Non-Gaussianity from Preheating

We consider a two-field model for inflation where the second order metric perturbations can be amplified by a parametric resonance during preheating. We demonstrate that there can arise a considerable enhancement of non-Gaussianity sourced by the local terms generated through the coupled perturbations. We argue that the non-Gaussianity parameter could be as large as f_{NL} ~ 50. Our results may provide a useful test of preheating in future CMB experiments.

Coupled Inflation and Brane Gases

We study an effective four-dimensional theory with an action with two scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity, and with a matter action which couples to the two scalar fields via an overall field-dependent coefficient in the action. Such a theory could arise from a dimensional reduction of supergravity coupled to a gas of branes winding the compactified dimensions. We show the existence of solutions corresponding to power-law inflation. The graceful exit from inflation can be obtained by postulating the decay of the branes, as would occur if the branes are unstable in the vacuum and stabilized at high densities by plasma effects. This construction provides an avenue for connecting string gas cosmology and the late-time universe.

Gravitino production from reheating in split supersymmetry

We discuss gravitino production from reheating in models where the splitting between particle and sparticle masses can be larger than TeV, as naturally arising in the context of split supersymmetry. We show that such a production typically dominates over thermal contributions arising from the interactions of gauginos, squarks and sleptons. We constrain the supersymmetry breaking scale of the relevant sector for a given reheat temperature. However the situation changes when the gravitinos dominate the Universe and decay before nucleosynthesis. We briefly describe prospects for a successful baryogenesis and a viable neutralino dark matter in this case.

Sneutrino condensate as a candidate for the hot big bang cosmology

If inflationary paradigm is correct, then it must create conditions for the hot big bang model with all observed matter, baryons and the seed perturbations for the structure formation. In this paper we propose a scenario where the inflaton energy density is dumped into the bulk in a brane world setup, and all the required physical conditions are created by the right handed neutrino sector within supersymmetry. The scalar component of the right handed Majorana neutrino is responsible for generating the scale invariant fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation, reheating the Universe at a temperature~$T_{rh}\leq 10^{9}$ GeV, and finally generating the lepton/baryon asymmetry, $n_{B}/s\sim 10^{-10}$, with no lepton/baryon isocurvature fluctuations.

Interaction Rates in String Gas Cosmology

We study string interaction rates in the Brandenberger-Vafa scenario, the very early universe cosmology of a gas of strings. This cosmology starts with the assumption that all spatial dimensions are compact and initially have string scale radii; some dimensions grow due to some thermal or quantum fluctuation which acts as an initial expansion velocity. Based on simple arguments from the low energy equations of motion and string thermodynamics, we demonstrate that the interaction rates of strings are negligible, so the common assumption of thermal equilibrium cannot apply. We also present a new analysis of the cosmological evolution of strings on compact manifolds of large radius. Then we discuss modifications that should be considered to the usual Brandenberger-Vafa scenario. To confirm our simple arguments, we give a numerical calculation of the annihilation rate of winding strings. In calculating the rate, we also show that the quantum mechanics of strings in small spaces is important.

Can we have a stringy origin behind $Ω_Λ(t)\propto Ω_m(t)$?

Inspired by the current observations that the ratio of the abundance of dark energy $Ω_Λ$, and the matter density, $Ω_{m}$, is such that $Ω_{m}/Ω_Λ\sim 0.37$, we provide a string inspired phenomenological model where we explain this order one ratio, the smallness of the cosmological constant, and also the recent cosmic acceleration. We observe that any effective theory motivated by a higher dimensional physics provides radion/dilaton couplings to the standard model and the dark matter component with different strengths. Provided radion/dilaton is a dynamical field we show that $Ω_Λ(t)$ tracks $Ω_{m}(t)$ and dominates very recently.

Enhanced reheating via Bose condensates

In supersymmetric extensions of the particle physics Standard Model, gauge invariant combinations of squarks and sleptons (flat directions) can acquire large expectation values during a period of cosmological inflation. If the inflaton sector couples to matter fields via these flat directions, then new channels for efficient reheating, in particular via parametric resonance instabilities, are opened up. These can lead to efficient reheating induced by the flat directions even if the bare coupling constants are small. In this Letter we discuss various channels which yield this ``enhanced reheating'' effect, and we address some cosmological consequences.

Inflation in large N limit of supersymmetric gauge theories

Within supersymmetry we provide an example where the inflaton sector is derived from a gauge invariant polynomial of SU(N) or SO(N) gauge theory. Inflation in our model is driven by multi-flat directions, which assist accelerated expansion. We show that multi-flat directions can flatten the individual non-renormalizable potentials such that inflation can occur at sub-Planckian scales. We calculate the density perturbations and the spectral index, we find that the spectral index is closer to scale invariance for large N. In order to realize a successful cosmology we require large N of order, N~600.

Sneutrino condensate source for density perturbations, leptogenesis and low reheat temperature

We bring together some known ingredients beyond the Standard Model physics which can explain the hot Big Bang model with the observed baryon asymmetry and also the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation with a minimal set of assumptions. We propose an interesting scenario where the inflaton energy density is dumped into an infinitely large extra dimension. Instead of the inflaton it is the right handed sneutrino condensate, which is acquiring non-zero vacuum expectation value during inflation, whose fluctuations are responsible for the density perturbations seen in the cosmic microwave background radiation with a spectral index $n_s\approx 1$. The decay of the condensate is explaining the reheating of the Universe with a temperature, $T_{rh}\leq 10^{9}$ GeV, and the baryon asymmetry of order one part in $10^{10}$ with no baryon-isocurvature fluctuations.

