Q-ball formation in the wake of Hubble-induced radiative corrections

We discuss some interesting aspects of the $\rm Q$-ball formation during the early oscillations of the flat directions. These oscillations are triggered by the running of soft $({\rm mass})^2$ stemming from the nonzero energy density of the Universe. However, this is quite different from the standard $\rm Q$-ball formation. The running in presence of gauge and Yukawa couplings becomes strong if $m_{1/2}/m_0$ is sufficiently large. Moreover, the $\rm Q$-balls which are formed during the early oscillations constantly evolve, due to the redshift of the Hubble-induced soft mass, until the low-energy supersymmtery breaking becomes dominant. For smaller $m_{1/2}/m_0$, $\rm Q$-balls are not formed during early oscillations because of the shrinking of the instability band due to the Hubble expansion. In this case the $\rm Q$-balls are formed only at the weak scale, but typically carry smaller charges, as a result of their amplitude redshift. Therefore, the Hubble-induced corrections to the flat directions give rise to a successful $\rm Q$-ball cosmology.

Reheating as a surface effect

We describe a new mechanism for reheating the Universe through evaporation of a surface charge of a fragmented inflaton condensate. We show that for a range of Yukawa coupling of the inflaton to the matter sector evaporation gives rise to a much smaller reheat temperature compared to the standard perturbative decay. As a consequence, reheating through a surface effect could solve the gravitino and moduli over production problem in inflationary models without fine tuning the Yukawa sector.

Dynamics of a large extra dimension inspired hybrid inflation model

In low scale quantum gravity scenarios the fundamental scale of nature can be as low as TeV, in order to address the naturalness of the electroweak scale. A number of difficulties arise in constructing specific models; stabilisation of the radius of the extra dimensions, avoidance of overproduction of Kaluza Klein modes, achieving successful baryogenesis and production of a close to scale-invariant spectrum of density perturbations with the correct amplitude. We examine in detail the dynamics, including radion stabilisation, of a hybrid inflation model that has been proposed in order to address these difficulties, where the inflaton is a gauge singlet residing in the bulk. We find that for a low fundamental scale the phase transition, which in standard four dimensional hybrid models usually ends inflation, is slow and there is second phase of inflation lasting for a large number of e-foldings. The density perturbations on cosmologically interesting scales exit the Hubble radius during this second phase of inflation, and we find that their amplitude is far smaller than is required. We find that the duration of the second phase of inflation can be short, so that cosmologically interesting scales exit the Hubble radius prior to the phase transition, and the density perturbations have the correct amplitude, only if the fundamental scale takes an intermediate value. Finally we comment briefly on the implications of an intermediate fundamental scale for the production of primordial black holes and baryogenesis.

Dynamics of coupled bosonic systems with applications to preheating

Coupled, multi-field models of inflation can provide several attractive features unavailable in the case of a single inflaton field. These models have a rich dynamical structure resulting from the interaction of the fields and their associated fluctuations. We present a formalism to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of coupled scalar fields. This formalism solves the problem of renormalizing interacting models in a transparent way using dimensional regularization. The evolution is generated by a renormalized effective Lagrangian which incorporates the dynamics of the mean fields and their associated fluctuations at one-loop order. We apply our method to two problems of physical interest: (i) a simple two-field model which exemplifies applications to reheating in inflation, and (ii) a supersymmetric hybrid inflation model. This second case is interesting because inflation terminates via a smooth phase transition which gives rise to a spinodal instability in one of the fields. We study the evolution of the zero mode of the fields and the energy density transfer to the fluctuations from the mean fields. We conclude that back reaction effects can be significant over a wide parameter range. In particular for the supersymmetric hybrid model we find that particle production can be suppressed due to these effects.

Baryogenesis in models with large extra dimensions

We describe how difficult it is to realise baryogenesis in models where the fundamental scale in nature is as low as TeV. The problem becomes even more challenging if we assume that there are only {\it two} extra compact spatial dimensions, because thermal history of such a Universe is strongly constrained by various cosmological and astrophysical bounds which translate the maximal temperature of the Universe which must not exceed $\sim {\cal O}(10)$MeV. This simply reiterates that the observed baryon asymmetry must be synthesised just above the nucleosynthesis scale. In this talk we address how to construct a simple model which can overcome this challenge.

Possible astrophysical signatures of heavy stable neutral relics in supergravity models

We consider heavy stable neutral particles in the context of supergravity and show that a gravitationally suppressed inflaton decay can produce such particles in cosmologically interesting abundances within a wide mass range $10^3 {\rm GeV} \leq m_X \leq 10^{11} {\rm GeV}$. In gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking models, a heavy particle can decay into its superpartner and a photon-photino pair or a gravitino. Such decays only change the identity of a possible dark matter candidate. However, for $10^3 {\rm GeV} \leq m_X \leq 10^7 {\rm GeV}$, astrophysical bounds from gamma-ray background and photodissociation of light elements can be more stringent than the overclosure bound, thus ruling out the particle as a dark matter candidate.

Hubble-induced radiative corrections and Affleck-Dine Baryogenesis

We examine the viability of the Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis under radiatively induced running of soft breaking $({\rm mass})^2$ of the flat directions stemming from non-zero energy density of the inflaton during inflation. A major difference from analogous phenomenological studies is that the horizon radius provides a natural infrared cut-off to the quantum corrections in this case. We identify different scenarios which may arise and point out that the $H_{u}L$ flat direction remains the most promising flat direction, since it is largely independent of uncertainties about high scale physics and details of the inflationary model.

