Steady State of an Active Brownian Particle in Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap

We find an exact series solution for the steady-state probability distribution of a harmonically trapped active Brownian particle in two dimensions, in the presence of translational diffusion. This series solution allows us to efficiently explore the behavior of the system in different parameter regimes. Identifying "active" and "passive" regimes, we predict a surprising re-entrant active-to-passive transition with increasing trap stiffness. Our numerical simulations validate this finding. We discuss various interesting limiting cases wherein closed form expressions for the distributions can be obtained.

Gap statistics of two interacting run and tumble particles in one dimension

We study the dynamics of the separation (gap) between a pair of interacting run and tumble particles (RTPs) moving in one dimension in the presence of additional thermal noise. On a ring geometry the distribution of the gap approaches a steady state. We analytically compute this distribution and find that this is exponentially localised in space, in contrast to the `jammed' configuration, seen earlier in the absence of thermal noise. We also study the relaxation which is an exponential, characterised by a time scale $τ_r$. We observe that this time scale undergoes a crossover from a size independent value to a size dependent form with increasing size $l$ of the ring. We study the full eigenvalue spectrum of the evolution operator $\mathcal{L}$ and find that the spectrum can be classified into four sectors depending on the symmetries of $\mathcal{L}$. For large $l$, we find explicit expressions for the low lying eigenvalues in each of the sectors. On infinite line the separation does not reach a steady state. In the long times we find that the particles behave as interacting Brownian particles, except for the presence of a peak in the distribution at small separation which is a remnant of activity.

Anomalous heat transport in one dimensional systems: a description using non-local fractional-type diffusion equation

It has been observed in many numerical simulations, experiments and from various theoretical treatments that heat transport in one-dimensional systems of interacting particles cannot be described by the phenomenological Fourier's law. The picture that has emerged from studies over the last few years is that Fourier's law gets replaced by a spatially non-local linear equation wherein the current at a point gets contributions from the temperature gradients in other parts of the system. Correspondingly the usual heat diffusion equation gets replaced by a non-local fractional-type diffusion equation. In this review, we describe the various theoretical approaches which lead to this framework and also discuss recent progress on this problem.

Symmetric Exclusion Process under Stochastic Resetting

We study the behaviour of a Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP) in presence of stochastic resetting where the configuration of the system is reset to a step-like profile with a fixed rate $r.$ We show that the presence of resetting affects both the stationary and dynamical properties of SEP strongly. We compute the exact time-dependent density profile and show that the stationary state is characterized by a non-trivial inhomogeneous profile in contrast to the flat one for $r=0.$ We also show that for $r>0$ the average diffusive current grows linearly with time $t,$ in stark contrast to the $\sqrt{t}$ growth for $r=0.$ In addition to the underlying diffusive current, we identify the resetting current in the system which emerges due to the sudden relocation of the particles to the step-like configuration and is strongly correlated to the diffusive current. We show that the average resetting current is negative, but its magnitude also grows linearly with time $t.$ We also compute the probability distributions of the diffusive current, resetting current and the total current (sum of the diffusive and the resetting currents) using the renewal approach. We demonstrate that while the typical fluctuations of both the diffusive and reset currents around the mean are typically Gaussian, the distribution of the total current shows a strong non-Gaussian behaviour.

Harmonically confined particles with long-range repulsive interactions

We study an interacting system of $N$ classical particles on a line at thermal equilibrium. The particles are confined by a harmonic trap and repelling each other via pairwise interaction potential that behaves as a power law $\propto \sum_{\substack{i\neq j}}^N|x_i-x_j|^{-k}$ (with $k>-2$) of their mutual distance. This is a generalization of the well known cases of the one component plasma ($k=-1$), Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0^+$), and the Calogero-Moser model ($k=2$). Due to the competition between harmonic confinement and pairwise repulsion, the particles spread over a finite region of space for all $k>-2$. We compute exactly the average density profile for large $N$ for all $k>-2$ and show that while it is independent of temperature for sufficiently low temperature, it has a rich and nontrivial dependence on $k$ with distinct behavior for $-2 1$ and $k=1$.

Local time of diffusion with stochastic resetting

Diffusion with stochastic resetting has recently emerged as a powerful modeling tool with a myriad of potential applications. Here, we study local time in this model, covering situations of free and biased diffusion with, and without, the presence of an absorbing boundary. Given a Brownian trajectory that evolved for $t$ units of time, the local time is simply defined as the total time the trajectory spent in a small vicinity of its initial position. However, as Brownian trajectories are stochastic --- the local time itself is a random variable which fluctuates round and about its mean value. In the past, the statistics of these fluctuations has been quantified in detail; but not in the presence of resetting which biases the particle to spend more time near its starting point. Here, we extend past results to include the possibility of stochastic resetting with, and without, the presence of an absorbing boundary and/or drift. We obtain exact results for the moments and distribution of the local time and these reveal that its statistics usually admits a simple form in the long-time limit. And yet, while fluctuations in the absence of stochastic resetting are typically non-Gaussian --- resetting gives rise to Gaussian fluctuations. The analytical findings presented herein are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Intermediate deviation regime for the full eigenvalue statistics in the complex Ginibre ensemble

