Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in UPt_3

The short ranged antiferromagnetism recently seen in UPt_3 is proved incompatible with two dimensional (2D) order parameter models that take the antiferromagnetism as a symmetry breaking field. To adjust to the local moment direction, the order parameter twists over very long length scales as per the Imry-Ma argument. A variational solution to the Ginzburg-Landau equations is used to study the nature of the short ranged order. Although there are still two transitions, the lower one is of first order -- in contradiction to experiments. It is shown that the latent heat predicted by the 2D models at the lower transition is too large not to have been seen. A simple periodic model is numerically studied to show that the lower transition can not be a crossover either.

Vibrational Decoherence in Ion Trap Quantum Computers

The ion trap quantum computer proposed by Cirac and Zoller is analyzed for decoherence due to vibrations of the ions. An adiabatic approximation exploiting the vast difference between the frequencies of the optical intraionic transition and the vibrational modes is used to find the decoherence time at any temperature T. The scaling of this decoherence time with the number of ions is discussed, and compared to that due to spontaneous emission.

Decoherence in Ion Trap Quantum Computers

The {\it intrinsic} decoherence from vibrational coupling of the ions in the Cirac-Zoller quantum computer [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 74}, 4091 (1995)] is considered. Starting from a state in which the vibrational modes are at a temperature $T$, and each ion is in a superposition of an excited and a ground state, an adiabatic approximation is used to find the inclusive probability $P(t)$ for the ions to evolve as they would without the vibrations, and for the vibrational modes to evolve into any final state. An analytic form is found for $P(t)$ at $T=0$, and the decoherence time is found for all $T$. The decoherence is found to be quite small, even for 1000 ions.

Surface superconductivity and $H_{c3}$ in UPt$_3$

Surface superconductivity is studied within Ginzburg-Landau theory for two classes of models for the order parameter of UPt$_{3}$. The first class assumes two independent one-dimensional order parameters ($AB$ models), while the second assumes a single two-dimensional order parameter ($E$ models). $H_{c3}$ is calculated for all cases where the surface normal and magnetic field lie along high symmetry directions. Assuming specular reflection, it is found that except when ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf\hat c}$, the ratio $H_{c3}/H_{c2}$ is either unity or equals its `s-wave' value 1.695, although the precise $H_{c3}$ vs. $T$ curve predicted by the $AB$ and $E$ models differs for various geometries. The results are compared with recent experiments, and predictions are made for future experiments.