Seed perturbations for primordial magnetic fields from MSSM flat directions

We demonstrate that the MSSM flat directions can naturally account for the seed magnetic fields in the early Universe. The non-zero vacuum expectation value of an MSSM flat direction condensate provides masses to the gauge fields and thereby breaks conformal invariance. During inflation the condensate receives spatial perturbations and $SU(2) x U(1)_Y$ gauge currents are generated together with (hyper)magnetic fields. When these long wavelength vector perturbations reenter our horizon they give rise to $U(1)_{em}$ magnetic fields with an amplitude of $10^{-30}$ Gauss, as required by the dynamo mechanism.

A model for fluctuating inflaton coupling: (s)neutrino induced adiabatic perturbations and non-thermal leptogenesis

We discuss an unique possibility of generating adiabatic density perturbations and leptogenesis from the spatial fluctuations of the inflaton decay rate. The key assumption is that the initial isocurvature perturbations are created in the right handed sneutrino sector during inflation which is then converted into adiabatic perturbations when the inflaton decays. We discuss distinct imprints on the cosmic micro wave background radiation, which can distinguish non-thermal versus thermal leptogenesis.

Note on the Robustness of the Neutrino Mass Bounds from Cosmology

The recent high precision maps of cosmic microwave anisotropies combined with measurements of the galaxy power spectrum from new large-scale redshift surveys have allowed stringent bounds on the sum of the neutrino masses to be placed. The past analyses, however, have implicitly assumed that the spectrum of primordial density fluctuations is adiabatic and coherent, as predicted in the simplest models of inflation. In this paper, we show that the limits hold even if the assumption on the primordial power spectrum is relaxed to allow for a contribution of nonadiabatic, incoherent fluctuations such as would be predicted by topological defects.

Dumping inflaton energy density out of this world

We argue that a brane world with a warped, infinite extra dimension allows for the inflaton to decay into the bulk so that after inflation, the effective dark energy disappears from our brane. This is achieved by the redshifting of the decay products into infinity of the 5th dimension. As a consequence, all matter and CMB density perturbations could have their origin in the decay of a MSSM flat direction rather than the inflaton. We also discuss a string theoretical model where reheating after inflation may not affect the observable brane.

Dynamical Relaxation of the Cosmological Constant and Matter Creation in the Universe

In this Letter we discuss the issues of the graceful exit from inflation and of matter creation in the context of a recent scenario \cite{RHBrev} in which the back-reaction of long wavelength cosmological perturbations induces a negative contribution to the cosmological constant and leads to a dynamical relaxation of the bare cosmological constant. The initially large cosmological constant gives rise to primordial inflation, during which cosmological perturbations are stretched beyond the Hubble radius. The cumulative effect of the long wavelength fluctuations back-reacts on the background geometry in a form which corresponds to the addition of a negative effective cosmological constant to the energy-momentum tensor. In the absence of an effective scalar field driving inflation, whose decay can reheat the Universe, the challenge is to find a mechanism which produces matter at the end of the relaxation process. In this Letter, we point out that the decay of a condensate representing the order parameter for a ``flat'' direction in the field theory moduli space can naturally provide a matter generation mechanism. The order parameter is displaced from its vacuum value by thermal or quantum fluctuations, it is frozen until the Hubble constant drops to a sufficiently low value, and then begins to oscillate about its ground state. During the period of oscillation it can decay into Standard Model particles similar to how the inflaton decays in scalar-field-driven models of inflation.

Inflation and Brane Gases

We investigate a new way of realizing a period of cosmological inflation in the context of brane gas cosmology. It is argued that a gas of co-dimension one branes, out of thermal equilibrium with the rest of the matter, has an equation of state which can - after stabilization of the dilaton - lead to power-law inflation of the bulk. The most promising implementation of this mechanism might be in Type IIB superstring theory, with inflation of the three large spatial dimensions triggered by ``stabilized embedded 2-branes''. Possible applications and problems with this proposal are discussed.

CMB constraints on non-thermal leptogenesis

Leptogenesis is at the heart of particle cosmology which requires physics beyond the Standard Model. There are two possibilities of realizing leptogenesis; thermal and non-thermal. Both are viable given the scale of inflation and the constraint on the reheat temperature. However non-thermal leptogenesis can leave its imprint upon cosmic micro wave background radiation. In this paper we will discuss cosmological constraints on non-thermal leptogenesis scenarios within supersymmetry.

MSSM Higgses as the source of reheating and all matter

We consider the possibility that the dark energy responsible for inflation is deposited into extra dimensions outside of our observable universe. Reheating and all matter can then be obtained from the MSSM flat direction condensate involving the Higgses $H_u$ and $H_d$, which acquires large amplitude by virtue of quantum fluctuations during inflation. The reheat temperature is $T_{RH} \lesssim 10^9$ GeV so that there is no gravitino problem. We find a spectral index $n_s\approx 1$ with a very weak dependence on the Higgs potential.