We study the Ginibre ensemble of $N \times N$ complex random matrices and compute exactly, for any finite $N$, the full distribution as well as all the cumulants of the number $N_r$ of eigenvalues within a disk of radius $r$ centered at the origin. In the limit of large $N$, when the average density of eigenvalues becomes uniform over the unit disk, we show that for $0<r<1$ the fluctuations of $N_r$ around its mean value $\langle N_r \rangle \approx N r^2$ display three different regimes: (i) a typical Gaussian regime where the fluctuations are of order ${\cal O}(N^{1/4})$, (ii) an intermediate regime where $N_r - \langle N_r \rangle = {\cal O}(\sqrt{N})$, and (iii) a large deviation regime where $N_r - \langle N_r \rangle = {\cal O}({N})$. This intermediate behaviour (ii) had been overlooked in previous studies and we show here that it ensures a smooth matching between the typical and the large deviation regimes. In addition, we demonstrate that this intermediate regime controls all the (centred) cumulants of $N_r$, which are all of order ${\cal O}(\sqrt{N})$, and we compute them explicitly. Our analytical results are corroborated by precise "importance sampling" Monte Carlo simulations.

Some Permutationllay Symmetric Multiple Hypotheses Testing Rules Under Dependent Set up

In this paper, our interest is in the problem of simultaneous hypothesis testing when the test statistics corresponding to the individual hypotheses are possibly correlated. Specifically, we consider the case when the test statistics together have a multivariate normal distribution (with equal correlation between each pair) with an unknown mean vector and our goal is to decide which components of the mean vector are zero and which are non-zero. This problem was taken up earlier in Bogdan et al. (2011) for the case when the test statistics are independent normals. Asymptotic optimality in a Bayesian decision theoretic sense was studied in this context, the optimal precodures were characterized and optimality of some well-known procedures were thereby established. The case under dependence was left as a challenging open problem. We have studied the problem both theoretically and through extensive simulations and have given some permutation invariant rules. Though in Bogdan et al. (2011), the asymptotic derivations were done in the context of sparsity of the non-zero means, our result does not require the assumption of sparsity and holds under a more general setup.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of the piston in the Szilard engine

We consider a Szilard engine in one dimension, consisting of a single particle of mass $m$, moving between a piston of mass $M$, and a heat reservoir at temperature $T$. In addition to an external force, the piston experiences repeated elastic collisions with the particle. We find that the motion of a heavy piston ($M \gg m$), can be described effectively by a Langevin equation. Various numerical evidences suggest that the frictional coefficient in the Langevin equation is given by $γ= (1/X)\sqrt{8 πm k_BT}$, where $X$ is the position of the piston measured from the thermal wall. Starting from the exact master equation for the full system and using a perturbation expansion in $ε= \sqrt{m/M}$, we integrate out the degrees of freedom of the particle to obtain the effective Fokker-Planck equation for the piston albeit with a different frictional coefficient. Our microscopic study shows that the piston is never in equilibrium during the expansion step, contrary to the assumption made in the usual Szilard engine analysis --- nevertheless the conclusions of Szilard remain valid.

Derivation of fluctuating hydrodynamics and crossover from diffusive to anomalous transport in a hard-particle gas

A recently developed non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics theory has been quite successful in describing various features of anomalous energy transport. However the diffusion and the noise terms present in this theory are not derived from microscopic descriptions but rather added phenomenologically. We here derive these hydrodynamic equations with explicit calculation of the diffusion and noise terms in a one-dimensional model. We show that in this model the energy current scales anomalously with system size $L$ as $\sim L^{-2/3}$ in the leading order with a diffusive correction of order $\sim L^{-1}$. The crossover length $\ell_{c}$ from diffusive to anomalous transport is expressed in terms of microscopic parameters. Our theoretical predictions are verified numerically.

Fractional diffusion equation description of an open anomalous heat conduction set-up

We provide a stochastic fractional diffusion equation description of energy transport through a finite one-dimensional chain of harmonic oscillators with stochastic momentum exchange and connected to Langevian type heat baths at the boundaries. By establishing an unambiguous finite domain representation of the associated fractional operator, we show that this equation can correctly reproduce equilibrium properties like Green-Kubo formula as well as non-equilibrium properties like the steady state temperature and current. In addition, this equation provides the exact time evolution of the temperature profile. Taking insights from the diffusive system and from numerical simulations, we pose a conjecture that these long-range correlations in the steady state are given by the inverse of the fractional operator. We also point out some interesting properties of the spectrum of the fractional operator. All our analytical results are supplemented with extensive numerical simulations of the microscopic system.

