrae stars are best constrained for RRab types with a minimal scatter of 22, 23, and 19 mmag, respectively. The combined sample of RR Lyrae is used to derive the $K_s$-band PLR, $K_s = -2.303 (0.063) \log P + 15.212 (0.016)$ exhibiting a $1σ$ dispersion of only $0.027$ mag. Theoretical Period--Luminosity--Metallicity (PLZ) relations are used to predict parallaxes for 400 Galactic RR Lyrae resulting in a median parallax zero-point offset of $-7\pm3~μ$as in {\it Gaia} Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), which increases to $22\pm2~μ$as if the parallax corrections are applied. We also estimate a robust distance modulus, $μ_\textrm{M53} = 16.403 \pm 0.024$ (statistical) $\pm 0.033$ (systematic) mag, to M53 based on theoretical calibrations. Homogeneous and precise mean-magnitudes for RR Lyrae in M53 together with similar literature data for M3, M4, M5, and $ω$ Cen are used to empirically calibrate a new RR Lyrae PLZ$_{K_s}$ relation, $K_s = -0.848 (0.007) -2.320 (0.006) \log P + 0.166 (0.011) {\rm[Fe/H]}$, anchored with {\it Gaia} EDR3 distances and theoretically predicted relations, and simultaneously estimate precise RR Lyrae based distances to these globular clusters.

Detecting shock waves in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae using large sample of spectra in SDSS and LAMOST

Steps toward the nature inside RR Lyrae variables can not only improve our understanding of variable stars but also innovate the precision when we use them as tracers to map the structure of the universe. In this work, we develop a hand-crafted one-dimensional pattern recognition pipeline to fetch out the "first apparitions", the most prominent observational characteristic of shock. We report the first detection of hydrogen emission lines in the first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae variables. We find that there is an anti-correlation between the intensity and the radial velocity of the emission signal, which is possibly caused by opacity changing in the helium ionization zone. Moreover, we find one RRd star with hydrogen emission that possibly shows Blazhko-type modulations. According to our discoveries, with an enormous volume of upcoming data releases of variable stars and spectra, it may become possible to build up the bridge between shock waves and big problems like the Blazhko effect in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars.

Possible evidence of hydrogen emission in the first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae variables

The nature of shock waves in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars remains a mystery because of limited spectroscopic observations. We apply a pattern recognition algorithm on spectroscopic data from SDSS and LAMOST and report the first evidence of hydrogen emission in first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae stars showing the "first apparition", which is the most prominent observational characteristic of shock in RR Lyrae variables. We find ten RRc stars in SDSS, ten RRc stars in LAMOST, and three RRd stars in LAMOST that show blueshifted Balmer emissions. The emission features possibly indicate the existence of shock waves. We calculate the radial velocities of the emission lines, which are related to the physical conditions occurring in the radiative zone of shock waves. Using photometric observations from ZTF, we present a detailed light curve analysis for the frequency components in one of our RRd stars with hydrogen emission, RRdl3, for possible modulations. With the enormous volume of upcoming spectral observations of variable stars, our study raises the possibility of connecting the unexplained Blazhko effect to shock waves in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars.

A theoretical framework of BL Her stars. I. Effect of metallicity and convection parameters on period-luminosity and period-radius relations

We present a new grid of convective BL Herculis models using the state-of-the-art 1D non-linear radial stellar pulsation tool MESA-RSP. We investigate the impact of metallicity and four sets of different convection parameters on multi-wavelength properties. Non-linear models were computed for periods typical for BL Her stars, i.e. $1 \leq \mathrm{P (days)} \leq 4$ covering a wide range of input parameters - metallicity ($-2.0\; \mathrm{dex} \leq \mathrm{[Fe/H]} \leq 0.0\; \mathrm{dex}$), stellar mass (0.5M$_{\odot}$-0.8M$_{\odot}$), luminosity (50L$_{\odot}$-300L$_{\odot}$) and effective temperature (full extent of the instability strip; in steps of 50K). The total number of BL Her models with full-amplitude stable pulsations used in this study is 10280 across the four sets of convection parameters. We obtain their multiband ($UBVRIJHKLL'M$) light curves and derive new theoretical period-luminosity ($PL$), period-Wesenheit ($PW$) and period-radius ($PR$) relations at mean light. We find that the models computed with radiative cooling show statistically similar slopes for $PL$, $PW$ and $PR$ relations. Most empirical relations match well with the theoretical $PL$, $PW$ and $PR$ relations from the BL Her models computed using the four sets of convection parameters. However, $PL$ slopes of the models with radiative cooling provide a better match to empirical relations for BL Her stars in the LMC in the $HK_S$ bands. For each set of convection parameters, the effect of metallicity is significant in $U$ and $B$-bands and negligible in infrared bands, which is consistent with empirical results. No significant metallicity effects are seen in the $PR$ relations.

A study of the stellar photosphere-hydrogen ionisation front interaction in pulsating variables using period-color relations

Period-color (PC) relations may be used to study the interaction of the stellar photosphere and the hydrogen ionization front (HIF). RR Lyraes (RRLs) and long period classical Cepheids (P > 10d) have been found to exhibit different PC behavior at minimum and maximum light which can be explained by the HIF-photosphere interaction based on their location on the HR diagram. In this work, we extend the study to include type II Cepheids (T2Cs) with an aim to test the HIF-photosphere interaction theory across a broad spectrum of variable star types. We find W Vir stars and BL Her stars to have similar PC relations as those from long period and short period classical Cepheids, respectively. We also use MESA to compute RRL, BL Her and classical Cepheid models to study the theoretical HIF-photosphere distance and find the results to be fairly consistent with the HIF-photosphere interaction theory.

Near-infrared Census of RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 3 globular cluster and the Period--Luminosity Relations

We present new near-infrared ($JHK_s$) time-series observations of RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 3 (NGC 5272) globular cluster using the WIRCam instrument at the 3.6-m Canada France Hawaii Telescope. Our observations cover a sky area of $\sim 21'\times 21'$ around the cluster center and provide an average of twenty epochs of homogeneous $JHK_s$-band photometry. New homogeneous photometry is used to estimate robust mean magnitudes for 175 fundamental-mode (RRab), 47 overtone-mode (RRc), and 11 mixed-mode (RRd) variables. Our sample of 233 RR Lyrae variables is the largest thus far obtained in a single cluster with time-resolved, multi-band near-infrared photometry. Near-infrared to optical amplitude ratios for RR Lyrae in Messier 3 exhibit a systematic increase moving from RRc to short-period ($P < 0.6$~days) and long-period ($P \gtrsim 0.6$~days) RRab variables. We derive $JHK_s$-band Period--Luminosity relations for RRab, RRc, and the combined sample of variables. Absolute calibrations based on the theoretically predicted Period--Luminosity--Metallicity relations for RR Lyrae stars yield a distance modulus, $μ= 15.041 \pm 0.017~(\textrm{statistical}) \pm 0.036~(\textrm{systematic})$~mag, to Messier 3. When anchored to trigonometric parallaxes for nearby RR Lyrae stars from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} and the {\it Gaia} mission, our distance estimates are consistent with those resulting from the theoretical calibrations, albeit with relatively larger systematic uncertainties.