Baryogenesis in theories with large extra spatial dimensions

We describe a simple and predictive scenario for baryogenesis in theories with large extra dimensions which resembles Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. The Affleck-Dine field is a complex scalar field carrying a $U(1)_χ$ charge which is dynamically broken after the end of inflation. This generates an excess of $χ$ over $\bar χ$, which then decays into Standard Model fermions to produce an excess of baryons over anti-baryons. Our model is very constrained because the Affleck-Dine field has to be sufficiently flat during inflation. It is also a source for density fluctuations which can be tested in the coming satellite and balloon experiments.

Assisted inflation via tachyon condensation

In this paper we propose a new mechanism of inflating the Universe with non-BPS $D4$ branes which decay into stable $D3$ branes via tachyon condensation. In a single brane scenario the tachyon potential is very steep and unable to support inflation. However if the universe lives in a stack of branes produced by a set of non-interacting unstable $\tilde {D4}$ branes, then the associated set of tachyons may drive inflation along our 3 spatial dimensions. After tachyon condensation the Universe is imagined to be filled with a set of parallel stable $D3$ branes. We study the scalar density perturbations and reheating within this setup.

Affleck-Dine leptogenesis via right-handed sneutrino fields in a supersymmetric hybrid inflation model

The onset of inflation in hybrid models require fine tuning in the initial conditions. The inflaton field should have an initial value close to the Planck scale $M_{P}$, whereas the auxiliary "orthogonal" field must be close to zero with an extreme accuracy. This problem can be alleviated if the orthogonal field fastly decays into some states not coupled to the inflaton. Natural candidates for such states can be the right-handed neutrinos. We show that a non-trivial evolution of the classic sneutrino fields after inflation offers an interesting mechanism for generating a correct amount of lepton asymmetry, which being reprocessed by sphalerons can explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Our scenario implies interesting bounds for the neutrino masses in the context of seesaw mechanism.

Final reheating temperature on a single brane

We make a generic remark on thermal history of a single brane cosmology in models with an infinitely large single extra dimension. We point out that the reheat temperature of the Universe is bounded by an excess production of gravitons from the thermal bath. The actual bound is given by the brane tension. If the initial temperature of the Universe is larger than this bound, then an efficient graviton production shall prevail. However, the brane cools down gradually as the Kaluza-Klein gravitons take the energy in excess away from the brane. The cooling continues until the radiation dominated phase is restored, which occurs before the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We argue whatsoever be the early evolution of the Universe, the final radiation dominated phase always starts after the Universe transits from non-conventional era to the standard cosmological era.

Noncommutativity in Space and Primordial Magnetic Field

In this paper we show that noncommutativity in spatial coordinates can generate magnetic field in the early Universe on a horizon scale. The strength of such a magnetic field depends on the number density of massive charged particles present at a given moment. This allows us to trace back the temperature dependence of the noncommutativity scale from the bounds on primordial magnetic field coming from nucleosynthesis.

A dynamical stabilization of the radion potential

Large extra dimensional theories attempt to solve the hierarchy problem by assuming that the fundamental scale of the theory is at the electroweak scale. This requires the size of the extra dimensions to be stabilized at a scale which is determined by the effective four dimensional Planck mass and the number of extra dimensions. In this paper we concentrate upon the dynamical reasons to stabilize them by providing a running mass to the radion field. We show that it is possible to maintain the size of the extra dimensions once it is stabilized throughout the dynamics of inflation.

Affleck-Dine baryogensis in large extra dimensions

Baryogenesis in the models where the fundamental scale is as low as TeV in the context of large extra dimensions is a challenging problem. The requirement for the departure from thermal equilibrium necessarily ties any low scale baryogenesis with that of a successful inflationary model which automatically provides the out of equilibrium condition after the end of inflation. However, it is also noticeable that in these models the reheat temperature of the Universe is strongly constrained from the overproduction of Kaluza-Klein modes, which enforces a very low reheat temperature. In this paper we describe a possible scenario for baryogenesis which has a similar characteristics of an Affleck-Dine field. We notice that in order to have an adequate baryon to entropy ratio one requires to promote this Affleck-Dine field to reside in the bulk.

Is nonperturbative inflatino production during preheating a real threat to cosmology?

We discuss toy models where supersymmetry is broken due to non-vanishing time-varying vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field during preheating. We discuss the production of inflatino the superpartner of inflaton due to vacuum fluctuations and then we argue that they do not survive until nucleosynthesis and decay along with the inflaton to produce a thermal bath after preheating. Thus the only relevant remnant is the helicity \pm 3/2 gravitinos which can genuinely cause problem to nucleosynthesis.

Interesting consequences of brane cosmology

We discuss cosmology in four dimensions within a context of brane-world scenario.Such models can predict chaotic inflation with very low reheat temperature depending on the brane tension. We notice that the gravitino abundance is different in the brane-world cosmology and by tuning the brane tension it is possible to get extremely low abundance. We also study Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in our toy model.

Post-inflationary brane cosmology

The brane cosmology has invoked new challenges to the usual Big Bang cosmology. In this paper we present a brief account on thermal history of the post-inflationary brane cosmology. We have realized that it is not obvious that the post-inflationary brane cosmology would always deviate from the standard Big Bang cosmology. However, if it deviates some stringent conditions on the brane tension are to be satisfied. In this regard we study various implications on gravitino production and its abundance. We discuss Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis and make some comments on moduli and dilaton problems in this context.