Light-cone spreading of perturbations and the butterfly effect in a classical spin chain

We find that localised perturbations in a chaotic classical many-body system-- the classical Heisenberg We find that the effects of a localised perturbation in a chaotic classical many-body system--the classical Heisenberg chain at infinite temperature--spread ballistically with a finite speed even when the local spin dynamics is diffusive. We study two complementary aspects of this butterfly effect: the rapid growth of the perturbation, and its simultaneous ballistic (light-cone) spread, as characterised by the Lyapunov exponents and the butterfly speed respectively. We connect this to recent studies of the out-of-time-ordered commutators (OTOC), which have been proposed as an indicator of chaos in a quantum system. We provide a straightforward identification of the OTOC with a natural correlator in our system and demonstrate that many of its interesting qualitative features are present in the classical system. Finally, by analysing the scaling forms, we relate the growth, spread and propagation of the perturbation with the growth of one-dimensional interfaces described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation.

Steady state, relaxation and first-passage properties of a run-and-tumble particle in one-dimension

We investigate the motion of a run-and-tumble particle (RTP) in one dimension. We find the exact probability distribution of the particle with and without diffusion on the infinite line, as well as in a finite interval. In the infinite domain, this probability distribution approaches a Gaussian form in the long-time limit, as in the case of a regular Brownian particle. At intermediate times, this distribution exhibits unexpected multi-modal forms. In a finite domain, the probability distribution reaches a steady state form with peaks at the boundaries, in contrast to a Brownian particle. We also study the relaxation to the steady state analytically. Finally we compute the survival probability of the RTP in a semi-infinite domain. In the finite interval, we compute the exit probability and the associated exit times. We provide numerical verifications of our analytical results.

Motion of a Brownian molecule in the presence of reactive boundaries

We study the one-dimensional motion of a Brownian particle inside a confinement described by two reactive boundaries which can partially reflect or absorb the particle. Understanding the effects of such boundaries is important in physics, chemistry and biology. We compute the probability density of the particle displacement exactly, from which we derive expressions for the survival probability and the mean absorption time as a function of the reactive coefficients. Furthermore, using the Feynman-Kac formalism, we investigate the reaction time profile, which is the fluctuating time spent by the particle at a given location, both till a fixed observation time and till the absorption time. Our analytical results are compared to numerical simulations showing perfect agreement.

Anomalous heat equation in a system connected to thermal reservoirs

We study anomalous transport in a one-dimensional system with two conserved quantities in presence of thermal baths. In this system we derive exact expressions of the temperature profile and the two point correlations in steady state as well as in the non-stationary state where the later describes the relaxation to the steady state. In contrast to the Fourier heat equation in the diffusive case, here we show that the evolution of the temperature profile is governed by a non-local anomalous heat equation. We provide numerical verifications of our results.

Extreme statistics and index distribution in the classical $1d$ Coulomb gas

We consider a one-dimensional gas of $N$ charged particles confined by an external harmonic potential and interacting via the one-dimensional Coulomb potential. For this system we show that in equilibrium the charges settle, on an average, uniformly and symmetrically on a finite region centred around the origin. We study the statistics of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ and show that the limiting distribution describing its typical fluctuations is different from the Tracy-Widom distribution found in the one-dimensional log-gas. We also compute the large deviation functions which characterise the atypical fluctuations of $x_{\max}$ far away from its mean value. In addition, we study the gap between the two rightmost particles as well as the index $N_+$, i.e., the number of particles on the positive semi-axis. We compute the limiting distributions associated to the typical fluctuations of these observables as well as the corresponding large deviation functions. We provide numerical supports to our analytical predictions. Part of these results were announced in a recent Letter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 060601 (2017).

Generalized Second Law and optimal protocols for nonequilibrium systems

A generalized version of the Maximum Work Theorem is valid when the system is initially not at thermal equilibrium. In this work, we initially study the fraction of trajectories that violate this generalized theorem for a two simple systems: a particle in a harmonic trap (i) whose centre is dragged with some protocol, and (ii) whose stiffness constant changes as a function of time. We also find the optimal protocol that minimizes the average change in total entropy. To our surprise, we find that optimization of protocol does not necessarily entail maximum violation fraction.

Unusual equilibration of a particle in a potential with a thermal wall

We consider a particle in a one-dimensional box of length $L$ with a Maxwell bath at one end and a reflecting wall at the other end. Using a renewal approach, as well as directly solving the master equation, we show that the system exhibits a slow power law relaxation with a logarithmic correction towards the final equilibrium state. We extend the renewal approach to a class of confining potentials of the form $U(x) \propto x^α$, $x>0$, where we find that the relaxation is $\sim t^{-(α+2)/(α-2)}$ for $α>2$, with a logarithmic correction when $(α+2)/(α-2)$ is an integer. For $α<2$ the relaxation is exponential. Interestingly for $α=2$ (harmonic potential) the localised bath can not equilibrate the particle.
